Agree wholeheartedly. Dalton brings to bear a degree of aggressive, dark realism that most other actors have struggled to match. Maybe Craig is the closest.
I loved the Living Daylights. My mum let me watch it in VHS when I was 13. In hindsight, I love that scene where he allows the one note cello player to retrieve her instrument from her hotel. He slams the coupe's door and barks: "You couldn't have chosen the violin?". Lol, I love how real the reaction is. It reminds me of how I sometimes retort to certain demands my gf makes lol.

Timothy Dalton my favourite Bond. He actually paved the way for Daniel Craig playing the first darker Bond. He had 2 very solid entries with The Living Daylights & Licence to Kill. Dalton is the forgotten underrated Bond who never really got the respect he deserved. While Craig is currently getting praise for a more human Bond, Dalton actually did it first.😁🥰😄☺️😃👍🍕

*laughs.* nice David Mamet reference. I was looking a the name and thinking, that seems familiar, where do I know that phrase from?
Also, I agree the the sentiment you've expressed. I know it's the popular thing to pretend that you liked x thing/person before everyone else realized they were good, but I actually did like the tonal changes that Dalton's Bond brought to the series. In a sense Dalton carried the suave aspect of Connery, without the glibness or sense that many of his outcomes were due to random luck as much as elite skill. Dalton's grit and determination felt more an 'accurate' depiction of what an elite spy's life might be like, sans the tedium of reality.

I honestly didn't watch dalton's bond much at all growing up. I had to revisit them and i do admire the seriousness in his approach to the role. He definitely sold the coldness of the character, yet still delivered some human moments. He was a bit of a rebellious bond, defying MI6 and their orders when he made a few morality calls. Not eliminating kara when he had her in sights because he knew she was no killer, or even resigning because he couldn't chalk up his friends' deaths in LTK to collateral damage and simply move on. He avenges them like most anyone would. I appreciate this take more than i did

It's a shame that the precarious financial situation of MGM/UA in the early 90s led to protracted lawsuits that took years to resolve because I completely agree that if Dalton had made a 3rd Bond he would get way more credit, credit which he highly deserves anyway.

Next to Stallone, Arnie and Peewee Herman he just didn't convince as a legit badass, even if its absurd to think the primary requirement for a secret agent would be how much they bench pressed. The 80s was all about OTT lead actors and effects and a kind of cartoonishness that the Brosnan movies were actively trying to lean away from.

TLD is one of my favourite Bond movies of all time, probably second only to Goldeneye. Probably the only flaw this movie has is that the villains are quite weak (which is especially sad as the villains in A View to a kill were some of the strongest of the franchise) and that the plot is a bit too complicated (not as much as Octopussy which is a mess plot-wise). LtK on the other hand - while still a very good movie - was a bit too dark for me to be one of my favourites. I would have loved to see a third movie with Dalton.

I actually kinda fell in love with Living Daylights. I watched all the Bond movies as a kid so from distant memory and common perception I kinda felt I didn't like Dalton. I defiantly remember License to Kill more and some of the brutal scenes. Rewatching Living Daylights though, it is a really fun and engaging film, while defiantly have more of a darker edge and grounding. I think the Afghan politics defiantly ages it, but I can get over it. The gadget thing though I think you are mistaken when you don't think there are a lot or it's less goofy. I mean there are milk grenades in the movie lol! Also I kinda love the A-Ha track, so much I actually bought a compilation of theirs for it (side recommendation for A-Ha they are a lot better than just one song). My only criticisms or nitpicks though are Joe Don Baker is kinda lame and silly as a villain, and the end bit were the Mujahideen randomly show up at the performance. Feels very corny and kills the mood a bit. Lastly, it has John Rhys Davies in the movie! How can you forget Saul/Gimli?!?

I always loved the Dalton films. Timothy Dalton deserved a longer run at the role, but it wasn't meant to be. On the plus side it means his tenure as Bond was pretty much perfect as he didn't make enough movies as Bond to make a weak one. Dalton's Bond also gave us an all action Bond before Daniel Craig. Had Dalton not had his tenure, I don't think Daniel Craig's era would have happened. This gave them an early blueprint for what would become Daniel Craig's version of Bond.

I find it amusing that everyone says that Timothy Dalton is lowly ranked on their lists of Bond actors/films, and yet when they are forced to actually watch Dalton's two movies and assess them properly, the truth is revealed - he is one of the best Bonds, and both movies are top ten for sure.
I might even add that "The Living Daylights" is in the top three.

I’m surprised you didn’t report the fact that the reason Timothy Dalton only did 2 Bond films, even though he was under contract for 5 years, was due to a major 6 YEAR lawsuit between the producers, during which time Dalton’s contract had expired and he was on to other projects. A pity, but he loves playing a variety of characters to challenge himself. He’s played the King of France, Mr. Rochester in Jane Eyre (freakin fabulous), Heathcliff, Julius Caesar, a great villain in Rocketeer, a complex scientist/hero/villain in Doom Patrol (HBO), which is GREAT, and many many others. Tragically, many of his films are hard to find now. ☹️ I have total respect for this intelligent, talented, principled, disciplined, kind, and to top it off, gorgeous man!

Hearing a-Ha described as a one hit wonder hurts my 80s kid soul. By 2009 they had sold 100 million records worldwide.
Their second single The Sun Always Shines on TV was a number one single here in the UK, and a solid gold mid 80s classic. Why it wasn’t quite as big elsewhere is a mystery (!) I’ve got strong memories of watching the promo video for Cry Wolf on TV as well.

I read that Dalton was considered to play Bond as far back as 1969. He was supposed to be 007 in OHMSS, but he was only 23 at the time and considered himself too young so they went with Lazenby instead.

Dalton was always my favourite Bond. I remember watching LTK several times back in the 1980s and loving it. Apart from Casino Royale, I never really warmed to Daniel Craig and find his films way too pretentious, overlong and downbeat.

I like to look at Dalton's brief tenure as Bond as being glass half full.
Although we didn't see anywhere near enough of Timothy Dalton in the role, if it hadn't been for the issues with NBC and Remington Steele, we might never have got him at all. And I'm glad that we got the two movies we did.
