Every time I see footage of songs where Dennis or Carl is the lead I get choked up. I think it’s just pure empathy for Brian. I’ve seen too many interviews of him talking about the love he has for them. It’s just so sad he lost both of his baby brothers. He was truly his brothers’ biggest fan too. Every time he talks about songs they did there’s always such enthusiasm even decades and decades removed from their recordings. God bless the Wilson brothers.
One sad thing is that Carl and Brian had a big disagreement towards the end of Carl's life and it cost them valuable time together. One of the things was that Melinda, Brian's wife (who has something of a Yoko Ono-like reputation today), had convinced Brian to try and finish Smile, which Carl thought would only cause Brian to have another breakdown. Then, Brian had written some songs with Andy Paley for Baywatch Nights, and one of them, "Dancin' the Night Away", Carl hated with a passion and he walked right out of the recording. The record company told Brian he needed to do some better songs, and Brian blamed Carl because he thought they were some of the best he'd ever written. Brian did an interview where he called Carl "an asshole". Not long after that, Carl was diagnosed with lung cancer and they kind of put their animosities aside at that point because Carl wasn't long for this earth.
I’ve noticed that too! They always gave Brian credit, unlike their cousin, and Brian always got such a huge smile on his face whenever he was asked about their songs. He’s be like: “oh! That’s my BROTHER’s song!”
Yes, I share your sentiment. They were a very creative band and they had so much love and it's awesome that before shows and recording sessions they would pray 🙏 🤲.
Diane M. Patterson Carl WITH a beard rivaled Dennis, maybe even equaled him. But as much as I love him, Dennis definitely beat beardless Carl. That’s kinda hard to say cause I love all three brothers 😂
Hey are you me? :) Now, seriously, I like the studio version too, though this one is not bad at all. Maybe the other killer song is "Bárbara". I'm referring to the one featured in the album "Endless Harmony" (a sort of best of).
I like Dennis's voice more in here, but the harmonies I feel are best in the studio, but you can feel the raw emotion from Dennis's voice. It doesnt have the light and purity like Brian and Carl, but it has probably the most emotion between the Wilson brothers
I agree. I prefer this 1971 live version of this song, too. It's really sad the life the Wilson brothers had gone through in their youth. Murray was a horrible father. Extremely abusive towards his son's. Especially Brian. Dennis and Carl both had suffered by seeing Murray's abusive and over controlling, judgemental actions towards Brian's masterpieces he created. Murray screwed his boys over, by selling off their catalog out of spite. He was not only a horrible manager, and father. Murray caused permanent trauma they all had to deal with throughout their lives. Dennis and Carl were just as affected as Brian was. I read Brian autobiography many years ago. God Bless him for fighting his demons, and winning. The Wilson boys are Legends! David Marks has remained a Beach Boy throughout their career. He is a killer guitarist on a Fender Stratocaster for sure.
Denny and Carl sound magical together, well done Dennis for writing and performing this beautiful song - and Carl's backing vocals send shivers down my spine.
Denny and Carl were always a magical combination, sure hope they are singing together somewhere better than this mixed up, muddled up world we live in.
A life long, ardent Beach Boys fan & couldn’t agree more on your song call outs, but perhaps Dennis singing the hauntingly beautiful “Cuddle Up” and the group singing “Caroline, No” would be good runners up? 😉
"So now I'm going away, but not forever / I'm gonna love you any old way, forever." Brings a tear to my eye knowing Dennis really is gone now. This version is fantastic, he sings so soulfully and the horns sound great. RIP Dennis and Carl too, greatly missed.
What an amazing version. Stunning. Dennis was really on a roll writing really great songs during this time. Sunflower wouldn't be the masterpiece that it is without Dennis. His shining moment with the band in my opinion. I really miss Dennis....
now that the "Feel Flows" box set has been released it is easy to see that Dennis did in fact have an arsenal of songs for a solo album then if he wanted.
Joel C. Peskin that’s killer- do you have any good stories? What were the beach boys like at that time? I’m assuming Brian was probably still laying in bed at this point...
Dear Angel Boy, I wish you could have lived long enough to realize your God given talent. This song represents your heart and soul... I hope you have found the peace in death that you could not find on earth...I hope to hear you sing in Heaven one day. For Now RIP.Denny..
Same for me, Cally. And after Dennis passed away, Carl honored his brother by singing (beautifully) "Forever" during Beach Boys concerts for many years. And he always ended the song by thanking the audience and adding: "That was a Dennis Wilson song."
When I was 11, which is only about 10 years ago, I loved The Beach Boys. I wanted to be Dennis Wilson. He's possibly the biggest influence I've ever had. A beautiful, troubled soul.
Remembering you, Denny, on the saddest day in music history. Dennis Carl Wilson 12/-4/1944 - 12/28/1983. Much love to you! Always and forever my favorite Beach Boy, and Pacific Ocean Blue and Bambu are wonderful solo albums!
Dennis' version completely and utterly blew John Stamos' version away!!! Dennis had such a soulful, sensual voice. And he was very handsome, gorgeous head of Brown hair.
Denny had such a beautiful and emotive and soulful voice--even when he started sounding like Tom Waits. As a songwriter, he was arguably writing the best songs for the band by the late 1960s. And his lone solo record is still--distantly--the best solo effort by any Beach Boys member.
What an absolutely gorgeous man, and an exceptional composition. Denny, you had such a beautiful voice and soulful delivery. I just saw The Beach Boys in concert last night, and really wished that I could have seen you perform this song on stage with your brothers. It’s heartbreaking to know that you left us far too soon. Sending you love and light. I am forever grateful for the gift of you. ❤️
Dennis was the real Beach Boy. He actually blossomed as an artist in 70s and released a killer solo album. His habits caught up with him in the late 70's and he couldn't finish his second solo album, He became a wreck and died needlessly. Just a sad ending for a guy with a big heart and growing talent. His loss was truly tragic.
Dennis Wilson was such a beautiful man, in heart & soul. So very sad his demons caught up with him in the end & took him way too soon from us all 😔😢 🙏 RIP 🕯🕊 both Dennis & Carl Your both so loved & very missed by all.
I am just completely in love with Dennis, he's such an unappreciated musician. One of musics greatest, along with Carl. Just wish they were still alive really, play with the boys now. His voice is amazing in this.
Absolutely agree. I miss them. Only seen them live once and that was in 1988. Poor Dennis was already gone :-( Carl was still strong, miss him too. Still impressed that Brian continues to write music though.

I reiterate this over again. I have prayed. Not sure if helps but have tried. From a very belated fan. Know this is a public forum but this comes from a very personal view. Hope you meet him.
Can we appreciate Denny's vocals at 1:58 a little more? damn!! and that following verse with the horns makes the whole song! Not to mention the cherry on top with Carl ending the song!
Yes I've watched Carl sing Forever live in 1988 on YT several times now - he obviously had a lot of love and respect for both his brothers. I've only recently rediscovered The Beach Boys music and in particular Carl's achingly beautiful voice, got a lot of catching up to do as there's so much great stuff to listen to! I would love to see Carl sing Wild Honey live if anybody out there has any footage...?
Dennis....;) The one true surfer, til Bruce, & the most soulful of the band, by far! Pacific Ocean Blue & Bambu both had great music. POB should've been a Top Ten album IMO.
Capitol Records need to put this show on CD and include the songs they did for another TV special the next summer 'Good Vibrations from England'. Best era for the live BB's, the early 70's.
I get tears in my eyes every time I hear this song. Dennis was always my favorite Beach Boy. He was handsome, sweet, had a beautiful voice and an enormous talent. I cried the day I saw that newscast saying he died. RIP, Dennis. You may be gone from this world, but you will never be forgotten and will live on in our hearts. Forever... ❤️
If Murray Wilson wasn't so hard on his three sons, they wouldn't have had such a difficult time with each of their lives.... It's sad that instead of getting the help they needed earlier on in life, that they all dealt with the emotional pain with drugs and alcohol. They were all three gifted musically. The Beach Boys music will live on forever, as will there legacy.
I am stunned by this superbly beautiful performance! I've always loved Dennis's songs but this performance is Dennis at his peak! He was so underrated as both a singer+most especially as a songwriter. Give a listen to both "P.O.B." and "Bambu" "Forever" is an achingly beautiful song and should be a standard. Thank you for sharing yourself with us, Dennis. You and your gentle soul are truly missed.💝💝💝

Just like Barry gibb of The Bee Gees lost all three of his younger brothers
Yes, I share your sentiment. They were a very creative band and they had so much love and it's awesome that before shows and recording sessions they would pray 🙏 🤲.
Carl killing it on the backing vocals.
Especially at 2:30!!
I love them so much
Carl was the best singer in the Beach Boys and one of the premiere singers of his era. Great voice!
Martin ,Your comment is killing me .
He really was the glue of the wilson brothers, wasn’t he? Thank God he had enough resiliency to survive Murray’s abuse and still flourish
Carl's harmonies on this are just.... wowwww
I agree 100%, but I dont want to like this comment bc it's at 69
it's safe to like it now@@marlonrando9272
I love Dennis. Him and Carl were the 'secret weapons' of the Beach Boys!
Dennis under rated singer and drummer and the best looking brother as well
wasnt he also the only actual surfer in the group too? lol

Yep! The only true SURFER of the whole group
7/27/24, this is going to be my wife and I's first dance song. Shout out Dennis
you beautiful damaged soul Dennis Wilson. You will be missed forever.
Not damaged....just played his part in life......
So True.
He sings it great - I actually prefer this live version over the studio - Beautiful song - Dennis -

One of my all time favorite songs
Omg me too! 😮
This song , Warmth of the Sun and God Only Knows are among the beautiful songs ever recorded. Just my opinion folks don't frag me.
No less than Paul McCartney says God Only Knows is the greatest song he ever heard. No one's going to frag you, mate.
Don’t forget all I wanna do

A life long, ardent Beach Boys fan & couldn’t agree more on your song call outs, but perhaps Dennis singing the hauntingly beautiful “Cuddle Up” and the group singing “Caroline, No” would be good runners up? 😉
I do not disagree with this statement 👌🏻
Dennis' vocals have so much soul. They remind me a lot of Joe Cocker. All three Wilsons were such tremendous singers.
He also sounds like Doug Sahm from The Sir Douglas Quintet/ Texas Tornados.
Forever,best song Dennis ever wrote
I'd argue 'You Are So Beautiful' and 'Thoughts Of You' are in the running for number 1.
😍😍😍
