- In this video me and Steve do the joinery on an external timber framed staircase. the frame is basically a slightly smaller version of the other frames in the building but with a handrail. the staircase is made from two big slabs with big chunky steps slid in to channels in the slabs. thanks to Steve for his help. I would not have been able to do it without him.
I must say you are absolutely brilliant at what you do, I'm not only saying this to make your head swell, but it's the truth of the matter and I know that your viewers will agree with me. Keep up the good work with your teachings Kris 😃😃😃
You know its a good day when Kris puts a video up
When I see his channel logo pop in my subscription feed, I know I'm in for at least a 30-45 minute mental holiday (while Kris works his ass off).
Always
Fact!
Sooooo true. Love this man's stuff. 🙏
I message my daughter when Chris has posted a video, it's my bit of good news for the day. Loved this one. Cannot wait for the next.
Better than watching BBC 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Can't agree more.
watching grass grow is better than watching the british bullshit craporation.
I cancelled my TV licence years ago. Refuse to fund the noncery and Britain bashing
Watch Britbox in Oz.
No WEF narrative on here. There is no mention of climate change, no pronouns, no racism, no box ticking, and no bullshit. Just an inspirational young man with incredible vision and tenacity. For me, this is everything good about RUclips.
I just cannot get over the craftsmanship of all the jointing that is done! Too me, it is truly puts me in AWH!!!! All of you are the picture of perfection!
I love how Kris is all about the craftsmanship, but also "a tool for every job."
Kris, first of all I must say that I find you to be an inspiration to hard, and accurate work. You show a passion in every stage of building everything. The time, and energy that you put into every thing you do is masterful! Your garage, or barn will be a solid; beautiful, the result of very hard work, and very inspirational! Keep up the great work; but I hope you and Dot find time to have short get aways from time to time. I know it's been some time since you began your farm, but you have come so far. Keep up the great work, I'll watch you as long as you post videos. Be Safe, and God Bless!
Absolutely brilliant!
Steve must have been a god send... well done, Kris.
Nearing completion... But I guess still some work to do.
Looks fantastic Kris! Great job.
When at school the 50’s I passed my Woodwork O level. I considered myself quite useful with joinery jobs though out 60 years. Nothing Idid then would have prepared me for a project like this one! You are phenomenal Kris. Keep them coming.
An elephant could walk up that staircase!!
Nice , love the build
Would love to see that lol
maybe a ramp at the bottom so he can drive his tractor up ;)
As we all know from Leo/Tally Ho channel, the chainsaw is an underrated carepntry tool.
Not to be a Safety Sally but (as a person who has run a chainsaw for years) cutting with a chainsaw without a face shield is... brave.
So right! Tally Ho has joinery on the next level, but she's a boat and joints need to be better in every way. The comparison is very nice though - two top men, exceptionally talented and inspirational human beings.
Medieval wood craft, facinating to watch, thank you.
That is a substantial looking staircase! Very well done mate! I'm very jealous of what you've achieved on your land :D
Can I request another sheep/ carding video when you guys next do it please? I love seeing you guys work as a team on a skill thats rarely seen nowadays. And I find it eeally interesting to watch the process ❤😊
Hi Chris I just have a great big smile when I see your video popping up 😊 real craftsmanship worth watching ❤😊
Kris, hermoso como esta quedando todo. Muy fuerte....muy buena construcción. Gracias y saludos desde Málaga - ESPAÑA. Abrazo.!
Wow, That's class! You must be absolutely chuffed with it.
That's a big balcony 😉 - should last the lifetime of the barn
Threaded rod should come in at least 1.5m, but a stainless-steel rod and make short threads each end would be just as good
Howdy Kris!! The upper floor of the barn would be a great home for you & Dot until you build your house!! Big bear hugs from Kenny in Ohio, USA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes a nice big space with views
Mate, that's absolutely amazing work. Very well done. I have ko doubt that's going to last for as long as you need and for a fair while longer afterwards. Love it.
The Romans worked out that a 6" rise with a 9" tread was optimal (though a longer tread is better for boots, as you said). There's nothing worse than steps with the wrong rise/tread so it's well worth getting them right. It's looking great!

Before you're doing much more of that Timber Framing stuff, Kris, perhaps a good look into that Mafell machine that the guys over at Escape to rural France are using. It looks like a cross between a rail saw and a motor plane. It gouges out those tenons in one go, super quick and neat.
Love these wood frame videos. I know there's a lot of work that goes into them, but seeing everything slot solidly together is very satisfying.
Out of interest, is the mortiser sharpened the same as a chain saw? I imagine it blunts off quite quickly?!
Great chain saw skill Chris. Just watch that kick back zone like a hawk when using the tip or the bar. Great 👍🏻 work!😊
Kris have a chat with local electrical wholesalers the can get threaded rod many meters long 😊
Well stuff for work is going to be late this morning 🎉
26:21 Totally AMAZING engineering and execution. Every detail box ticked off. Wow ... just wow!🤩
Wuderfull handcraft I coud do it, but to OLD ( 77), and living in a apartment in outer GÖTEBORG. Janne E
there is a calculation you can do to figure out how comfortable a staircase is actually
it's "2*s+a", where s is the height of the step and a is the depth of the step whee you place your foot. the result should be close to 0.63
when messuring the depth you have to messure it from the front of the step until the front of the following step, since sometimes the steps will overlap on the back
I love how the geese are so used to woodwork noise they just stand there watching.
I like to watch the milling it makes the film from tree to finished product. some led tops on the post tops would be a nice touch. The barn will be of sufficient size to build you a Welsh oak bungalow when you are ready to begin that project, Kris. their rely isn't any reason why you can't make a Bungalow out of half-timber like the barn. I'd like to point out that with today's material at hand, please don't hesitate to let me know. Les the UK England
If I was Kris I'd be moving into the loft when it's completed, all those excellent views from the dormers and the new balcony. 😉👍
That's a work of art 😮
Kris, what are you doing? 😂This is my normal Sunday night viewing, this means I’m gonna have to finish work early today.😂
Precision with a chainsaw ... Kris is amazing. Once again, solving problems and not complaining about. 😊❤
What a great treat and surprise to brighten up a rainy Friday afternoon in northern France! Thanks, Kris and Steve! Superb work (and vid), as ever! Gray
Hi Kri!!I feel so good too see u doing that beautiful construction. U r a inspiration. Wonderful.
Like your bolted post on slate. May use that slate idea myself.
Enjoyed that video on an early Friday morning here in the Midwest. As usual top notch old world joinery. Steve is a master at what he does! Glad you had him to help on this monster project!
The craftsmanship and dedication that goes into your builds is just fascinating and inspiring. I am in constant admiration, it just brings a smile to my face. Such a solid, proper building, something to be truly proud of - and you film it all! Keep up the hard work Kris, I hope this project doesn't burn you out too much. If so, don't feel bad about taking a much deserved break. I hope to one day have some land and build like you!
"Theres only so much milling you can film"
Theres whole channels dedicated to just milling and somehow they keep getting consistent views 😂😅😅
I wish some channels were as conscious about how repetitive their content is, but i do understand they just want to keoe getting out regular videos for income and if thats what they are doing.. thats what they are doing. Truly.. if i want to watch the people, i will watch it anyway!
It seems like it's been raining non-stop there. Unfortunately, every time you have a video, it's gloomy and raining.
Kris, I've been watching you so long, It's kind of great to see that little slice of grey developing with my own 😅😂👌 you really have managed an incredible amount of stuff in that time! 👌🤯 blows my mind every video
Yeah im getting old :) Its been quite a few years now since I started making the videos. I always find it quite interesting that someone could find my channel now and watch me age 9 years in a few days. Thanks for the comment.
Kris ,as always very entertaining videos of your mammoth barn job. That no doubt will keep you busy for while yet.
Kris, man - 9 years?
I remember one of your first video's, you talking about looking for a more satisfying way of life, a city boy becoming a farmer and a craftsman!
well done both of you, its looks absolutely divine, i,d be sat on top of stairs with coffee and just taking it all in, marvelous!
A lot of hard work! Looks like a massive structure that should last a very long time. Well done!
Wow
This being the/a barn imagine what the future Harbour abode will look like 😅
I wait…..for a new video ❤❤ bye from Italy, Chris ! 🇮🇹🇮🇹
Work on the barn building is nice but would also like to see how the farm is doing
Woodworking and welding, two things that are a pleasure to watch.
I cant wait to see the house you build from that barn for you and dot ❤🥰
What a thing of beauty.❤
If you google it you can get 2 metre threaded rod, but Screw fix etc stock tube nuts to join lengths together. If that helps. 👍
Looking good! Yeah I wouldn't try making wooden stringers, buy the welded steel gal ones also wouldn't trust my wood work skills on such - though did my own hand rails they handled my weight 120kg suspended off them for 10s at a time so deemed it would be ok for the average person or child. I would have put a landing in looks a decent way down if you tripped - I had to do for mine as the stringers were second hand and didn't have the length for 3m off the ground - so got a landing at 1200 front and back.
By, thats a grand staircase! Excellent work you two. Enjoyed watching the process, well done. Stay well all.
Beautiful work and craftsmanship. This will be around for many generations to come.
The thought process in calculating this is beyond my miniscule brain capacity and I LOVE IT!
Its great to see how good you've got on power tools!
Kris I appreciate your videos but if you could mask up silicosis is real and a terrible thing to live with nasty nasty condition please mask up buddy tx for the video though your a natural talented fella
undercover at last -working in the dry!!! great progress - like the zoom in out bits of filming
Look forward to Kris putting up a video, when it drops it’s like Christmas morning 😂😂😂
That was awesome .
Absolutely fantastic, really enjoy your Videos, thank you so much!
Solid stairs Kris. They will last more then a lifetime. Thanks for posting....
Love to see the progress Kris! And what an amazing 2 helpers you have! You can see the team really works together well
ALWAYS looking forward to your uploads! :D They are great!
This is absolutely beautiful 🤯 the fact that its outside and will weather, is a little saddening, but that balcony has a bsautiful view! 🎉
👍👌👏
Best regards, luck and especially health to all involved people.
Absolutely incredible skills! That staircase will outlast a cat 5 hurricane.
Steve worth every penny, progressive. Really looks mighty good.
Couple of good Ratchet straps would pull that together nicely and hold while it’s lifted
He worth watching hard working man
👍 Wonderfull Friday treat. Thanks Kris for sharing.
Fantastic work. Happy for you on your progress, cheers mate ☕️
I would have put some protection layer on the steps before they stepped on with muddy boots
Great joinery, congratulations. Greetings from Finland.
Absolutely fantastic staircase 😊 What a guy Steve is Kris 👍🏻
Amazing job well done its just a shame your not posting as much as you did in the past
Fabulous! Well done gentlemen! 🎉
As usual realy enjoyed the video. Its big and chunky.
Nice work Kris. Getting close now. Thanks for sharing 👍
Coming along nicely but I have a feeling that you may well come to regret not roofing over the stairs and landing as over time they will become slippery when wet due to algae growth especially in our wet climate
1/2 inch galvanised chicken wire mesh works wonders to avoid slipping especially when after a frost
Another brilliant video Kris and no cat this time 😮😮😮😮😮
Excelente trabajo🔨✏️👍🇦🇷
So enjoyed watching that Kris. Top job 👍🏼
Love your vids thank you
Kris and Steve . 👏👏👏👏👍🏻
Barn or house?
Barn
I believe he also has office space upstairs, as well. That'll clear up some space in his tiny house.
@@cherriemater that’s interesting, as it’s no longer an agricultural barn so would require planning permission, building warrant and structural engineer’s certification.
Genuinely interested as to which route he used to gain the necessary permission to build it as we’d like to do similar!
@@livingoffgridinscotland I'd have to go back through his planning videos, but he does talk about it. (My old.brain just can't remember. )
Always great to watch Kris ----- thank you.
The sheer level of craftsmanship put into every timber, beam, joist, fitting.. just mind-boggling.
There's my Friday night sorted 😆
Most Excellent Kris. Glad to see some Live edges showing, and that last diagonal brace with the gentle swoop of the branch. gives a Natural feel and look. 👍👍. What a View across the countryside, i love it . Congrats on another giant task almost complete. The landing will be fun, theres so much you can do there. perhaps use the stones like the foundation walls, and that will tie in. Enjoy its Stellar!!! ya in Anerica our code is 7highX10 inches deep for staitcase treads. Yur steps are Grand🔧🛠️🔧🙏🙏🙏Be blessed
well done guys
I love this stuff ,you are a real man
World's most solid staircase indeed! It's amazing what you've accomplished with this project. The amount of work and skill required to get this far is mindboggling but you've done it! I've only ever built 1 staircase and there are a lot of little things to consider that people seldom think about whilst using them. And of course the first step is always extra tricky :)
It's funny. After spending several weeks, hundreds of board feet, and half a dozen helpers, I'd have thought you'd have fabricated all the components of your barn, but noooooo. You're still fabricating away. I do enjoy watching. North Carolina, USA
A stairway that will last 400 years!
Hi Kris, Dot, Snoop, hope you're all well. Super video, as usual, and great progress on the barn. Big milestone getting access sorted. Looks like the landing might become a popular viewing platform in the future. Older oak is greying nicely. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe and keep up the good work. 🧔👍✌
Awesome stairs…looks like they, along with the rest of the structure, will probably last 100 + years !
As I have said in past episodes of this build, your building a Very Cool Barn, Kris ❗️
LOVE YOUR CHANNEL, it's been a real pleasure to be able to watch, someone with your skill & determination, build your homestead from scratch !
Would these be considered traditional English constructions methods? Just curious. I visited England and Scotland for the first time recently and the older buildings that I entered seemed to have a Stoney, joint wood construction vibe, I could be completely wrong…Thanks I’ve enjoyed your videos off and on since the finish of the original cabin/home. I’m glad to see your success.
Good start to my gay thanks so much.
Hello there Kris I just like to say a fantastic staircase you made. Your lifting A frame must be worth it's weight in gold without that I don't think you could have built that bon , I don't know if you like the sound of wood being plane with a good plane it sounds so very satisfying to me looking forward to the next video 👍👌.
Ralph
That’s a great video Kris. Great to see Steve and Will on site. Miserable weather in Wales at this time of year. I love watching chippies making custom steps. Good choice on getting a bigger tread than riser, especially as you get older. Out of interest have you had many visits from Building Control? They were all over me like a cheap suit when I did my self build. Straight out of college and no experience.
