We spent the night getting some shots around Shinjuku in Tokyo, Japan. I went for a really cinematic vibe with this vlog and I really hope you guys enjoy it!
Night photography is always incredibly difficult, but with practice and patience, I think we're slowly getting there!
Images were shot mostly on the Canon 7D mark II with Sigma Art 35mm 1.4 and Fujifilm X100F - around Shinjuku, Kabukichō, Omoide Yokochō and Golden Gai.

Ok. I’m one 1min. That intro footage is MENTAL!
Back to watching it now.
Cool! Really enjoyed that. That ending 👌🏼. Personally, I’d struggle big time in such a busy environment... it’s almost unbelievable how little everyone seems to care about you filming and talking. Is that ‘normal’ for Japan?
Haha! I always find it interesting when people comment whilst still watching it, but I appreciate the running thoughts as it happens! Japan is very comfortable to vlog in. Everyone keeps themselves to themselves and won’t disturb you if it looks like you’re doing something. They’re very considerate in all aspects of life!
Amazing cinematography and an excellent video.
The background music helped a lot
@@joeallam yep , try it in india hahah xD you'll get reactions as if you were rollin in a lambo . hehe , btw lovely content
cinematic intro--wow factors--100%--sick!
The train footage at the beginning and the alley shots were just buttery smooth! Trying out new ideas on your vlog is really paying off, Joe... In terms of creating really pleasing shots for us to watch. 😁
Yeah I’m stoked with the conscious effort I’ve put in to filming my vlogs differently for this trip. It’s definitely been working well and the feedback has been very positive!
One of the best opening segment of any photographer's vlog on RUclips. The look of the footage, the city and lights, the music... just fantastic.
Absolutely great intro, Joe. I'm a colorist for feature film and tv by profession and see a lot of footage from many different DPs. This shot is at that level. Very, very well done!
Wow that is a huge compliment! Thank you! I’m always learning on new techniques and styles and this RUclips channel has been a great outlet to develop that.
Joe. You probably won't read this but - please continue making videos like these. You style of video is unique, especially in an environment that Japan offers that most Western audiences have never seen before. You are inspirational and one of a kind in what you do. Your videography and Photography is stunning & really one of a kind. Downright beautiful job.
Thanks for that! I read every comment on here, though I can’t always reply to everyone. It’s genuinely heartwarming to read your support, so thank you! There will be plenty more to come from Japan for sure ✌️
Phyence Dude definitely is amazing
err... No doubt this guy has great digital skills but he pointed his camera out of the window on the train... you need to calm down.
For the intro alone, you well deserved the thumb up!! :)
love your cinematic shots Joe :)
2:40 - straight past the "No photo please" sign, like it's not even there.
Love the shots, something about bright lights in an otherwise dark photo just feels great!
EXEMPLARY cinematography. Bladerunner scenes. You are a talent.
This is one of my all time favorite videos of yours! The combination of cinematic footage, with those awesome night shots, and the great beats on top of it all, awesome!
Thanks! I was so keen to share this one as it too is one of my favourites!
Joe Allam Heyy was this Sony or Canon and did you use the 70-200 for pictures on that night? One last quastion.. how did you get the videos to be this sharp!? What picture profile setting🙈🙉
The feels are insane. the intro was really amazing plus the overlay of the voiceover in the subway. complete experience
That intro took me to another world and filled me with beautiful essence of tranquility
That intro is utterly mental. Well done
The way you stitched together the shots made it really entertaining.
I've lived there, married there, go there every 2 or 3 years. Still you're videos make me nostalgic for the place... keep it up.
The starting was just mesmerising...Keep doing your job and bring out the stellar stuffs...That cinematic intro was so so catchy....
Thanks! I was so SO happy when that shot all came together ✌️
Your videos are the perfect vlogs to grab a hot cup of coffee and watch the cinematic eye candy. That beginning shot in the vlog was beautiful.
That first shot was an absolute stunner.
The intro is absolutely stunning!! What a crazy train shot ! 👍
Your content is always on another level. Those cinematic shots, mixed with the ambient noise of the city was just incredible.
I find myself coming back to this video to look at the stunning cinematography.
In my honest opinion, you have the best photography and video content-related here on RUclips!
This intro gives me goosebumps...
The entrance video is lush. Some good stabilisation on lens or post. Lovely grade.
Cheers man! This GH5 stabilisation is definitely one of its best features for sure!
Japan is beautiful, I cannot wait to go back! So glad you were able to get another job that required you to visit again. Loved all of your previous Japan videos/x100f videos. I was hesitant on getting on till I watched your stuff. Now I have one!
Lovely work, mate!
I'm very excited! Nice shoots!
this has got to be one of my favorite videos on youtube to date - this captures street life back in japan as very vibrant and full of life and i love that
Everything about his video is amazing! The intro I fell in love instantly so smooth. Colours of Tokyo were amazing!!! My favourite video of all time!!
Omg, the opening sequence...magical!
The video was amazing and the guy singing Radiohead at 5:55 was just awesome! Your videos are wonderful.
Thanks! I wish I caught the first part of the guy singing, it was hilarious to stand outside and listen to the whole thing!
You are seriously the best vlogger ever.
Dude, I’m watching this in 720p on an iphone 6 screen and holy crap the quality is outstanding... Kinda just proved how 4k isn’t absolutely necessary.. certain shots are out of focus (the selfie shots) but your b roll footages are absolutely beautifully crisp and amazing colour work too!
Making me miss Japan. Need to go back...
I feel so lucky to watch in such a beautiful shot..!!
Wow! That intro was incredible!! More please! 😁💯💯
Amazing shots! Gave me 'Lost in Translation' vibes!
Amazing intro sequence Joe. Love your videos around Tokyo! Makes me miss Shinjuku so much.
Back here 4 years later just to see the intro shot again. "The Dance of the Tokyo Trains" will always be the nicest intro ever in my mind.
Wonderful and mesmerising cinematics!

That starting clip with the trains was so epic I wouldn’t have minded if the whole video went on like that, it was just SO GOOD, also those night time shots are EPICCCC, would be great if you could do an editing tutorial specifically for night shots, thumbs up man 👌👍

Guys, really nice. I just purchased an X100F, so I found you as I was researching the camera. I used to shoot with a D-200 back in the day, but now am getting back into travel/street shooting. I appreciate what you’re doing.
Somehow missed this one. Absolutely incredible! Might be my favorite of yours yet.

Hi, for the last year or so I’ve watched almost all of your videos regularly and I’ve always been truly inspired by your work. But I must say, this is one of my absolute favourite videos!
