Nice to hear some of the background behind ideas. It is a crying shame that when many good ideas were thought of, the market was not ready for them and were forgotten.
Obviously, my state does not enforce any noise laws they have enacted. Mufflers are made today to make noise not reduce it. Numerous 4 cylinder asian cars go by my home daily making as much noise as nascar vehicles which have no mufflers. Nomally those vehicles would be almost silent but now sound like a F16. Same with pickup trucks which sound like racing vehicles both on the freeway and in my quiet neighborhood. Seems our legislators need to revisit the noise pollution situation.
The frequency spectrum cancellation is concept that works perfectly inside a DAW or a mixing console, but in a real environnement it doesn't do anything. It's really just the materials inside that are good sound absorbers and also the fact you don't have a direct straight pipe.
I think on most cars Mufflers and catalytic converters are fine but I don’t think a muffler should be mandatory, however I do thing Catalytic converters should be
scotty is mistaken about how a continuously variable transmission works. He says, "if you adjust the gap between the pulleys, this changes the diameter." The truth is that the diameter of BOTH pulleys needs to be changed. Two DIAMETERS (plural) are changed. The diameter of EACH pulley is changed. As the diameter of the input pulley gets larger, the diameter of the output pulley gets smaller. If the output pulley gets smaller by the same amount as the input pulley gets larger, the size of the belt can remain the same. The diameter of EACH of the 2 pulleys is not changed by adjusting the the gap between the pulleys, it is changed, in each pulley, by adjusting the distance between the 2 SIDES of the pulley. Pull the 2 sides apart, and the diameter gets smaller. Why? Because the inside surface of the pulley, where the belt rides, is V-shaped. Pull the 2 sides apart, and the belt rides lower down in the pulley, effectively reducing its diameter. Oh yea, the speed of the belt has NOTHING to do with the the arrangement of the pulleys in the CVT, or with anything that the CVT is doing. The speed of the belt is entirely dependent upon the speed of the engine that is turning the input pulley. As the pulley diameters change, the speed of the output pulley changes, relative to the speed of the input pulley. If the diameter of the input pulley is made larger, then the output pulley has to get smaller, and for every rotation of the input pulley, the output pulley turns more times, turns faster. But the belt keeps moving along at the same speed.
Scotty thank you so much for taking the time to do this! It is very interesting. You have so much knowledge! I am a big fan! I had an old 1985 Chevy C20 pickup truck, (Propane so no catalytic converter) the pipe fell off from the "Y" on the exhaust system to the muffler. So I was running around with no muffler. At the time I didn't have the money to fix it so I was going to wait a few months to get a new exhaust system.... When I got the money a month or two later I just put off getting a new muffler anyway because I was getting away with it.... When ever people complained that "I needed a new muffler!", I would reply "it has a muffler, it just doesn't have a pipe going to the muffler!"... I got away with driving a 8V Chevy pickup truck for three years no tickets, before I finally put a $1,000 exhaust system into a $1,500 truck.
Scotty i bought a 2009 Nissan altima 2.5 s with a bad transmission for $200. The car will idle and rev fine in park, also drives fine until up to operating temperature. The rpms will not go up when stopped even if the pedal is floored. Many articles say this can be fixed by replacing the stepper motor in the cvt. Any tips and tricks to get this car driving again? (194k miles, junk or fix? i’m only $250 dollars into this thing)
One time I bolted some long tube headers on a SBC and ran them with short straight pipes and glass pack mufflers. The Chevrolet was a '66 so it never had a cat other than the cats that left paw prints all over it. Those were the days when I could improvise an exhaust system in an afternoon on the cheap.
After watching this I put back my muffler because of noise pollution and air. Then I took it out because noise is better in cars because Scotty will make another vid saying why should we have mufflers.
It's always interesting to hear who owns who. We had Reeves drives on our punch presses to control the speed of the press. Now with the electronic inverters you don't see them around. Reeves, Reliance and now Baldor. Just like Hoover vacuum, then Chicago Pacific bought Hoover, then Maytag bought Hoover, then Whirlpool bought Maytag and Hoover, and now TTI owns Hoovers and Whirlpool owns Maytag.
Hey scotty speaking of loud cars, can you do a video on the harm you can cause your engine by tuning a car to backfire? Or fuel maps that dump fuel into engines as they decrease speed? Sometimes I feel like I'm getting shot at by one of these Focus St's😂
I like fiberglass packed turbo mufflers for performance. Quiet at idle and low RPM nice growl when you put your foot in it. Non fiberglass packed turbos mufflers drone too much at low RPM.
Theres nothing wrong with stock turbo or supercharged cars. They are overenginerred by the manufacturer and are designed to be reliable with the parts installed.
@@reaperactualgaming3075 Still, more pressure and more heat, more possibilities of things to go wrong. I have a factory turbo car, and no doubt if I wanted the best reliability I wouldn't of bought one with a turbo.

This had a Top Gear feel to it. Nice job!
Putting two more wheels on my ride this weekend, gotta have a Sextoauto regardless of cost.
Hey scotty speaking of loud cars, can you do a video on the harm you can cause your engine by tuning a car to backfire? Or fuel maps that dump fuel into engines as they decrease speed? Sometimes I feel like I'm getting shot at by one of these Focus St's😂
First time I hear you talking so calmly lol, or do you have a muffler fitted to your mouth too 😂
Get a life
J&R Service Center Gardner obviously you need to because you can’t take a damn joke
Pretty much the same concept was applied to the dyson fan after complaints of how loud the first generation were
With Scotty’s narration & professional video presentation I feel like I’m at the Smithsonian...well it can now be called the Scottysonian🇺🇸
I like fiberglass packed turbo mufflers for performance. Quiet at idle and low RPM nice growl when you put your foot in it.
Non fiberglass packed turbos mufflers drone too much at low RPM.
Love the format for your video, I would definitely enjoy more
Scotty Kilmer + History Guy = Great RUclips, (both great channels) keep it up, good stuff !!
well detailed in order. Very well. So well adhd kids will pay attention
I wish Scotty would have been my school teacher through out all my years, until graduation 🧐
I love your education approach.... Many people would never know why or what something does if it was not for you! Thank you Scotty!
Catalytic converters were put on forklifts in 1951 for certain closed environments
"Scotty does a crossover with PBS" 😂. I love the video though
Is there an after market alternative, adding a little more noise and stuff while adding performance???
Hey Scotty, as we know, you don’t like turbochargers, but would you buy a supercharged vehicle used?
Theres nothing wrong with stock turbo or supercharged cars. They are overenginerred by the manufacturer and are designed to be reliable with the parts installed.
No he wouldn't, for the same reasons for a turbo.
Superchargers are even harder on engines than turbos, so not for reliability haha
@@reaperactualgaming3075 Still, more pressure and more heat, more possibilities of things to go wrong. I have a factory turbo car, and no doubt if I wanted the best reliability I wouldn't of bought one with a turbo.
I think this was your best video yet. I really enjoyed the whole premise and learned a couple things! I hope you make more similar to this.
Thinking about a 2020 Ford fusion...is that a good car...reliable
