THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH (1999) Pierce Brosnan - James Bond Revisited
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 9 май 2021
- Despite opening on the same day as TITANIC, Pierce Brosnan's second outing as James Bond 007, TOMORROW NEVER DIES, was a big box office hit. A third Brosnan Bond, THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH, was put immediately into production, resulting in yet another controversial instalment that has its defenders and critics. A more serious Bond outing, this one has a female villain (Sophie Marceau's Electra King), Denise Richards as the Bond girl, and Robert Carlyle, and while fans generally consider it a cut above what was to come (DIE ANOTHER DAY), its reputation has been sullied in recent years. Check out this latest instalment of James Bond Revisited and unpack THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH!

Love when valentin helps james just before he dies. They were far from friends, but the honor and respect was still there
Yes. Had Zukovsky never been shot by Bond in the knee (as we learn in GoldenEye), he would have not been in position to save his life with the cane gun. 👍
Look all things considered, Pierce Brosnan honestly gave three back to back to back great performances as James Bond. I’ll die on that hill for sure.
in fairness is not about the bond actor. I don't think anyone can point at a bond actor and say a movie sucks because of him. It's about the whole package. I liked this one a lot actually. Much much more than tomorrow never dies which I think is pretty awful.
I’m surprised so many people do not like Tomorrow Never Dies, I think the story holds up more than people really think. I also think Martin Campbell should of directed it.
@@crodo123 I don't put Lazenby under that quote. He's really bad.
@@nitehunter91 well lazenby sucks but the movie is amazing. the statement still stands.
Brosnan will always be my favorite bond.
Denise Richards + Sophie Marceau.....this perfection will never be matched again. Them 2 alone make this a classic, timeless bond.
Don't care what anyone says, this is my favorite Pierce Brosnan Bond movie. I saw this as a teen and I fell in love with Sophie Marceau.
Same here : its the only one of the Brosnan era of 007 movies that has "merit" : where Die Another Day had CGI, shootouts and an invisible Aston Martin Vanquish et cetera and it's predecessors with unnecessary humour, along with backstories that add little to the plot, this one made a huge difference.
I'll bypass Denise Richards/Christmas Jones (she's only part of a narrative) the most powerful performances come from Brosnan, Judi Dench, Robbie Coltrane, Sophie Marceau, Desmond Llewelyn and Robert Carlyle et cetera - this is good as it gets!.
Brosnan could return based on this- ruclips.net/video/kkZcauh0sBc/видео.html
@@anthonylewis2080 The only Pierce Brosman movie I don't like is Die another Day But I actually like this on a lot too.
I fell in love with her too. She was amazing. Most beautiful Bond girl ever for me
On the VHS copy of this movie, they had a nice montage of Desmond Llewelyn as Q. It was touching.
With ‘Nobody does it better’ played in the background
I get chills every time even as a kid
Yes it was I had the laserdisc.
I remember that so well. It’s really awesome. ❤️
I remember seeing this and falling in love with how beautiful Sophie Marceau is. Then I saw Lost & Found and her cello scene the same year... Oh Lord... That woman was instantly an angel to my eyes.
She also looked great in Braveheart
She is a beautiful sensual women.
She's absolute perfection
I was sad when the Q actor died days after this movie came out. He was do charming.
When I heard Desmond Llewelyn had died I remember thinking, well he was old. Then it turned out he died in a car crash. I remember the newspapers suggesting that he liked gadgets and fast cars, which was why he crashed, but it was complete garbage. It was just unfortunate.
Edit: He died a few months after the film came out, driving to a book signing.
The best of the best!
VERONA (VERONA) It was before the press thing
Yeah, and tragically ironic that the guy who’s fame was based upon being the guy who supplied Bond with his awesome cars that he would proceed to smash up, always to Q’s vocal chagrine, he then died in a car crash . . . No one would have seen that coming, and it was like he was robbed of his retirement. All of the fascinating interviews we would have gotten from him, lost to us, is one thing. But his opportunity to bask in the glory of his success was stolen from him, his family and his many, many fans. A terrible tragedy. ✌️👍
@@garrick3727 : Great comment 👍
Defended this movie on a podcast a few weeks back. For me the merit of this movie all comes (don’t say it!) back to how brilliantly portrayed Elektra is. She’s truly a unique presence, especially for a Bond movie.
Electra : 'You cannot kill me, James. You will miss me.'
Bond shoots Electra.
Bond : 'I never miss.'
One of the greatest lines in a 007-movie ever...
That's what they meant with "I guess they never miss, huh?"
Fantastic moment!
Yes, it's also a great scene in that he just offs her. I wish they'd been a bit braver with Bond over the years and given him some more callous scenes. Apart from this, there's the one in For Your Eyes Only where he kicks the guys car off the cliff. There's the "You've had your six" scene in Dr No, and Craig had a similar one at the beginning of Casino Royale. Not too many others, unfortunately.
killed by a pun
@Garrick: I wholeheartedly agree!
Strangely, contrary to what is said I find this is the most rewatchable Bond movie. Def for me, the one I've watched the most.
If you had to watch the best movie in the world 10+ times in a short period of time you would hate it. He is sadly biased about this. the movie is underrated.
I expected him to love this.... TWINE is incredible / underrated
Brosnan could return based on this- ruclips.net/video/kkZcauh0sBc/видео.html
Same. This one and also Roger Moore's
@@crodo123 agree he definitely got jaded watching this so many times. he didn't get jaded on moonraker because its Bond... in space. that takes a while to wrap your head around.
Sophie Marceau made a whole generation fall in love...
She still looks pretty good.
I think this movie is underrated... It's actually grown on me over the years. That said, I never had to watch it over and over. I think I would begin to hate any movie if I had to watch it over and over.
it really is.
Agreed. I kept saying "WHAT!" at my tv watching this but I sympathize with him 😅
The Bond film with Denise Richards as a scientist also lays the groundwork for all the best aspects of Craig's era (same writers). Ironic.
In the theater, during the double entendre, everyone went "Ahhhhhhh' at the corny-ness of that line. It was fun at the time
I will unashamedly admit that this is my favorite Bond movie and the reason I got all of the DVDs before Casino Royale made Bond cool again.
I thought Bond slipping back into his persona was perfect. It was a persona, he showed he was a real spy, and how spies compartmentalize their world. It also showed the “danger” of emotion.
Spot on!
@@verona8144 please elaborate.
I agree. Anything less isn't Bond!
Brosnan like a schoolboy with his first crush. He was a wimp in this movie.
I agree entirely, he's let her in, he's been hurt, but that's the real him, and the world doesn't need real, it needs the larger than life character, so he puts aside what he really feels and becomes bond again, down to the one liner
Sophie Marceau might be the most beautiful Bond girl of the entire Brosnan era
Nothing against Denise Richards, but I would go with Marceau any day
Monica Bellucci ftw
Halle Berry was gorgeous too
The accent doesn't hurt, either.
@@leeweesquee Bro the Topic is About Brosnan Era😂...NOT the Craig Era
Every time I watch a negative review for this movie, I know I can go to the comments and find other people like me who loved it. TWINE fans represent.
There are for sure a lot of defenders. A divisive entry.
@@JoBloOriginals Stop comparing every Pierce Brosnan film to GoldenEye 🙄
Don't forget "I always wanted to have Christmas in Turkey."

Nothing goes with turkey like stuffing.
This is my favorite Pierce Brosnan Bond film.
Ditto.
I clicked faster than you can say Christmas only comes once a year
It's hardly "I think he's attempting re-entry!".

@@Dustbinlid1 are you referring to what I think you are
This has my favorite Bond theme and will always hold a special place in my heart for being the last movie I saw together with my father.
I actually really, really like this Bond film. And Brosnan is my favourite Bond actor too
The day Desmond Llewelyn died, 12/19/99, I raced back to my movie theater to see TWINE for a fourth time because i had to say goodbye.
That goodbye scene must have been fairly devastating after that.
The world is not enough by garbage is my favourite soundtrack of all james bond themes
Please people explain why this song one of the best Bond themes in ratings. I don't know lyrics (not speaking english) as any other song. But music and singing I didn't get where is so good, i'm not expert in genres. Also is this villains song?
I simply Love the song. The moody tone the lyrics, i Just Love the song and to me is the best
And yes it is the villian song but so is the Imperial march of star wars.
That was about the only thing that wasn't crap from this movie.
That and You Know My Name from Casino Royale ❤
I can honestly still watch this movie and still enjoy it as much as I did the first time. It all depends on what type of Bond film you want to see at the moment.
I actually like this one. It's one of my favourite Bond films. I agree that it didn't live up to its potential with certain ideas, like Raynard not feeling pain. But I liked alot of the elements and the set pieces.
@Studio Terrible it's better than die another day. Good job, well done!!!
Denise Richards was so insanely hot.
Agreed. Can’t believe she was with Charlie Sheen, I was so jealous of him back then lmao
@@veespa_ Well to be honest...everybody was with Charlie Sheen at some point.
Shame she can't act
@@astrosleep9625 it's not necessarily required when you're there to just be eye candy...
I always liked The World Is Not Enough and I still do. I think it is a good movie and Brosnan's second best after GoldenEye. Everyone is entitled to have their own opinion of course but I don't think the movie is even nearly as bad as this review claims...
I was about to turn 14 when I saw this one in the cinema and I really liked it. Denise Richards while maybe not anything major in her acting was something a young guy like me really enjoyed to see in large cinema :D Also while a bit silly it was still entertaining to see Robbie Coltrane returning as Valentin Zukovsky!
One of my favourite Bonds. 9/10.
The same exact thing happened to me that I watched it over and over too many times and the more I watched it the more apparent the flaws were. I honestly don't know why I kept watching it just to critique it the more I did but I loved James Bond that much
hell yea I loved the N64 video game when I was a kid, I wonder how it holds up today
Like most N64 games, it's a little rough going back to if you don't remember it's been 20 years since. lol
Nothing ever really topped Goldeneye, obviously.
@@jaybling6687 Everything or Nothing
@@MrPoeGhost no matter how old the game is it can always be a great game. Goldeneye ,perfect dark and The world is not enough are my 3 favorite 64 games which I still play today at age 49.
In all honesty, this is probably the second best Brosnan Bond film after GoldenEye. A lot of things worked, but maybe with one more re-write, it could’ve been great.
Now I'm worried, I also really liked this movie as a kid and I have fond memories of it, but I haven't seen it in years. But yeah, Denise Richards was unintentionally hilarious in her role, which is perfected in Undercover Brother where she was intentionally hilarious.
Anyone remember the beginning of "Never Say Never Again"?
Bond got "killed" during a training session. M told him, "Fanatical Revolutionary kidnapped a millionaire's daughter and hold her captive for eight weeks, of course she would have been brainwash, could have turned."
Nice call out.
Wow that's quite the foreshadowing
The plot of this movie is a very clever and very underrated !
Yes. It's easily one of the most dark & grim storylines in the series.
I really enjoyed this film. It’s pretty much my favorite out of the Brosnan Films
Still a better movie than Die Another Day, a movie with a cool premise of Bond being a prisoner for an extended period of time.... that resolves that in the length of the intro song and devolves into nonsensical plot holes, campy acting, forced cameos, bad CG, and the editing of a mediocre film school student.
It started very good with the chase thru a minefield on hovercrafts and Bond finally captured , tortured released and a hazard to MI6 . The sword fight was staged good and liked the henchman with diamonds in his face but thats it . Hey I'm a faithful Bond fan still better than a Moore 007 film .
I'm LOVING your 'Bond' series, JoBlo. Your channel is criminally underrated.
I LOVED this movie when I was a kid. I remember going with my brother and mom. My mom typically falls asleep in movies like this but she was on the edge of her seat. It was a nice experience that the three of us walked out enjoying it so much. Watching it as an adult I have to agree with a lot of what was said here, but it will always have a special place in my heart.
Thanks for these episodes. You guy's put a lot of hard work into these. Very insightful and interesting. Keep it up JoBlo
This was the first Movie in ever saw on DVD. It was mind blowing. The movie itself would have been great if it had some better casting in places and some tweaking to the story.
Some tweaking is an understatement.

7:44 everyone in the cinema groaned when I saw this in Scotland as an exchange student
Your videos on James Bond have been one of the highlights of the last few months. 10/10
Thank you so much - that means a lot
Many points and issues with the film aside, specifically in regards to Renard the biggest issue for me is that they gave him a great setup, perfectly fitting of a memorable Bond villain, but did nothing with it. His 'superhuman' resistance plays absolutely no role at all in the final fight or any confrontation whatsoever, making him no different than any regular villain or thug before.
This movie had 2 villains who both died 15 minutes apart from each other.
At least, octopussy, living daylights, FRWL villains died some time apart
Yeah i mean, he holds a hot rock for a few seconds and that's about it
One of the best ones from Brosnan.
The theme song is iconic.
Underrated movie imo, ahead of its time in many ways
Renard is definitely the henchman. People say he’s the villain coz he’s the big threat at the end, but there’s been a lot of final boss fights with henchmen instead of the main villain. Live and Let Die, Spy Who Loved Me, debatably Living Daylights and Tomorrow Never Dies all end with an attack from the henchmen that feels way bigger than the fights with the main villain, and Diamonds are Forever and Man With The Golden Gun also have henchmen as the last enemies standing.
I like TWINE and I think it's Pierce Brosnan's second best after Goldeneye. The movie has its flaws but I think it's underappreciated. I agree that Christmas Jones is one of the weaker Bond girls but I think there is worse than her, I'm not annoyed by her.
facts
Well, compared to goodnight and Tanya Roberts, Christmas is better . But no point of lowering stds to like a character
@@randomhuman97 Yes, I think Mary Goodnight, Tanya Roberts character, Tiffany Case, Plenty O'Toole, Rosie Carver and Jinx are worse.
Agreed on all points
Yes. The film gets too much heat. It would have a very different legacy even if they only made changes to the final 10 mins.
1. Most underrated and underappreciated film in the series. 2. Octopussy was Q/Desmond's finest hour. 3. There should be a coffee table photobook of Bond actors goofing off behind the scenes.
John Cleese played 'R' like a slightly more intelligent 'Basil Fawlty'. I was genuinely upset when I heard about Desmond Llewelyn's death and how he died. Bond movies have never been quite the same since his passing. R.I.P, Q x
"...never been quite the same since his passing" Truer words have never been spoken~
I am so glad your doing the series! I watched the previous, cant wait for the next.
I think this movie is criminally underrated. Yes Denise Richards was miscast but at least she was great to look at. The villains, the story, the score, the music was all top notch Bond stuff
I really love this Bond movie, watched it so many times, no problem at all in my opinion. Great opening scene with the boat chase, great soundtrack from David Arnold, Valentin is back, good action but also a good story with good pacing and good characters, I never had a problem with Denise Richard honestly
This movie was my favorite Brosnan Bond film as a kid.
I loved the action.
I liked the Q and R scene.
I felt absolutely DEVASTATED when Bond's BMW got sawed in half and had its alarm chirp die out.
I was terrified when Elektra revealed her severed earlobe, and I thought for a long time that Sophie Marceau had that injury in real life because of how convincing the CGI was.
I'll let you into a secret - the 'BMW' that gets sawn in half was a replica made out of foamboard! (I saw it on display at the Science Museum in London about 20 years ago)
this is my favorite one…it has everything
LOVE these Bond videos! Thanks for making them!
Thank you for watching!

Great video guys. Glad I subbed, your work is entertaining and well produced.
10:00 definitely the best Bond music video ever
This is one of my favorite post-Connery Bond movies.
But then it is amazing how many of my favorite movies have Denise Richards in them...
Ohhhh yeaaaa buddy. Mondays are the best day of the week now cause of these!
Happy days.. just in time for dinner. Love these videos. Thanks for the great content.
At first I was really confused as it said 27 years ago 😂🤦🏻♂️😟
@@kurtcobain7886 lol.. don't worry, you are not the first to get confused by this. 🤣🤣
The world is not enough, and unfortunely Denise's acting. Great as usual!!! Thanx!!!
your laugh at the "christmas comes once a year" is so genuine I cannot stop laughing. Also Moonraker is a gem. Roger Moore is a gem.
This 007 movie holds a very special place in my heart. It had a lot of 'firsts' for me as a youngster. It was the first James Bond movie I saw at my local Cinema with my first date which ended with a kiss at the young ladies' doorstep, which made me feel like Bond!
It was also the very first DVD I ever witnessed in my life, purely by chance at a Dixons entertainment store. And I never forgot the quality. It was the boat chase and I was outstanded that digital technology was that advanced and that widescreen TVs were becoming so popular.
I agree, the film really does feel a bit long and I enjoyed it much more when it first came out. It still has some great moments, excellent music cues and Denise Richards' performance never bothered me. Christmas wasn't a central character, merely to help Bond really.
I thought Robert Carlyle's performance was weak even when I first saw the film. I remember seeing him in Cracker (also with Robbie Coltrane) and he really was terrifying. Here, he seemed somewhat restricted.
I still enjoy the film and this was a great revisit. 👍⭐👏
I think your review was fair. Would've liked to see you discuss the darker turn that Brosnan takes, and M getting a story arc, teasing what's to come in the Craig era. The entire castle climax is also thrilling and memorable. The submarine fight is not so good tho...
Bravo! Another great review!
One of the best Bond movies
Thankyou very much for your thoughts
I love these Bond revisited vids. I was never interested in the Bond franchise until Daniel Craig came along--my dad made me sit through a couple Connery movies when I was young and I didn't think much of them--but your videos have prompted me to go back and watch my way through the prior Bond eras. And while Daniel Craig will likely always be my favorite Bond, it's been fun to learn about the franchise's history.
Seen every single one so far. Good stuff !
That line when Q leaves always sticks with me. I failed the first part, but I'll always aspire to the 2nd. Thank you all involved with TWINE for that.
Great opening titles sequence.
Great Song.
Great David Arnold score.
My second favorite Bond film. Highly underrated.
World is not enough is my favorite 007 movie and Denise Richards is my favorite bond girl and Sophie Marceau is my favorite villain ❤
The biggest thing that could have improved this movie is completely removing the Christmas Jones character. Also you have some of the film wrong. Elektra cut her own ear off. She had already convinced Renard to turn to her side. He was in fact a henchman with Electra being the main villian.
Your comment about hurt acting made me immediately think about Scott Bakula's hurt/tired acting.
Thank you for mentioning Brosnan’s ticks. He was my favorite Bond, but instincts are not always the best and from TND on he is allowed to use them. Seems like no one bothered to direct him during physical scenes.
Something most people folks may not know, at Pinewood Studios in the garden near the moat, there is a nice modest memorial for Q. When i discovered that one day on my lunch break. I thought it really classy the Pinewood had that there for such a veteran of film.
I wanted blue lense glasses after seeing them in this film too and actually found a pair. So happy
I feel Pierce Brosnan never got good Bond films after Goldeneye. He's great as Bond which makes the films more disappointing for me. Loved Denise Richards in Wild Things but she was miscast here.
Renard was such a missed opportunity. A villain who can't feel pain? That's almost a superpower. The options are so numerous for battles with Bond and they never exploited it.
The sub fight scene sucks. But I like how his inability to feel plays a major role in the story (its the reason he's willing to kill himself for Eecktra's benefit).
I still think The World Is Not Enough is better than Quantum of Solace, Spectre and No Time To Die. And I prefer Brosnan to Craig, although Craig benefitted from Casino Royale and Skyfall being very good Bond films.
I loooove this film! Denise Richards was responsible for kick starting my puberty lol.
Kudos to mentioning Scott Walker’s song... I can see why it was replaced. It could work for a Daniel Craig Bond film.
Some facts I pulled off the wiki about elektra king so In the novelisation, Elektra does not die immediately after she's shot by Bond. Instead, as she lies dying on the bed, she begins to sing a lullaby.
The film's original ending had Elektra survive her gunshot wound and was recovering in hospital, where she was visited by Bond. The ending was changed because it was considered too downbeat.
I got to write a review of this movie for the newspaper I was working for at the time. The headline: New Bond Leaves Reviewer Shaken, Not Stirred.
I really like these reviews, already waiting for the next one. Dalton is my absolute favourite as Bond. He has it all. Wish he could have had his third one but I'm happy to have at least two great outings. Brosnan had only one, the first one. Greetings from Finland!
There’s a quote a reviewer once said about The World is Not Enough that pretty sums it up.
The World is Not Enough is just not enough.
I'd still rather watch this than Quantum Of Suckage. At least it's still a Bond movie. Not every franchise action movie has to be edgelord friendly and go for an Oscar.
It's Awesome👏🏻!
I recently rewatch this movie and I was surprised by It. I didn't remember the dark tone of the plot. I like It.
Denise Richards is very similar to Jill St John with regard to her contribution to the Bond franchise.
"I'm sorry Denise, i' am still loving you". KKKK
Sophie Marceau is one of the most beautiful actress in the Bond franchise. Her character is great and i think she had so much fun playing that.
This was my first Bond film ever so I hold it in a high regard. I always thought it was underrated. I found Brosnan's performance in this to be one of the best. Sophie as Electra was good too. Its intresting seeing the main villan as a woman. When I first saw it I thought Renard was the villan but on subsequent viewings it seems undeniable to me that Electra is. Kinda like how Carver is the main villain in TND despite not bring apart of the last fight.
Robert Carlyle says on an interview that him and Electra were both villains.
She couldn'thave pulled of her Plan without him so that at least makes him a villain not a disposable henchman.
There can be 2 villains like in living daylights and octopussy . . . Also, Rosa klebb and Irma bunt are sorta bond villains (If blofeld wasn't in the movie)
I remember going to see a View To a Kill as a child.. Great film.
@@verona8144 So, the producer of this video is talking about rewatching old Bond films and which were good and bad (Moonraker). I state I liked A View to a Kill, and you say that's out of context, and it's beyond you? Lol, wot.
TWINE has always been my favorite Pierce Brosnan "Bond Film". I mean sure it can seem a little "dated" compared to the more recent "Bond Films" like Daniel Craig's "Casino Royale (remake)". Which is also amazing!
But I also agree with other people on here, I think it's an "underrated" Pierce Brosnan "James Bond" film.
Also "Elektra King" is probably one of my top favorite or the favorite James Bond characters (well besides James Bond). I must think she was so interesting, and I loved her clothes!
