The "pulling effect" that the camera does is because the viewfinder is on the left side. The closer you are to the subject, the more what you see and what is captured is different (shooting subjects far away, the distance between lens and viewfinder is minimal compared to how far is the subject). A trick that helps to frame close subjects is to tilt a little bit the camera on the left after framing it. I know it may sound a little bit unintuitive at first but this is the sort of flaws that makes you "feel" these cameras. You have no preview, exposing is tricky, framing is tricky, high contrasts and low light are not your friends. BUT, when you see your shots getting better over time, and those amazing colours coming out of nowhere... it's simply great! A little drop of analogic pleasure in a digital sea is always welcome :) This said I love your videos, I bought recently a Fuji X100F and I couldn't be happier about it. Thanks for the content, keep it up!
If we all could just harness 10% the joy that Joe has seeing trains...then the world would be an incredibly happy place to be. Thanks for the inspiration and another great Japan vlog!
This blog came just in time for me; I just recently began getting into instax film. I am so deeply in love with the images it produces. The blown out foregrounds and deepened backgrounds and the slightly grainy, pastelled, yet still vibrant colors, are driving me crazy. I even ordered new photo software that supposedly include some of the best film simulation prepacks available today. I'm really excited to see how my XT20 photos turn out when I apply vintage Fuji Film simulations, and even Kodachrome and other sims. Thanks for this man. I'll probably wind up watching this a few times this week just because it makes me smile so much haha. Always love your clips man.
This really brings me back to my childhood, I remember my dad having the polaroid instant camera and we had to be so careful what shots we took because the film was so expensive :)
Haha so true! Elly handed me her Instax recently with one photo left (she'd saved it all day) to get a shot at a viewpoint. As she handed it over, I accidentally grabbed it by the shutter and took a photo of the ground haha!
Cheers dude, thanks for noticing! I processed this with some tweaks and changes that I’ve not previously tried in a vlog, so I’m glad it hasn’t gone unnoticed. I’ll be rounding up my learnings on audio in a video sometime this summer ✌️
Hello Joe and Elly, well after a hard days work, I get home coffee chocolate muffin sit down and watch you guys. So much fun and what a fantastic place, I really enjoyed this so much, the camera looks like fun, and some of those shots have a metro look, this was just full of fun and as always tow see you both smiling, and those train, yep they are cool. Elly may have something in her bag that's reacting to those photos lol lol, thanks for making my day as always, love your work so much be safe both of you, you rock!!!
Thanks Clive! We had tremendous fun on this particular day and I'm really pleased with how the vlog came out! That's a fair point about Elly having something in her bag. Something magnetic could possibly be screwing things up a bit? But to be honest, it's most likely older film than we thought! Hope you enjoyed the coffee and muffin 😋
With the X-Raying of Film you’ll find the effect is qualitative. i.e. the scanners are film safe for a couple scans but the more they are scanned the more damage it does.
@@joeallam I realized how hard it is when tried to vlog for myself, and 5 videos later I still hate my own voice and can't find a courage to include it in my vids... maybe next time. You are a inspiration and I appreciate your work! Take care Joe 😊
Great idea ! Inspiring. I just recently thought about the idea of using a bit of Instax, for the fun. Probably a mix of standard and monochrom. Nice video Joe.
I actually have one at home and completely forgot to bring it to Japan! In fact, I thought I _did_ have it with me, until I started this particular day haha
Hi. I have used the x100f with optical view finder hooked up to an instax printer. Rule is you have to print what you shoot at the time. Nice though as you can switch between black and white and colour on the same cartridge.
Nice! You could also couple it with a 256mb card or something small enough for only a handful of shots. I used to do this out of necessity when I was a student and still rocking a 1gb card with my 50D for far too long! I’m intrigued by those instax printers. I’ve always wondered what the colour quality is like given that it’s a digital device not photographic paper being exposed
Joe Allam the colour quality if you like Fujifilm colours is excellent on the printers. I have the first released model and its great. I ve been using a voigtlander 40mm manual lens on an X-T2 its a single coated lens and produces pretty much what you see on the lcd on camera. For me Its just nice to get some instant results its not about trying to replicate an instax or film experience.
I used to have a 90 neo classic (mini polaroid) but got bored of the tiny size and so I sold it. I wanted a wide, was in doubt between the 210 or the 300 but found a 210 for €15 and so went with that one. Theres no video on yt comparing the 210 and 300, by taking the same shot on each camera to compare the photos so maybe that’s an idea for you to do? :)
Joe, you continue to be one of my favorite subscriptions on RUclips. Thanks for all the unique content! You're very articulate and do a great job in front of the video camera. Cheers!
gudetama is my spirit animal, lol back of instax! The view finder issue is a parallax effect due to the view not coming from the lens, so closer things will have a larger effect seen. The train crossings in Japan definitely hold a fascination, but maybe I read too much Japanese manga.
Haha, it’s a fantastic character! That’s true about the parallax, although I think my viewfinder is facing ever further off-centre than just it’s positioning haha. Can’t expect too much from a camera that cost about £40!
Totally is ! I’m planing a trip to Japan maybe for the end of the year. I’m a portrait photographer but would love to shoot some street style while I’m there too .
The Instax wide is not a new format, fuji has been making it for over 20 years (1998). The mini was a derivative of the original (wide) format. Then they came out with the square format as a rival to the Polaroid format. Instax instant film is completely stable and no need to take any special care, for instance, no need to shield from light or special storage. Original Polaroid film, 2008 and prior was the same, very stable, not sensitive to light and no need for special storage. Refrigerating would just help it last longer than the expiration date. Only new Polaroid films that are not the original recipe, are a bit hit and miss but it’s all we can get now, so we have to just deal with it until they finally perfect it, which I imagine will take some time. Going to the “pulling to the right” effect is because of the off set view finer, the closer you get, the more obvious the parallax effect. This is how SLR cameras get perfect framing, as you are looking directly through the lens.
thank you for taking us along again for another vlog. You are so talented man and I love your work. the photos are pretty great and I also like Elly's prints too. you guys are awesome.
Instant and film in general, remove the ability to repose and take 500 photos of 1 thing. I always try to snap my friends before they realise what I'm up to.
The instax Wide was the original Fuji Instax format. Fuji Instax and original Polaroid film are completely stable and letting it develop in light is not a problem at all. Both films are touchy with temperature during development which is why every instant photo comes out slightly different. The only instant film that is touchy with light exposure during development is Impossible Project made film to be compatible with Polaroid cameras. Shaking it like a Polaroid picture was something that was popularised by The song “Shake It” by Outcast. It was never recommended by the company however the songs lyrics was referring to Polaroid pack film (peel apart) where the photo was peeled off the negative once developed, which was still slightly wet and waving it in the air dried it quicker. This practice wasn’t supposed to be used with integral film but of course many people did.
Thanks! Not sure if I'll run the same ones again, but I'd like to have other merch options in the future. Sorry if you missed out; they were running for a total of 5 weeks in the end. I post updates most frequently to my Instagram and Twitter, so probably best to keep connected there. ✌️

Loved the whole blog Joe and Ellie, specially pleased to see the colours the fuji puts out. I've a question: how long do your instax prints last without problems? And do you take any special precautions to preserve them?
Those colors of the Wide are awesome. I love my Instax mini 90. Your shots with the mini are not what mine look like. These washed out colors are not the usual thing. Mine takes them like the Wide. Maybe change the film pack with a new one.

There is something about instant film that is satisfying. Something you don’t have to fuss about in some editing program or go get printed at a shop.
Absolutely! The instant memories you get from them, even if they're fresh images, have such a depth to them, in the same way a distant memory would.
