I used to get recipes off your website all the time for years because my mom is Korean but sadly passed away 15 years ago (last week as a matter of fact) without ever teaching me her recipes. I just discovered your YT channel today and I'm hooked! I may stay up all night catching up on all of them!!!! You remind me a lot of her, always happy and making jokes. And the accent of course. Thank you so much for sharing your recipes. 💕💕💕
i love the fact that BREAD in Korea is ppang ... it makes me realize that the whole earth and all its peoples and countries and languages are TOTALLY the SAME. Bread -- pan (Spanish), pain (French), pane (italian), pa (Catalan), pâine (Romanian) ... and it goes on and on in every language anyone can figure words out, based upon sentence context. I love it!
Not all just the most with latin origin - In Greek we say ψωμί read as : psaumi /psomi, meaning bread . This type of cornbread we name it bobota (though not sure if it's a Greek origin word ) but it was the main bread/cake/dessert during world wars, referred to as the"bread of the poor" !! Variations are with cheese/salty or with sweet with honey and raisins .
Hi everybody! Thank you for your nice comments and questions! Check out the recipe and tips plus more stories about this bread here. www.maangchi.com/recipe/oksusu-ppang
I like to make this also, but I add a can of corn or a cup of frozen corn to it to make it even more corn flavor! Sometime I even add a can of corn and a can of creamed corn. I love it too.
Oh! THANK YOU!!!! :D My mum talked about eating the EXACT SAME corn bread at her school when I was growing up. She said it was not long after the Korean war had ended and children were starving. So many kids coming to school minus lunches...and so, to feed the kids, with the corn meal donations from the US, these breads were made and distributed. Mum was from a relatively wealthy family, so she always had lunch...yet she said she was most happy when she could swap her lunch for these corn breads&eat them instead, like most of her classmates. It happened so long ago yet, she remembers eating these corn bread like it was yesterday. I ALWAYS wanted to make some for her, but I was never sure of the recipe. Now I can make some for her when I go to visit her in few weeks. She will be so happy!!! Can't wait! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
ThAnks sooo much marvellous Maangch!! My son has just been diagnosed with gluten allergy & most of the gluten free breads are dry ...terrible & expensive!!! He will LUV this bread!!! You've saved us maangch!! Luv your channel!! 💜xxx
I hope your son likes the bread! Please follow the directions in the recipe. You should use stone ground yellow corn meal that I posted the photo in the recipe. Good luck! www.maangchi.com/recipe/oksusu-ppang
I love cornbread but I don't have eaten it often cuz I don't find a really good one. Cornbread it's a emotional memory for me. My granny used to make cornbread and baked them in a clay oven so they remained fresh for a long long time. We used eat it with whipped molasses cane on it. Here where I live cornbreads are much appreciated but now they are no longer handicrafted and contains a lot of wheat flour so the corn flavor is not that evident. I loved your recipe, it is simple, visually wonderful because of its color, appetizing for its texture and very soon I will know exactly how it tastes. I intend to make this bread tomorrow because fortunately I have a cornflour package in my pantry. Thank you for this wonderful recipe that feeds not only our body but brings back so many emotions and precious memories.
Garry Perkins Sorry, I don't have it. I was just a little child and back then I was not interested in anything but eat that bread. I rebember the bread was black outside as if it as totally burned but under the crust there was a tasty and wet cornbread. I don't know why but mommy never bake that kind of cornbread.
+Maangchi I am of Creole Decent ( Native American, French Etc.) and this is at least 7th recipe very similar or identical to some of our southern recipes. It is how I found your channel. I was looking for a recipe my mom used to make and I forgot a few ingredients. So I look them up on you tube and I see your recipes. I realize they were similar but with more healthy ingredients in some. Instead of using milk we use buttermilk and instead of baking powder we use all purpose flour. I try it your way and I like the yours better because it is more healthy. Thank you for bringing such beautiful memories of home back to me. Now I can share with my children, keeping family recipes going. I am now older and have a few health issues such as diabetes. As I grow older and being born in Michigan not Louisiana as my sisters, I forget some traditional recipes. My Husband is Italian and learning new recipes, I forgot how to cook some childhood recipes. Your funny and me and my family watch you often. I had forgotten at times how to enjoy cooking and how to make it a family fun event. Again Thank you for the reminder. We love you and can not wait to watch your new videos.
+Maangchi All over the southern US cornbread and other foods from cornmeal are traditional. One thing you can do to get a nice crust on the outside of your cornbread is to heat the pan with the butter in the oven before you pour in the mix. Don't let the butter burn just get it melted and hot. It will make a crunchy yummy crust on the outside of the soft bread. You could also take your mixture and fry it like a pancake. My mother loves these, we call them hoe cakes.
Good morning everybody! Many people said that they already miss my old measuring spoons! so funny!! : ) But I feel warm because I think you guys and me are connected to each other even via my measuring spoons! I'm usually not a keeper but this time I should change my mind to keep them for a while for you guys. Until when? Until I change my mind again. The bottoms of each spoon is not smooth and they look a little sticky because I wash them with my dishwasher.
Thank you for all of your recipes. I was curious as to whether you have a recipe using fresh smelt for soups or maybe a meat dish for rice with veggies. Thank you again for your recipes and your time. ~ Aubrey.
Hey all, if you're lactose intolerant, replace the milk with coconut milk and replace the butter with oil (I used coconut oil instead of vegetable oil for the recipe and to oil the pan). Came out perfect! I used the brown coconut kind of oil so that the coconut flavor doesn't come out in the cornbread. If you only have young coconut oil and/or milk, you'll taste the coconut. It's still amazingly tasty though. Thank you Maangchi! This was delicious!
Who knew ( probably many) knew Koreans made cornbread in Korea!!! I always thought it was an American adaptation by some British immigrant in the beginning. Lol I d love to hear more about the true history of language and food, like where and when India started cooking with curry, I always thought that was an India thing that others copied. ❤️ I love that she adds all the translations. I d love to make her the all BUTTER recipe. She seems like such a sweet person. I can't wait to try this gluten free recipe. Very clean cuts to serve to company. She could add no-flour or gluten free to her title and increase her viewers.
If I am feeling down all I have to do is watch one of your videos and it is like the sun has come and the birds are singing!!! Thank you so much for sharing your light!!!!!
This is awesome! We make a version of cornbread here in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Everyone down here eats this all the time and it's really cool to see that all the way across the world, people are eating something incredibly similar! We never make it without our 100 year old cast iron skillet though 😺 Love you Maangchi!
For years I have been trying to get this consistency when I make a cornbread but never did. I tried this recipe and it worked. However, I did not have the brand of cornmeal you suggested but used a very fine grain cornmeal. I also had to put in extra milk to get it to the consistency you had. It worked though. I also added a little vanilla and nutmeg to kick it up a notch. Thanks Maangi.
So maybe a couple of weeks ago I looked up cornbread recipes and today this was in my recommended list. I smiled all the way through, what a happy little home chef you are! I'm definitely going to try it and I'll be back for more.

Whoa, it's really a small world! We here in the Southern states eat cornbread too! Its part of foods we call "Soul Food". The cornbread that I'm used to is not sweet at all and is traditionally made in a cast iron skillet. For some reason, store brands of cornbread mix( read Jiffy) are really sweet. Its served with literally anything like chicken, meatloaf, beef stew, chili, etc.Anyway, I this recipe looks good and I will try it out. Thanks for uploading! :)))
i totally relate! in opinion, it tastes great sweet with collard greens or black eyed peas, mac and cheese, and fried chicken with a glass of sweet tea.
Thanks & God bless you for this easy, delicious corn bread recipe. I've made twice. The best part is, no white flour and less ingredients. Thanks again.
When I was a kid, my mom used to tell me that she had this corn bread at her elementary school. I think my mom and Maangchi are about the same age! :) I will make this bread for my mom! And thanks for the tip 직구!
I Am not a kitchen person but I Love to eat.making me lost inside a kitchen and makes all the cooking utensils ran away literally from me makes me lost all interest in cooking.but after viewing ur posts, the twisted donuts and cornbread,I find my interest in cooking perks up.U made it so simple and fun! Plus no special cookery equipments that are so intimidating! Thank u and I will definitely try this two recipes on my next weekend holiday.
Sorry I'm not good at English. I'm From Turkey. In this video-made corn bread you have. Turkey is eaten too. Yogurt is also our one of our country's food is Yogurt, and Corn bread delights me to see. Thank You Maangchi. I love ur video ı love u
I usually add flour to my corn bread like most Americans do but i’m Going to try this recipe the next time I make corn bread. This is real corn bread! 😊
I love this video! I baked a pan of corn bread last night, using this recipe with one extra table spoon of sugar (Coz I like it sweet) and it turned out to be so good! Even though it was my very first time baking corn bread, was super easy, quick and yummy. I will definitely bake it more often. Thank you!
Garry Perkins It's really rather simple. Use whatever chili you and your family like. Make the cornbread batter like Maangchi did (Maybe without the sugar if you don't want it sweet) Put the chili in a casserole dish sprinkle some cheese on top (we use velveta sometimes because it's creamier) then pour the cornbread batter on top, bake until the cornbread is done. Serve with sour cream.
my dear your happiness is contagious .I love the way you talk about your children and the good old days of your younger yesterday years. you make cooking and art that is a feast to all the senses.your videos are laced with subtle humour and presented with love
OMG! My grandson #1 is going to flip! He is a cornbread nut! And he loves my scalloped corn too. Gotta save this and give it a go for him. Thankyou! PS that breakfast looks so good. Wish I COULD join you lol!😍💇🇰🇷🇺🇸🌽🍓☕🍵
Correction, it can be used for adults too depending on locale and culture. For example, in the Philippines, it is often used to describe many things including adults. I know this from when I visited Manila to meet with my fiancé.
Im from South Africa here we also eat corm bread love it thanks for recipe Maangchi I love to look at your videos you are a very good cook love you Lurene Traut
I use white cornmeal, half buttermilk/half milk. No sugar. I mix everything but the milk and let it sit while my cast iron skillet heats with a couple tablespoons of oil. When my skillet is screaming hot, I add the milk and pour into the skillet, it hisses. Then you get a nice crunchy crust, super moist interior and so delicious. Great with so many meals.

I am from the south in the United States and many of us are very particular about our cornbread. Don't tell my mom, but this is the best cornbread I've ever had!! LOL The texture and the flavor are pure bliss. I paired mine with a freshly-made honey butter. Yum!
I just discovered your channel yesterday and I truly appreciate your sense of humor. You make cooking very easy. I have guests coming on Saturday and I plan making the cornbread. I will keep you posted . Thank you for sharing your gift with mankind
I'm 59 love no sugar cornbread. I knew the milling process had changed and I thought I wasn't making good cornbread. No flour is needed and no sugar. Increase the baking soda add egg baking powder. Add oil/butter let sit. Bake. Perfect!
I'm a Westerner, and our tradition is to make a sweeter style of cornbread that my Tennessee grandma would probably call "corn cake." I like making cornbread to eat with a big pot of ham and beans.
Thank you so much for this corn bread recipe. My cornbread always crumbles and my husband doesn't like that. So now I will be making your recipe for the perfect cornbread! Thank you Maangchi, I love you!
Thanks so much for this great recipe, I love how you let it soak for 20 mins before adding baking powder and baking. I love to learn about Korean culture because of BTS.
I love the idea of soaking the corn and letting it swell and thicken a little bit. I just found you on RUclips and I love your food, your style of cooking and your happiness is contagious. Thank you from Down Under.
Ah, that's so awesome! I'm from the southern US, and my father always made this food when I was young. I've always associated cornbread as a southern US food. I didn't even know it was eaten in Korea! I've never let the batter soak though - that's a great idea. I'll have to try it next time!
Maangchi, i loved your cornbread video! I am from the southern USA, and cornbread was a regular thing. Mom didnt use any sugar and the milk was always buttermilk. I love to cut it immediately out of the oven and split a piece and put a slab of butter in it to melt. So yummy!
Super cute video! Your cornbread recipe is very similar to the cornbread I grew up eating in the southern part of the USA. I know sweeter corn breads are popular, but that was never how my family and I ate it. I always love seeing similarities ( as well as differences) between cultures! Keep cooking! I love your videos!
What's the temperature?

And it's called Pav in India.
According to the dictionary, "ppang" was a loan word from the Portuguese pão!

The Irish word for bread is arán, the English word is bread, and the Polish word is chleb
All ROMANCE languages have that pan- thing going for them

When I was a kid, my mom used to tell me that she had this corn bread at her elementary school. I think my mom and Maangchi are about the same age! :) I will make this bread for my mom! And thanks for the tip 직구!
Happy New Year!

Thank you for your nice comment! Happy cooking
Lol @ 8:33 "Soft, fluffy, cooorney." I
I start like her cooking program so much...look clear..simple&easy to follow her instruction...💖💖💖💖💖
Letting your corn meal mix, pancake mix even cake mix sit lets the air bubbles out. Making it smoother and yes fluffier. It's good you shared that! :D
You are the first one who say to soak it, I totally agreee, I noticed when I let it soak it gets so fluffy , I’m happy I came across your video!
Sorry I'm not good at English. I'm From Turkey. In this video-made corn bread you have. Turkey is eaten too. Yogurt is also our one of our country's food is Yogurt, and Corn bread delights me to see. Thank You Maangchi. I love ur video ı love u

I love this video! I baked a pan of corn bread last night, using this recipe with one extra table spoon of sugar (Coz I like it sweet) and it turned out to be so good! Even though it was my very first time baking corn bread, was super easy, quick and yummy. I will definitely bake it more often. Thank you!
👏
Maangchi love you
Love you u so sweet
I find myself making cornbread a lot in the cold months. Our family enjoys it with chili. :)
My family too! It's the perfect time for chili and cornbread!😊
It's really good if you make chili and pour it in a casserole dish, and then put cornbread batter on top and bake it.
Sooo good.
Garry Perkins It's really rather simple.
Use whatever chili you and your family like.
Make the cornbread batter like Maangchi did (Maybe without the sugar if you don't want it sweet)
Put the chili in a casserole dish sprinkle some cheese on top (we use velveta sometimes because it's creamier) then pour the cornbread batter on top, bake until the cornbread is done.

Maangchi, you're so cute ❤
correction, cute is only use for kids & pets but not for adults.
Correction, it can be used for adults too depending on locale and culture. For example, in the Philippines, it is often used to describe many things including adults. I know this from when I visited Manila to meet with my fiancé.
Says who? The international law of Ramirez? Stop being silly and enjoy the video.
Robincat Exactly. That's what I'm trying to say. :D
Consider getting proper English lessons.
Great with so many meals.
my wife just made yr recipe and we both agree it's perfect. thanks for sharing.
Awesome!
Hi
You are fun to watch..! Love your cooking ideas..thanks for great videos..they are so yummy..!
Can I add a little thing ....my grandmama used to put actual corn kernels in the corn bread mix....your recipe looks great
That's what I was thinking, too.
omg that's right, I remember that now! thanks
lol@ 'corny'.....Maangchi you are so funny. You are precious!
: )

I am from the south in the United States and many of us are very particular about our cornbread. Don't tell my mom, but this is the best cornbread I've ever had!! LOL The texture and the flavor are pure bliss. I paired mine with a freshly-made honey butter. Yum!
I'm so happy to hear that you liked this recipe! Cheers!
Portuguese caption was submitted by one of my viewers! Thank you so much!
I would eat whatever Maangchi made without second thought or doubt I wouldn't even ask what it is, I'd just eat it. That's it!
I just discovered your channel yesterday and I truly appreciate your sense of humor. You make cooking very easy. I have guests coming on Saturday and I plan making the cornbread. I will keep you posted . Thank you for sharing your gift with mankind
You have the kind of energy that lights up my day ❤️
Thanks for the great cornbread recipe. I do mine in a cast iron skillet. Gives the bottom a good crust.
I like the idea of soaking your batter, I'm going to try it. Thanks for sharing.
Colleen Rose Yes, I was too excited when I found the method! It worked really nicely.
Maangchi when I watch these videos,I can tell you enjoy eating the food as much as preparing it.Nice to see
I just made this corn bread and I added an extra egg, I am so in love with this recipe.
Wonderful!
I love are her videos, she is very humorous
Never thought about letting batter soak. Will try today.Youvare very gracious, thank you.
Good luck!
Thank you so much for this corn bread recipe. My cornbread always crumbles and my husband doesn't like that. So now I will be making your recipe for the perfect cornbread! Thank you Maangchi, I love you!
You always make the best pastry love love love
I really like your style
I love you Maangchi, from Morocco to Korea and USA
I really like your recipes. Also you always bring out your recipes with sense of humour. Thank you for sharing.
Looking forward to trying this cornbread. Your beautiful personality makes this video a pleasure to watch.
