Prefer Amlactin. CeraVe SA lotion was moisturizing, but didn't slough my rough patches as well. I also like that the Amlactin formula is very simplified with fewer, but still effective ingredients. Think the 12 percent lactic acid in Amlactin also makes the formula more effective than CeraVe.
I've used both the I saw about a 15% improvement with the Amlactin. About a 35% improvement with the Cerave. I ended up combining the Cerave lotion with the Cerave SA body wash and got them 75% clear.
I have found that combining CeraVe SA Rough & Bumpy body wash + Amlactin Rapid Relief lotion has really been helpful to all but eradicate my KP when I use them consistently!
@@Lesaly yes, the addition of the bodywash really is a game changer. I give it acouple of minutes before I wash it off. My skin is doing so much better with just a few bumps here and there.
Thank you, so informative! I recently have this condition at 75 yrs young, on my forearms, I had it on my thighs when I was 30, at the time the dermatologiste called in all her colleagues in the office to come and look at my legs; all of them peered down at my thighs; they didn't have much info at that time, no suggestions how to deal with it. So I appreciate your video. Tomorrow I'll be going out to buy some Ceravie!!
I use a 2% SA wash, followed by the Eurcerin rough relief (urea, lactic acid, ceramides) in the morning. At night, I use verse retinol body wash. This routine has helped keep my body acne and KP at bay.
Yes, she's right. Amlactin will cause inflammation and red bumps on the face, it did it to mine. However, for the body, it works great for chicken skin, when used consistently.

I had a big bottle of Amlactin, but took 5 years to get through it because I didn't like the smell and I didn't know it was recommended for KP, just thought it was "lotion:. I have no idea why I originally bought it, but I always thought the name was wierd and reminded me of "I Am Lactating". Anyway, I wish I had known about treating KP sooner. It was torture and one of the many things my parents did that eroded my sense of self and my confidence. And for such a stupid little reason. I want to spread the word and prevent other people from being tormented for such a stupid reason.

I tried both and didn’t find them to be that effective… I just wonder why CeraVe or other widely available brands don’t develop a KP lotion with a decent concentration of glycolic acid. It’s the most effective acid I’ve tried, so far
I've started using The Ordinary 1% retinol in squalene on my arms and then a moisturiser. I'd rather know what percentage retinol I'm putting on rather than whatever is in Advanced Clinicals or paying a fortune for Paula's Choice. I'm also thinking just using their 30% AHA and 2% BHA peel on my legs before I shower for 15 minutes see what that does. Cheaper too. CeraVe SA cream does nothing much plus it's horribly thick and greasy. I can't wash it off, I'm wiping grease off my legs after a shower the next day! We can't get the lotion in Australia plus I'm cf now anyway.
9:06 I haven’t had eczema flares in several years, I was Rx’d Dr.Aron’s compound recipe for vanicream, but if I put that on BEFORE the AmLactin I was using at the time, it didn’t sting where the flare was. I have not had a flare in about three years now though (except on the back of my head, where I can’t get it to go away… it started after some chemical burns in a salon almost two years ago)
I just started using the CeraVe lotion ( its been maybe 2 weeks) and I’ve already seen results. I’m using it mainly on the back of my upper arms as well as target areas on my thighs and knees. It doesn’t sting but you can definitely feel it on the skin, it doesn’t seem to absorb completely. I don’t mind as long as it works though!
(I use both as a keratosis pilaris victim) I will say the cerave makes my forehead (Where I use it) look greasy, but it does take it off as good as Amlactin. Dr Dray, do you find that these are effective at exfoliating even though their PH level is too high for the acids to work? I’ve been reading reviews about how both products are around 5.5 ph, but the acids need a 3 to 4.5 ph range to be effective enough to actually exfoliate the skin. Those reviews instead recommended the CeraVe SA Cream in the tub because it had a lower PH over the lotion. I think a lot of this info was from the Paula’s Choice review, so do you think we have to buy a lower PH product of the exfoliation benefits are what we need rather than the moisturization?
I should've done more research before buying anything. I got the Cerave brand, but the in like a small tub container. Which after this I didn't know there was a bit of smaller version of it. I should've gotten the smaller one instead cause I don't think I will use that THAT much , $26 is a bit pricery for that product

But I know I should take the few minutes to do something for myself. Thanks, Dr Dray! I'm going to make an effort to use one of these every day. Happy Monday! I hope you have a peaceful evening. 💙
I have only tried the Cerave SA Cream, the lotion version is not available in the UK for some reason. The cream I must say was not pleasant to use, heavy and very sticky. Felt like it just stayed sitting on the skin, rather than been absorbed. I would not buy it again for sure. The SA cleanser tough is a favourite of mine, even tough the actives are on the cleanser format, I did notice an improvement on my skin. P.s.Does the same principles discussed on this video apply when talking about ingrow hairs on the legs?
The AmLactin has that sticky, tacky effect too, as well as an unpleasant scent. I switched to the Gold Bond Rough and Bumoy cream. The GB works, but definitely takes longer to see results. When I finish that I'm going to try the Cerave SA.
Would you recommend any of the “face recommended products” for a toddler’s face ? My one year old has had face kp for months. Also, there is a brand “Bubbsi” that claims to get rid of KP and baby acne. What are your thoughts?
Amlactin has mineral in it so I’ve always been hesitant to try it. I know you’re always saying mineral oil is a great ingredient for TEWL which I do have very dry skin so I’d think it’s be great for me, but whenever I use any lotions that have a base of mineral oil or it’s one of the main ingredients then I break out in what looks like a heat rash, even if it’s the middle of winter! The same thing happens with my husband and he by no means has sensitive skin. I don’t have any issues with paraffin in products or petrolatum so I wouldn’t think im allergic to it.. what could cause that to happen?
the problem i have is that although i have rough skin, most urea lotions or lotions are too rich for it.... it just doesn't pull easily. especially on the chest. its a mess.
I think one think that is major that you missed is that the Amlactin is 12% lactic acid, which is the major keratolytic. The Cerave does not disclose its lactic acid percentage but it’s like the 7th ingredient (below salicylic acid) whereas it’s the second ingredient of the Amlactin. Personally I think it’s apples and oranges. If you’ve got really awful KP, the higher percentage does a better job exfoliating. If your KP is mild and you want some of the skincare effects, then the Cerave is better. Personally as someone with pretty severe KP on my legs, Cerave didn’t cut it.
For those who find the fragrance of Amlactin off-putting, try shaking it up before use. I noticed that it says to do that on the bottle and once I started shaking it up the yucky smell was barely noticeable.
Ohhhhh I’ve been hesitating buying it. Many years ago I tried an off brand AmLactin, and I was hoping AmLactin would smell better but the comments about the smell have made me scared to try it again.
@@ctran1955 In my opinion it smells like ammonia. I just put it on before bed and eventually go nose blind. Also if you layer it with another lotion you can't smell it.
i just did that with my bottle and the smell isnt as strong compared to if u do shake it. The smell is still there but it goes away quick and its faint
Love this series Dr Dray. Here in Spain we don’t have full Cera Ve range, including that product. For now I use amonium lactacte at 12 % and urea at 20%. Sells under a variety of brand names, such as Medigel or Lactum. Just in case any Spaniard is checking your videos too 🥰
I just purchased a 20% urea gel/serum and its incredible. Have you been using both products together? Ive been an amlactin user forever, and i love exfoliation products, but dont wanna attack my skin too much. (Though it often needs it)
I absolutely love amlactin. Yes I have KP on my arms and it does help with continued usage. However I started using it on my entire body and the results are great. My skin stays hydrated and smooth and soft because of the exfoliation. I can skip shower sugar scrubs if I want. Or you can keep them. But it’s very nice over all
I prefer the AmLactin since I have kp on a large portion of my body and the cerave has a warning to not use it on large areas of the body due to salicylate poisoning.
I started using AmLactin months ago and I won’t use another body lotion for as long as I live. My KP as cleared and softened like crazy! It smells bad but you can always use perfume. Team Amlactin
How long did it take for you to notice it was clearing up? I have pretty bad KP on my arms and been using amlactin but not noticing much of a different 😭
Same. Love it. I also use versed body retinol and natural body oils. I rotate all 3. But I’m definitely team amlactin as well. And I don’t mind the smell. It eventually fades
@@StylesbyCBH are you using it daily? It does say on the bottle use twice a day. I would try that for your KP. I didn’t notice a difference at first but that’s because I wasn’t using it enough on a regular basis
Dr Dray, gurrrlll, I cant thank you enough for your effort to share transparent, effective, affordable advice. Also and most important I’m grateful and heart-warmed for your help with my picking disorder that had gotten worse during quarentine. I messed up my skin so bad and your videos really saved me from the compulsion to mess it even more. Now I’m in control, seing a derm and never giving my sunscreen a rest. Much love, Juliana Brasil loves u 🇧🇷
Shame that neither of these products are cruelty free. I know there are people who do not care about that but many others do. Shame in 2022 companies are still testing their products on defenseless animals.
Great video! Does this apply to “strawberry legs” as well? I have them and never feel comfortable enough to wear shorts because of it. But it’s never bumpy. Wanted to see if these lotions would also with strawberry legs🍓
I used Amlactin over winter and noticed a HUGE improvement in my ‘strawberry’ legs. I used weaker (daily) then switched to stronger (rapid repair) version. Only thing- initially smells a little like sour milk. 😮 (Also have used Cerave & Eucerin lotion w high urea content)
@@cariep1983 So the smell went away for u after a while b/c that has been my issue with Amlactin daily in the past. Did it take a few days or longer as your skin got accustomed to the treatment?
I really only noticed the first few times using & worried that everyone would think I spilled milk on my lap. But it didn’t stick around & none of my 4 kids have complained that “Mom smells”. 😂 Also, the dark/tough spots on my knees (from being w aforementioned kids) are much lighter & softer.
@@DrDrayzday I think I have the same issue but I'm it doesn't bother me because it's been there since birth and my Mom and my sister also have it. It looks just like KP but its not bumpy or raised off the skin. It's like everyone of my hair follicles on my legs are darker and looks KPish but its not rough or bumpy...still smooth but looks like kp.
I really love Alpha body lotion. It contains alpha hydroxy acid and it stated how much! It makes my bumpy, dry skin so smooth. The only thing is that I definitely need to apply at night as wearing it during the day makes my skin more sensitive to sun.
I alternate between SA, urea and lactic acid body lotions. I sometimes combine all three at the same time. I just get a squirt from each bottle. LOL. P.S. Cerave’s SA Smoothing Cream contains all three ingredients but in lower concentrations.
CeraVe list a lot of nice ingredients, but don't mention the amount. If it were an effective amount, don't you think they'd mention it on their packaging like AmLactin, who put theirs front-and-center?
Personally, I love the Eucerin product with Urea as I find it just wears better on me. The feel is a little nicer and it’s fantastic. Just like the Zeroid facial cream. LOVE ! Have a great day and thanks for another great vid. See ya later. Rick

QUESTION ? I am using the CeraVe Sa Lotion and did notice an improvement in lower leg skin rather quickly ( about 10 days). I was concerned that the label mentioned not to use the cerave over large areas of the body ? Is it toxic ? I used on the lower leg and top of thigh. Thank you Dr Dray
Amlactin has been great for me and it really improves my skin with continued use. Its the 12% lactic acid that is the most beneficial for my kp and dry skin
I tried that one because of budget lol The Amlactin definitely is worth the investment. Could be because my skin seems to really like lactic acid anyway. It lasts a bit longer than the gold bond too.
I may be jumping the gun at 3:46 to say this, but wouldn’t the SA be redundant, since I already use a body wash with 2%SA in it, for my KP skin? I only recently started using AmLactin’s Intensive Healing lotion, and it’s actually working better than the 10% Rx lotion I’ve been using. I wish there was a high retinol body lotion, since it’s the only thing that’s ever fully helped mine. I’m hoping to get electrolysis, because mine causes severe scarring abscesses, and I’m desperate at this point 😬
This is SO relevant for me in the moment. I am just finishing my bottle of Cerave SA, and bought a bottle of the same Amlactin you’re using here!! I am starting to use the Amlactin, but I don’t like the smell of it. I think over all, I like the Cerave better. Thanks for this video. Keep comparing, please! I like these!
Hi there. I hated the smell too…at first. Then I read the bottle (😂😊) & it says to shake well before use. So I started doing that and the yucky fragrance is greatly reduced.
I just made my husband a lab rat. I have both products and the amylactictin blue label. I will update but cereve immediately absorbed into his right side while the amlactin took way longer to rub in. I covered both sides of his body with petroleum jelly. I will update as to which side is more hydrated but I liked that the cerave soaked in way faster. I only put on his body. Not face.
Yes, Amlactin did sting when I used it on my body previously - uncomfortable. I do need something for my legs, especially the shins (dry area), which is why I will get the CeraVe SA Lotion in the future. At the moment, I'm just using CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion for that area (along with sunscreen).
I have not tried the amlactin but can say I’ve been using the cerave SA for about a year now. Using the neutrogena body clear scrub and the cerave SA lotion has gotten my KP well under control. I alternate products so I’m not using them both in the same routine.
I've used both the Amlactin lotion and CeraVe's SA cream in the tub. I prefer the CeraVe because it works well and the odor of Amlactin is strongly like Elmer's glue. I couldn't get past it. :-( It probably works great but I hated the smell of it. CeraVe's SA cleanser is also great for dry, rough skin. :-)
I sometimes use Amlactin on my face after I saw it in one of your videos. My face always feels so much softer the morning after. I can't overdo it, though. Made that mistake once and ruined my skin barrier 🙊 I use it once a week at most.
hello Dr. Dray! My 13 year old daughter has very red kp all over her cheeks and upper arms! Every time she uses product her face turns red, including the cera ve product used in the video. Can you recommend any products for her face? to cure redness, and bumps? If not, do you work in LA? Or near there? Thanks, Molly
Weirdly in the UK cerave SA smoothing lotion has a totally different ingredient list without ammonium lactate but urea and niacinamide 🙄. It's a fantastic product though!
That's because the American version contains 3% salicylic acid, which is considered unsafe by UK regulations. Salicylic acid in skincare products absorbs into the blood and can cause salicylate poisoning in high doses, so the UK and EU both restrict salicylic acid in body moisturisers to 0.5%.
@@rubysresource OMG! This explains why i always get abdominal cramps the moment i use salicylic acid i thought it was all in my head. Have tried the 2% don’t know if a lesser amount will give me the same effect
I'm a pharmacist in the EU, and we make even 5% ASA cream, which you can get without prescription. (In a different country, but EU rules should apply the same way, so I think the law is different)

I like both of these products. I just wish CeraVe was cruelty free.
PLEASE do a video about "strawberry legs."
i have one
Thank you for this video! 💝
Could you do cerave SA lotion vs cream? Creams ingredients is a bit different
you should review the skin savers carea cream!
Can you review PCA Skin (for anti aging) and Face Reality (for acne)? Thanks!!
Hello Dr Drey can you use the Cerave one if you have eczema? Cheers from Australia
Would you recommend any of the “face recommended products” for a toddler’s face ? My one year old has had face kp for months.
Also, there is a brand “Bubbsi” that claims to get rid of KP and baby acne. What are your thoughts?
Can I use the amlactin for my 8 and 10 year old kids?
i just started AMLACTIN few weeks ago it is good for kp but it is smelly , haven't tried CERAVE yet
The bottle of Amlactin I have must be old, it contains mineral oil and parabens.
I don’t have any issues with paraffin in products or petrolatum so I wouldn’t think im allergic to it.. what could cause that to happen?
the problem i have is that although i have rough skin, most urea lotions or lotions are too rich for it.... it just doesn't pull easily. especially on the chest. its a mess.
Can we use both ?
Kuvalis Harbor
Could you please talk about The Ordinary’s new lash and brow peptide serum?
She's not a fan of lash serums. I'd check Gothamista's video.
Can you use it on neck? Also can you mix it with a retinol lotion?
I bought Amlactin and it smelled horrible. Anyone else?
My issue with Amlactin is that it smells weird ...
Thanks!
I could never find CeraVe SA or Amlactin in my country, so I took my chances with a generic brand (Major 12% Amonium Lactate). Let's see how it works!
Loving that new series of "one product vs another". Have a great day Dr. Dray 🙂
Thank you! You too!
@@DrDrayzday Thanks for the reply.
@Amber Maillet Yes. There are just so so many skincare products & each day new products are launching.
Love the VS vids also!
Personally as someone with pretty severe KP on my legs, Cerave didn’t cut it.
yes CeraVe didn't do anything for me neither...
Understood, thank you! 😍🥰👏🏽
Thanks for the review
👏
Thankyou for sharing!
For those who find the fragrance of Amlactin off-putting, try shaking it up before use. I noticed that it says to do that on the bottle and once I started shaking it up the yucky smell was barely noticeable.
I just use this tonight for the first time and was like wth. It smells terrible, I hope the shaking helps because I can't do stinky smells.
The smell is still there but it goes away quick and its faint
shake or no shake, ..still smells like ammonia 😵🤢. worked for a few weeks on ny arms then stopped? and Cera ve is overrated imo
Love this series Dr Dray. Here in Spain we don’t have full Cera Ve range, including that product. For now I use amonium lactacte at 12 % and urea at 20%. Sells under a variety of brand names, such as Medigel or Lactum. Just in case any Spaniard is checking your videos too 🥰
Next time I'm in Spain I'll check them out.
Always the products you want that are missing, am I right?
We got the SA wash and lotion in Germany, but I want the SA bar soap!
Thank you Elena, I always check comments for European versions, Cerave especially, in my case Spain too.
Graciaaaasss estaba buscandolo 😭😭😭
I just purchased a 20% urea gel/serum and its incredible. Have you been using both products together? Ive been an amlactin user forever, and i love exfoliation products, but dont wanna attack my skin too much. (Though it often needs it)
I find that the CeraVe SA Lotion works great on my sensitive skin. I swear it has been what has helped clear up my back acne. Love that product!
It is a great one
This 👏
CeraVe made my skin turn dark on my forehead. I know it sounds stupid but I noticed it when I started using the product so I stopped
For your back, try dry brushing. I was initially doing it just to improve blood flow, but inadvertently cleared up my back.
@@frozengamer3030 did you wear sunscreen daily?
I absolutely love amlactin. Yes I have KP on my arms and it does help with continued usage. However I started using it on my entire body and the results are great. My skin stays hydrated and smooth and soft because of the exfoliation. I can skip shower sugar scrubs if I want. Or you can keep them. But it’s very nice over all
I prefer the AmLactin since I have kp on a large portion of my body and the cerave has a warning to not use it on large areas of the body due to salicylate poisoning.
Taking 10g collagen daily has made an enormous difference in my lifelong kp
For me the Cerave didn’t work as well. I definitely prefer the amlactin one.
@@elettramia6380hello may I ask if you only use amlactin to clear your kp or do you corporate it with sth else ?
Dr Dray, gurrrlll, I cant thank you enough for your effort to share transparent, effective, affordable advice.
Also and most important I’m grateful and heart-warmed for your help with my picking disorder that had gotten worse during quarentine. I messed up my skin so bad and your videos really saved me from the compulsion to mess it even more.
Now I’m in control, seing a derm and never giving my sunscreen a rest.
Much love, Juliana
Brasil loves u 🇧🇷
Shame that neither of these products are cruelty free. I know there are people who do not care about that but many others do. Shame in 2022 companies are still testing their products on defenseless animals.
these products are not tested on animals
Great video! Does this apply to “strawberry legs” as well? I have them and never feel comfortable enough to wear shorts because of it. But it’s never bumpy. Wanted to see if these lotions would also with strawberry legs🍓
hard to know what people mean by strawberry legs, if they are talking KP or pigmented purpura...i have videos on both
I used Amlactin over winter and noticed a HUGE improvement in my ‘strawberry’ legs. I used weaker (daily) then switched to stronger (rapid repair) version. Only thing- initially smells a little like sour milk. 😮
(Also have used Cerave & Eucerin lotion w high urea content)
@@cariep1983 So the smell went away for u after a while b/c that has been my issue with Amlactin daily in the past. Did it take a few days or longer as your skin got accustomed to the treatment?
I really only noticed the first few times using & worried that everyone would think I spilled milk on my lap. But it didn’t stick around & none of my 4 kids have complained that “Mom smells”. 😂
Also, the dark/tough spots on my knees (from being w aforementioned kids) are much lighter & softer.
Do you use it every night or every other?
I alternate between SA, urea and lactic acid body lotions. I sometimes combine all three at the same time. I just get a squirt from each bottle. LOL. P.S. Cerave’s SA Smoothing Cream contains all three ingredients but in lower concentrations.
Ah, that's why it's garbage then. I hate the stuff but it's all we can get in my country. So thick and greasy too.
CeraVe list a lot of nice ingredients, but don't mention the amount. If it were an effective amount, don't you think they'd mention it on their packaging like AmLactin, who put theirs front-and-center?
Just started this video, really excited to learn. I have been using the Costco-sold AmLactin for 10 years now.
Personally, I love the Eucerin product with Urea as I find it just wears better on me. The feel is a little nicer and it’s fantastic. Just like the Zeroid facial cream. LOVE ! Have a great day and thanks for another great vid. See ya later. Rick
I use both! 😃
I love the Eucerin product too.
hi can i ask what the name of the eucerin product is? ty
@@nananyangii Eucerin Intensive Repair Very Dry Skin. I actually use it lightly on my Face a couple times a week (not under eyes). It's wonderful for neck, arms, decollette', legs, etc. Update: see below for the correct name of the product I use.
@@franameri6590 thanks! does it soak into the skin right away? the eucerin lotion i have right now is very sticky and stays tacky on the skin which i dont like
I’ve used cerave for my KP, it made my skin super smooth and got rid of the bumps but it didn’t do much for the dark pigments of the bumps.
I prefer Eucerin Roughness Relief. It really helped both of my boys with kp. We have Cerave as well and like it, but the Eucerin is so good.
That’s my favorite moisturizer!
I did recently start using the Amlactin 15% on my arms and backs of my hands to reduce hyperpigmentation. I think I’m already seeing improvement.
Thank you, Dr. Dray!
What washes or soaps do you use for them prior to application?
@@davyjones2032 Vanicream Gentle Face Wash for Face. For Body, Aveeno Restore Gentle Wash or just any gentle fragrance free soap bar
@@franameri6590 thank you! I've bought Keratone KP off Amazon but that was before I tried to use more than regular lotion. I'll try your recommendation
@@davyjones2032 Honestly , I just use the Cerave cleaning bar or the Eucerin bar if I can find it.
I love AMLACTIN !!! It has my skin looking extra smooth.
Does it brighten skin too?
@@_danila5185good question
Gold Bond Rough & Bumpy should be compared. It's more affordable than Amlactin and has SA as well.
I don’t like that, it pills
@@elainekellogg6345 dead skin
@@resamiller66 umm no
I tried that one because of budget lol
The Amlactin definitely is worth the investment.
For the record I’ve used the Cerave lotion as a facial moisturizer and it has worked wonders!
Same!
Do you have acne prone oily skin and did you experience irritation?
@@cwcg4991 yes to the acne part, no to the irritation.
Same.
I think Alba botanical has a moisturizer with SA in it. I love their lotions.
I think Alba botanical has a moisturizer with SA in it. I love their lotions.
Only if u have cuts, otherwise it doesn't burn
Cerave SA lotion has parabens, Amlactin does not.
All I need to know about which brand cares more about their consumer.
Amlactin clear winner.
Love your videos and they’re super informative. Would you tell if eucerin advanced repair lotion is better than these for KP?
@@DC-pr2bq Yeah, it's very off-putting. :-P
Agreed, but it dissipates quickly. I’ve noticed that scent with some other products containing lactic acid.
CeraVe SA cleanser is amazing for gentle exfoliation!! No more scrubs for me 🚫
I’ve tried both of these and Gold Bond Rough&Bumpy. And the CeraVe SA bar soap. Nothing helps. 👎🏼
Maybe you don't have KP, but something else instead? Folliculitis ("fungal acne") sometimes looks like KP. Have you seen a dermatologist?
I sometimes use Amlactin on my face after I saw it in one of your videos. My face always feels so much softer the morning after. I can't overdo it, though. Made that mistake once and ruined my skin barrier 🙊 I use it once a week at most.
YESS!!! This video is for kp arms. Thanks Dr, Dray. 😁😁😁😁
thanks for watching
hello Dr.
