Episode 3: • KYOTO Photography & On...
Episode 4: • Landscape Photography ...
The first episode from my multi-part Japan Rail Series - a visual journey showcasing a variety of destinations during a 21-day rail itinerary across Japan. With an emphasis on capturing photography and video of aesthetic locations during the winter time, this journey aims to inspire people to visit the beautiful urban and rural destinations of Japan!
This first episode covers our journey from Sapporo in Hokkaido, through Hakodate and onto Ginzan Onsen. We visited viewpoints at the Mt. Moiwa ropeway and Sapporo TV Tower followed by dinner and drinks at the Sapporo Bier Garten. Onwards to Hakodate via a 3-hour train journey, we then travelled another ropeway up Mt. Hakodate. The following day's 7-hour train journey, lead us towards Ginzan Onsen, a quaint traditional village famous for its onsen ryokans and scenic snowy landscape during winter.
This whole trip and itinerary was planned and paid for independent of any tourism boards or businesses. The locations and accommodations are our genuine preferences and recommendations, as standard across the content on this channel. I love the train ride from Tokyo to Hakodate and then to Sapporo, I found it strangely scenic , I've never done it during winter but it looks incredible, can't wait to go back.
Joe you are such a talent guy. If I was a manage on travel channel on tv. I would recommend this serie. Watching you content makes me explore much through your channel. Sometime I feel like am the one holding the camera. You bring everything live. Keep up, can"t wait to watch more of Japan rail series.
Thank you! That’s a really interesting perspective and glad I could “bring you along” for the journey! Glad it’s got that _real_ factor to it!
your videos are like watching a movie 💯 so much talent 👌🏼
I take a lot of inspiration from movies, so this really means a lot; thank you!
That's very true
Amazing vlog! Loved the tones and edit
I've watched 43 seconds and I just had to pause and comment. Top notch intro. Sets the mood imediately for some quality content.
Update: I've watched the whole thing twice now. The thing that elevates your videos, apart from the very well composed shots in between the talking parts, is the sound design imo. You can tell you've spent a lot of time and effort into bringing the ambiance of the environment onto the video through sound. Keep going guys, honestly great stuff.
Great point about the sound. Loved the mood at 15:30 when it cuts to the morning
Was well worth the wait can't wait to see the rest keep up the great work
Just beautiful.
I love all your Japan videos! Excited for this series!
Oh my gosh...SO excited about this new series! Love, love, love!!!
Really enjoyed watching this. Keep up the great work!
Loving the videos and the Visuals! waiting for the next.
Thank you for this great video, looking forward for more of those from Japan. You're doing a great job ! Keep it up.
Love those long vlog formats! amazing shots, hokkaido is beautiful.
Cheers! This video was cut down from about 3-4 hours of original footage in total from the 5 days. Probably my longest edit to date!
Great job Joe, can't wait for the next one ! Really inspiring, Japan has to go on the travel list !
Many thanks! I’ve made a light start on the next one already, but have other videos planned in between as well, so can’t say for sure when the next one will be up. Japan is still my favourite destination; it just ticks all the boxes for me!

Great video Joe. Your shots got quality works.
Great vid. How you see and experience Japan makes me happy. That excitement when you see the trains! Wherever I travel, I want to treat different cultures in the way you do. Your positive is amazing, something we all should learn. Thank you!
Thank you, that's such a kind perspective you have on our work!
Awesome work - thank you
Looks like an amazing adventure Joe, looking forward to the next videos in this series!
I just watched all 4 episodes..GREAT GREAT GREAT work!! I really enjoyed them and i am looking forward to similar projects!! Keep up the amazing work!!
Really love n enjoy your video mate
Nice colours and great video, as usual Joe👍
Thoroughly enjoyable journey, thanks for inviting us along. You both look so happy with your travels - it's quite infectious! I really want to experience a bullet train now and doubt if HS2 will ever compare.
Thanks! I don't think HS2 will ever be as successful as it has potential to be unfortunately. I find these types of projects at the population and development we're at now, require insane amounts of persuasion to get through the political hoops and public approval. It's a shame really, but I do see both sides, although I am definitely more in favour of its development and long-term benefits!
Most enjoyable!
Bloody brilliant mate! So good. Cheers Matt
Really nice work! You set a huge new level of travel video blog!!!
Train nerds unite! Great stuff. Kudos to you and Elly for a beautifully filmed and edited video. Really enjoyed it.
Joe, your work is beautiful. Thanks for sharing it.

Great video, Joe! I really enjoyed it. I’m travelling in Japan at the moment with my wife so your video was released at the perfect time. I’m looking forward to the next one.
I have been watching your vlog for a few years now, and the quality of them keeps improving. This one is just amazing! Looking forward to the next episode of the JAPAN RAIL SERIES!! :D
Thanks for your continued support and glad to see you’re noticing the finer details and continued improvements with each upload 🙌🏻
Been waiting for this!
EDIT: This was absolutely incredible. You guys are doing an amazing job.
And those colours though! 😍
Thanks Thomas! You’re so quick off the mark from when each video is published! I actually re-graded the whole thing as I wasn’t too happy with how I did it first time around. I think it’s turned out much better since, but I still see where I can improve on things at the time of shooting. Always testing, always learning!
Joe Allam Got that bell ticked, so I'm always ready, haha. Keep it up :)
your videos are getting better and better and better and better. WELL DONE
awesome!
enjoyed this so much! such inspiring content hahaha
Amazing❤
Great idea for a mini-series. I will watch them all. Your editing skills keep getting better. Would like to hear more from Elly.
I have been in Japan last summer and this country is amazing! Great job, Joe! 😍 Subscribed 👌
Awesome video! Bad I only started to watch this series today, but the locations are very interesting, especially Ginzan Onsen, place that I always wanted to visit since I got a desktop wallpaper of it, years ago.
So well produced and photographed 👍
Ohhhhh myyy love this series so much already - you've done an amazing job kicking this off Joe! :)
It's so much fun for me to watch you two especially because I can relate to so many of your excitements on your trip. Apart from being a creator myself I am actually also a train-enthusiast, especially Japanese trains :D Seeing you freak out over the Shinkansen was just sooo relatable hahah :,D
and btw. I really like the "Japan-Rail-Series-graphics" you created for the series!
I'm looking forward to the upcoming episodes! :)
Thanks Teo! There's been a whole bunch of train enthusiasts appearing in the comments lately, so I guess I've found my "crowd" haha! Thanks for noticing the new titles too, they were on my mind long before actually starting the trip!
Amazing and cinematically pleasing seriously Joe 😍
Great video Joe [+ Elly!]👌🏻! Really looking forward to the rest of the series 🚅! It must’ve taken an enormous amount of time to edit + film it all, nice work! Im going to go to Japan for the 2nd time next year for the Olympics 🥳 🎌.
super high quality
Watching with a smile on my face, Great job very inspirational
Reading this with a smile on my face! Thanks
I look forward to the journey ahead with you guys! :)
the quality of your videos just get better... great production. ..
loving the shinkansen .. I travelled on it back in the 1990's when I used to visit Japan regularly.
can you show a map of your progress to give us an idea geographically where you are & going..?
Subscribed! I love your videos ❤️
Has a relaxed vibe to it & coupled with great, yet simple videography made this wonderful to watch. The 20 mins went by so fast. This series is gonna be great!
I really love travelling around Japan and this video inspires me to see more areas. Loved the video! Thanks for sharing. :)
Really enjoyed the pace and feel of this video, great job man 👍🏼
Thanks! We had a lot of footage to cover in this, and glad you enjoyed it!
Hello Joe and Elly, I loved this video so much, and yes the bullet train always floats my boat.
The streets with the snow look so silent, and the shot of the man walking alone was a lovely touch, the photography is so cool and you really feel the cold, and the beauty of Japan,
that bullet train is something else, I remember the first time on one last year, jumping about like a school boy, not good at my age but who cares.
The shot of the girls jumping and laughing in one of your shots always remind me of the gentle nature of these amazing people, and fantastic country, can't wait for your next one
they go to fast, see shu is posting some really cool stuff, you guys really hit the spot, and continue to inspire me, thank you for these visions of pure delight, be safe and enjoy.
Thanks Clive! You’ve pointed out a few of my favourite shots too! The guy alone in the train station could have easily panned out into its own short film if I’d followed him further haha. Gotta love the Shinkansen; it’s pure quality built on a foundation of core principles. And to think the first line was opened back in 1964!
Knowing that your latest videos of Japan are available always makes me happy!
Great video of a magnificent country. I had the opportunity to travel to Japan last summer, loved it, would love to go back in winter.
Just watched this again before going out to a wetland wood, I know you guys are missing the going out, but hey with you always,
awsome work or what!!
Absolutely brilliant work! I was in Japan for the first time last year - after seeing this, Hokkaido must be on the to-do-list for my next journey. What an amazing country.
I’m loving this! This makes me really wanna go to this part of Japan when I visit again. Such a fun trip!
Amazing videos Joe and how amazing is Japan 👍🏽
