The whole todoroki family situation is so well written, you understand the motivations of all the characters and their actions and what led them to this, it's my favorite plot in the series, even more than the main one

Yeah, this was called “The wrong way to put out a fire” for a reason. It’s honestly a perfect way of looking at what Endeavor did to Touya. Endeavor sparked the fire, and instead of giving it calm and gentle water or something to put it out, he basically poured gasoline and paint thinner on it, and then proceeded to ignore the fire and let it build, not realizing that he was not only the root of the problem but also the main one making it worse.
And by the time he did realize it, it’s all just too little too late.

Endeavor stopped Toya. Right after Toya attacks Shoto, the camera just shows Endeavor's forearm, where his sleeve is torn and has a few marks on it from Toya's fire

I think the mom feels responsible because after Toya said what he said to her, she backed off and let that shock scare her away from pushing back and stopping him.

Also, Toya did have a point. Rei WAS complicit and enabled Endeavor's actions of having children, and kind of sat there the whole time, which led to Toya viewing Rei and by extension, Fuyumi as weak and useless. Endeavor is the main source of the blame, but Rei also played a part in it too.

Eastern cultures, like Japanese as it relates about more to do with family and collectivist ideals. Western perspective is more individualistic with ideals. It's mainly Endeavor's fault, but collectively as family tied into it to feel some level of responsibility.

Endev kept having kids as a 2 birds 1 stone situation. Hoping to eventually get a child with the quirk combination he wanted so that kid could surpass All Might and that also that kid would hopefully break Toya's spirit, when he saw he had a replacement. The funny thing about Toya and Shoto is that...Toya is the prodigy in the family, not Shoto (as Endev even pointed out) Shoto has the better quirk though. Dabi's quirk isn't only linked to anger just strong emotion is general....him get excited/happy has the same effect. Dabi having greater firepower than Endev would equal a stronger hero in general, since Endev's technique flashfire is used to boost strength as well as speed. Greater speed would allow him to get to more areas and rescue more people etc. In combination with ice quirk (in a perfect world) to cooldown, the fatigue would be significantly less as well so more would be able to be done.
Personally I don't think the kids should be taking any real blame here. It's hard to imagine them not feeling some guilt (like survivor's guilt basically) but all the blame was really on the two adults that were in charge of the family at the time. Shoto did not save himself from the attack...Endev blocked it that's why the following scene you see him with the burnt sleeve. Mind you this isn't all of Toya's backstory, there is more...BJ basically foreshadowed it when he asked the question, how did he survive? (Personally the way this is answered and the aftermath is why I like the Todoroki storyline so much it's just so well written). Great reaction, next week episode should have a solid discussion portion too.
Oh yes Hawks did remove the cameras and trackers from the his wings....iirc you see him destroying the last of them while he was approaching Twice.

The reason why everyone takes fault with Toya and not just Endeavor is because Toya came to literally everyone of them, except for Shoto obviously, for help, and they all brushed him off and to Toya, abandoned him. They feel guilt because they KNOW FOR A FACT they could have done more, and the flashback called back to some of the times he came to his family members and they just pushed him off.

Honestly, when this stuff was happening in the manga, there were some really yikes takes. People saying that Touya didn't have it so bad because Endeavor never abused him. Like, news flash, neglect is a form of abuse. Not just neglect, emotional trauma. It felt like people were trying to shift all of the blame away from Endeavor and onto the victim, Touya. Because there are so many ways Endeavor could've handled this differently.
First, you should never try to live out your failures in life through your children. Side note, Endeavor seeking out Rei to create a powerful weapon is so yikes. It's not an act of love. It's an act of seeking power. Moving on though, once he found out Touya's quirk harmed his body when he went overboard, there are several things he could've done.
    A. Tell Touya that he'll love him regardless on if he can surpass All Might and that he loves him for who he is as a person and not his quirk
    B. Tell him that he can still be a great hero, just not the Number 1. And that he's fine with it because Touya tried his best
    C. Tell Touya that he can still be the Number One hero but only if he finds a way to stop or minimize the damage done to himself(like how the Nurse at UA told Izuku to find less self-destructive ways to use his power)
    D. Actually talk to Touya and stop expecting the problem to just go away, especially since he created it
If all of that fails and he still decides to have more children, there's always one final option(hypothetical if Endeavor had treated Touya somewhat better)
    E. Stop training Shoto and Touya separately. Some heroes become partners to cover each other's weaknesses. He could show them both love and have Shoto cool off Touya when he begins to overheat and have Touya go for more powerful fire blasts that Shoto can't do. Raise them as sibling heroes
But he didn't do that. He instead ignored most of his family. When he wasn't ignoring them, he was harshly training Shoto or yelling or hitting Rei. Touya saw that he was born and tossed aside for his father's ambition. He revealed that he'd been watching his family after he burned up too. And he likely saw that Endeavor didn't change even after his "death". Endeavor got worse. He was replaced in life. And his death didn't change anything. He probably questioned why he was born at all. Until there was nothing inside him but emptiness and hatred. This was the wrong way to put out a fire. And that's how Dabi was born.

Also you're too focused on him becoming a hero, actively finding out what else Toya is interested in and good at and nurturing a path for him would have been essential. Endeavor and the Todoroki family has been the best secondary storyline in MHA. Endeavor is easily one of the best characters in the series. His flaws make him the most compelling. Hawks and Endeavor stories really give this series a level of maturity rarely seen in most Shonen's. I can stand behind someone who feels remorse and regret for past actions. Wanting to become a better person. His growth over the last few seasons has been amazing to watch.

The thing is Endeavor didn't want Touya to get hurt but Endeavor himself didn't give up on his selfish dreams. Instead of making more kids, he should've given Touya more time, sat down and talked to him like how a real father should. Maybe even taken him to a psychiatrist or something. But, no. He didn't do that. Endeavor just pushed Touya to the side and kept on having more kids.

@@DoomLeigion8086 bro, it's you who doesn't have eyes and brains. Endeavor spending time with his kids? Then why Natsuo accused him of not spending time with them? Why does he say Endeavor thought of them as a failure and that's why he separated them from Shoto? Why Shoto hates him so god damn much? Why can't Fuyumi defend her dad whenever Natsuo or Shoto accuses him of anything he did in the past? Endeavor respects Rei? No respectable man hits his wife or mentally/emotionally abuses his kids. No man who respects his wife will force her to have kids even when she says they shouldn't do it (Natsuo and Shoto's birth happened out of Endeavor's choice, not Rei's, even though she's the one who gave birth to them). Rei wanted Touya to have more siblings, that's why they had Fuyumi. Natsuo and Shoto were born when they found out that Touya was a failure; it wasn't because Rei wanted more kids and wanted Touya to have more siblings besides Fuyumi. Did he talk to Touya? Yeah, all he did was scold or yell at him and kept telling Rei that all he could show his son the world of heroes; like he never tried being an actual father to Touya or any of his kids. Real good fathers would spend time with their kids and help them out with their problems; they don't stay busy with their work all day long and scold their kids whenever they return home and this is what Endeavor did (and don't give that excuse that he's a pro-hero and stuff; that excuse is too lame and overrated). He was never a good father to them. Maybe he did care about Touya to some extent but he was selfish and power-hungry and overlooked all the red flags; how is he a good father if he prioritizes his ambitions first and doesn't care about his kids well-being and mental health? Also, he abused them either physically, mentally, or emotionally. And it's not that easy for the abused ones to forgive their abusers as if nothing happened. Use your goddamn brains to understand that. Also, I never said Endeavor forced Rei to marry him. Where did you get that sh*t from? Unlike me, if you really have eyes, read my comments properly again.
You Endeavor defenders are so f*cking weird, it's disgusting.
Also, I'm not being sexist here. And I don't need to be f*cking woke to understand and judge Endeavor. You Americans love being woke and you go be a woke person; I don't f*cking care. I'm not a Westerner and I don't want to be a f*cking woke like you all. All I need is common sense and moral values to judge Endeavor.

Enji was both trying to surpass All Might and stop Toya from harming himself using his flames, he had to complete his goal in order to stop Toya. Natsu was a failure, he was far weaker than Toya and did nothing to quell the burning desire within Toya. And Toya knew why he couldn't train, the entire family knew why he couldn't train...but Toya was foolish as his father also, he claimed that he knew what his body could handle and was willing to continue burning himself in order to achieve the goal of surpassing All Might.
Toya got his misogyny towards the women in his family from his father. His sister was a failure, his mom had been sold off and was only birthing failures in the eyes of Toya and Enji...so to Toya, neither of the women in his family were serving the purpose they were there for.

In regards to Toya and his views on women. I think the point folks are missing is that Toya learned his behavior from his father. Endeavor not only abused his wife, but essentially saw her as a breeder to obtain his ideal quirk child. When you have that kind of toxic masculine figure around its no wonder he has shitty views on women at such a young age.

    • @magortom
      @magortom Год назад +3

I think there's also the aspect of reading too much into it since he's a child in public school beginning to socialize. When kids say "no girls/boys allowed" in their treehouse for instance, it isn't misogyny or misandry really, its just "boys are stupid"/"girls are complicated" stereotypes kids use to "understand" their differences and emulate a little bit of the (problematic)culture around them. Dabi doesn't openly voice sexism at Toga or other females, so I think it's more family resentment than overarching views on women.

@@magortom Yes and from that idea, Fuyumi happened. But when Touya failed and Endeavor wanted more kids, Rei clearly said that they shouldn't have more kids cause it'll be cruel to Touya as he already knew the reason of his own birth at that point. So Natsuo and Shoto's birth happened against her will while Fuyumi was born because Rei personally wanted it. There's a difference.

How I feel about it is, everyone not endeavor in that house was either abused or neglected so they had very few tools to deal with a member of the family spiraling. I don't think they deserve any blame in the Touya situation. The only person not Endeavour that deserves any blame is Rei for pouring that water on Shoto and that's a completely separate issue.
My interpretation is that by claiming responsibility, they're also taking an active part in somehow "saving" Touya. After all, they might be able to help in a way they couldn't if they distanced themselves from it and left it up to Endeavour and/or Shoto to capture him. I see this more as them taking their agency back rather than exculpating Endeavour. What he does from now on is what determines if he will be redeemed. Personally I don't know what I need to see to consider him redeemable but I know I haven't seen it yet.

If I talk about my personal life, I come from a healthy, happy household and my dad is a very loving, caring, and respectful father and husband, so seeing Endeavor like this made me feel really disgusted, truly. Also the anime still needs to animate the 2nd part of Touya's backstory, like how he survived and who rescued him. And let me tell you...
