I am in my mid-70s and am a self-taught, very advanced home cook. To date, I haven’t found even one of your recipes that failed to produce excellent results. And you are a fun teacher to watch, too… you don’t take yourself too seriously and appear to LOVE food as much as I do. Thank you!

Excellent. As you are no doubt aware, LOVE is the most important ingredient in the kitchen.
Bro why are you galzing yourself
For those who, like me, kept rewinding to get the quantities right:
Combine dry ingredients: 1 1/2 C Corn Meal (255 g), 3/4 C Flour (90 g), 1/4 C sugar (30 g), 2 t Salt (12 g), 2 t Baking powder.
Wisk together the wet ingredients: 1 1/2 c warm milk (360 ml), 1/4 c melted butter (56g), 1 egg - room temp..
Combine and gently stir together.
Thanks ❤
Thank you so much. I hate that he doesn't have the recipe written out. But I do love him and his channel.

Wow! This is THE BEST cornbread ever!!! The flavor is wonderful, very CORN forward with a hint of sweetness. The textures, crisp on the outside, moist and firm on the inside. I love cornbread & have tried dozens of recipes over the years, this is truly the best! Thanks!!!
Reading the ingredients on the Jiffy box is enough of a motivation to make your own cornbread.
The reason! I’m here! Haha.
Have you looked at the ingredients of just plain corn meal? There's a lot more in there.
Not if you buy the right brand
@@mich5167 the brand is Jiffy….

Good Afternoon John, I am watching your quick and easy cornbread recipe today because I am out of jiffy and its 20 degrees outside. I'm not even sure if the store is open. I've got cornmeal from the food bank. My neighbor invited me over, she made a wonderful soup. Thanks to you, I'm going to bring the cornbread. Aught to be a delicious dinner on such a cold winter day. Thank You So much! You made making cornbread so simple, I'll never need Jiffy again.
20 degrees Fahrenheit? That actually is not very cold, unless of course you have insufficient heating.
@@antonboludo8886 20 degrees celsius, which is about -6 F. So, yes. Cold ☺️

So glad I came across your channel! It's like Clark Kent Cooking (Superman's gentle alter ego). Enjoyable to watch, great recipes, helpful tips, so relaxed and calm. Thank you John! 🙂
He referred to the mix as "its so sunny and happy" just love him.
He brightens my day, thank you John, 😂
As an old Georgia girl, I'm 56. I agree 100 percent with using a cast iron skillet but sugar . My grandmother would come up out of her grave and knock me out If she ever saw me cooking sweet corn bread. Lol. I have had it . But I'll have to stick with my buttermilk cornbread,no sugar. Yours does look delicious I have to admit ❤
Ol Georgia girl of 56!, barely out of your teens, carry on cooking.......
That's so sweet. I definitely will💜
My grandmother would put sugar in everything.....even greenbeans!😖
Glad to see you desire a sweet cornbread. I grew up in the south, but lived in Wyoming for 24 years. I'm all for sweet cornbread. I'm enjoying your cookbook. Thanks for sharing John.
Same! I love a sweet corn bread
me too!@@itsmeyourfriend
When you add sugar to cornbread, it becomes more of a corn muffin, imo. 😅
So what have tried so many recipes and never made a decent cornbread UNTIL now! Thank you John, for teaching me to make a perfect cornbread. I LOVE you and your videos. Lifesaver! 😘
Gosh, I love Corn Bread. Yes John, Mississippi here, we call sweet corn bread YANKEE CORN BREAD. I even love jam on corn bread. My favorite meal ad a kid was Chilli and Corn Bread. So good. Its really good to cube up butter in small cubes, out in freezer for about 10 minutes or so and add to your batter. So good!!!!
Howdy from coastal Mississippi 😂
Paused the video and went and made it. Very good flavor. I'm a transplant from Louisiana, and cornbread was a staple for me as a kid in the 1960s. My wife is Latina, and we will use this recipe with a Mexican twist with added jalapeños, jack cheese, and roasted corn kernels. Thanks for the perfect balance of flour and cornmeal and the idea of preheating pan. That made all the difference in texture that I have had difficulty with.
This was extremely easy, very fast and the final result was fantastic! Thank you so much! I will be doing this a lot.
I love that the video is straight to the point, the recipe, without annoying unrelated content.
I made this recipe today word for word, it came out delicious but salty. I'd recommend using 1 tsp salt next time I make this. Thank you!
I especially love watching John's videos if it's something I regularly make, like cornbread, because I ALWAYS learn something new to try, add, adjust. In this case it's pouring the batter into a hot pan. Brilliant! Thank you, I can't wait to try that out next time I make some chili and cornbread!
Your kitchen is a dream!
Oh my! Love corn bread with lots of butter.
Thanks for sharing.
How did you know we’ all were going to ask about the Jiffy product ??? You’re Brilliant!!! But what I love the most is ALL of the reasons to make your own AND the idea make your own dry mix again Brilliant!!!
I can’t wait to make!!! I also use cornbread for stuffing. Gee darn I’ll have to make a few batches!!! She said in a sarcastic tone lol!! Thank you so much!!!
Just finished making this, followed the video exactly. Turned out out perfect, never had better cornbread!
🎉howdy from coastal Mississippi. As a Cajun, l put a little whiskey in the mix . Sometimes l put minced jalapeno in the mix. I also can make this into cornbread balls. Mighty tasty 😋 Enjoy
Im a lifetime Tennessean & this is nothing like the cornbread I make, lol. No sugar, no flour, just cornmeal, egg, buttermilk and some of the hot grease from skillet is added too, a little water can be added for the right consistency. I’m sure yours is amazing, just so different. As you said, it depends on where you’re from.
Is it good ? Cuz it will be my first time to try, can you give me the recipe? 🙋🏻♀️
can you use plain milk instead of buttermilk?
I don’t really use a recipe, I just eyeball it with the cornmeal, buttermilk, egg, etc. It would not be the same if you used regular milk instead of buttermilk.
@@saintbodhisatvayou can make your own buttermilk, just add a tablespoon of white vinegar to 1 cup of milk. This is how my Mom taught me when she made Irish soda bread and never bought buttermilk. The buttermilk just adds the sour flavor, so make sure you got enough sugar to contrast.
I like the answer that you put😂😂😂😂 it's not a cornbread if it ain't got sugar😂
Love it, ended up adding more sugar to mine as I like sweet cornbread but I love how simple it is.
I live in Michigan and actually went on a tour of the Jiffy plant. It was very interesting. We make unsweetened cornbread for our cornbread dressing.😋
I love cornbread. My mom used to make cornbread in a cake pan, now she makes it in a skillet or make muffins. 😋
I made it yesterday and the reviews were beyond positive. I took your suggestion and used honey instead of sugar. I also added chopped jalapeño, corn and sharp mozzarella cheese in the batter. Thank you, sir!!!
Loved your take on homemade vs Jiffy. Eloquently worded. Kudos (I agree completely!)
I’ve been making your “original” cornbread recipe using a cast iron skillet for about a year now. The original uses brown sugar, buttermilk, and slightly smaller portions of the other ingredients. Here at 8,500 feet in the Andes, the original recipe always turns out perfect!
That sounds awesome.
What part of the Andes?

I always add sour cream to my batter I like the acid in there. Buttermilk basically does the same thing. I like to brush mine with honey butter while it’s still in the oven is gets a delicious sticky top.
Nice n easy I like this without cheese & bacon this is perfect for coffee ☕ sweet with any flavor
John, I've said this before and I'll say it again. You are quite literally the best. I love that I came across your page years ago. I was looking for a good corn pudding recipe and seen this. I used this as the base to my corn pudding. It turned out amazing!! You are excellent at this thing!!! 🎉🎉🎉
cornbread is absolutely my favorite and John and family are my favourite youtuber forever thanks for all the recipes love sam❤
Please say hi to the boys for me and please can you do video of your son making Mimi pizzas please ❤
Following along step by step RIGHT NOW with my FAV. Preppy! Can not wait to POP OUT of the oven. As with all your D-Lish dishes, I emulated they are screaming A+Mazing!!!
So funny, I was just trying to read this comment and heard John’s voice saying those words automatically 😂
I like to brush mine with honey butter while still in the oven it browns and add gives it a delicious sticky top. I always do this when I make jiffy, too. As soon as it sets enough to brush the honey butter on around 9 minutes or so.
A life long Southerner here!
Sugar in cornbread makes it a “cake”.
Buttermilk instead of whole milk.
Only use White Lily buttermilk cornmeal
Interesting! (Life long Northeasterner here) Can you recommend a recipe?
The guy explained the difference within the first minute of the video Sherlock, I bet his version is better anyways

I am planning to make cornbread for the Sunday after Thanksgiving. I'll try this out. Thanks John!
Tried this recipe and it turned out pretty good. A tad bit on the salty side, so next time I'll add maybe 1tsp -or 1 and a half teaspoons.
You truly have a recipe for everything I am looking for. Thank you for what I hope is another great recipe, off to bake!
Thanks for your cornbread recipe . I agree with one previous comment reading the ing on the Jeffy box I often wonder why so much sugar is added to recipes , I read the ingredients b& just put the box back and now I have yr reciipe and others 🙏I will try it
The best cornbread recipe that I have ever tried. Next time, I will add a little bit less sugar. I used 12 inch iron pan and it was perfect. Thank you for this great recipe ❤

looks so delicious! I cannot wait to try this tonight! This morning I tried your pancake recipe and my family found their pancakes to be sodelicious! Thank you so much for great recipes!
I haven't made cornbread in a while. I used to make sweet potato cornbread and I would also make blue corn cornbread since bluecorn has such a different taste then yellow or white corn. I loved mixing mine with poppy seeds and honey with out using sugar depending on who your feeding. I need to make it again.
I love your mixing bowl!
And the recipe too 🙂
Thanks so much! 😊
And that oven
Delicious John many thanks nd bless to your family
Oh my goodness! You and I make the exact same cornbread. And yes! heating the cast iron skillet is the key. That batter needs to sizzle when it hits the skillet. So good with a big bowl of chili.
Oh my god I have made it so yummy eating with apricot jam and tea wow wow wow thank you. Love from UK.❤
i'm awful at cooking and get very panicked when cooking. my other half normally does all our cooking bless him.
but this looks like something i could actually do and contribute to the meal in some yummy way. plus your video is super easy to follow (i can get overwhelmed and confused easy in the kitchen). and you relaxed and fun attitude towards it is calming and makes this normally stressful processe fun and enjoyable.
thank you so much. have subscribed so i can try to do more of these. :)
Love your videos John! So easy to follow along and your recipes always come out great! I didnt realize you were from CT so are we, yay!
Thank you another good recipe
Looks delish. I have never made cornbread but your recipe looks easy; I'll try it!
Wow, you're really getting us ready for Thanksgiving! First the sweet potato pie, and now the cornbread! I really enjoy watching your videos, you have such a nice calming demeanor that I feel my blood pressure go down as soon as I hear your voice.😊
This is The Best Version Ever! Thanks!
I LOVE your mixing bowl ❣️
This is basically identical to my cornbread recipe. We like it with corned beef, with soup beans, and mixed with diced onion, celery, scallions, crumbled together and used as stuffing for Thanksgiving turkey. Best stuffing ever!
That sounds amazing!! 😋
Sounds delicious
I usually dice up some fresh rosemary for chili or thyme for when we do poultry. A little of really good asiago for when we're having a more Italian meal.
I baked this cornbread step by step today and the result was excellent....
Thank you for adding the metric measurements 🙏🏻🙏🏻🫶🏻
Oh my... I can just smell that right now. :) This recipe would be great for some crackling bread! Thank you for sharing all of these great videos and easy recipes!
Very solid point about having my own mix!
I made the cornbread. Directly from Brazil. It was delicious. Very similar to restaurants in Harlem (NYC).
Amazing and looks easy to make!!! Thank you for sharing!!!
You are so welcome Isabel! Hope you enjoy the recipe.
Thank You John!!!!! I love cornbread‼️
This looks great! One of the things I love to do with cornbread is to use it as a “lid” on chili. Oftentimes there’s not quite enough chili for a second meal, but whipping up a batch of cornbread to throw on top stretches it to a full main dish.
Another reason to make cornbread from scratch is that you then have the cornmeal to make cornmeal mush! Also, cornmeal cakes are delicious.
Making this tonight! Thank you!
I made this today and we loved it. Thank you sooo much.
Excellent recipe! Thanks!
9” is like a #6 or 7 depending on the brand of Cast Iron. I have a dedicated pan for cornbread and it is a #7 BSR. Perfect.
I have been watching your videos for so long! Love u and your family!!
oh i so appreciate your recipe channel. TY❤
Ok, you got me I subbed. And yes I've been watching your vids for some time. Love the deserts you've made. Big fan of good cornbread too. I always use iron pans, never had a fail yet. Really enjoy a drizzle of honey with that. Thanks for sharing!
Soo good recipe I ❤ the measurements in cups❤
that stoneware mixing bowl is gorgeous 😊😊
Thant looks delicious, can’t wait to make it. ❤
I'm of the opinion of no floir or sugar. My Thanksgiving stuffing or dressing as we call it in the south is always made with white cornbread
So good that it's a meal by itself.
Thank you so much for sharing this video ❤❤
Masterfully created! ❤
I adore your videos iv made so many dishes so far all amazing
I look forward to Tuesday cooking lessons . Corn bread is nothing like I thought it would be it looks like cake, but I be it's scrumdidly umptious
Wow!!! I am gonna make that!!! maybe some diced pimentos and green chilli's diced would be fun???
I Love the Cornbread Recipe and is so good 💕
Nice, thank you. I'm going to try this but using muffin pans for smaller individual breads. I hope it still turns out great. I'll heat up the pans with oil in them like you did with your skillet. Wish me luck!
I make cornbread often hear in upstate new york, I use a muffin pan and my recipe is similar to yours , I add a tablespoon of lemon juice to the milk, a quick form of butter milk , I also beat my egg with the butter then add it to the milk , it stops the butter from solidifying, talk about having something quick to snack on and it's cheap to make
I like mine with buttermilk. Great reheated with maple syrup on top. Morning's are happy that way, lol.
Excellent recipe. I am a 30+ year New Englander with Southern roots. Currently exploring my Southern culinary heritage. Fresh super sweet corn is an excellent addition to cornbread.
Wondering why you use regular milk v. Buttermilk in your recipe
Love that stove!
This man is the best!
since I was a kid I always cut my cornbread in half, and add butter and jelly. So good
Oh man I love cornbread. Cant wait to try your version! Thanks, John! 🧡
My husband’s family was from the American south, and he was used to very plain cornbread with no sugar. Whereas I am from the southwest, where we throw all sorts of stuff into cornbread, including chile and grated cheese. 😅 I personally like very sweet cornbread (with honey butter), and whenever I made it he would say, with disgust, “YANKEE cornbread!”
Love your baking ❤
In the summer, I usually avoid using an oven. I don't care about the crust, so I just make it in the microwave. Very fast and surprisingly good.
I just made these. Cornmeal is slightly impossible to get and very expensive here, so I just used polenta which is the same but the grains are bigger. It's good but was missing something. Note to self: Tastes good with nuts and vanilla extract. Should double the sugar. It pairs well with a big spoonful of dulce de leche
So yummy! I don't like anything in my cornbread and I do like it a bit sweet 🙃 Thank you for the awesome recipie!
Just tried it! Didn't know what to make with soup, didn't have any cornmeal so used semoulina, it was very good! (Added jalapeno as well)
Looks so delicious well prepared
“..sugarless, unlike the tea !” 😂 AMEN !
