On the cars from the 70,s first thing we would do ..remove EGR..cut off the Catalytic converter’s run true dual exhaust change the distributor springs..shift kit..reroute the stock breather intake and install aftermarket air filter..few hundred dollars worth of parts would really make a difference on a GM 350 or 400.. car ..enough for a high schooler at the time
But won't removing the EGR valve in later model vehicles eat holes through your engine's pistons over time due to Spark Advance Correction taking place (since the computer thinks the valve is still there)??
Scott, my Dad had a shop in Hayward California in te late 60's and early 70's. He also drag raced. He used to charge $35. To remove the smog pump, and other pollution equipment. Used brass plugs in the exhaust manifolds. He would guarantee better gas milage and more power. He is in Heaven since 2017
Scotty..I'm a young mechanic at 24..ive been going hard fixing vehicles for 5 years now learning to fix vehicles ...and now doing serious mechanic work such as engine swaps ect.. and you give great information.. and advise ..an informed customer is a wonderful customer ... I may know some things . But .its always great getting a refreshment of certain knowledge especial from such wisdom ..that may be lost ... lol your the man and keep being awesome..and thank you!!
I had a couple cars with EGR issues. An even easier trick is to cut out a rectangular section of a soda can, loosen the bolts holding the EGR on, and slide that piece of can to cover the hole leading into the EGR. Then tighten the bolts back up and you are good to go!
@@volcaz3729 side effects are...it will throw a code for your egr not working properly and you will fail smog with it like that. But other than that, I ran it for years with no issues. It even gave slightly better throttle response.
I all ways called the EGR valve a Educated Guess Reversed, because the companies that build them don't know what they are used for just another expensive part that the car don't need, and if you ever see Burned up Grass on side of the interstate that is a broken down Catalatic converter that started the fire and some times start Forest Fires.

Thank you for explaining the EGR valve. I have just inherited my late father’s Skoda and a warning light sometimes comes up that is most likely the EGR valve and I had no idea what it was or what it did. This video has explained so much and I am no longer cautious about getting it looked at as I had previously thought it was too much expense to make my dad’s 2002 Skoda Fabia worth fixing, yet I want to keep it going as a memory to him - a truly wonderful guy and brilliant father that I owe everything to.
my old caravan always threw up the egr code and my mechanic friend told me to not even worry about it as it does not harm to the engine. since then i have always ignored that code in all my vehicles.

DeeDee, the problem is that Scotty doesn't fully understand what the EGR valve does either. I suggest you aquire your automotive education from more credible sources...
Back in the 70's we'd simply disable the EGR valve by sticking a BB in the controlling vacuum hose and then plug the hose back on. It "appeared" normal but effectively defeated the system.

When I went to buy an older used Chevy truck with a Durumax diesel in it I got a 2003 with the LB7 because it was the last year before they put the EGR system on, plus it doesn't even have a catalytic converter and I actually have an Edge Jammer Exhaust System on mine that's 4" pipe all the way down from the turbo with only a straight thru muffler on it. Even so I never have an issue passing emissions! Plus with no EGR system nothing is getting clog up with soot and malfunctioning and with no catalytic converter nothing on the exhaust system is glowing lol!
Actually EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) Valves were introduce on most US cars starting with the 1973 models, two years before the catalytic converters. Exhaust Gas Recirculation dilutes the air/fuel mixture, thus lowering the combustion temperature which in turn reduces NOx emissions. The downside was reduced horsepower and fuel economy. In 1975 when the catalytic converters were added, the EGR Valves were redesigned to circulate less exhaust, shifting much more of the NOx control to the catalyst. The EGR Valves were never used for catalyst temperature regulation.
This is partially true. In diesel engines, the EGR valve reduces midrange power and fuel economy by a small margin. In gas engines, EGR can actually improve fuel economy by reducing pumping losses at cruising load and some car companies actually used EGR valves to cruise at a lean AFR. In neither engines will EGR reduce peak power because the valve will be fully closed.
Another great video, Scotty! The EGR valve does cool things down for the catalytic converter, but it predates the old "honeycomb in a can". My '73 Plymouth Duster with the slant 6 had one (as did many other pre-EGR valve cars). Also had a habit of getting carbon buildup, so I had to remove it every so often to clean it and the passageway. Sure was an easy job with the intake and exhaust manifolds being right on top of each other.
If you take the EGR valve and Black, both of the holes, going to the intake and exhaust and then the water is not connected, will give you a check engine light or ruin your Cadillac converter

The windshield washer was even a squirt bellows on the floor next to the high-beam switch. These cars never broke down until they were totaled in an accident. Why can't we make "starter cars" today like starter houses? Give young people a break!

The catalytic converter = external combustion engine. It gets hot because of unburned fuel. The hotter it gets the more inefficient the internal combustion engine.
I have one car built in 1965 and another one that dates from 1970. I have fitted electronic ignition to both and the are simple, reliable and cheap to fix. Better looking than any modern car too.

I am all in favor of tailpipe emissions testing but CARB based rules fail you for having the wrong serial number on your catalytic converter let alone change your intake

On American cars, the EGR valves were introduced in 1973, and the catalytic perverters (not a typo) were introduced in 1975. We used to gut the perverters to reduce exhaust back pressure. With GM's, you could dump out the pellets. Those systems were crude as hell. By the late '70's, they had even the once mighty V-8 engines so stopped up, they sounded like they had asthma, wheezing and sputtering around -- no power, crappy fuel mileage. The cars from '75-'85 had few redeeming qualities. Scotty doesn't like GM, but in the mid-80's it was GM that first stepped up with the renaissance US vehicles, like the 5.0 TPI V-8 and the 3.8 Turbo SPFI that brought the fun back to motoring.
Your Celica still has EGR in the video. Maybe because you know how crappy it would run without it. Intake cams with VVT open early when computer demands it so that some of the exhaust is still in the cylinder so they achieve the same level of exhaust, inert gas as you would with an EGR so it is the same principle. Cats are supposed to run hot, manufacturers are trying hard to get them to warm up faster with new tricks. The glowing ones were plugged not due to EGR or lack of as a 3 way catalyst that takes care of NOx did not exist back in the days you speak of.
Egr has been on vehicles for longer than catalytics. Older engines used passive egr by limiting exhaust valve size, using short cam events on the ex, reducing ex port size, and using restrictive ex systems.

All you had to do on them older cars is put a bb in the vacuum line and it looks like it is connected and also GM and Ford had airtubes going to the converter from the air pump and love watching your videos and have a blessed day today 🙏
I think you just solve my problem Scotty my 85 Chevy runs good when it’s cold soon as it warms up you can’t keep it running I have new plugs new wires no cap no everything and when it doesn’t run right you can hear something some kind of an exhaust leak or at least that’s what it sounds like but it’s right up near the exhaust manifold and for a long time there’s a flap valve in the exhaust manifold that I thought was part of the problem but I’m gonna go out and plug this EGR valve off boy would be nice if that made all my troubles go away❤️🔥 You explained the operation and the failures perfectly to a T just like you’re teaching a class!
But he got it wrong. EGR purpose is to cool down combustion chamber in low load, so thermal NOx-es arent created. Catalytic converter doesn’t create NOx cause theres No O2 gas to combine with N2 gas in cat. So, scotty is nice, but he’s No oracle.
Hey Scotty I have an idea to maintain optimal oil quality for cars that use oil for hydraulic function. A dual oil supply system. One oil supplies to the variable valve timing, the hydraulic lifters, and the chain tensioner. The other supply is for the crankcase and cylinder wall. There a way that these two supplies can be separated so you can use specialty oil for the hydraulic demand elements 0w16. For the crankcase use 0w30 for long-term wear. The traditional oil change function of the crankcase oil would stay the same 3000 miles change filters. The other oil supply would be a closed separate system and be expose to the abuse the crankcase oil is subjected to. You may have long change intervals and the oil condition should be like the close system of the oil in an automatic transmission. Another technology that work well with this concept is Freevalve. Also the sumpless oil technology can also aid in developing this dual oil supply concept.
Very informational, allways herd of them, but never new what they did. Remember as a kid, Dad asking Mr. Nobble what he was doing on a car. He removed the catalytic converter and broke out the honey comb inside with a hammer and pipe and then they broke off the flap in the filler neck. Did not know at the time what he was doing it for, but it was in the 70's when leaded was being changed to unleaded gas. Also, remember fixing small wrecked cars, chevette's, vega's, honda's, ect and every one had the plastic smog bottles cracked and the smog pumps all bent up. THE GOOD OLD DAYS ~THANKS FOR VIDEO
The primary reason for EGR was to reduce NOX in the combustion chamber, which is created above 2500 deg. F. They may have reduced catalyst temperatures, but that would have just been a side benefit. Otherwise, good video!
This video was recommended to me after my garage was quoted today £720 (around 800 USD) from Honda for an original EGR valve that you can't get anywhere else, because mine is leaking and shitting up the engine. Got one second hand on Ebay £35, let's see how that goes... had I known how simple it was, I might have changed it myself.
High technology and reliability are 2 of the rarest things to find in the same place in these days, just look at apple products, fuses that don't fuse, and batteries that fuse.

Hey Scotty, I've been subscribed to you for years. I love your honest no-bull**** approach to auto repair. I have a question that you may or may not be able to answer. When I was a teenager, my dream truck was a Jeep MJ Comanche. After 30 years, I finally have one. A 1987 AMC Jeep Comanche. Price, FREE!! It is a 4.0L straight six, 4wd, and a manual trans. It only has 72286 miles on it. The fenders have a bit of rust, but the frame is solid. I needs a battery, and an ignition coil, that I can replace easily!! Problem is that this truck has sat idle for a few years, and I understand that the fuel line needs replaced. Not to mention the gas in the tank might be spoiled.. I got a budget of about $1000 to make this thing run, I want this so bad. But my gut keeps saying walk away. I would love some advice:) MM
Been there done fuel lines on a 76 Ford pickup, 77 Ford Granda, 86 Subaru wagon, and 96 Olds Cutlass Supteme. Go to the auo store or online look into the following: brake bending tool, pencil debur too, double falir kit, worm clamps, fuel line, rubber hose. Battery operated fuel siphon pump, cable ties.
We didn't make metal plates to eliminate EGR, just verified they were closed, then put a BB style ball bearing in the vacuum supply hose. The BB couldn't go anywhere and no one could tell any mod had been done!
On my old GMC Sierra, I disabled nor only the EGR, but the AIR as well. Replaced EFR with solid plate. Replaced exhaust manifolds from the AIR type to the old "log type" from a junkyard. Eventually graduated to headers and got rid of the log type manifolds (even though they were pretty decent).
If it's illegal that makes it more fun. I remember the fun days you could make your car run better by removing the vacuum line to those thngs and straight-piping the catalytic converter.
Scooters euro 2 and 3 system: are pumping extra oxigen in the exhaust. Pump works on vacuüm. IT is called secundary air system. Prevents forming NO.x, helps oxidyse CO into CO2....
Gregory Malchuk a company I worked for had this 1966 Chevy truck that I had to smog, and the air pump was locked up, so I went home took the pump apart, oiled it up broke it loose, put a belt on it , took it to a smog station and the air pump was louder then the motor, and I was wondering if it was going to lock up... the smog guy was staring at the motor probably wondering what the noise was. It Pass smog , went home and pulled the belt back off.
That's what junked my 1986 GMC Vandura. EGR valve just was junk. And I replaced the rubber gasket with a homemade aluminum gasket. Too late damage was done. Ken.

My 2001 Miata has a 1.8 liter vvt engine and only requires an OBDII code reading. No probe in the exhaust pipe. I read once that the earliest version of the Miata 1,6 liter engine, no VVT, passed California emission tests without any smog gear. Is this true I wonder? California has strict parameters.

You on some cars remove the egr , and then reinsert 180 degrees rotated and still connected electrically . Did this to a Renault Laguna 2.0 DCI and got 70miles per gallon at 80mph . Best small diesel engines used to be Renault and Peugeot , more like VAG engines now .
Great video Scotty. I wish you'd make a video that would explain to people how the auto industry, the EPA and Government Regulatory bodies make super inefficient engines ON PURPOSE to sell lots of gas and make lots of money. The EGR system was part of that still on going scam. You could show them the honda V-tec made in Japan, that they WANTED to import to the USA but weren't allowed because it got 70 mpg (that was in 1990 almost 3 decades ago). You could also explain that once a vehicle is up to speed it takes VERY LITTLE engine power to maintain that speed... and how our transmissions should be 7 or 8 speed to maximize efficiency at lower RPMs instead of rev-ing the crap out of the engine and burning lots of extra gas.... it's all a scam. I recently rebuilt my 1985 Toyota 4runner's 22RE engine. Removed the EGR system and the Air Injection System and made several modifications to the intake and exhaust sides as well as machine work to the engine. Guess what... it provided MORE POWER, MORE FUEL ECONOMY and LESS EMISSIONS... magic! AND there still isn't inspection stations here in South Carolina. Most people drive new cars anyhow so inspection stations are just a scam as well. When I lived in California, they WOULDN'T let me put a new Webber carburetor on my 85' Yota pickup... even though it was PROVEN to give better fuel economy and produce less emissions. It's too bad technology to make a superior combustion engine has been so heavily suppressed here in the USA that people think 20mpg is great LOL.... What a joke! I tried to purchase a R5 diesel engine from Germany and the Government wanted to charge me a fortune in taxes to "import" the engine. In reality, they were just trying to get their gas money up front. This engine, tuned correctly can get 80 mpg if I put it in my 85 4runner. They'll get their money one way or the other. All up front or over the next ten years.
@@billythomas4527 That's going to depend on what you'd like to do with it. The PROS: The engine will run better because you're eliminating vacuum lines, pipes and other hardware that is taking away from the power and efficiency of the engine. You're also eliminating half burnt exhaust/fuel mixture that is being recycled back through the intake and into the engine. Your intake side of the engine will stay much cleaner, free of LOTS of carbon buildup and sludge and flow much better. In theory it would also increase the life of the engine, as you are eliminating many abrasives that keep getting pumped back into the engine. CONS: This engine was DESIGNED with the EGR system, without it, it will run different. The injectors will fire the SAME amount of fuel as they did before and the rest of the computer system will NOTICE the changes in flow, both input and output and likely throw a check engine light. This can be corrected with proper TUNING. Unfortunately the introduction of computers and regulated/monitored engine systems.... makes things difficult to tune but at the same time, makes things better (more recently) as far as controlling what's going on and alerting the user if something is wrong. Mine is not tuned and runs a little rich, also throw CEL after I take off. NEW adjustable injectors would probably solve some of this. Also, some mods can be made to the O2 sensor housing so you can "trick" the O2 sensor into thinking the flow is the same as it was before... again, this can be tricky and requires time to test and tune it properly. I don't know if flashing the micro processor (computer) is something that can be done. Adjusting the TPS at various values also might prove to show significant running efficiency. Hope this info helps.

In the 1990's I "fixed" my catalytic converter in the 22REC 4 cyl. of my 1987 Toyota 4Runner with a broomstick and a hammer. Afterward, it did run better!
@benz merc did the same thing with my 91 civic, but used a crowbar instead of a broomstick. Didn't want to but it was already broken up inside to the point that it wasn't doing any good. Hoping to get a new cat on it soon but you gotta do what you gotta do lol
hey ive got the same engine do you know anything about what taking my egr valve and air injection off will do specifically for this car, not sure if its clogged but my soul purpose of getting rid of it is for better fuel eco and better power, will it do these or will it do what lots of people say and decrease my engines performance and especially fuel eco on both city and highway?
@@justincase45 , The EGR valve is very important and should be replaced every few oil changes. The closer to stock you keep the 22REC, the more reliable.

I've got an 2006 Taco with a 4 cylinder. Almost 300,000 miles on it and it still runs perfect. The only unscheduled maintenance was to replace a leaking valve cover gasket.
From ahem... experience the other effect of blanking off the EGR was really wicked pinging (pre-ignition) due to the lean mixtures that were required for emission control at the time. What I learned was that the engineers actually knew better than I did!
Use high octane fuel or put an octane booster additive in the fuel tank. Also, do a fuel system clean by adding another type of additive, that cleans out all the carbon in the engine to reduce pinging.
I'm thinking of putting an EGR blanking plate on my car, but firstly I need to get the engine cooling fan working as I've never seen it switch on even over 90 degrees
Scotty...this video on egr valves is very interesting to me because I bought a 2003 Honda Element. It's been a great car but one issue I have is ...after I was convinced I needed a techron fuel system treatment about a week later I was driving and all of a sudden my car started bucking and jerking and wouldn't rev over about 2700 rpm or there abouts. I started watching your video on the vtec solenoid valve replacement and the little "screen thingy" that needs cleaned. That seems an awful lot like the old GM electronic egr valve thing. Am I right about this? Also....I thought about this whole problem and then I decided to try redoing the techron cleaning again myself and since then I haven't had the problem...
EGR doesn’t affect convertor temps, it lowers combustion temps, keeping them below 2500 degrees where NOX occurs(green house gases). Modern engines use exhaust cam timing, taking advantage of valve overlap, for EGR effect. More efficient, but making oil changes more critical.
He's not completely wrong - a red hot converter makes NOX, and a lower combustion temp makes for a cooler converter. But yeah, EGR is to fight NOX from the combustion chamber. Along with the air pumps of the time. But also the air pumps assisted the catalytic converter, which needs a little oxygen to finish off some of the hydrocarbons.
Geoff Graham My comment is in regards to a properly tuned and well running engine. If a cat is red hot, they have issues other than EGR. In fact if a cat is red hot the EGR would be pumping super heated exhaust into the chamber. The exhaust and cat temps are much cooler than combustion temps. NOX occurs at < 2500 degrees, how long do you suppose a cat lasts at that temp, in seconds?

Yeah the EGR valve is about reducing NOx by reducing the temp in the cylinder. The reason a Cat gets too hot is because of what is happening in there, the oxidation of the HC.
This is proof that Scotty does not have a good grasp on how cars work. The egr lowers combustion chamber temps reducing the chance of predetination or known as spark knock in lean running conditions for improved fuel mileage it also reduces nox in those situation and prevents cavitation in pistons. Modern cars achieve this with variable exhaust cam timing. Converters turning red hot is due to to much o2, modern cars ecu switches between a rich and lean state to keep them performing properly. Leaded gasoline poisened (coated the Nobel metals in the substrate in converters with lead ) reducing their effectiveness.

On the cars from the 70,s first thing we would do ..remove EGR..cut off the Catalytic converter’s run true dual exhaust change the distributor springs..shift kit..reroute the stock breather intake and install aftermarket air filter..few hundred dollars worth of parts would really make a difference on a GM 350 or 400.. car ..enough for a high schooler at the time
But won't removing the EGR valve in later model vehicles eat holes through your engine's pistons over time due to Spark Advance Correction taking place (since the computer thinks the valve is still there)??

Scott, my Dad had a shop in Hayward California in te late 60's and early 70's. He also drag raced. He used to charge $35. To remove the smog pump, and other pollution equipment. Used brass plugs in the exhaust manifolds. He would guarantee better gas milage and more power. He is in Heaven since 2017

I had a couple cars with EGR issues. An even easier trick is to cut out a rectangular section of a soda can, loosen the bolts holding the EGR on, and slide that piece of can to cover the hole leading into the EGR. Then tighten the bolts back up and you are good to go!

@@decifal They were vacuum. I don't think it would make a difference, but I have never dealt with or seen an electric egr.

@@volcaz3729 side effects are...it will throw a code for your egr not working properly and you will fail smog with it like that. But other than that, I ran it for years with no issues. It even gave slightly better throttle response.

I all ways called the EGR valve a Educated Guess Reversed, because the companies that build them don't know what they are used for just another expensive part that the car don't need, and if you ever see Burned up Grass on side of the interstate that is a broken down Catalatic converter that started the fire and some times start Forest Fires.

Thank you for explaining the EGR valve. I have just inherited my late father’s Skoda and a warning light sometimes comes up that is most likely the EGR valve and I had no idea what it was or what it did.
This video has explained so much and I am no longer cautious about getting it looked at as I had previously thought it was too much expense to make my dad’s 2002 Skoda Fabia worth fixing, yet I want to keep it going as a memory to him - a truly wonderful guy and brilliant father that I owe everything to.
my old caravan always threw up the egr code and my mechanic friend told me to not even worry about it as it does not harm to the engine. since then i have always ignored that code in all my vehicles.

Back in the 70's we'd simply disable the EGR valve by sticking a BB in the controlling vacuum hose and then plug the hose back on. It "appeared" normal but effectively defeated the system.

When I went to buy an older used Chevy truck with a Durumax diesel in it I got a 2003 with the LB7 because it was the last year before they put the EGR system on, plus it doesn't even have a catalytic converter and I actually have an Edge Jammer Exhaust System on mine that's 4" pipe all the way down from the turbo with only a straight thru muffler on it. Even so I never have an issue passing emissions! Plus with no EGR system nothing is getting clog up with soot and malfunctioning and with no catalytic converter nothing on the exhaust system is glowing lol!
Actually EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) Valves were introduce on most US cars starting with the 1973 models, two years before the catalytic converters. Exhaust Gas Recirculation dilutes the air/fuel mixture, thus lowering the combustion temperature which in turn reduces NOx emissions. The downside was reduced horsepower and fuel economy. In 1975 when the catalytic converters were added, the EGR Valves were redesigned to circulate less exhaust, shifting much more of the NOx control to the catalyst. The EGR Valves were never used for catalyst temperature regulation.
But the EGR valves in modern cars do definately regulate exhaust temperature for proper emission control

This is partially true. In diesel engines, the EGR valve reduces midrange power and fuel economy by a small margin. In gas engines, EGR can actually improve fuel economy by reducing pumping losses at cruising load and some car companies actually used EGR valves to cruise at a lean AFR. In neither engines will EGR reduce peak power because the valve will be fully closed.
Another great video, Scotty! The EGR valve does cool things down for the catalytic converter, but it predates the old "honeycomb in a can". My '73 Plymouth Duster with the slant 6 had one (as did many other pre-EGR valve cars). Also had a habit of getting carbon buildup, so I had to remove it every so often to clean it and the passageway. Sure was an easy job with the intake and exhaust manifolds being right on top of each other.
If you take the EGR valve and Black, both of the holes, going to the intake and exhaust and then the water is not connected, will give you a check engine light or ruin your Cadillac converter

The windshield washer was even a squirt bellows on the floor next to the high-beam switch. These cars never broke down until they were totaled in an accident. The catalytic converter = external combustion engine.
It gets hot because of unburned fuel. The hotter it gets the more inefficient the internal combustion engine.
I have one car built in 1965 and another one that dates from 1970. I have fitted electronic ignition to both and the are simple, reliable and cheap to fix. Better looking than any modern car too.

I am all in favor of tailpipe emissions testing but CARB based rules fail you for having the wrong serial number on your catalytic converter let alone change your intake

On American cars, the EGR valves were introduced in 1973, and the catalytic perverters (not a typo) were introduced in 1975. We used to gut the perverters to reduce exhaust back pressure. With GM's, you could dump out the pellets.
Those systems were crude as hell. By the late '70's, they had even the once mighty V-8 engines so stopped up, they sounded like they had asthma, wheezing and sputtering around -- no power, crappy fuel mileage. The cars from '75-'85 had few redeeming qualities.
Scotty doesn't like GM, but in the mid-80's it was GM that first stepped up with the renaissance US vehicles, like the 5.0 TPI V-8 and the 3.8 Turbo SPFI that brought the fun back to motoring.
Yep. The EGR was added to help the catcons. My Cal-emissions Scout has an EGR but not a catcon. Didn't need the catcon because of the high GVWR.
Your Celica still has EGR in the video. Maybe because you know how crappy it would run without it. Intake cams with VVT open early when computer demands it so that some of the exhaust is still in the cylinder so they achieve the same level of exhaust, inert gas as you would with an EGR so it is the same principle. Cats are supposed to run hot, manufacturers are trying hard to get them to warm up faster with new tricks. The glowing ones were plugged not due to EGR or lack of as a 3 way catalyst that takes care of NOx did not exist back in the days you speak of.
Egr has been on vehicles for longer than catalytics. Older engines used passive egr by limiting exhaust valve size, using short cam events on the ex, reducing ex port size, and using restrictive ex systems.

I think you just solve my problem Scotty my 85 Chevy runs good when it’s cold soon as it warms up you can’t keep it running I have new plugs new wires no cap no everything and when it doesn’t run right you can hear something some kind of an exhaust leak or at least that’s what it sounds like but it’s right up near the exhaust manifold and for a long time there’s a flap valve in the exhaust manifold that I thought was part of the problem but I’m gonna go out and plug this EGR valve off boy would be nice if that made all my troubles go away❤️🔥

EGR purpose is to cool down combustion chamber in low load, so thermal NOx-es arent created. Catalytic converter doesn’t create NOx cause theres No O2 gas to combine with N2 gas in cat.
So, scotty is nice, but he’s No oracle.

Hey Scotty I have an idea to maintain optimal oil quality for cars that use oil for hydraulic function. A dual oil supply system. One oil supplies to the variable valve timing, the hydraulic lifters, and the chain tensioner. The other supply is for the crankcase and cylinder wall. There a way that these two supplies can be separated so you can use specialty oil for the hydraulic demand elements 0w16. For the crankcase use 0w30 for long-term wear. The traditional oil change function of the crankcase oil would stay the same 3000 miles change filters. The other oil supply would be a closed separate system and be expose to the abuse the crankcase oil is subjected to. You may have long change intervals and the oil condition should be like the close system of the oil in an automatic transmission. Another technology that work well with this concept is Freevalve. Also the sumpless oil technology can also aid in developing this dual oil supply concept.
Very informational, allways herd of them, but never new what they did. Remember as a kid, Dad asking Mr. Nobble what he was doing on a car. He removed the catalytic converter and broke out the honey comb inside with a hammer and pipe and then they broke off the flap in the filler neck. Did not know at the time what he was doing it for, but it was in the 70's when leaded was being changed to unleaded gas. Also, remember fixing small wrecked cars, chevette's, vega's, honda's, ect and every one had the plastic smog bottles cracked and the smog pumps all bent up. THE GOOD OLD DAYS ~THANKS FOR VIDEO

The primary reason for EGR was to reduce NOX in the combustion chamber, which is created above 2500 deg. F. They may have reduced catalyst temperatures, but that would have just been a side benefit. Otherwise, good video!

This video was recommended to me after my garage was quoted today £720 (around 800 USD) from Honda for an original EGR valve that you can't get anywhere else, because mine is leaking and shitting up the engine. Got one second hand on Ebay £35, let's see how that goes... had I known how simple it was, I might have changed it myself.
High technology and reliability are 2 of the rarest things to find in the same place in these days, just look at apple products, fuses that don't fuse, and batteries that fuse.

When I was a teenager, my dream truck was a Jeep MJ Comanche. After 30 years, I finally have one. A 1987 AMC Jeep Comanche. Price, FREE!!
It is a 4.0L straight six, 4wd, and a manual trans. It only has 72286 miles on it. The fenders have a bit of rust, but the frame is solid.
I needs a battery, and an ignition coil, that I can replace easily!!
Problem is that this truck has sat idle for a few years, and I understand that the fuel line needs replaced. Not to mention the gas in the tank might be spoiled..
I got a budget of about $1000 to make this thing run, I want this so bad. But my gut keeps saying walk away. I would love some advice:)

Been there done fuel lines on a 76 Ford pickup, 77 Ford Granda, 86 Subaru wagon, and 96 Olds Cutlass Supteme. Go to the auo store or online look into the following: brake bending tool, pencil debur too, double falir kit, worm clamps, fuel line, rubber hose. Battery operated fuel siphon pump, cable ties.

We didn't make metal plates to eliminate EGR, just verified they were closed, then put a BB style ball bearing in the vacuum supply hose. The BB couldn't go anywhere and no one could tell any mod had been done!

On my old GMC Sierra, I disabled nor only the EGR, but the AIR as well. Replaced EFR with solid plate. Replaced exhaust manifolds from the AIR type to the old "log type" from a junkyard. Eventually graduated to headers and got rid of the log type manifolds (even though they were pretty decent).

Scooters euro 2 and 3 system: are pumping extra oxigen in the exhaust. Pump works on vacuüm. IT is called secundary air system. Prevents forming NO.x, helps oxidyse CO into CO2....

Yep, Ford went with an air pump setup, they called it a "thermactor pump".
Gregory Malchuk a company I worked for had this 1966 Chevy truck that I had to smog, and the air pump was locked up, so I went home took the pump apart, oiled it up broke it loose, put a belt on it , took it to a smog station and the air pump was louder then the motor, and I was wondering if it was going to lock up... the smog guy was staring at the motor probably wondering what the noise was.
It Pass smog , went home and pulled the belt back off.
That's what junked my 1986 GMC Vandura. EGR valve just was junk. And I replaced the rubber gasket with a homemade aluminum gasket. Too late damage was done. Ken.

My 2001 Miata has a 1.8 liter vvt engine and only requires an OBDII code reading. No probe in the exhaust pipe. I read once that the earliest version of the Miata 1,6 liter engine, no VVT, passed California emission tests without any smog gear. Is this true I wonder? California has strict parameters.

You on some cars remove the egr , and then reinsert 180 degrees rotated and still connected electrically . Did this to a Renault Laguna 2.0 DCI and got 70miles per gallon at 80mph . Best small diesel engines used to be Renault and Peugeot , more like VAG engines now .
Great video Scotty. I wish you'd make a video that would explain to people how the auto industry, the EPA and Government Regulatory bodies make super inefficient engines ON PURPOSE to sell lots of gas and make lots of money. The EGR system was part of that still on going scam. You could show them the honda V-tec made in Japan, that they WANTED to import to the USA but weren't allowed because it got 70 mpg (that was in 1990 almost 3 decades ago). You could also explain that once a vehicle is up to speed it takes VERY LITTLE engine power to maintain that speed... and how our transmissions should be 7 or 8 speed to maximize efficiency at lower RPMs instead of rev-ing the crap out of the engine and burning lots of extra gas.... it's all a scam. I recently rebuilt my 1985 Toyota 4runner's 22RE engine. Removed the EGR system and the Air Injection System and made several modifications to the intake and exhaust sides as well as machine work to the engine. Guess what... it provided MORE POWER, MORE FUEL ECONOMY and LESS EMISSIONS... magic! AND there still isn't inspection stations here in South Carolina. Most people drive new cars anyhow so inspection stations are just a scam as well. When I lived in California, they WOULDN'T let me put a new Webber carburetor on my 85' Yota pickup... even though it was PROVEN to give better fuel economy and produce less emissions. It's too bad technology to make a superior combustion engine has been so heavily suppressed here in the USA that people think 20mpg is great LOL.... What a joke! I tried to purchase a R5 diesel engine from Germany and the Government wanted to charge me a fortune in taxes to "import" the engine. In reality, they were just trying to get their gas money up front. This engine, tuned correctly can get 80 mpg if I put it in my 85 4runner. They'll get their money one way or the other. All up front or over the next ten years.

@@billythomas4527 That's going to depend on what you'd like to do with it. The PROS: The engine will run better because you're eliminating vacuum lines, pipes and other hardware that is taking away from the power and efficiency of the engine. You're also eliminating half burnt exhaust/fuel mixture that is being recycled back through the intake and into the engine. Your intake side of the engine will stay much cleaner, free of LOTS of carbon buildup and sludge and flow much better. In theory it would also increase the life of the engine, as you are eliminating many abrasives that keep getting pumped back into the engine. CONS: This engine was DESIGNED with the EGR system, without it, it will run different. The injectors will fire the SAME amount of fuel as they did before and the rest of the computer system will NOTICE the changes in flow, both input and output and likely throw a check engine light. This can be corrected with proper TUNING. Unfortunately the introduction of computers and regulated/monitored engine systems.... makes things difficult to tune but at the same time, makes things better (more recently) as far as controlling what's going on and alerting the user if something is wrong. Mine is not tuned and runs a little rich, also throw CEL after I take off. NEW adjustable injectors would probably solve some of this. Also, some mods can be made to the O2 sensor housing so you can "trick" the O2 sensor into thinking the flow is the same as it was before... again, this can be tricky and requires time to test and tune it properly. I don't know if flashing the micro processor (computer) is something that can be done. Adjusting the TPS at various values also might prove to show significant running efficiency. Hope this info helps.

In Calif, the smog guys check the EGR valve with a vacuum tester.

In the 1990's I "fixed" my catalytic converter in the 22REC 4 cyl. of my 1987 Toyota 4Runner with a broomstick and a hammer. Afterward, it did run better!

hey ive got the same engine do you know anything about what taking my egr valve and air injection off will do specifically for this car, not sure if its clogged but my soul purpose of getting rid of it is for better fuel eco and better power, will it do these or will it do what lots of people say and decrease my engines performance and especially fuel eco on both city and highway?
@@justincase45 , The EGR valve is very important and should be replaced every few oil changes. The closer to stock you keep the 22REC, the more reliable.

I've got an 2006 Taco with a 4 cylinder. Almost 300,000 miles on it and it still runs perfect. The only unscheduled maintenance was to replace a leaking valve cover gasket.

From ahem... experience the other effect of blanking off the EGR was really wicked pinging (pre-ignition) due to the lean mixtures that were required for emission control at the time. What I learned was that the engineers actually knew better than I did!
Use high octane fuel or put an octane booster additive in the fuel tank. Also, do a fuel system clean by adding another type of additive, that cleans out all the carbon in the engine to reduce pinging.
I'm thinking of putting an EGR blanking plate on my car, but firstly I need to get the engine cooling fan working as I've never seen it switch on even over 90 degrees

Scotty...this video on egr valves is very interesting to me because I bought a 2003 Honda Element. It's been a great car but one issue I have is ...after I was convinced I needed a techron fuel system treatment about a week later I was driving and all of a sudden my car started bucking and jerking and wouldn't rev over about 2700 rpm or there abouts. I started watching your video on the vtec solenoid valve replacement and the little "screen thingy" that needs cleaned. That seems an awful lot like the old GM electronic egr valve thing. Am I right about this? Also....I thought about this whole problem and then I decided to try redoing the techron cleaning again myself and since then I haven't had the problem...
EGR doesn’t affect convertor temps, it lowers combustion temps, keeping them below 2500 degrees where NOX occurs(green house gases).
Modern engines use exhaust cam timing, taking advantage of valve overlap, for EGR effect. More efficient, but making oil changes more critical.
He's not completely wrong - a red hot converter makes NOX, and a lower combustion temp makes for a cooler converter. But yeah, EGR is to fight NOX from the combustion chamber. Along with the air pumps of the time. But also the air pumps assisted the catalytic converter, which needs a little oxygen to finish off some of the hydrocarbons.
Geoff Graham My comment is in regards to a properly tuned and well running engine. If a cat is red hot, they have issues other than EGR. In fact if a cat is red hot the EGR would be pumping super heated exhaust into the chamber. The exhaust and cat temps are much cooler than combustion temps.
NOX occurs at < 2500 degrees, how long do you suppose a cat lasts at that temp, in seconds?

But EGR valves predate (1972)catalytic convertors (1975). How could (adding EGR valves) have "Fixed" the first catalytic convertors then?
Yeah the EGR valve is about reducing NOx by reducing the temp in the cylinder. The reason a Cat gets too hot is because of what is happening in there, the oxidation of the HC.
This is proof that Scotty does not have a good grasp on how cars work. The egr lowers combustion chamber temps reducing the chance of predetination or known as spark knock in lean running conditions for improved fuel mileage it also reduces nox in those situation and prevents cavitation in pistons. Modern cars achieve this with variable exhaust cam timing. Converters turning red hot is due to to much o2, modern cars ecu switches between a rich and lean state to keep them performing properly. Leaded gasoline poisened (coated the Nobel metals in the substrate in converters with lead ) reducing their effectiveness.
