I think the problem isn't that Endeavor didn't care about Touya (if he didn't, he would've just let Touya keep trying to be a hero and simply ignored his efforts), it was that he was but he did the absolute worst way of showing it because ultimately he never understood or took the time to understand Touya. In his mind, I absolutely believe that Endeavor didn't want Touya to constantly chase after an unattainable dream only to be met with disappointment like he did, and that he thought he was sparing Touya further pain by telling him to give up.
The problem with that though is that Endeavor only ever expressed approval or acknowledgement towards his children if he thought they could surpass All Might because even though a part of him does care about their wellbeing, their primary function in his eyes is to help him surpass All Might. So obviously, Touya can't give up on becoming a Hero if he ever wants to gain his father's approval.
Honestly, it sounds messed up, but it probably would've been better for Touya if Endeavor had never showed him kindness or approval in the first place because then he wouldn't have had false hope. At least then, he wouldn't have had this obsession over something he was clearly never going to attain, at least from his father. (which sounds real familiar, huh, Endeavor...)

Endeavour needed parenting class and therapy from the start lmao. Even if he wants a designer baby, morale helps a lot in maintaining a somewhat happy family even if his initial aim wasn't for love.

@@zebimicio5204 It's generational trauma. Because Endeavor created the family with rotten, corrupt foundations, he inflicted Touya with the exact same trauma/obsession he had. There was no way he could have prevented Touya's spiral without addressing his own obsession first.
So yeah. Endeavor needed therapy, and badly, before he even thought about starting a family.

Something that I always like to bring up is how fitting the title of “The wrong way to put out a fire” is. It’s honestly a perfect way of looking at what Endeavor did to Touya. Endeavor sparked and fueled the fire, and instead of giving it calm and gentle water or something to put it out, he basically poured gasoline and paint thinner on it, and then proceeded to ignore the fire and let it build, not realizing that he was not only the root of the problem but also the primary one making it all worse.
And by the time he did realize that, it was all just too little too late.

The thing is Toya also did want to be a hero. Everychild in MHA wants to be a hero. They're the glue holding society together. You cant just tell a child "you have the potential to surpass me, as the #2 hero, and the #1 hero, too." And then expect them to just give up because it turns out their body can't tolerate their own quirk.
"I can take the pain, it's fine!" A child, even a late middle/ high schooler doesnt have the ability to fully process the long term damage They're doing, the way deku almost destroyed his arms. You can scream at them "NO!" all you want, they're still going to be stubborn about it. You need to go deeper in communicating with them.
At the start of the ep you either misread or misrepeat Rei's line: "You're not the only one who saw that child." Thats not the line, it's "You're not the only who didn't see that child." She's not talking about how she also saw Dabi's speechand knew she had to do something. She's talking about how Endeavor isn't the only one who completely failed as a parent. The first and only time she's really shown asking Toya about what he really wants is right before he storms off to the mountain for the last time, and he's well into puberty at this point. He's not a 4, 5 year old child learning about his quirk and that it has recoil damage. He's a broken 12, 13, maybe 14 year old boy who gave up a long time ago on his neglectful parents, trying to process his emotions the only way he knows how

The Entire todoroki family situation is probably one of the best aspects of my hero. Sort of a family who is completely broken at it core, from a father who took his ambition too far and messed up when trying to protect Toya, mother and doesn’t know what to do so much their mind broke, a daughter who just wants to be OK, a brother who can’t forgive, the youngest, who still trying to figure out.
This entire episode was hard to watch , Expressions were especially on and horrifying in this episode. It’s one thing to show how messed up a situation is, but also another thing to improve it. Nothing endeavor will do. Will excuse anything he’s done, and yet he still wants to improve and do better. He’s come so far as a character and it’s remarkable to see how far he come. Because of the effort that he’s done to improve, his family recognizes that he is, and he’s at his lowest, and doesn’t know what to do, his family pays that effort, and dose his best to help in. it’s a powerfully written segment of this entire show and I love it.

Endeavor defenders are wild dude. I've seen some truly nutty takes, from people saying that Toya was born evil, to "Endeavor did nothing wrong." He gave Toya brain worms, literally had more kids to replace Toya, and instead of listening to Toya, Endeavor only heard, "I'm not going to stop hurting myself," and Endeavor proceeded to take his anger out on Rei, instead of listening to her as she was repeatedly asking for parental help, because she can't do all of that herself. Especially managing a defiant Toya.
Some people looked at this episode and got the wrong lesson. They saw it and thought that it partially absolved Endeavor of guilt, because they thought he made a passable effort in trying to prevent Toya from ultimately spiraling, but that's really not the case. He ignored everyone he needed to actually listen to, refused to actually help in the way he needed to be involved, and when Toya "died," he demonstrated that he learned nothing from his mistake, because he proceeded to put Shoto through the same torment. The only difference is that Shoto was able the pain and existential crisis. Endeavor hadn't even accepted that he was wrong until All Might suddenly retired and Endeavor decided that the ends of surpassing All Might with a child no longer justified the means of destroying his family.

We see Toya hasn’t gotten anymore white hair before he’s complaining about not training anymore and Endeavor went to the doctor to find out what was going on.

IMHO these flashbacks do a LOT to humanize Endeavor's behavior back in the day.
Many of the acts that previously seemed just heartless and cruel are now cast in a different light- the panicked responses of a man that can clearly see the direction where things are going but who's every attempt at changing it has failed and is now grasping at straws in hopes that something sticks even though deep down he knows it won't.
Rei's mental breakdown is also now easier to understand- she was shouldering a far greater sense of guilt than we previously knew.
They were parents driven past the point of breaking by their inability to dissuade their child from the self destructive path they had set him on. Over the course of years they watched their own family like a slow-motion trainwreck hurtling towards a cliff and everything they tried to change its course only made things worse and it drove them insane, each in his own way.

All of this is why Endeavor is one of my favorite characters - the way he's written, we see him in both a negative and positive light, and neither are the complete picture. So often characters are exclusively written as good or evil, and even with redeemed characters, their sins are often left in the past and not usually brought up again. But with Endeavor, you can never truly forget what he's done, because it resulted in arguably two of the most beloved characters in the fandom, Shoto and Dabi. (As well as Hawks, albeit indirectly) Not only that, but actively showing his regret and efforts to atone gives him so much more depth - he will never be able to completely fix what he's broken, and his sins will follow him for the rest of his life; some fans have argued whether or not he should die in the end, but personally I think having him survive would be more fitting. His failures as a father and a person are now the foundation of whoever Enji Todoroki becomes next - whether hero or civilian - and it'll make him work hard to be better than who he was before. Whether you like or hate Endeavor as a character, both opinions are valid, because that's how complex his character is.

I love getting differing perspectives on the same thing here. I was looking forward to this reaction especially, as it casts new light on the situation we already knew, and we got different things from it. Myself, I suddenly saw that Endeavor was trying - he really was - but he was doing everything wrong. He didn't mean to do it wrong, but he did, with each new mistake compounding those that came before. Like when he separated Shoto from the others, he wasn't doing it to try and elevate Shoto over the rest, he was trying to keep him safe from Toya. When he distanced himself from Toya and left him to his mother, he might have been running away a bit, but he was also trying to not rub his high status as a hero in Toya's face, and perhaps trusting that a mother's love would show Toya that there was more to life than hero work. When he raged against his wife, he did so because, in his eyes, he had trusted her and she had failed to protect their son. Again and again, he tried to do right, but made the worst decisions possible. That's why he's able to be redeemed now, because where his choices had all been terrible, and his reactions had been all wrong, he had never meant to do evil. He'd meant to do good.

I say this every time but "The Wrong Way to Put Out a Fire" is still one of the best titles of anything I've seen.
One thing that's interesting is that in Endeavor's narration, he says Rei "could have said no" to the marriage. But Toya says his mom _didn't_ have a choice. I can't tell if that was supposed to be sarcasm, since he does still say she's complicit, or if he thinks she's complicit despite not having a choice.
I agree with you: I don't understand the people who think this episode makes Endeavor look better or that it shows it's Toya's own fault.

I think what is so polarizing to many people about Endeavor is that his redemption story is wholly unique. In fiction we hear redemption arcs for characters like Rambo, committing war atrocities, etc, but it's very rare to see a redemption story revolving around a character who actively betrayed their loved ones.
We're used to seeing betrayers and antagonists in general receiving some kind of karmic if not ironic justice and for many this kind of deeply internal character is difficult to empathize with.
To put it one way, let's say I offered you a million dollars to press a button that will kill a thousand random people. Now let's say I offered you a million dollars per minute to brutally torture the person you love most. Whether you accept either offer is irrelevant. Which one made your stomach turn more?
We are all collectively willing to accept impersonal atrocities over personal pain. All of this makes Endeavor and those who discuss him equally fascinating to analyze.

The thing with Endeavor and Touya, is that they were too similar. The words Endeavor had to tell his son, and he maybe did, were words he didn't believe in. And Touya knew. He couldn't stop his son without changing himself first but he either couldn't, didn't want to or wasn't even able to figure it out.
As a result, Endeavor decided to run away, from Touya, his responsibilities as a parent and as member of the family. Instead he put Rei in charge while he escaped to his job. Now he could put all the blame in Rei when thing didn't go right

Best way to describe this episode: Even the therapist (Alicia) is going to need therapy after this session/episode.
I like her take on the family and acknowledges that this was a result of Endeavors actions. His children suffered, his wife suffered, and it the end others suffered as well the ones that Dabi/Toya killed. These actions have a trickle down effect that affected more than the family. But the family itself will take time, and I mean a long time before they can move on. Not completely but enough to move forward.

The saddest part about this episode for me is how Natsu, Fuyumi, and Rei all blame themselves when they really have no reason to. It’s realistic for the victims to blame themselves and it hits super close to home.
This episode also shows exactly how depraved Enji was as a husband and father. I’ve seen people say that this “recontextualizes” his behavior, but it’s more so that it shows how he got to the point of becoming such a horrible person. While he did care for his family on some level, he ultimately had a horrible way of showing it, and he cared about his ambitions and goals more.

I don't think that was the author's intentions, given that this is extremely similar to Shigurakis family. Both had the father figure/the strongest person mentally scar a young boy, while everyone either pretends that nothing is happening or is too scared to stop it, and ends with the boy self-destructing and taking out everything around him. In both instances, the moral that they say is that someone should've stepped in to either stop it or help them, even though it's not their fault.

    • @user-gw3bs2in5i

@@johnark4723 I agree to an extent, but it’s also worth noting that even though Shigaraki’s family did step in, he still self-destructed. It’s also worth noting that Rei stepped in on a few occasions, just not to the same extent.
It’s also not a very good equivalence since Shigaraki’s family mostly consisted of adults, while the Todoroki family only had one adult to step in.
I think it’s this point where the author’s intentions with the Todoroki family storyline become more muddled, and it becomes more about the family itself rather than the morals and themes that surround it. But that becomes more apparent after this episode.

Endeavor is such an interesting character. You rarely see depictions of people like him. Just a very real, flawed person. Outwardly, he is a force of good and his endeavor(lol) to surpass All might is fair and just, escpecially comsidering that all of society pretty much fell apart when All might was sidelined. Internally, hes a mess. An awkward workaholic who cant really bring himself to show love and caring because he legitimately doesnt know how. His obsession transforms from noble to barbaric as he pushes aside his responsibility for his other children on to the mother because he doesnt know how to fix the problem he refuses to believe he started.

One of the things I like to think about Endeavor is that he acts like the type of person who has always gotten what he wanted, and has the drive and passion to make sure he always does. Unfortunately, he lacks the interpersonal problem-solving skills keep making that happen, probably because he was always able to use force, intimidation, and status to get what he wanted. When it comes to having a family, those just aren't effective tools. It doesn't excuse his behaviour, but it puts it into context.

Before you read this message if you do, know that I love your videos and that we agree that Shoto is the best character, a baby angel. Don't take what I say wrong, thank you :)
If you don't see it watch it again for years endevor tried to stop toya to train, because endevor is a hero and all he can train for is, to be a hero, but he don't want toya to burn himself. So after, he tried to say to toya that there is so many thinks instead been a hero. He is the number 2 hero he can't be home many time, he's like one of the most importante man in Japan.
You say that as a parent he should have done more, but we have already seen with Shigaraki's grandmother that heroes sometimes choose their work over their families. When she abandoned her son and disowned him and he turned bad as a father, you said ohh poor thing and for him to fu** you. And there you say fu** off to endervor and poor toya poor mom but as a mother she didn't do the right thing. She says it herself, she's at home all the time but she doesn't do anything.
Endevor is the country's number 2 hero, so obviously very much in demand everywhere, it's not fair what you criticize, because you don't criticize fairly but with your point of view. You say fu** you for "toya's death" but he spent years constantly telling her that it was too dangerous to train, years telling him. At THIS level he couldn't do anything. If as a parent you spend your time saying "don't do that, it's dangerous, don't do that, don't do that" the kid does it anyway, it's not the parents' fault.
I'll end up coming back to the moment where you talk about deku and what he did for shoto during the s2 tournament. Objectively, Deku acted like a selfish asshole at this moment, especially when he said "everyone is giving it their all and you want to win with half your power, stop making fun of us" the one who owed the least on earth saying that to Shoto is precisely deku. Shoto explained the situation to Deku, he talks to him about his sad childhood and his traumas, why he wants to become number 1 only with his mother's power: to deny his father because of what he did to this family particularly to avenge his mother somewhere. And basically Deku said, I don't give a damn about your traumas and what you've been through since you were born. It doesn't matter if you deny your father, use your fire and fight. Deku and precisely the only one who had no right to tell him that, he told him that even though with just Shoto's ice cream, Deku lost the fight. But even Bakugo at the time wouldn't have dared to throw his traumas back in his face like Deku did, Deku really didn't act like a hero at that moment but like an asshole.

Endeavor is a very well written character, and an extremely competent hero. He is also a MASSIVE piece of shit for what he did. I love the fact that Horikoshi doesn't write his arc as a redemption arc but rather an atonement arc. It's a subtle distinction but it makes all the difference that Endeavor is looking to make their lives better now, rather than seeking selfish forgiveness. Edit: It's also interesting to me, now that I think about it, that the family are all showing the different unhealthy ways that people can deal with grief, loss, and trauma. The sister (fuyumi?) wants everyone to just move on like nothing happened so they can be a happy family. Natsu represents dealing with trauma in a self-destructive way, he's holding onto his anger for endeavor and letting it consume him from the inside. Rei, up until this point was just completely shut down as far as we have seen. Dabi, is outwardly destructive in addition to being self-destructive, he's obsessed with the perfect revenge. Shoto is probably the least unhealthy perspective out of the bunch. He still hasn't forgiven Endeavor, but he's not willing to let that trauma define him, in part thanks to Deku. He is even accepting Endeavor's efforts to help in the healing process.

She really wasn't though. She did disagree with the marriage, but her family forced her into it due to Enji's influence. And the reason why she couldn't form any good strong connection with Toya is because she had three other kids that weren't properly being taken care of by Enji either. The odds have always been stacked against her. That's not to say she she a good job or that she was a great mother, she clearly wasn't ready for it, but she wasn't complicit in any of the mistreatment that happened.

    • @Murkglow
      @Murkglow 4 месяца назад +3

Saying "You can disagree" when you don't actually have the influence or ability to do so isn't a choice. How could she say no? Her parents who have ownership of her, who have near total control of her life in every legal and practical sense, have set this up and are essentially telling her this is happening. She has no money or property other than what they give her. She has no influence herself. You mean to tell me, she can say "No." and there will be no repercussions? That they'll just go "Oh, well I guess that's it then." Heck no. What was she supposed to go to the police or the papers (this frankly unknown nobody of a person) and tried to slander the #2 hero? How? Who would listen? What would they do even if they did? Arranged marriages aren't illegal in this culture. At best some people will scowl, say "That's distasteful" and then send her on her way with a "Sorry, I can't help." At worst, they'll tell her that it's her parent's and Enji's right to decide for her and to stop making a scene. She had no choice. She was sold as a broodmare to a man and had to warp her mind into accepting that fact. Had to find some way to live a life in spite of it.
As for Toya, when was she supposed to help him? She begs Enji not to be so hard on Shoto and gets beat for it. I very much doubt that was the first time (it certainly wasn't the first time he hit her as we can see in this episode). She does talk to Toya, she tries to get him to ask if being a Hero was even something he himself wanted, that he has other options, and yet Toya fights back. He doesn't want to hear it. He doesn't want to see that he really is a "failure" so he lashes out at her, shoving her own horrific situation back on her. She doesn't have power in her own life to make her own decisions (and that is not her fault), and Toya see this. He knows she is nothing, that Enji has the power, and so why should he listen to her words? Why should he respect her? He doesn't and she can do nothing about that.

Overly-long comment time! To get a good idea of how bad of a parent Endeavor was, I will list off every single bad thing he did.
Eugenics) He selected Rei because she had a quirk that could counter his own. He started a life with her for his own gain and basically enabled her family to pressure her into consenting. And her suggesting to have Fuyumi changes none of that since it was the entire reason this family was started, and he still ultimately forced her to have Shoto and Natsuo. She said no, and he still pushed.
Manipulation of Rei’s emotions) When she objected to having more kids after Fuyumi because it would be cruel to Toya, but he attempted to spin that to make it sound like having more kids would help Toya, and he knew full well that it wouldn’t work. He was just going through with his plan to find a successor. And even if he did believe that it would genuinely help Toya, that’s just willful ignorance on his part since everyone was telling him it was a bad idea.
Physical abuse of Rei) This one should go without saying, but some people are hilariously dumb enough to say that he never hit her. In season 2, you hear him say for her to “get out of his way,” and then a smacking sound, followed by her making a pained sound. In this episode, there’s a smacking sound from him, followed by her falling to the ground in pain. Shoto then tries to defend her. He clearly physically abused her.
Mental abuse of Rei) Another thing that should go without saying, but again, some people are dumb. When people say that it wasn’t Endeavor’s fault that Rei burnt Shoto, they’re actually completely wrong. The entire reason why that happened is because he tormented her to the point that she genuinely couldn’t think straight and had trouble telling him from her kids. That’s someone having a mental breakdown due to constant abuse. Also, to everyone who says that Endeavor was at his breaking point here because of Toya’s “death,” that’s not true. It’s been said on multiple occasions and confirmed by the author himself that Rei was hospitalized AFTER Toya’s “death.”
Grooming) Despite what some people say, Endeavor’s treatment of Toya before he stopped training him was basically grooming. Grooming, by definition, contrary to popular belief, is NOT always s*xual. If a parent raises their child for the sole purpose of following in their footsteps, that’s grooming. He didn’t treat him like a son, Toya’s only bond with Endeavor was training. And no, it doesn’t change anything when we say that Toya “wanted to train.” Of course he wanted to, it was literally the only thing he was raised to do.
Child neglect) When Endeavor realized that Toya wasn’t fit to be his successor, he basically abandoned Toya. As mentioned before, their only bond was that of training, so when Endeavor stopped training him, he basically stopped spending time with him altogether. Their only interactions after this were Endeavor telling Toya to stop and do other things. But he offered no guidance or mental help, so it hardly counts as parenting at all. So Toya, a mentally unstable child with no provided coping mechanisms, lashed out in the only way he was taught how. And instead of getting a therapist or at least spending a little more time with his son, Endeavor did nothing to help Toya. And to end it off, he knew Toya was going to the mountain the day he “died,” and decided not to go to him. Child neglect at its finest.
More child neglect) The only parental care given to Natsuo and Fuyumi was from Rei. Fuyumi was at most an attempt to help Toya and Natsuo was just another attempt at a successor. If they had impressive quirks like Shoto or Toya, Endeavor probably would have actually spent time with them, not that it would have made things better, but it’s neglect nonetheless.
Mental trauma) Endeavor beat Rei in front of Shoto and it’s shown that Natsuo and Fuyumi were well aware of it too, as there’s a moment of them cowering, trying to block out the noise. Natsuo also says that he remembers his treatment of Shoto and Rei.
Physical child abuse) It’s shown that Endeavor forced Shoto to train at age 5 to the point of him throwing up. And in the manga, it’s heavily implied that he hit Shoto with the flaming leg of a table (If him standing above a hurt Shoto with said table leg is anything to go by).
Actively covering all of this up) Granted, a fair amount of this is due to public ignorance, but it’s worth noting that Endeavor made some attempt to keep the public in the dark since his sidekicks are completely unaware of his home life.
This is all not as detailed as I would have liked it to be, but I don’t really like making super long comments. But this one was necessary to make. Bottom line is that it’s fine if you like Endeavor. But anyone who likes to say that he “wasn’t that bad” or “he wasn’t abusive,” please watch the show.

it's not that they showed the same hit twice, that's two different times endeavor has hit her. Once was during the time he was training Shoto during the second season after he hit Shoto in the stomach training him and then told Shoto's mother to be quiet or stay out of it and we clearly hear a slapping sound along with his mother hitting the ground, and then this time when he hit her because she didn't stop Toya.

Classic _Sunk Cost Fallacy._ Endeavor reasoned that if he gave up before succeeding, then it _retroactively_ makes all costs up to that point wastes for no purpose. And only by ultimately succeeding can he justify and "make back" the value of everything put into the "endeavor" (eh, see what he did there?). It's like a gambler thinking he *has* to keep gambling because, if he doesn't make it to the Jackpot, how is he going to win back all the money he already "sunk" into it (that's the "sunk cost"). The Fallacy is in reasoning that *any* additional cost (creating _more_ sunk cost) is validated in the pursuit of the ultimate payout, in order to validate *all* the sunk costs.
It never occurs to someone operating under this mentality that they might *still* end up at a net loss if they spend more getting to the Jackpot than the Jackpot can cover. It makes no sense to spend $3 million to win $500k, but when you're at $1k, you might think, "if i stop now, then I've wasted $1k for nothing. If I spend a _little more,_ then I can just take those costs out of the $3 mil. Ok, yeah, if you go up to $2k or even 20k, great. But those are *still* losses. They don't _stop_ being losses just because you had a net profit from the operation. It means that from a _max_ $3 mil, you might walk away with $2.9 mil, or $2.09 mil, or maybe $0.9 mil or even less. Maybe even less than $0. You can't retroactively say that it was a success or failure _right from the beginning_ based on the final outcome. And that, fundamentally, is the reasoning error that kept Endeavor locked into that path. If (and _only_ if) don't succeed, then I drove my family to hate me, traumatized them, and my son to kill himself, but he survived and became a psycho killer to spite me and it was pointless right from the start. *But!* If (and only if) I succeed, then the resulting Hero, even _Greater_ than All Might, will be _such_ a fantastic force for Good in the world, that the cost _one_ family had to pay to create them is retroactively justified; they'll save _far more families,_ all for the mere bargain cost of _one_ shattered one.
But *this* is the true cost he never anticipated; could any hero he ended up creating, even if he _had_ stayed on the same path, and if, say, Shoto *had* become the Übermench Hero he envisioned, make up for the "cost" of creating Dabi in the process?

It's interesting that the majority of heroes don't have any kids of their own (that I know of). Only ones I can think of are Endeavor, Nana, and Kota's parents. The parents we have seen otherwise seem to be just normal civilians (like Uraraka's and Jiro's).
But my memory isn't the greatest, so there could be others.

Well the current hero society ain't especially old, so it ain't surprising that few heroes would have openly known family members. We have to remember that All for one was only just presumably defeated six years prior to the start of the manga/anime, which was a very "dark time" according to All might. I wouldn't be surprised that most heroes acted similar to how Nana did aka. distanced themselves from family and even friends(unless they were heroes) just to protect them. Most heroes also didn't really try to make designer babies like Endeavor. I presume that the "Nana way" would be the more common practice for heroes, instead of the "Kota way" considering the dangers involved.

There's this aspect of the Todoroki family from a Japanese perspective that since Toya was the first born he was the heir to basically everything. But Endeavour basically gave that position to his 4th born something that is a pretty big deal in that kinda culture.

  • @MidnightLucario1

Endeavor always cared about Touya, about his kids, even if they were attempted designer babies. Remember he was even willing to settle entrusting Touya to his dream, but then he learned of the downside of his power so he to keep him from hurting himself, he told him to stop. But as you pointed out, by that point the fire was already lit, Touya understood what he was made for and he doesn't want give up what he feels is his purpose for existing, so he kept at it despite their pleas for him to stop. So if they couldn't talk him out of it, Endeavor thought of discouraging him out of it by making more kids till they got the one he actually wanted. But instead of discouraging Touya, it only made things worse and now Touya was a danger to his own brother. And with him seeing now that he's the main problem and could makes things worse, Endeavor decided to separate himself and Shoto from the other. Not just to protect Shoto from his siblings in case they ever felt the same as Touya, but also fearing so much as seeing him would stoke their flames. But Shoto's scar is proof that didn't help either as he started becoming abusive toward Rei out of frustration to get this one thing done right. He was desperate for Shoto to be his right decision, otherwise the pain he caused Touya wouldd be for nothing. Again, Endeavor genuinely cared for his family, but due to how things started out, he handled it in the worst way possible

He didn't try actually helping his children and left raising them entirely to Rei, while physically and mentally abusing her to the point that she had a mental breakdown. The positive take away in all of this is that he has been working hard to atone for his past.

First and forth most: I don't defend endeavor and what he did.
That being said, I want to remark that this show does an amazing job showing small pieces of endeavor story:
    1. First they show us endeavor like someone strong and capable of doing anything, almost like all might (in his job)
    2. Through shoto, they show us another endeavor's face: how abusive he is/was and everything he did with shoto and his mom.
    3. Then, after all might retirement, they show us that his attitude always was like a shield for his emotions, we saw endeavor doubt for the first time on screen, and they even show us that he really cares for shoto's mom, going to the hospital every day to see how she's going without her seeing him in order to not hurt her even more.
    4. Then they showed us his redemption arc (kind of), trying to get in touch with his family and, even more important, giving them the freedom to not be there with him. He never forced Natsu nor shoto to be with him, and when Natsu said bad things in his face, he said "yeah, you are right, I just want to be with my family now but I don't deserve it. If you want to spend time with me, that would be amazing. But if that's not the case, I understand"
    5. When dabi turns out to be the dead brother (almost everyone seeing this thought that), he breaks and can't move because (to him) he is seeing a ghost. He can't be alive that dabi, a maniac who has killed a lot of people, turns out to be his son. This episode shows a little of how he tried to stop Toya from using his quirk, which was damaging him. He could have done more or did it better, but at least he tried.
Again. I'm not defending him, but it looks like from the beginning we read endeavor character wrong: he wasn't a strong stubborn guy obsessed with surpass all might, he was a guy who HAD to surpass all might in order to give everything he did and sacrifice, a meaning. In the 3 season, when he saw all might skinny, he yelled about that look. We all thought that it was because he looked weak, but it's more like "you can't be like that, after everything I sacrificed in order to surpass you".
Also, there is no real answer about Toya's behavior: if you say no to him, we get a dabi, but if you go too soft and let him get practicing, we get a potential dabi and he may die and kill more people at that age. It's like, at that point, there is no right answer. The only thing I could imagine that would help Toya is to put him in a mental clinic, and that ain't going to work when the kid already feels abandoned...
Also also, while we saw before that endeavor hit shoto's mom, we got it wrong when she burned shoto's face. He said "I put her in a hospital" and we thought he beat her so badly that he had to send an ambulance, but he meant a mental hospital. And it was the right thing to do, rei (shoto's mom) never showed anything like that, she needed the help and the break from that family.
Also also also, major balls from her to, with that frail body, stand up against endeavor more than once.
And about that comment about "after all that, he was like that with shoto" or something like that, I guess it's that mentality about "get through with effort, you just need to be strong to get what you want" that I low-key hate. Quoting my favorite BlazBlue character, Makoto Nanaya, in BlazBlue continuum shift: everyone talks about the strength to keep chasing what you want, no matter the cost, but no one says nothing about wanting something and letting it go, either for its or your own good.

      because we see endeavor's past.
      so, minor manga spoilers:
endeavor's dad died in a building collapse and no mention is made of a mother or siblings. he's been alone for a long time, and the core thought of endeavor's mind is "i must make my life have meaning".
to that end, he decided the only way he'll have meaning is if he's the best. that toxic mindset, which he didn't have any parents to correct, then festered and grew into him buying rei and becoming obsessed with all might.

I feel like it's really hard to blame Rei for what happened. She may or may not feel that she should have done more, but consider that her family was reliant on Endeavor, Endeavor had the prestige and power of being the Number 2 hero, and she was being mentally, emotionally, and physically abused on the regular once Toya's diagnosis came back.
Could she have done more? Maybe, but given her situation, there is likely very little she could have realistically done beyond trying to talk to Toya more, which may or may not have even worked because of how much Toya was invested in his father.

  • @deltashard7980
    @deltashard7980 6 месяцев назад

I don't like it when people say that this episode is the rest of the family blaming themselves, because it seems people don't know how to learn from the past. There is such a difference between asking "how was i at fault" and "what could i have done better". One is entirely unproductive and damaging while the other is how you learn for the future. Endeavor is at fault for what happened to his family, fully. Id listen to an argument that rei had a hand in it, but most of the blame lies with Endeavor. And i don't think any of his family disagreed. All of them simply acknowledged what they could've done better in the situation. They're not blaming themselves, because at that point in time, all of them, especially the children, only acted on what they knew, which wasn't much. Carrying the responsibility of Toya isn't the same as trying to take blame for him. Not only is it better to learn from those events to keep them from happening again, but narratively and pragmatically, helping endeavor deal with Toya is the best option.
Im not that great at words. Don't be too quick to judge what i mean.

The past, what he did, will never go away, but attoning and making sure you dont make the same mistakes again is necessary to move on.

What do you mean be safe with his heat? The whole point of endeavor trying to make a kid with both quirks is that there isn’t any way to be safer with the fire quirk besides just making your flames weaker. he never taught toya anything but how to unleash bigger and bigger moves even though endeavor is shown putting out his own flames all the time. so, when toya got emotional and his flames erupted out on the mountain, he didn't even know how to stop them.
