A Roommates Daughter accidently made the best Pecan Pie ever... She messed up everything - seriously. She baked something else with it on the lower rack and she kept opening the oven. This poor pie essentially baked forever - it took hours for it to be done (she gave up). BUT what had happened was it was baked low and slow. The Pecans had candied and were perfectly toasted. There was a wonderful and flavorful crunch and the center somewhat caramelized. Best pie ever made and could never be replicated. ROFL.
I remember I messed up a carrot cake-slice recipe and it was the most moist and flavourful carrot cake I have ever made. I have no idea how I messed it up so it was a one-time thing 🥲
Good job. This is my mother’s recipe I’ve eaten and used all my life (I’m 73). my only addition is 1/2 tsp of almond extract. Worth trying. Great story- I worked in the oilfield out of town most of my life eating in restaurants a lot of the time. In Shoshoni Wyoming I ordered pecan pie from their menu about 6 times, only to be told they were out. Finally the owner told me it was the old menu from the previous owner and the cook didn’t know how to make it. I called my mom(I was 40 or so at the time) got her recipe and helped the cook to follow it. A hit! The customers loved it and I got mine free!

Before rolling out the refrigerated crust, set it on the counter at room temperature for about 10 minutes to reduce cracking. I got that tip from a previous Preppy Kitchen recipe video. Literally, five minutes after watching the video, I was measuring ingredients to make the pie. It's in the oven as I type this. John got the giggles. Love it! Glad he did not edit that out.
So, my son is in a culinary arts class for homeschool and the teacher has them watch a few of your videos and bake something for credit. He knows my daughters and I watch you and try your recipes often. The house was buzzing that day with excitement 😅 I wonder what the teacher will have him bake next, we know it’s going to be delicious😊
You probably have the most consistently good recipes of anyone I follow. Thank you for that, especially when there are so many that fake their results. I love that you include the little oops moments as well. I just finished this recipe...I used my own pie crust recipe, but your filling and it is absolutely stunning. I also used your lattice technique on a cherry pie this afternoon and it worked beautifully. First time doing lattice and it was quite fun. Thanks for all your hard work and expertise.
Had to stop the video because I have to tell you that I Love that you let the mistake in the video, is so unusual but so usual! Thats what happens in the kitchen, is so raw, cool, and kind to let it in the video, bravo👏🏼
I made this pie for the first time this week.I have to say, it's the best recipe and the best Pecan Pie Ive had in a very long time. I loved it so much that I bought your lovely cookbook. Great personal intro to your life and beautiful family . Congrats
I love how you explain why each step is necessary and how it helps the dessert come together instead of just saying here are the steps. Your channel is awesome 🙌🏻
It's in the oven - my first pie crust ever and my first pecan pie (I'm from the north). I don't know if it's gonna be good but I've never cooked anything that made my house smell this good.
@@spidermanle0964 I've never made anything so delicious in my life, and I cook every day: ) I think we need pecan pie in the north, and in Europe for that matter. Lots of us have missed out.
I just finished making this pie! It came out really, really well! Taste interesting (because I never had a pecan pie to compare it to). Here's the thing - in Australia, we don't have 'Dark Corn Syrup,' it doesn't exist, but I really wanted to make this pie, so what I did was, for the 240ml dark corn syrup, I replaced with a combination of 3/4 (180ml) glucose syrup, and 1/4 (60ml) Molasses - this gives the same texture and mouth feel (and hopefully taste). Also, I used a glass Pyrex pie bowl instead of metal one - I believe glass takes longer to absorb heat, so I baked it for about 60 mins, because after 40 mins it was wobbling around an awful lot. All in All - pie came out brilliant. Taste amazing (depends on what your tastebuds like though). Great recipe and instructions!
I am always searching for new ways to improve my recipes and my Hubs can not stand when I deviate but yours are always wonderful and at the very least I incorporate them into mine. However, I can honestly say that I will stop searching for ways to improve my pecan pie recipe because yours is exactly the same as I have been making mine for years. Thanks John! 😊
Done! I have to say, I cannot believe I made something this delicious. The p'khans on top are perfectly caramelized/candied (with just a sprinkle of salt!?) My filling is too thin cuz my pie pan was 11 inches, oops, but that is a good thing cuz I don't need much of it. My husband has never had p'khan pie in his life (we're in Europe) and he didn't wait for me to get a fork, he ate the whole slice with his hands and then he took mine and ate it too! Wow. I think people like me (from Seattle) really need to look into southern food. It's not just brisket....I'm gonna make this for my company's Christmas party cuz they've never had anything like this in their lives. The only change I made to the recipe was I made browned butter. No pumpkin pie type spices, just natural pecan/karo/vanilla flavor. To be honest the only p'khan pie I'd had before today was the 7-11 mini versions (they're not bad, don't laugh).
I used to always make my own crust, then I started buying premade ones, and the ones I bought have a clorox smell to them, no matter the brand I’ve bought, so now it’s back to baking. Your pie just looks so beautiful. As a child I wouldn’t eat any nuts, then when I was around 13 I was having a piece of my Mother’s homemade German Chocolate cake with a double recipe of the frosting, sorry for the visual, but I sucked all the sweet frosting away from the nuts and then removed the nuts from my mouth. At that moment my Mother told me that I couldn’t have anymore cake if I was going to waste the nuts, and just like that I started loving nuts!
Lol that was a funny visual but I have done this.. Growing up I too hated nuts.. specially in desserts. Otherwise I love them idk why I detested them in desserts. Now I find them delicious and a needed contrast in texture 💯
I agree. I found a Cuisinart food processor at Goodwill and now I use that to make easy pie crust. By the time I fiddle with unwrapping unfolding and patching a bought crust I can have a homemade one
I make a low sugar version of this for my diabetic family members using a syrup called Sukrin Gold fiber syrup and brown sugar. I also have made this without the Sukrin syrup n I used a sugar free honey substitute I found in Walmart along with Splenda brown sugar. Pretty much John’s recipe. I also made his exact recipe for the rest of my non diabetic family and it was wonderful!

OK, hear me out cause I am about to blow your entire mind: Add.... A handful of chocolate chips. I think you mix it in while the custard/pudding part is still hot before you pour that into the shell! It doesn't SOUND like it does much, but oh my god it changes the game. You can't really taste the chocolate, but rather, it somehow brings out all of the other flavors a lot more! I just made this pie tonight and let me tell you it was the BEST PECAN PIE I’ve ever made!! It was so delicious and super easy. Highly recommend making this pie. Thank you @preppykitchen for posting this recipe. 🤩💯🔥
When I was 18 and knew I was to marry the next year, I copied a bunch of my mother's recipes, one of which was her pecan pie. It is the recipe I've used for almost 60 years now. It calls for 1/2 cup white karo and 1/2 honey. Other than that, it is the same recipe. One funny thing is that I always melted my butter in the microwave as I was putting together the rest of the ingredients. I don't know how many times I had put the pie in the oven only to find out the butter was still in the microwave. I then had to try to get the pie out of the oven and add the butter. Since I've done that so many times I make it a rule now to melt the butter before putting the rest of the ingredients into a bowl. It is my daughter's favorite pie, and I make it every year. I will be making it for this year's Thanksgiving dinner.
You helped my baking game. I almost gave up baking. Can you please make a video on mini pumpkin cheese cupcakes? Love your videos especially when the family gets involved. Happy holidays
If I ever tour the USA, I will tryout all your sweet pies. In Australia we are known for our savoury meat pies. As for sweet, we rarely go beyond the apple pie.
It's almost 3 in the morning here in S.A,and I can't sleep, but watching your recipes just does it for,so homey and comforting I love pecan nuts, and the sause that turns into an amazing pie,I can see myself have a big slice and all resistance crumble😂🎉❤leke Leke
I prefer home made pecan pie to store bought because store bought is far too sweet. I love the buttery sweetness that homemade has! Its not over the top sweet but has a more buttery or salty sweetness!
John I love your recipes! They always turn out perfectly and everyone I talk to you knows about you, you are the best! I made this, I wish I could attach a picture of the disaster that was. The crust was perfect, which was an extra dagger in the heart as I threw it away but the filling bubbled up and burned badly, it didn’t smell bad until the last minute & now my whole house is filled with the grossest burnt syrup smell, two hours later! I have to admit I have never liked cooking with the syrup it’s always a mess and you never know what you are going to get. I told my friend I would take a break and reflect on why I can’t measure up to John 😢
I am excited to try your recipe ~ this pie is a holiday tradition in my home, but always willing to try a new recipe. I like to use the fork press around the edges ~ it just says “pecan pie” to me. 😄
I tend to add a little bit of cinnamon to mine (say a quarter to half a teaspoon). You don't really taste the cinnamon, it just adds a bit of floral sweetness that vibes well with the vanilla and overall sweetness. If I were going to do the shingling of whole pecan halves on the top, I might reserve a bit of that custard gel to coat the halves, but having the contrast of the pecan pieces being essentially candied and the toasted halves on the top could be good too.
Add peaches or apples and cranberries and or blueberries with chocolate chunks. Garam Masala is an awesome spice to add, as well. Heavenly!!!! Oh and bourbon 😉
I love this video! I'm making a pecan pie (with pecans I brought from family in GA) to take to a Thanksgiving meal Thursday. Great pointers and updates you suggested. It will be much better than the usual Karo syrup recipe (thought that is still a classic pleaser). thank you and happy Thanksgiving!
His recipe is pretty close to the original Karo recipe, I noticed he cuts back a bit on the granulated sugar which I do too. A tablespoon of dark rum or bourbon makes it even better
If I’m looking at a recipe for pecan pie and they say “peecan” I leave 🤣 Also, I love how when you make a mistake you keep it in your videos. It’s so real haha happens to the best of us! Great recipe!
Definitely will try your method John! WITH Pecans! Not sure why you got the church giggles but it was amusing to hear you laugh! You started your sentence and I was like “what-what!!???😂
I just took mine out of the oven. First time. Unfortunately couldn't find any corn syrup where I am. Used Agave syrup instead. The pie filling came out quite dark. Almost burnt looking. Hoping it's just well done and gooey on the inside. Letting it cool down at the moment. Pretty excited and anxious at the same time
What I used to do at the restaurant I was in , I froze my slices of pecan pie. When I got an order I dipped my frozen pie slice in a light batter and fried it . When golden I took it out and rolled it in cinnamon sugar and served it with ice cream

I remember I messed up a carrot cake-slice recipe and it was the most moist and flavourful carrot cake I have ever made. I have no idea how I messed it up so it was a one-time thing 🥲
I messed up a curry. It was a hit too. Everytime I have tried since, it is terrible
Maybe you were starving at that point
That perforated pan is mind shattering. Of course! Makes so much sense.
I absolutely love to watch his cooking videos. His voice is so soothing...and his laugh!!! OMG...love it!!!!

😂😂😂😂. This video had me laughing so hard when John started laughing! He is great and his recipes even better!!
Magnefisent John many many thanks God bless your family
Incredible pie! I’ll be making one for Thanksgiving! I enjoy watching you bake , You make it look so easy.
LOVE pecan pie!!! I'll try your recipe... I hope I will have as fun as you while making it 😅
If I’m looking at a recipe for pecan pie and they say “peecan” I leave 🤣
Also, I love how when you make a mistake you keep it in your videos. It’s so real haha happens to the best of us! Great recipe!
Muah! Magic! Love ya John...and family!
Amazing pie and very well explained! Thanks for sharing yet another delicious recipe 😊
Definitely will try your method John! WITH Pecans! Not sure why you got the church giggles but it was amusing to hear you laugh! You started your sentence and I was like “what-what!!???😂
Wow what a beautiful pie crust!
Really getting us ready for Thanksgiving 👍
John you are SO stinking cute with your walnut pie giggles!!!
This channel’s my ultimate comfort zone ❤
I just took mine out of the oven. First time. Unfortunately couldn't find any corn syrup where I am. Used Agave syrup instead. The pie filling came out quite dark. Almost burnt looking. Hoping it's just well done and gooey on the inside. Letting it cool down at the moment. Pretty excited and anxious at the same time
Can't wait to try this! Love the bowl, where did you find that? Thanks for the recipe.
Looks so delicious ! I always make my pie dough
My husband is already going to be thanking you.
Thank you very much for the recipe! Though as someone trying to use this video, I think the bloopers would be a fun thing saved for the end!
What I used to do at the restaurant I was in , I froze my slices of pecan pie. When I got an order I dipped my frozen pie slice in a light batter and fried it . When golden I took it out and rolled it in cinnamon sugar and served it with ice cream
Thank you so much for your sharing
So helpful in life
I love pecan pie and if I make one soon, it will be this one to the tee!
