We started our food storage when we had been married one week. You are so right about variety and seasonings. Remember, store what you eat and eat what you store. PS we have been married 46 years.

I have a very small house and appreciated what you said at the end about storing in a bucket in the closet. It gives me hope that even I can have food storage. We are currently in a tight financial situation and it's teaching my family the importance of being prepared for the unknown and how to be frugal. Thank you for your videos as I find them very encouraging

I accidentally cut out where I mentioned that you can find small bags of beans and rice for as little as a few dollars at the Dollar Store. I completely understand feeling overwhelmed by it - Don't worry, little by little, day by day, you'll get there.

Couponing could also help. Even if was just a little bit at first. Ask family, friends and co-workers that get the Sunday paper, to save the coupons for you. Coupon Mom is a good site for help and she also has u-tube video's too. Shop with a specific list, stick to that list. No extra things. Food pantries are good too. It's generic food most times, but it helps your family to thrive thru the month. Check it out in your area or near you. Good luck

Being prepared, fiscally responsible and frugal/thrifty describes how I live...... keep teaching too! That so pays off, trust me, others learn by example, even when you don’t think they are! Lol sewing, crafting, board games.... they too, are skills and activities that can be fun to practice and are often huge assets....

Just an fyi: my dad used tin cans to store cabin bread and long life stuff cause nothing could get in there. So if you have roof space, you could store beans, rice, cabin bread etc up there. Dont worry bout summer heat, that should be a good way to heat treat them for you, but i would also put bayleaf in there.

Hello my beautiful friend!!! So lovely to see your beautiful face and hear your sweet voice. You really are such an inspiring light in this somewhat less than perfect world.
Your pantry has really come to be something wonderful over the years! I’m so happy for you and your family. I thought I’d share with your viewers a little story that may help them to understand just how much something like this is so important. So many get caught up in the “doomsday, zombie apocalypse” scenario and that’s not really what it’s about. Well not for most of us. I went on permanent disability back in 2015. One year later my husband had a massive heart attack and was unable to work for 2 years! Had we not had the staples stored...rice, beans, spices, herbs, grains, cooking oil, dehydrated foodstuff, household supplies like tp and such we’d have lost everything!! Our medical expenses were so high we simply wouldn’t have been able to make it. Food is expensive. If you can grow, preserve and store even just a bit it really adds up. Now if the zombies show up one day I also have ammo stored but they’re the least of my worries! Hahahahaha 🤣 Im teasing a bit but I too would love to see folks thinking more like this. The thought of children being hungry simply rips my heart out. We’re on a fixed income now and while I can’t buy as much as I used to, I always leave a small amount in the budget to go towards our long term needs. The dollar stores, places like Aldi (if you have one) even Walmart are good places to stock up. Even Aldi has excellent options for organic now. Plus when you’re thinking about about an emergency situation don’t think so much about JUST organic. Buy the healthiest option you can afford!! The important thing is just getting over the hump so to speak. Weathering the storm until you can get your family back to your normal. I hope this LONG message helps someone. I pray for peace, love and Gods Grace for all of you. My dear Chelsea, big hugs and lots of love to you and the family sweet friend. Blessings always ~Lisa

Well we have had a pantry for 48. Years ever since we came to the farm. Security is a very important aspect in happiness. One never knows when a crop failure will hit, a job loss or any other thing. Stating small is important not to get overwhelmed. And whatever you do do not tell you family, they will tell you now they really know it you have completely lost it the stores are full of groceries. Been there. Now it is just us and my pantry is still good for at least 11/2 years and maybe even more. The ice storm taught me a lot, no electricity for one month does it every time.

If you store food, I'd love to hear about some of the things you feel are most important to have in your pantry. If we didn't have a farm and raise our own meat, dairy and eggs I would likely have some other things in mine that other people might need to think about, like canned/dried milk, tinned meats/fish etc. It would be helpful to list your suggestions here under this comment to make it easy for other people to find. Thank you!
I wish you all a wonderful day and I'll see you soon.

Living on Vancouver Island with threat of earthquakes, I have canned lots of water. You can reuse/refill the jars every year or so without the wasted plastic. I have supplies of dried veggies like carrots, potatoes and onions. Also, people don't talk about storing enough animal or pet food for emergencies.

Little Mountain Ranch one condiment we like to keep on hand that has clean ingredients is Franks Hot Sauce. A little goes a long way and it makes everything taste better. We put it in our savory polenta, in rice dishes, on meat, in sauces and soups etc. The ingredients list is Aged Cayenne Peppers, Vinegar, Water, Salt, Garlic Powder.

I don't know how but I completely missed my salt, vinegar and pasta, which I have a ton of... On the cutting room floor I guess.
I was just looking at Tang in the store and thinking it might not be a bad thing to have on hand. Dan is picking up raisins and nuts right now which will round things out a bit.

@@LittleMountainRanch Something else to consider that was used a lot during WW2 are dehydrated eggs and milk. Easy enough to rehydrate, stores easily in mice proof containers like canning jars. Or, if you know that you have a reliable source of power, both scrambled eggs and milk freeze pretty well. They don't necessarily taste wonderful on their own once thawed, but are fine as ingredients in other dishes. Most cheeses also store well long term if they are packaged properly (they also freeze) as most hard cheeses are made through a fermenting process anyway. And pretty near all fermented foods are good for quite a few years in the pantry. Meats can also be canned successfully - just make sure you get a good canning book and follow the instructions to the letter. Its only in the last half century that we've had ready access to a grocery store. Many places on the planet still don't.

I live in Sacramento where we were just alerted to prepare for a two week self quarantine should the need arise due to the Corona virus. I am single in an apartment and shop week to week for food and supplies. Today I made my shopping list for my "prepper" supplies. It truly is an eye opener when I consider what I need for just two weeks without leaving my apartment. Thanks for your tour. I am envious of all those jars of honey you put up. Yum.

Chelsea, good video - and thanks for making what you "put by" accessible. I build a few extra dollars into my grocery budget for an extra one of this and two of that for exactly the kind of scenario you've described. I've been through several hurricanes and been isolated when trees went down across roads, power was out, etc and being able to prepare food, heat water to wash with and light oil lamps kept me from feeling lonely and desperate. btw, the spices in plastic containers lose the essential oils that give them their flavor, over time. I decant them into glass and keep them out of the light.

I hope you got to eat some of your buttercup before they went bad. They are my favorite. They did not do well in north east USA this year either. For preparedness lots of extra drinking water on hand. Medicines, pet food. A few cans of gingerale and gatorade. Canned goods from grocery store, use marker to write best by date, making easier to use up oldest cans first. I feel we should all be prepared as we can be. I'd like it if everyone would and could have at least a couple weeks worth of food, water, and medical/first-aide supplies in their homes. I love all your videos. I get excited to see how you have all these projects and ventures, and the little windows into your family life. Things I can never do, but am so glad you are!

As ever, thank you so much for this video!
    About Oatmeal
I eat it almost every morning, and have done for over a decade. I have several spices that I rotate in and out of my morning porridge: cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, cloves, turmeric (usually in combo with other spices), dried ginger, and allspice. I also rotate unsalted butter and plain old salt. When available, I'll add a teaspoon of jam, but fresh berries are heavenly. If you can get them or make them, rose water and orange blossom water are excellent to cook with. I often add rose water and cardamom to my oatmeal. (and homemade ice cream!) Somehow, I never get tired of it.
About Spices (more than Herbs, but also Grains)
I know you probably can't do this, but I order spices from a company called Sadaf in Los Angeles. They sell primarily Middle Eastern and North African spices and foodstuffs. The prices are excellent as is the quality. I wonder if there isn't a similar company in Vancouver or one of the big Eastern cities in Canada? If not Middle Eastern then perhaps Asian of some sort? Portland and Seattle both have Russian import shops that sell a wide variety of delicious foodstuffs.
I know you probably know this already, but I tend to buy whole spices and whole grains (rather than ground) for their longevity. Lately, though, I have been buying spice mixes of all sorts, but especially North African: Moroccan BBQ and berbère are my current favorites.
I am constantly adding varieties to the herbs, shrubs and trees in my gardens as well. The point is to have as many useful herbs and spices growing on property as possible. Medicinal herbs and spices, too! I planted _Arnica chamissonis_ a few years ago. It looks like a daisy or very short sunflower and is supposed to be a good substitute for _A. montana._ Plenty of willow for fevers and headaches, not to mention baskets and useful outdoor weaving. Last fall I planted autumn olive and goumi, both of which fix nitrogen.
I just got some Szcheuan/Sichuan pepper _(Zanthoxylum simulans)_ and sanshō/Japanese pepper _(Zanthoxylum piperitum)_ from Sky Nursery in Seattle. The _Z. simulans_ is only about a foot tall right now, and looks like a rose with particularly stout thorns. If you haven't had it before, it's sort of lemony but delicately numbs the tongue! The _Z. piperitum_ is much more delicate, but also thorny. Both are used culinarily and medicinally. The wood is highly prized, too. They would require a high tunnel in your area, though.
I have also been adding in native plants as quickly as I can. Lots of berries and thorny plants You probably have access to many on your property. I am using them to divert the wildlife away from the gardens and food forest. Hedgerows!
Best wishes! Stay healthy and happy!

This is such an important topic. So many things can happen to necessitate a well stocked pantry. Job loss, illness, world events etc. We are a family of 5 (have 7 kidlets but 4 have grown) on an off grid homestead in northern Minnesota and I'm guessing we have about an 18 month to 2 year pantry.... I'm only on my 3rd year of serious gardening so utilizing the store has really helped. Were putting in a huge root cellar this year and I am upping my gardening game.... your gardens are just so inspiring and beautiful. Thank you for sharing your beautifully tidy pantry and I can't wait to see your grow room ♡ be safe ♡

Yes---even a moderate bit of food set back gives peace of mind. We don't have to prep for some humongo world-changing disaster......those beans, rice, extra TP and detergent, sanitary products, etc. may be needful in the case of a job loss, illness, or just a week or two power outage or the like. I grew up with parents who stocked ahead--especially in the wintertime when we normally got tons of long-lasting heavy snow. Although they only hobby-gardened and didn't can very much, they did make a big fall trip to a large grocery store and we left with the bumper dragging the ground there was so much food in the trunk of the car. Cases of soups, beans, canned veggies, boxes of crackers and other boxed things, etc. They even stocked up a bit on sweets and treats. While we grow much of our food and we do can/freeze/dehydrate....we still follow similar principles and stock up. We stock all types of foods (even some of the less-healthy, but saves better on the shelf stuff for any long term emergency--like mac and cheese, noodle meals, etc. I also stock up on OTC pain relievers/fever reducers and TONS of herbal preparations like tinctures, salves, capsules, and single herbs. I keep an herbalist bag at the ready with an old fashioned thermometer and magnifying glasses so we can see the numbers (middle age = diminished eyesight?) , stethoscope and BP cuff, suture kit, and plenty of emergency type herbal preparations. We stock ahead on cleaning supplies--I keep 2 5 gallon buckets of powder detergent, white vinegar and essential oils for making cleaning spray, bleach (you never know), rubbing alcohol, peroxide, bandaids, poultices in the freezer ready to go, activated charcoal, colloidal silver--and more. Your main focus here was food and I can certainly get behind the idea of saving back whatever you can manage! God bless!

Great video, thank you. And it’s GREAT when I/someone see’s a “Prepper pantry” RUclips video that someone says “start little by little, I have so much because I’ve been doing this for years”. About 6 months ago I’ve been watching lots of “prepper pantry, canning, frugal and dehydrated foods” types of videos and no one I’ve seen mentions that (I’ve seen now about 2-3 that has). For about 2 months I’ve always felt ‘they have so much. I don’t have that kind of money. I can’t do that. I won’t be ready’ I was overwhelmed with starting but videos like this one “you” helps people feel more at ease “start with 1 thing at a time”. After those 2 months (of doing nothing, only feeling overwhelmed) I figured I’d start buying 1 big appliance once a month, I also buy extra when I can (food, miscellaneous). Soooooo THANK YOU!! This video will help someone (and myself, a reminder) not feel overwhelmed on starting or that they will “be ready”. 👍🏽👍🏽

I love your pantry! I'm still obsessed with ketchup- even in my 30s, no judgement here ;-). Another thing that I like to keep on hand that I consider part of my preparedness pantry is extra jars. I try to keep a lot of EMPTY jars (and lids!) on hand at all times. We have 4 deep freezers plus 2 freezers on refrigerators and my thought is in a long term power outage, much of our meat could be saved by canning. we have a gas stove and outdoor propane burner. I try to keep enough propane on hand that we could use those to can with. I'm sure its possible on a fire but the propane is far easier for me to control the temperature with and moving a hot pressure canner is not fun. I also keep mass amounts of salt, sugar and curing salt on hand in case we were to have to process animals in a dire situation (our land isn't enough to feed the number of animals long term so my plan in a worst case scenario would be to butcher what we need to, to scale back our numbers). None of these are really specific food items but they give me a little peace of mind.

Such awesome advice! I keep a ton of jars and lids, too, but an outdoor propane burner I don't have. What kind of salt do you store. I have curing salt and enough canning and table salt for a year, but not enough for, say, salt pork.

We use our working pantry for long term storage by restocking before it gets too empty. It also comes in handy when money is tight during the winter when work slows down. I just did an inventory and will be including more stored food in my meal planning as there are a few things I have not been using. We also raise all our meat and have a generator to keep the freezers going in case of a power outage. We store pasta and canned tomatoes to make sauce primarily as it is one of the few things one of my autistic grandsons will eat. The other likes chicken which we raise and rice so lots of that as well. There is lots of oatmeal and Red River cereal as well as several boxes of dried cereal for variety as well as a couple of Costco sized bags of raisins for breakfast.

I've done a prepper pantry, of sorts, for years. I will stock up on canned soups and vegetables when they go on sale and then rotate them with what I currently have in stock. I also have cans of tuna, chicken, roast beef hash, and spam. I always make sure that I have pasta sauces, mayo, ketchup, and those kind of things. I actually run to pantries - one for my dry goods which is in a closet next to the kitchen and then my can, bottles, jars are on my lower level. I watch for when things go on sale. I also have a freezer in the basement that I keep loaded with pizzas, dinners, soups, meats, and frozen breads/rolls. I go through all 3 storage areas twice a year to weed out stuff that might have expired or to move stuff to the front that is going to expire if I don't use it. One thing that I will be changing in my storage system will be making use of the plastic bins and I will be place a cup with a couple a sharpie markers in each area to label the products with expiration dates that I can readily see. One other thing that I've stocked up on is water. Living out in the country and being on my own well, if the power goes out for any length of time, having water is a must. I've gotten to the point that when I know we are in for some wicked storms that I go and fill the bath tub up with water. Not to drink but to use in the toilets. I also have a stock pile of paper plates, plastic silverwear, napkins, toilet paper, and paper towels. One other thing that I have added to my prepper pantry is dog/cat food, along with some extra bags of kitty liter. Can't forget our fur-family members.

Just a tip for all those large #10 cans of food. You can open them and can into jars to make them more portion controlled. I re-can lots of tomato sauce into pint sizes. I have a source for canning bottles that work wonders for all the bbq sauces I can get in #10 cans.

Hi Chelsea, good to see you again. I have been storing a lot. I will always have one item spare. I have 3 deep freezer, 1 in de house combined with a fridge and 2 in the shed on top of each other. A total of 11 drawers. I have 1 tall larder full of canning jar full of meat, vegetables , potatoes, soup, pickles, apple sauce and fruit. They are only half pint and pint jars as I am on my own. I al#o have #till some apple juice from windfall apples in quart jars. I still have a few pumpkins left and some onions. I also dried peppers, chillies, mushrooms, fruit and leeks. When I shop and I have a voucher that I need to spend more than usually I buy some extra stuff for the pantry. The only problem I have I were to leave it. Eveline in Scotland

Beans and rice are so versatile and delicious when cooked right. Can be bland and nasty if cooked wrong though. So it's a matter of experimenting with diff recipes until you find your favorites. My favorite is white rice cooked Puertorican style w oil and salt w red kidney beans same PR style "habichuelas guisadas" which means stewed beans, often with potatoes and olives. My grandma cooks a bean and rice soup (yes PR Style) where its just a "sofrito" mixture of minced onion, garlic and cilantro, tomato paste, garlic salt, 1/2 can kidney beans, 1/4 cup rice. So simple and delicious.

I recently learned the hard way that it is worthwhile to make sure your home is safe from toxins such as mold before investing too much in your prepper pantry. I have spent the last two years building a stock like yours. In large part, I did this because our family has a lot of allergies and other health issues and I wanted to be sure they would have safe food during emergencies. Unfortunately, we just found out that our health issues were caused by mold growing in our walls. We had to move out of our house and leave everything behind because it is contaminated. It is devastating. However, we have all begin to feel so much better in just a few weeks of being out of our home. My husband and daughter nearly lost their lives before we figured it out.

Have so many similar items in our pantry. One thing I would recommend, buying grains in bulk and having a grain grinder. The flours will go bad but whole grains can last indefinitely. Also, when a person grinds their own flour, he gets the whole grain with nothing removed. Also, I keep organic popcorn in the house and use it for corn flour as well.

I try to have several months of food on hand. For the past two (or 3, really) months I have been doing a pantry challenge and have been eating mostly from our pantry without purchasing anything other than dairy and produce. It has done two things for me. One, made me feel good about being able to go multiple months without grocery shopping. Two, is making me panic a little about using up so much of our stores. Lol! So I’m preparing to bulk back up and have a few orders in to arrive in early March.
Like you, having it on hand just in case gives me a sense of peace. My main issue is water. Our pump is hard wired in, so our generator cannot run the well pump if the electric goes out and we don’t have another source of water. Definitely something we will be fixing ASAP.

    • @LittleMountainRanch
      @LittleMountainRanch  4 года назад +1

Water is so huge. We're on a gravity fed spring here, but when we lived without that luxury it stressed me out.Could you get a hand pump to put on the well head if you really needed to. I guess, depending on how deep your well is you'd need a seriously long piece of hose!
I did a pantry challenge last year and I basically felt exactly as you do. I won't do it again, but I'm so glad I did to know I can if I need to.

I am new to living on well and septic, so far, the thought of power for the well pump, had not crossed my mind.... my kids drink from the five gallon water jugs, I go buy and haul in. Me, my older son, and parents.... the well is good, and we have filters, as well as a fridge water filter too, so I’m good..... lol women can use extra iron anyway! We do have a generator, but I don’t know if it could run the pump?... home is constructed like “ Fort Knox “, and the basement is deep and was poured with thick walls, such that the temp is the same no matter the season..... haha, but if the power is out, no well pump, or ejector pump for the full basement bathroom, or kitchenette..... need to look into all this for back up situations.... and piece of mind.... Haha, can run the small tractor, mowers, snowblower, and rototiller.... and the simple use of our generator at old house.... ( power there, failed constantly)... I’ve always got more to learn!

I don't feel like I'm in the target group of preparedness pantries. 27, single, shared appartement, low carb eater 🙈, living in Germany, at the moment in an area/city with next to no chance of natural disaster, and I weigh enough (too much) to fast for at least 7 days :D the only issue I have, is that my stash of meats, butter, cheese is all dependent on electricity. So if I would do anything for emergencies, it would be canning salmon, meat, buying shelf stable ghee/mayo. Maybe I'll do that and first learn how to do that when I'm back at my flat.
My parents, who I'm currently visiting, store shelf-stable milk, water (sparkling and non-sparkling) and if I remember correctly water for cooking in aluminium canisters from the army.
At least in our social circles it is next to unheard of to store extra food (unless it's an overflowing pantry with stuff you bought on a whim, but don't use 🙄). The whole prepper movement was, let's say, not very positively depicted in a few documentaries in the last two years (summarised to gun crazy dooms day forest people). But our government publishes an updated list every few years on what they recommend everyone should have stored in case of flooding (every few years in southern Germany), black outs and so on. It just isn't very widely known.
Sorry for the long read, the topic fascinates me, especially living in a densely populated country with very very high (perceived) food security.

Having a few extra things put aside doesn't hurt, but could really help if they are ever needed.
As for the negative prepper image, I get that. It can be a bit of an extreme movement, especially what's portrayed in the media (the media loves extremes), but I'd say most prepared people are more like me, kind of middle-of-the-road, homestead types. Although, I suppose to some what I do could look a bit extreme to some, I hope I show it in a balanced un-fear-mongering way.

@@LittleMountainRanch absolutely, your way of doing it is relatable to me! I love your videos, you're a delight to watch :) I want to have a food producing garden later in my life. So I gladly learn through your documentation of the process (especially since you have it way harder weather/climate-wise).
After seeing random prepper videos on RUclips, finding your channel was a breath of fresh air. I absolutely believe in the middleway or moderate prepping. Especially if you're single and only temporarily in a town where I don't have a security network of friends and family. My comment was self reflection not critisim :) most people would eat better, live more frugally (I'm doing my Master's at the moment, so stocking the sales is always a good idea) and generally benefit from being prepared and therefore somewhat living more intentional!
      Thanks for sharing :)

Little Mountain Ranch I would love the medical video. I’ve been trying to stock up on things but to be honest, I’m not sure what to get! I’ve got the basics - alcohol, peroxide, bandages, gauze and so on but I definitely don’t have your lancet kit!

My pantry is rather simple right now: several round boxes of oatmeal, 40 cans of tuna, 12 gallons of potatoes (in a hole in the ground), several gallons of sorghum molasses (home grown), flour and baking powder, and in the freezer (pantry) many bags of frozen blueberries, salmon and home grown grapes for juice, and several quarts of frozen skim milk. I think oatmeal and potatoes are delicious (Potatoes baked with olive oil.). I just finished off the 25 catfish I had frozen. Next year I will add homegrown kidney beans.

Hey just a tip, instead of storing brown sugar you could just store white and make sure you have molasses on hand. It’s super easy to make brown sugar when you need it and then you won’t be storing Hard sugar 😊

Thanks for this informative video. I have some stored food on hand and tons of toilet paper and distilled water gallons.! Now I am glad that I have this because our Costcos had a run on water and toilet paper i believe. They have been out for days. That is a scary thing when a place like Costco can run out of stuff. I do believe times are changing and we all need to be prepared for situations like the Coronavirus or something else. I think this is a big wake up call for most people who always think there will always be food at the grocery stores.

Peannut butter in rice and beans is so good and creamy! Thanks for the video and ideas. Half of our stock is in the freezer and we calculated this afternoon that we should be good for about 6 months or surviving for two persons. We also have grains but it is more for the beer production. My bf use a drill on the mill to chop the grains. Maybe I could use some type of grain to do micro-greens. Unpop pop-corn could be great too :)

Question..some people say to take things out of the plastic bags and reseal them in mylar or air tight jars. You said just put them in a food grade bucket, in the original package, and don't worry about it. I am so confused as to what to do! Thanks.

    • @LittleMountainRanch
      @LittleMountainRanch  4 года назад +1

If there’s one thing you’ll find on the internet about food storage it’s a million different ways to do it. I’m kind of a middle of the road, not super extreme kind of prepper. Also, because of the size of my family we go through stuff way faster than most so keeping it fresh forever isn’t needed in my pantry... so, I’d say, unless you’re looking to store for longer than a year or two I would worry about repacking everything. As long as it’s in a relatively airtight container you’re good to go.
