Installing a New Wood Stove in my Off Grid Wood Carving and Archery Workshop

- I make a brick and stone backsplash and hearth for a new woodstove to safely heat my off grid workshop. I also finally seal the exterior of my timber workshop and clad the interior wall of the addition with tongue and groove pine and cedar. With a dry space to work on archery equipment, I prepare my bows and arrows for the upcoming moose and deer seasons.

Hi, I'm Shawn James. I am a passionate outdoorsman living the life of my dreams in a log cabin that I built by myself in the Canadian wilderness. Join me and my golden retriever, Cali and listen to the sounds of the forest in this relaxing wilderness setting. Hello, my grandma used to love watching your videos, she would always have them on our Roku tv, she was always checking for new videos of yours. She has died on the 8th of this month, I want to thank you for bringing so much joy to her days.
Sorry for your loss - sincere condolences. Now, you will watch Shawn and those good memories of your Grandma will be with you.
@@whynotb3174 thank you. That woman literally raised me from the time I was 9 because I didn’t have parents. Life will never be the same without her.
@@JakeMckay1738 so sorry for your heartbreak
So sorry for your loss.
My condolences. RIP Grandma
These are my favorite videos, watch him do building things. And it’s longer than 12 minutes.
Nice Shawn! You are a hard worker! Blessings to you and family!🧚🏻🧚🏻🧚🏻❤️
日本からおはようございます。
Glad to see your making it New and Improved .
Hope you and Mrs. James are enjoying the BEST TIME of YEAR ....
Fall is the season, The old Bibitzenburger brought back some of my memories of the 70's - 80's ..
The bow hunting was a Happy time for me ...
Take care and Thanks for your Video's as ALWAYS ...
Give that Yeller dog a big hug for me ...
Good evening everybody Shawn is back with another upload 😂
Makes me happy
I have the same wood stove in my hunting cabin. I did a mod to it to keep smoke from rolling out of the door when you feed it by installing a sheet metal flap on hinges just inside the door. You push wood in and the flap moves then drops back down to block any smoke. Also reversed the damper so it actually works instead of being too closed off.
What is the name brand of the woodstove?
I believe Dick Proenneke would be amazed! And a bit jealous of the beauty you've created! It's perfection. He would happily have sat with you, feeding his welfare birds over a cup of coffee.....
Great work Shawn! Be careful with that little stove when you put wood in it, I have one and put a piece of wood through the Ceramic that recirculates the smoke to the pipe and once you get a hole in it the ceramic starts to fall apart. About $80 US for a new ceramic.
Was just about to head off to bed, saw this pop up on my feed. Thought about leaving it to enjoy tomorrow morning, but of course couldn't resist and have now cracked open another beer and will sit down to enjoy it now!
That is an awesome archery workshop and wood stove. just in time before it started raining you and Cali take care and have a wonderful weekend.
☕🇨🇦👍
Wow. Beautiful
Hello from Black Forrest sends you Sabine 😍
Don't know if your trying a new camera, but lots of bluriness. Still watching though. Just wanted to make you aware.
Seems to have focused on the crossbow
No blurriness on my iPad.
I wonder if your You tube needs to be updated.
no blurriness on my ipad either
sound sounds all fucked up
LOVED you scratching the back of your neck with your handsaw! Also, as always, I adore Cali.

OMG, the images at 9 minutes, of you walking into that forest were utterly breath-taking!!!!
Adoro essa vida no campo!❤E as construçoes rusticas!!!
Your moose call set off my bloodhounds. 😂
😆
your moose call reminded me of putanescu...come and get it...if I think I know what I'm talking about
The fireplace corner is beautiful.
Your video gave me lots of inspiration/ideas for when We start our timber frame home build. What brands are the Bows? We installed the same wood stove in our Conex box. Great video. Take care.
Did you damage your camera by any chance? The autofocus isn't working properly anymore.
Also I miss the food prepping/making segment in your video's, was always a nice break in the video. May I make a suggestion to bring it back?
You may
@@MySelfReliance Ah thank you, hereby I suggest to bring the food prepping/making segment back into the video please. It's nice to see how you use your homegrown products into a meal!

This is the best content in my opinion. Thank you Shawn. From my cabin in VA.
There is obviously an art form to making arrows, I've noticed this in your video. Wood carving made me think of Doug Linker. I'm sure you're busy enough with all your projects but having him and yourself ( I didn't realize you carved) in your workshop carving would be nice.
When are you gonna start doing cooking videos ? 😀
No bluriness for me
FYI Opening music is "Five Tribes" by Hunter Quinn
Adoro seus vidio
Boa noite Shawn, tudo neste lugar,e o que tu faz é Fantástico.👏👏👏 Deus te abençoe sempre.🙏😘🤗
Thank you Shawn .

Another great video! You have the magic formula - self-reliance, self-sufficiency, public personality, a wide variety of skills, top of the lime videographer and editor.
The setup you do for each video segment is amazing. I can only imagine the total time and effort it takes to do a 30 minute video. I suspect you have at least 6-8 hrs of effort invested in each 30 minute segment, if not more. But, you seem to be a natural to just include the video capture as part of your normal work routine and then take the necessary time to do a very professional edit. I only hope that you can keep up the pace for the next several years so we can all continue to enjoy your contributions.
You are the next generation of Richard Proenneke using the latest technology and techniques to educate, inform and educate. What a legacy you are leaving.
Thanks for coming into our homes and sharing your life’s journey. Bravo!!!
This set up will probably work OK, but it is safer to spend a little more and use real "fire brick" which is usually yellow, and real "refractory cement." They can handle more heat without getting the place burned down. Also they don't aborb moisture which can turn to steam under heat and blow up in your face. It is very dangerous to do welding on concrete, because it can contain surprising amounts of molecular moisture that turns to steam and can violently explode like shrapnel without warning.
It’s completely unnecessary and absolute overkill to use firebrick and refractory cement for a hearth. His brick veneer hearth will be just fine. Firebrick and refractory cement are used where there is direct contact with flames. His cast iron stove most likely has a firebrick lining, that’s where fire bricks are needed.
@@beefchicken Yes, if all goes as expected. Accidents happen in case of the unexpected, like a kid messing around with the set up and spilling out hot embers. Or a senile visitor fifteen years from now who doesn't pay attention to what they are doing. It's like seat belts. When you need one you need one, and if it isn't already in place the deficiency can get a person killed. Same with fire safety. Overkill in the beneficial direction can make a big positive difference. Fire kills. So does freezng to death out in the middle of nowhere if your cabin burns down and the blizzard windchill is minus sixty degrees and all you have is your longjohns and no cell phone.
Shawn, I don’t think I can add anything new to the accolades you have already received from everyone else who is as loyal to your channel. Just know I do so look forward to your new videos every week as well. I know you’re extremely busy trying to get everything done while you can before that cold Canadian winter comes in. Thank you for taking time out to show us more of what you have been up to. Looking forward to more.
I do have a suggestion, I don’t know if your beautiful wife would be into it, but maybe she should have a channel for what she is doing on her end of your family becoming self sufficent.
Nice stove.
Hello from the rocky coast of Maie, US. September 27, 2024. I was hatched in Winnipeg, in 1952. My late uncle's grain farm is in Ontario.
Really nice looking floor and walls around the spot for the wood stove. Thanks for posting and sharing.
He did a fantastic job on those. That larger stove will warm the space nicely.
The wood stove its all the money..
I can’t believe you haven’t built yourself a stool yet . Where does the time go .
Looks swell Shawn...ill bet its going to be cold one this year,,,we have to pay for a good summer you know..im putting foam board in the attic..and sealing everything..had one of those spotted moth flies here yesterday,,they say to kill them quick,,there bad for everything.and trees mostly..i guess ohio has them now..i like everything hung up to..tired of looking for tools, haa,,i like your cement work,,gives me ideas...hold the fort down man..
Индиана Джонс, используй джут или паклю, зачем ты используешь стекловату и каменную вату? У вас что, ее не производят?
It’s gonna be very warm in the winter months, very nice Shawn. Hey Cali ❤️👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🤩🤩🤩💯💯💯
I sure would like to know where this workshop is in relation to the cabin. It seems like it's on the back 40 and nowhere near the cabin, but it's not clear.
You do beautiful work

Wayyyyy back when he first started building his old cabin and outdoor kitchen, he had some "teaching moments". He's come a long way since then. No one is born knowing what he knows. Trial and error...and EFFORT! He is admirable!
What kind of stove is that? The shop is looking good 👍

Great craftsmanship, where is your dog Calli 🤔🤔🤔
Had an antique stove similar to that and had it lined with refractory from the foundry. That sucker stayed warm for a long long time! ❤.
It looks great yet another masterpiece by you getting the corner ready for the stove. Great video.
Jamaica 🇯🇲 here good seeing you I am realizing that I am begin unsubscribes not only on your channel but others that I watch you building is going awesome always a pleasure watching you work blessings
Six months behind on your videos but can't bear to watch the snowy winter ones just yet so am working my way backwards until I've caught up.... actually felt jealous of the chickens who you built the coup for -- looks almost edible!
happy weekend Gods blessings over you, Mark 4:39

Hallo Shawn, where is cally in this new video?
Dear greetings from Renata from bernau near Berlin
May I ask with great interest, what is that material you used to wash your windows? It looked like a plastic bag?
What stove did you go with?
Been looking for one for a similar deal but yet to land on one.
When you built that shop, I thought, No way! He'll never use any shop that small! Lol.. I think it was a rush to get out of your other cabin, away from possible trouble, maybe? But I knew it was gonna be enlarged at some point! 😊
Hey Shawn and family! Looks like a beautiful homested. How has your mind, body and spirit changed in the years since you transitioned to living off the land? Are you noticing any profound shifts? Sleeping? Mental health? Physical endurance?
A very satisfying build video Shawn. Thanks for posting.
I think you'll find that stove will provide plenty of heat for your work shop. I have one just like it in my kitchen and it does a fine job. It's also good for cooking!
hey Shawn, is your workshop far off from the cabin? Everything's looking great. Fall feels like the perfect time for getting stuff done.
I thoroughly enjoy watching this man work. I have bad anxiety and very bad insomnia, and watching him calms me down. I wish I knew what music he's playing. I'd buy it because as I'm listening to it, and I'm falling asleep. I would leave it playing all night to help me sleep.
I enjoy your work, sir. Keep up the great work, and I look forward to your videos. God bless you.
He lists the music under this video. Hit the “more” button on and check it out. I hope this helps 😊
I'm not finding information about the music. I'd also like to know who it is.
I was going through a bad bout with anxiety several years ago and found solace in his videos, too. I hope you continue to feel better.
Love the "moose" calls.
You appear to be improving with your archery.
You really are "a Shawn of all trades!"
Greetings from here in Finland, I have always wondered why in Canada the intervals between cherries are sealed with some mass. In Finland, when the log frame is assembled, a strip of insulation wool of a suitable width is placed between the logs, which is enough to seal the gaps between the logs
Just letting you know that you have gone from off grid to being rich off grid
The old bitzenburger seeing that brought back a lot of memories.
What type of insulation are you pushing into cracks, what type of caulk? Thanks for all the great videos!
There is something about watching an artist at work. The music is spot on Shawn. Enjoyed every second thank you.
Woodstovr is the best heat!
As usual! Another tremendous project! Well done!
Work shop looking great 👍Should be warn an cozy

I’ve been following u since the 1st cabin! 🪵
Your skills are astounding
And ur creativity to establish another homestead is beautiful❤
Cali is living the Dream in those Canadian woods🐾
That looks awesome. You are so talented no matter what you do. So enjoy your channel and watching all you have done building your homestead ~😊♥️
I was just wondering what your plan is for providing firewood when you become to old to chop it yourself. I'm interested because I of similar age and I want to do the same thing you are.
How appropriate when hanging various tools that at 11:52 the first screwdriver is a Robertson square drive.
Greetings Shawn. We really appreciate you and all you've done; your helpful tips are encouragement to us that we can do some of the same things to be self reliant.
Nice job on putting down the bricks 🧱 looks pretty 👍
1 day 100 years from now i hope your ancestors find that place.
What was the chinking material you were using to seal the log walls? How long is it supposed to last? Thx.
What is your preferred recurve? 50lb?
Work you have done on the entire homestead, love the stone work ,have a wonderful day and God bless
