It's pretty obvious by now, just how much I love trains in Japan. This vlog is dedicated purely to finding some hidden photography spots around Tokyo, specific to overpasses and railway crossings.
In this vlog, we visit one of my favourite areas of Tokyo and some of the busiest train stations in the world; Ikebukuro, followed by Yoyogi and Shinjuku for some level crossing shots of the trains. I was shooting photos exclusively with the Fujifilm X-H1, mostly paired with the Fujifilm 35mmF2 lens.
I thoroughly enjoyed making this vlog and am so happy with the results. From what started as an idea to explore an area I often saw from the window of my commute, I'm so glad I went to investigate further. You see, you don't have to have a Japan Rail Pass to enjoy the amazing trains in Japan!

I love trains too. I can watch them all day.
Ahhh you always manage to give me that itch to visit Japan again😍 Btw. fellow train-fan here✋ I would have loved to join you on that train photography session🙌
I just watched it again 18months later!! Photographing trains is quite normal Joe....especially in Japan. Another great video thanks.
great video joe! i love all spots in japan is vlog or photo worthy haha :)
So many nice pictures! Love the Tokyo vibes
Great video as always and the last few scenes of slow-mo are simply stunning! Looking forward to your next Japan Vlog!!
Taking photos of trains is something very japanese. Great shots!
Another legendary vid Joe!!!!!! This one's amazing 🔥🔥🔥🚈🚉🚊🚝🚝🚄
Fantastic video Joe. Great shots! You look like you're having a really great time over there.
Amazing video Joe. Never knew photographying trains in Tokyo would be so much fun. You portrayed that really well. My son loves trains and we're planning a trip to Tokyo next year. This video is a great asset in planning our journey. I also just finished watching your Japan Rail series ep.1 and the quality and story of it is unbelievable! You and Elly are doing incredible job. I'm looking forward to your next episode.
Outstanding video and photographs! Thanks for sharing the experience and keep up the good work.
I miss Japan so much. Happy for you to be there for such an extended time.
You guys are the best man! Thoroughly enjoy your content.
Fantastic video, love the quality you put into it and nah it's not weird that it's a video about trains.
Visiting Tokyo next month! Can’t wait to explore and visit these spots. Thank you!
Sweet vid Joe. Love the trains in Japan! You got some rad footage & love the audio you captured too. Might need to head back to Tokyo to shoot a train / portrait series.
I love this one! Beautiful shots!
Great episode guys. I really love the aesthetic of the Japanese rail system and particularly the visual presence it has on the Tokyo cityscape. Everything intertwined.
Joe, i might have not commented in ages but this is the best video in a while. Love the vibes, photography, song choice. Everything was just perfect. Keep it up and im looking forward to the next one. :)
That was brilliant Joe. This is what photography is all about, grinning from ear to ear doing what you love.
I'm making a day of this now myself when we hit Tokyo in 3 weeks time.
This is such an awesome inspiration. Thank you! Really excited to watch more of your videos and photos!
Perfect timing! Will check out this place next week in Tokyo. Really appreciate your work! 💕
No worries! Hope you have as much fun as I did!
Such great refreshing and unique photo content. Trust your gut and take photos of what you love and we’ll be here to watch!
was just in Japan for 3 weeks, came home just on 8 Feb..... this is extending my withdrawals... fuck best country ive properly fell in love with along with its people. Japan truly is special.
Fantastic editing and sound too. Awesome
I feel you, can't get enough them. Great shots.
Welcome back. Haven’t seen you vlogging in quite a while. Great work.
this video is like really really inspiring, especially the outro, last clip blew me all the way to ikebukuro.... glad i found this channel
Love ur video Joe. 🙏🏼
Great Video, it give me lot of inspiration, I can't wait to go toTokyo next time
gawd i love these vlogs so much! never seen such an interesting take on train photography! very cool!
I love photographing trains as well, haha. Love this video.
4:52 is such a vibe!
Due to the sort of lockdown we stay at home and watching all 4 episodes of Japan. Well made and well done. Thanks 🙏🏻
I always really love the vibe in your vids!
I have loved trains ever since I was small. I could stay for hours in my city just looking at the trains going by when I was 3-4 years old and even recognized what train would come out of the tunnel just by the sound of it. When I was in Tokyo in June, i ditched my friend at the hotel and went to Tokyo station and spent hours on the Shinkansen platforms photographing and videoing the trains. I even took a Shinkansen to Ueno station and back just to try the different ones!
Loved this video and the Japan train series as Japan truly are the worlds best train country. Would love to shoot some trains in Japan with you some day! :)
Cheers from Sweden
Amazing Amazing shots Joe. Always love your Japan contents. Really love your colours.
This episode is so cool, awesome cyberpunk vibes in those train photos. Always loved your Japan videos btw.
I certainly need to head over here to get some shots. Great video!
Great video and beautiful shots. As somebody who just bought their first Fuji (an X-T3 with 23mm and 35mm F2 lenses) and is going to Japan for the first time in a few weeks this video got me excited! Thanks for sharing. Subscribed.
Awesome shots! Loved the trains over there esp the Yamanote line, reliving my week in Tokyo, thanks!
Great video and love the music! Instantly in love with Tokyo! Thanks man!
That looks amazing, gotta plan another trip to Japan!
Wow those level crossings were so beautiful! Can't wait to visit Tokyo in September :D
They’re quite special aren’t they?! September is a great month to visit Japan. Perfect comfortable temperatures all round 👌🏻
Your in for a real treat, when you go to Tokyo, have an amazing time!!
Great video!
It's amazing how photographers like you manage to make any ordinary street looks amazing in your photos !
Great video, it's about time you made a video focused on trains! And agreed, 'Ike Bikie' as it's affectionately known is a great area 😁
Haha, true! The rail series we filmed is pretty heavily focused on trains too!
Love tokyo, that see fantastic images. Thank! Joe.
I am so happy I discovered your channel! It seems a lot of youtubers are focusing on filming and less on photography. You kinda keep it balanced and I love it
Thank you! I guess it stems from me not being able to ever decide which element I am more passionate about!
Every Japan / Tokyo video you guys drop make me wanna go back! (We went for our honeymoon in 2017) We fell in love with the country, food, people, city, culture,... (and I with the X-T2 🤭 ). So, keep m coming
I love trains and photography. They go great together.
Dude I really like the nice instrumental music. I feel like it fits the video perfectly.
Thanks! It always takes a long time to find the right music, but I feel it’s always worth it.
Envious of you being in Ikebukuro, as it is my 'home' while visiting Japan! Looking forward to returning!
Nice hearing the sounds of Tokyo -- keep the videos coming!
The transitions at the end one by one. truly something great!
Cheers! We had a lot of fun with the slo-mo at the end. I had actually filmed an outro about 30 minutes earlier before testing out a new film style which got me all excited haha
Pure class wonderful video 🚞 📸
As always, stunning shots man! When's your railroad series coming out, looking forward to it!
Wonderful color, amazing trains! I felt very well when I watched this video.
Awesome videos. You always choose the right music 🎶 makes me feel like I'm back in Tokyo.
Japan vlogs are the best 👌
Wow tokyo and trains !! Awesome
A perfect match!
love it Joe... im a secret train lover... & you are right, what better place than Tokyo to take pictures of them... I must take a trip to tokyo..its been nearly 20 years since ive been there..far to long
You’re definitely my go-to for the best Japan photography videos on here. Those train shots were unreal and the slow-mo at the end?? Whuuuttt???😎😎
Thank you! I’ve built up quite a collection of Japan videos now, but I think that’s just a sign of how photogenic it is there!
Nice vlog, Joe! Done that walk from Shibuya to Shinjuku a couple of times...yep, those lightweight level crossings and the proximity of the trains can be mesmerising.
It’s not that long of a walk, but the crossings mixed with fascination really mean you’ll have to allocate double the time haha
I'm a train fan as well, some of my best shots were taken at the train tracks
I love trains as well. My dad has a huge n scale train set that I get to play with once in a while lol
Beautiful shots! I’m going to Tokyo in a few weeks (with my fujifilm xt2 and old canon film SLR) I cant wait to check these spots out
Amazing! I hope you have as much fun as I did!
Take a photos/videos of trains in Tokyo is the best thing to do. I always do it!
Great photos, I like Tokyo.
Hi Joe, great video looking forward to your Japan rail series. Great how you found the level crossings, train fan I think 🙂, cheers from Andrew in Canada
Love this train episode! Nice still images. 👍🏽📸
Many thanks! Did you have a favourite image?
Awesome video Joe! I actually have been a fan of your channel for quite a while. I used to live in Tokyo and the trains were a big obsession of mine. I really look forward to your train focused one as I've been making a doc on Japan's current rolling stock. Great work!
Ah great stuff! I’d love to see a documentary about it. What’s the greater concept/story behind it?
@@joeallam It's pretty anorak-ish, I'm embarrassed to say. It's about each type of train on the bigger lines, followed by one place it connects to. I should get it done soon, otherwise the material will be out of date. Haha. In any case, I'm loving your travel and photography videos from all over the world! I'm in Vancouver, BC, Canada and haven't had a chance to travel for a while so your videos are really helping my mood! Keep up the great work, man.
Love the X-H1
Fantastic video report........
Nice video Joe! I think of Japan as a photographer's mecca... you just want to take photos of 'everything'
Japan is nice place for urban photography 👏🏼
Another really nice video Joe. I have one question. When you're walking and talking the shot is very smooth, but the autofocus is hunting around all the time i'm also assuming it's the GH5S. Is it?
I sort of hope it is so it's so easy to identify the 5S from the 5, but hope it's the 5 to give some hope to the 5S.
Love all your work and quickly became a fan. I’m trying to take photography more serious as a hobby and purchase my first “real camera” but still undecided on whether to buy a X100F or X-H1 or a newer Fuji camera releasing this year. I really love both the X100F and X-H1 from your videos
Always by Utah: this song made this video magical!
Great video Joe. Was only last week that I was also doing night shots at the infamous Yoyogi crossing! Next time your back in Tokyo, you have to check out the bridge at Uguisudani Station, and also Shimogoinden Bridge outside Nippori Station. Insane amounts of train activity there.
this made me miss Tokyo even more. thank you for this great vid! i have no idea why i just found out about your channel-i literally thought the intro was an intro from some movies hehe
Fuji colours are just beautiful, think i need to get myself one and that 35mm!
I’ve been lusting after the 35mm for as long as Elly’s owned it. I actually bought myself one after this day haha
great work 😎 I also want to experience the streets in Japan soon..!
That picture of a taxi at minute 9:05 it is amazing! I love the colours, the composition and lights over the road. Congrats for the video. I'm actually looking forward to buy a fuji xt3 because of your videos 😂
Thanks! I was actually waiting for a taxi to come through for ages and then when one did I ran over to catch that shot before it left!
Very good video as always. Thank you for the video explaining your vlog gear as well. I just have a question. You shoot everything (VLOGs) on the GH5, right? What do you think on AF-performance. I know everybody asks this probably. I see some hunting here and then. Do you have a lot of troubles with that which makes you later throwing some of your shots in the trash?
The other question would be: Do you think the GH5s is good for vlogging as well even though there's no IBIS? Is it still useable for kind of "steady-shots" with a stabilized lens? The low-light performance is much better.
Sorry for asking so much ,-)
Hello, really nice vlog about Japan . Just wanna ask if you use CPL filter during steet snaps or not ? Thanks
You should go to Enoshima and shoot the trains there! The Enoden is smaller than the ones in central Tokyo but it goes through the middle of the street in one section and next to the ocean in another.
Nice video!
There’s something about the natural lighting in Tokyo or Japan that’s very comforting to the eyes. Any reason why?
Damn Joe! I was thinking about taking a full day, maybe two just for street photography and then.... "Hidden Japan Rail PHOTOGRAPHY SPOTS in TOKYO" pops up!
Im going to Japan all month of March, definitely going to check those spots out! hihih I love those unrated places and neighborhoods.
Keep it up!
Haha, thanks! Carry a camera with you everyday, you’ll want more than just a couple of days shooting! Honestly, everyday life in Japan is so photogenic; some of my best shots have been from just walking around for other occasions.
An excellent and informative Vlog Joe! I really liked the area around Akihabara station for train and subway shots :)
Ah yes! The tracks/bridges that lead towards Kanda are great! I featured them in a vlog last year too
@@joeallam I already know what I'll watch next 😅
Hey Joe, I stayed in Ikebukuro a couple of years ago on business. Tokyo is an amazing place!
Did you use a specific preset on the pics? Love the look of the photos! Going to Japan in late April :D
Love trains, more more more :-)
Amazing place and shoot! The opposite of the philosophy of a Japanese garden.
Japan was my best photo trip of my life, amazing video Joe!
It continues to be the most inspiring destination for me!
@@joeallam absolutely agree with you!
Switzerland and japan are beautiful
Dear Joe, could you specify which part/from what side of the Ikebukuro station are the level crossings? Somehow I did a long walk from Shinjuku, through the Toyama Park and the around Takadanobaba (hehe) station, but all of the crossings were uneven. Will be grateful for a hint! Keep up the splendid work!
Have you been on Toden's Arakawa streetcar line? You'd enjoy it- lots of interesting shitamachi neighborhoods to check out and photograph in. Keisei's main line is good, too for exploring the eastern parts of Tokyo...Yahiro, Aoto, Machiya, etc. Great fun! Keep up the marvelous work!
Thanks for the tips! I hadn’t seen that streetcar before, but just googled and what a cute little system that is!
The Minami & Kita Senju areas are also good if you like trains/neighborhoods. Also! If you take the Keisei Line, you can visit areas like Yahiro, Machiya, Aoto and points East...lots of interesting non-touristy Shitamachi to get pleasantly lost in. Aoto Station is a must...it has a great statue of Strauss, complete with canned waltz music. The area around Nakano Station is also a good time, with loads of fine photo ops. Have fun!
I'd love to see your take on the Enoshima Enoden line!
Atocha Station in Madrid is amazing too - double-decker trains.
Another great Japan vlog! Why do I get the feeling you’ll move to Japan at some point?
To be honest, it’s a thought I’ve toyed with a lot over the last 4 years, but I’m always concerned of falling “out of love” with it. I’m very happy to do frequent lengthy stays though haha!
