I have tons of mormon friends who do this as part of their church doctrine because of the year without a summer, so having a year's supply of food or needs is just good sense.

No it is this sort of attitude that is causing the problems. There is no food shortage or toilet roll shortage, there is a supply chain issue and its people en mass hoarding like this that is causing the issues. If everyone was sensible and took only what they need there would be enough to go round no problem.

TheHandofGod, don’t fret too much. You can still go to the grocery store and buy food right now. This family will never go through all of this food before it spoils. It’s too much. Even he admits some of his food was starting to spoil. You have to be careful with old canned food. It can give you botulism. Those oils will go rancid before he uses them. What a waste.

@@vtecbanger3180 Go get a 50-pound bag of rice and the same for dry beans if you can find it. Go to your local hardware store Lowes especially. Buy the white food-grade 5-gallon buckets with lids. (make sure it is the lids with the gasket on the bottom) Go online while you still can and buy 15-inch x 2 ft. mylar food grade bags as well as the appropriately sized oxygen absorbers. Quietly grab your wife's flat curling iron. place the mylar bag into the 5-gallon bucket pour enough rice into the mylar bag to fill 3/4 of the bucket throw in the oxygen absorber and push it about 3 inches under the surface. open the curling iron and place the last 2 inches of the mylar bag between the heating elements of the curling iron. Run that curling iron all the way over to the opposite side of the mylar bag stopping 3 inches from the end. turn on the shop vac place the suction end into that 3 inch opening as the mylar bag begins to shrink from the air leaving the bag and all of the air is sucked out once again continue to seal the mylar that remains open with the curling iron. leave the lid off of the bucket for 24 hours if you did it correctly that mylar bag will still look like a compressed brick. Then label the side of the bucket with the contents and the date with either a label maker or a sharpie and snap the lid on the bucket. congratulations you now have a 50-pound rice bucket that is good for 20 + years. The same thing can be done with dry beans, flour, pasta, occasionally remove the tops of your buckets to confirm the mylar seals once a year. mylar bags can be found on Amazon or eBay. Make sure you use the appropriately sized oxygen absorber otherwise your preps could be compromised and make sure your absorbers stay sealed at all times otherwise they will change colors indicating they have been exposed to the air around you and rendered useless. This method above allows you to have a lower reliance on can foods only. I hope I have explained this process adequately. ******But start today****** work everyday on your preps. Water especially.

I have been called a food hoarder. I went hungry as a child. I would read books like "Kim," by Rudyard Kipling, and dream of the loafs of bread that Kim would eat. I used to raid peoples gardens at night and eat from apple and cherry trees, during the summer months. My parents were children of the depression, and kept food locked away from me. My sisters and I would play a game where we would look at magazines for pictures of food and see who could grab at the page first. I spent my early adulthood gorging myself on foods I had never gotten my fill of as a child. I know what hunger is and I never want to experience that again.

I have some freeze dried food but its too expensive to buy for me now. so I always keep basics, flour, sugar, salt, oatmeal, instant potatoes, rice, powdered milk, ramen, all kinds of pasta and canned sauce. I can sustain myself for a while if there is something that keeps me from going to the store, like a disaster or something. anyway, you have prepped as much as you can and I think y ou can live off that food for quite some time as well as have something to give. great job!

Beautiful pantry, one advantage that you guys have in the US, is that the country is quite big and buying large plots of land for reasonable money is possible, you can even have your private forest, with many hectares, build your bunker, lagoon, whatever you wanna do you can do it in the US, and as far as I can see you slowly build your dream get away property
Here in Spain it is almost impossible to buy big plots, I'm telling you I don't know anyone owning more than 1000 square mts, that is literally nothing, this is mental in here, don't even mention if you want to build a bunker, maybe not possible at all, or just to build an extension of your house is the pain.
See you guys, be safe and do not get paranoic with the pandemia, we have it in Spain and we all are following the quaratine, no issues in the street, not robbery and so for, cheers.

Meat is pressure canned. The pressure and heat cooks and sterilizes the meat inside the jar. It's super tender, and good (if properly sealed: as the jar cools the air compresses, leaving a vacuum that holds the sterility) for years.
