"Still Surfin'" is a song written by Mike Love and Terry Melcher for the American pop band The Beach Boys. It was released on their 1992 album Summer In Paradise.
Awesome song. And I am a die hard Beach Boys fan who owns everything. I will not drink the Kool Aid and trash this effort. Mike and Terry succeeded in what they set out to accomplish...feel good summer songs.
+Kenneth Lemoine , Back then and even in the 1980's most people used to talk about how the Rolling Stones were the oldest rock band ever, I said NO! The Beach Boys got them beat by a good 3 years! Yes great stuff in 1992 and MIKE was a big part of it. As you can hear on this song.
"Maybe the Beach Boys have got you now .. with those waves, singin' Caroline .. Oh Caroline No .. Rollin' down that empty ocean road .. Get into the Surf On Time .." - from "Long May You Run", by Neil Young. I agree with you, ascrodin, "Still Surfin'" I think is probably the stand-out track on this 1992 BB album. It ably links the the past ("Did you ever wonder what happened to Surfer Joe ..?") with the current day (1992) environment - where the old 60's surfers are still surfin' ..
This, to my mind, is the absolute pick of the tracks from this album .. a Coastal-Baby-Boomer's mantra in the New Millennium .... hell, the entire album is good, man ..
I'm glad someones standing up for them! Mike Love especially gets panned a lot and this album has not had the best of press! I like the stuff they did in this period!
Co-writer and producer Terry Melcher was the son of Doris Day. He passed away in 2004 after a long battle with melanoma. In the early sixtie's he and Beach Boy to be Bruce Johnston formed "Bruce and Terry" and, soon after, the Rip Chord's. Nice song and great post. sbhpoker!
A moody mellow nostalgic song about a life of surfing. He didn't do much with his law degree because his real passion and that of his surfer girl was just surfing. The harmonies are classic beach boys and their trademark and that's what makes the song great. The lyrics tell a story that is moody blues.
All the haters want everything to sound the same, this is their late80's 90's sound and I think it is a lot better than some of the stuff from before, it's not the 60's surfin USA sound but this stuff is good!
i just bought it yesterday i cant waite to recieve it ihad a copy of it years ago and i love this tune just like i love all of them great tour this year
I like the album more now than when I first boyght it . For me there are four really strong songs.....plus some really great CDW singing! Easy to be a critic but more fun to hear from true fans.... John Hunter Phillips is among the very best of fans (plus does some great music!) keep it up JHP!
That's a good point, late 80s/early 90s had a weird mix of regular 80s production, "toned down" 80s, and some proto-90s, best example I can think of for 90s in the 80s was Edie Brickell's "What I Am", which was briefly popular in 88, then largely ignored, then became "cool" again in 93. I guess it's the same as how disco was still around in 80 yet new wave began in 78 but soft 70s pop died after 77. But some stuff seems to take awhile to catch on (like grunge not catching on until 92).
90s pop culture didn't immediately begin on January 1, 1990. It's not like pop automatically became like Alanis Morrissette or Jewel overnight. 1990-1992 was still a lot like the 80s in many ways, Things didn't begin to change until Nirvana's album "Nevermind" came out. If you ever watched Beverly Hills 90210, you'll know what I mean (that show did a great job of keeping up with the times).
The Beach Boys put out beautiful, thoughtful albums in the 70's like "Sunflower", "Surf's Up", "So Tough" and "Holland", not to mention the classic "Pacific Ocean Blue" by Dennis Wilson........yet this is the shit Mike Love wanted to do......WTF!
Lyrics He used to ride the sidewalks in a landlocked Town A solitary surfer still he got around He had his favorite spots now Where the best rides could be found with posters on his wall from surfer magazine His room looked like a shrine to the surfing scene go to Hawaii out of high school was his big time college dream (That's where the girls are) Did you ever wonder what happened to Surfer Joe He up and took a trailer down to Mexico with a pretty senorita We both used to know You can see him catch a wave in the morning light and sometimes you can find him on his board at night A silhouette on water as the sun dips outta sight He's still surfing (still surfing) He's still surfing (still surfing) You'll catch him on a wave on his way to class then be back there after school on his daylight glass Surfers always love them summer days with a board in the water rolling with the waves He's still surfing He's always been a surfer since the early days, spending the summer searching for that perfect wave He and his surfing senorita never seem to age He doesn't do a whole lot with his law degree They thought about a major Oceanography but he does a lot of thinking about how to save the Sea (That's where the waves are) Things up North were getting kinda out of hand So he got a break to see the ride on the sand with his little mama seated in a surfer's never never Land You can see him catch a wave in the morning light and sometimes you can find him on his board at night A silhouette on water as the sun dips outta sight You'll catch him on a wave on his way to class then be back there after school on his daylight glass He's still surfing In the morning light he still surfing On his board at night he's still surfing In the summer days he's still surfing rolling with the waves he's still surfing
I used to think that this song was called Surfin Joe. After watching a movie recently called "Killer Joe" Killing Joe" was the most hated character you could ever see in a movie. But SURFIN JOE would have made a better name then "still surfing". Don't you think?
I know I'm swimming against the tide here, but this album isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. It isn't their best effort by a long shot, but it's certainly better than many others. Listen to MIU (if you can stand it) and you'll see what I mean. Great album art on this one.
David Brailsford did your jump in this song on the US version, I took mine back to the record store, and the next one done the same . I also bought the English version as well a year later !
I agree with your larger point. But Nevermind came out in 1991. And most classical rock acts started abandoning 80's production in the late 80's. Albums like Freedom by Neil Young, Steel Wheels by the Rolling Stones and Oh Mercy by Bob Dylan were much more organic compared to what those same acts had been releasing in the mid 80's (check out Landing on Water by NY or Empire Burlesque by BD for good examples!). As such, this album sounded massively dated from the day it came out.
@andy3576 TOO RIGHT! There are some really good songs and covers on this album. They're not All winners, but there have always been a few bad ones on some otherwise great albums.
I actually like this song, but I feel like I have been dumbed down over the years to accept this as a good Beach Boys song. It certainly is no Warmth of the Sun.
This album isn't that bad? It has a summery, beach boy feel to it, like they set out to do. Plus, It was the 90's, they're not going to spend 30 years doing the same stuff ? This song has alot of nostalgia to it, i like it

After reading some of the inane negative commentary about this album, I've come to the conclusion that some people just like to bitch & be hyper critical. Geez people, if you don't like it, that's fine. But why be so damned caustic? Every painting can't be a Mona Lisa! If you can do better, then get with it. I think it was a pretty good effort by the guy's. Let it be!
The song is not as bad as many think (IMHO) but the lyrics are mostly dregs. The harmonies though; trademark brilliance. How do they get those "Ooooooh's and ahhhhh's so perfect? These guys could sing the want ads and make them sound good.
Listening to this passively, it sounds nice, a bit loungey, just regular pop. But when I pay attention it just sounds so plastic and constructed that it actually depresses me... I can see why it's hated..
Had Mike and Terry been able to pull this album off in 1989 and included Kokamo, then you may have had a hit record. Not a classic, but a nice catchy one. But I think that this album suffers from the same thing that Imaginations does. A good album ruined by horrible production. Brian Wilson has proven over the last 10 years that he is still a good producer (That Lucky Old Sun)
Awesome song. And I am a die hard Beach Boys fan who owns everything. I will not drink the Kool Aid and trash this effort. Mike and Terry succeeded in what they set out to accomplish...feel good summer songs.
Love this song !!! Beach Boys classic sound!!❤❤❤
I love this song, it reminds me of the old Beach Boys style. This is an instant classic.
Love this song!
me too
Love that we still get those classic beach boys harmonies but with the 90’s style of beat.
I loved this album
great song and album.
If u hear beach boys then you love every one of his songs , the summer spirit is in every song. This is the band of the summer....
listening to all their albums this one is quite underrated.
Best song on the album.
Amazing song. Surfing and Summer just like the 60's 💥🏄♂️
love this song ,one of my favs on the album ...harmoneys are still out there ...
Still love whole album 🏄🏽♂️🌊
I really like this song. Great album artwork by Robert Lynn Nelson of Hawaii, I believe.
Amazing how the Beach Boys were still amazing in the 90s
+Kenneth Lemoine , Back then and even in the 1980's most people used to talk about how the Rolling Stones were the oldest rock band ever, I said NO! The Beach Boys got them beat by a good 3 years! Yes great stuff in 1992 and MIKE was a big part of it. As you can hear on this song.
Am I hearing the same song? This is equal parts hideous and boring!
K.J. Lemoine I Was Were There
The only band to hit #1 25 years apart
I wish they broke up in 1977 before they ruined their image so much.
"Maybe the Beach Boys have got you now .. with those waves, singin' Caroline .. Oh Caroline No .. Rollin' down that empty ocean road .. I'm glad someones standing up for them! Mike Love especially gets panned a lot and this album has not had the best of press! I like the stuff they did in this period!
katakisLives I like Mike Love actually I have his new album Unleash The Love it’s not bad all the songs r good there’s one called Ram Raj
standing up?
I like this song too...
it's just a song...if it makes you feel good listening to it then it's decent...that's how I feel about it...
Very solid song! Thank you Beach Boys
Co-writer and producer Terry Melcher was the son of Doris Day. He passed away in 2004 after a long battle with melanoma. In the early sixtie's he and Beach Boy to be Bruce Johnston formed "Bruce and Terry" and, soon after, the Rip Chord's. Nice song and great post. sbhpoker!

Terry was a very nice guy, I met only once. We were at Mike Love's wedding in Lake Tahoe with his family. This song has perfect harmony. jhp
i just bought it yesterday i cant waite to recieve it ihad a copy of it years ago and i love this tune just like i love all of them great tour this year
Smooooth
I am a trick skier and I would like to say hi to the beach boys as a chimney sweep. I catch waves on my hill.
I like the album more now than when I first boyght it . For me there are four really strong songs.....plus some really great CDW singing! Easy to be a critic but more fun to hear from true fans.... John Hunter Phillips is among the very best of fans (plus does some great music!) keep it up JHP!
ugh. classic
It sounds like Catch A Wave beat a little bit I like it I’m digging this song already it feels like Summer when I listen to this song

@DisgruntledHobox The album is really underated, reminds me of classic Beach Boys!
Yeah! Classic beach boys but sounding 90s
I think the harmonies are spor on. I like this alot.

Mike loves smile
Lyrics
He used to ride the sidewalks in a landlocked Town
A solitary surfer still he got around
He had his favorite spots now
Where the best rides could be found with posters on his wall from surfer magazine
His room looked like a shrine to the surfing scene go to Hawaii out of high school was his big time college dream
(That's where the girls are)
Did you ever wonder what happened to Surfer Joe
He up and took a trailer down to Mexico with a pretty senorita
We both used to know
You can see him catch a wave in the morning light and sometimes you can find him on his board at night
A silhouette on water as the sun dips outta sight
He's still surfing (still surfing)
He's still surfing (still surfing)
You'll catch him on a wave on his way to class then be back there after school on his daylight glass
Surfers always love them summer days with a board in the water rolling with the waves
He's still surfing
He's always been a surfer since the early days, spending the summer searching for that perfect wave
He and his surfing senorita never seem to age
He doesn't do a whole lot with his law degree
They thought about a major Oceanography but he does a lot of thinking about how to save the Sea
(That's where the waves are)
Things up North were getting kinda out of hand
So he got a break to see the ride on the sand with his little mama seated in a surfer's never never Land
You can see him catch a wave in the morning light and sometimes you can find him on his board at night
A silhouette on water as the sun dips outta sight
You'll catch him on a wave on his way to class then be back there after school on his daylight glass
He's still surfing
In the morning light he still surfing
On his board at night he's still surfing
In the summer days he's still surfing rolling with the waves he's still surfing
Good song in my opinion, probably the best on a poor album.
I used to think that this song was called Surfin Joe. After watching a movie recently called "Killer Joe" Killing Joe" was the most hated character you could ever see in a movie. But SURFIN JOE would have made a better name then "still surfing". Don't you think?
Good late beach boys song
cette chanson est envoutante
Thanks for your opinion, bye.

Completely agree! M.I.U. sucked and so did 15 big ones! This is much better than them both
They still might have another one after That's Why God Made The Radio
Believe it or not. I liked the album.
It wouldn't be the final Beach Boys record now, if you know what I mean.
any chance you could upload the uk version of under the boardwalk if you are still around youtube?
David Brailsford did your jump in this song on the US version, I took mine back to the record store, and the next one done the same . I also bought the English version as well a year later !
This album is so tough to find. Not that there's too much interest on my part since Brian isnt a part of it and Stamos is.
I agree with your larger point. But Nevermind came out in 1991. And most classical rock acts started abandoning 80's production in the late 80's. Is this a different release (American)to the British which is a lot smoother.
I Were There
@andy3576 TOO RIGHT! There are some really good songs and covers on this album. They're not All winners, but there have always been a few bad ones on some otherwise great albums.
Thank God Brian was wise enough to get so far away as he could get from this album...., Landy or not....
Ditto!
I actually like this song, but I feel like I have been dumbed down over the years to accept this as a good Beach Boys song. It certainly is no Warmth of the Sun.
Why wasnt Brian on this album? Was this recorded while he was still with Landy?
This album isn't that bad? It has a summery, beach boy feel to it, like they set out to do. Plus, It was the 90's, they're not going to spend 30 years doing the same stuff ? This song has alot of nostalgia to it, i like it
Anyone has the lyrics is it only me who really loves The Beach Boys
Do you wanna dance version?

This almost sounds like Getcha Back a little bit has good melodies to it
They actually got one good song off this album. Somehow.
After reading some of the inane negative commentary about this album, I've come to the conclusion that some people just like to bitch & be hyper critical. I bought the tape way back in 92---and burned it.
240p for the nostalgically shitty sound of a casette!
Listening to this passively, it sounds nice, a bit loungey, just regular pop.
But when I pay attention it just sounds so plastic and constructed that it actually depresses me... I can see why it's hated..
I agree, and feel he gets way to much flack from Brian Wilson freaks.
This album isn't that bad at all and this song is kinda a great cruising song.
Best song from their shittiest album.
the cover is nice though.
It seems to me that most Beach Boy/Brian Wilson tunes around this time all have the same awful drummer.
Had Mike and Terry been able to pull this album off in 1989 and included Kokamo, then you may have had a hit record. Not a classic, but a nice catchy one. But I think that this album suffers from the same thing that Imaginations does. A good album ruined by horrible production. SURFER JOE!!!
The best song on a terrible album
Yeah, exactly, it was the 90's. So how come they had to give it t the most god-awful 80's production in history?
You need to get the shit out of your ears! Great album!
Let's hope NOT!
Holy crap, those programmed snares sound terrible.
Get a hearing aid, Pal!
I'm a Beach Boys fan but this song is disgusting. Did Mike learn anything from the band glorious past ?
Mike has a clothes pin on his nose.....ugh!
Non
