First Rib Self Release Technique

  • Опубликовано: 14 авг 2024
  • Dr. Rowe shows shows an EASY first rib self release technique that can get pain relief in as little as 30 SECONDS.
This video is really going to focus on an elevated first rib. So if you're experiencing pain in the neck and top of the shoulder region, you may have strained the area around the first rib.
That’s when the soft tissues around the neck, shoulder, and upper ribs stiffen up, causing issues with range of motion, POP and CRACK sounds, instability, and pinching pain.
So we'll tackle this first rib pain with a self adjust (self mobilize) technique in the form of easy AT-HOME exercises and stretches.
Think of them as helping to RESET your first rib and helping the soft tissue around the neck and upper back move and glide more freely which (hopefully) leads to more range of motion, less popping and cracking, and just makes the it feel better overall.
Again, these stretches are really EASY to do and can be done at home or work.
So WATCH NOW and get that first rib feeling better with this self mobilization exercise!

so we are not directly pressing the first rib with the strap, right?
we are pressing and releasing the muscles that is pulling the rib (scalene, etc), am I right?

I had been struggling through some neck/shoulder/trap issue that was going down my arm and into my AC over the span of about 7 months.
A guy at the gym today mentioned the first rib, so I came home and found your video.
I used a loop of webbing for rock climbing.
After one round of your full routine I am 80% better.
    Amazing!

Thank you for your public service. I have been dealing with doctors, physical therapists, massage therapists for what has been termed to be a bulging disk and pinched nerve at the CT junction for three months now. This first rib mobilization exercise helped a lot as soon as I did it. It would appear that the first rib has been overlooked for its role in pinching nerves and blood vessels.

Avid cyclist clocking in ~180 miles per week both indoor/outdoor as season permits. About a year ago I started having left neck muscle spams to where my neck would basically "lock up". Started yoga & 1st rib mobilization exercises but still had trouble (and pain) turning my neck left. This strap technique is the best I've found so far. After one set I could turn my neck without pain. After about an hour the pain returns. I just pull the strap out again and repeat. Rome wasn't built in a day.

I am a Physical Therapist Assistant (I work in a SNF) and I have had numbness in my thumb, and 1-3 digits for about 4 years. I have seen a PT twice and concluded its not cervical and it’s not thoracic outlet. The 2nd PT did say she thought it was the elevated rib. She showed me how to do the 1st rib mobilization with a gait belt but I could never quite do it right. Thank you for mentioning the yoga strap. I am going to get one and try it again because the numbness is getting worse at night where I am waking up 2-3x with numb fingers. It can take 15-20 minutes for the numbness to go away. I have been miserable. Thank you for these!

    Hey Dr. Rowe!
I just wanted to drop in & comment so you know you helped another human! I have struggled my whole life with an elevated 1st rib (right side),. I used to work as a PT aide a long time ago & when I saw the gait belt , or "yoga belt," around your shoulder, I immediately remembered the techniques my co-worker (herself a DPT) taught me. I don't currently own a gait belt (but i ordered one), yet just doing these release techniques with pressure from my husband's hand and only 1-2 repetition along with the your video has already offered me noticeable symptom relief. YaaaY! ...Well, good luck with everything & I hope this crazy year/virus has not damaged your practice in any way.
Warm wishes & thank you again!

LMT here with a client who is a lifelong dancer with a fairly slender figure and her spare rib is out at the bottom on the right and it seems to poke her. The exercises mentioned help immediately, no popping or pain after the exercises but half an hour later the popping is back, I think my muscles are accustomed to the wrong positioning so they always fun** it up again.

Thanks for the sub! You can substitute a sheet or large towel for the strap, but you'll need something of that sort to be able to do this exercise.

Is this manoeuvre effective in treating Thoracic Outlet Syndrome due to an elevated first rib? If so, how many times a day do you need to do this exercise and for how long until you see results?

Not designed to treat thoracic outlet syndrome. This can be used as a daily exercise.

Thanks for replying sir. Do you mind explaining why it’s not suited for TOS? I thought TOS is caused by an elevated first rib. Do you know other exercises/treatments that get rid of TOS?

I bought a yoga strap just to pop the rib but it doesn't work. I have tried many things to no avail. It's been over 6 weeks

tip: connect two belts together. Perfect fit!

Actually I admit this is a terrible tip; you'll stretch your belts out. Even better: Ross/Marshalls has a lot of them for like $3
