We're Eamon and Bec, a Canadian couple who previously lived and traveled full-time in our self converted Sprinter Van!! When the pandemic hit in 2020 we made the difficult decision to abandon our van in Africa and fly home to Canada. Six weeks ago we flew back to Morocco to rescue our van and last week we left it again to come back for a medical procedure (more on that next episode). This week we're sharing what it's like to live in the Canadian wilderness during winter!

We've always envisioned moving into the woods by the lake and building our dream tiny cabin as a home base for us to come back to in between our international van life travels. While we are looking forward to returning to Morocco in the new year we are so so grateful to have this space to call home!

i feel unusually seen! my husband is military & was diagnosed with PTSD which makes sharing a bed difficult (and dangerous) for us. it is hard to accept we need to sleep separately despite not wanting too. thanks for normalizing that sometimes we are all better with a little space
We sleep separately too, I'm a really light sleeper and a much nicer person on a full night of sleep, so my husband is okay with it 😉

Sleeping seperate helps with the dream time. When always together it is hard to see who is influencing the dream time. So having time sleeping apart is good. When Eamon mentioned that he was sleeping up strairs what tweeked for me was, why? Is it to help your rest Bec? When you are touching cancer it is important that you pull back and reserve your energy for healing yourself.

Please do not use cruel mouse traps: “Sometimes, it only crushes the nose, a leg, or the soft underbelly of a mouse. If a snap trap connects with a part of the (animal)’s body, death will eventually follow. The dying process could take a very long time, and the animal will be in extreme pain throughout the ordeal”.
Instead, here is an example of a catch and release trap: Harris Catch and Release Humane Mouse Trap (2-Pack)-2EMT-LIVE - The Home Depot

Please, please try those ultrasonic rodent repellers! They plug in a regular outlet and we know people who use them in their cottages and have no mouse issues. The live traps are awful 😪
I agree 💯%. I was looking to see if somebody else made a comment about those mice traps. It's pure torture to them. Catch and release or something else where the poor animals don't suffer.
I was so focused on the sock only feet going down the wet cold stairs and snow that I was completely shocked with the cold plunge! Looks refreshing 😂

Oh yeah thats mouse poo. We always get them in the winter. Traps (that can catch them without killing ) and then drive them a few blocks from the house and release.

Hey there! Happy you two made it back safely to the cabin! For the mice: maybe you could try some humane traps? I know it doesn’t seem like it, but Old school snap ya neck clamps are a little cruel. Lots of humane options out there these days tho! Give it a google friends! 🐁 ❤️

My grandmother lived 1500 miles away. When we came to visit, she made.a pot of spaghetti that started out as fresh veggies from her garden. It is decades later and I am still craving a second plate of it. It was that good.

Love the cabin vibes! As for the mice, I highly recommend getting catch and release traps for the little critters. Those have always worked great for me and the little mouse gets to see another day :)

I'm watching your video again twice this morning lol. I also wonder if you could purchase ethical mice traps. The mice get caught in a trapped box and then you release them back into the wild. But you can drive further away to release them so they don't return to your lovely place ❤️❤️

There are non-lethal methods of catching mice. You don't have to kill them.
There are some good articles on the PETA website that explain how to catch and relocate mice without harming them.
Totally agree, I've caught them with humane traps and smiled when I set them free far away. That could have made a lovely video from Eamon. Just butchered them now. I don't get it with Eamon. Honey a couple of weeks ago and now this. If he's plant based then say so but the Vegan vibe is definitely off! I'm 5 years vegan. Glad you commented. Thank you.

I’m polish and growing up every Christmas me and my grandma alongside her mother would sit down at the kitchen table for HOURS hand rolling, stuffing, pinching pirogies.
It was a holiday tradition and childhood memory I hold so close to my heart. ❤️❤️❤️ thank you for sharing that small moment.

Favorite food that brings me back to childhood: My Grandma lived in Brooklyn and retired in Maine. My sister and I spent a July with her in Maine when I was 10. One day, she sent us out with a bucket to collect wild blueberries. We pick A LOT! After dinner she put them ALL in a pot on the stove and made warm blueberry syrup to put over vanilla ice cream. 🤤🍨

I totally get the whole feeling sleepy early! Here in Denmark this time of year the daylight hours are from 8:30 to 15:30 and most days it’s even grey and cloudy in that timespan. It definitely is hard, but then we get the beautiful long summer nights🌞 for the food that makes me think of my grandma; they are mostly traditional dishes, such as danish meatballs or I always have tea at my grandmas, so also tea☕️ 🫖

loved this weeks video! your videos always bring a smile to my face. as a canadian myself and living wayyy up north, we get about 4 or 5 hours of sunlight a day, even if that, which makes it incredibly hard to get up in the morning and feel productive throughout the day so i definitely relate :) i love your videos and can't wait to see what next week brings!

About 10 years ago, I was introduced to the concept of "all weather tires." They're not all season tires, and are actually winter rated, but intended to keep on all year. They are softer, so wear faster that keeping 2 sets of tires in circulation, but they're a really good option if your car doesn't see a lot of distance. I drive about 8-10k per year, and mostly in winter, anyway, when biking is less fun.
