This is what the automotive industry needs. Companies willing to explore and innovate cool shit. Not because it’s necessary, but because they can. If they can make lightweight, simulated sports cars that happen to be ev but make me feel like I’m driving a 911, that’s something desirable.
Absolutely. If we can buy a copy of Gran Turismo with near perfect replication of our favourite engines, I don’t see why we can’t some day have and enjoy this in EV drivetrains.
Perfectly agree in that sense, at least Hyundai’s trying new things around as explorer spending a lot of money investing in stuff like this, look at some Japanese companies like Honda and Nissan, had their glorious times. But stuck in the past still not investing much on new things hence why they are failing ( cheap yen doesnt help either)
"While it is cool, it is completely unnecessary." Sometimes that's the best part. If we only did totally necessary things all cars would be 90s corollas.
But, if the sounds do nothing for performance, I think it's silly. I'd rather hear the sound of the electric motor. Matt Farah was impressed, liking it on track more than a Porsche Taycan. He thinks sound and the shifting helps one recognize speed coming into curves on the track, which makes sense to me, though I don't go to the track. I just don't want my performance car, even if I never go to the track, big and up in the air like that.
@@lawrencesiskind3554 EVs are going to be "big" by definition, because they have such a heavy battery pack. As companies innovate and new technologies come into play in the next 10 or 15 years, you will see the possibility of small roadster EVs that are affordable and have 400 mile range. But this is the challenge of people and companies that like to be "first movers." You have to work within the constraints of current technology and platforms.
I appreciate how Mark and Jack are willing to express opposing opinions in this review and others. I'm more aligned with Jack on the 5 N. It might not be brilliant at 10/10ths but everywhere else I think it's an absolute hoot compared to every other EV I've driven.
It's a step in the right direction and one of the only EVs on the market that is a truly interesting vehicle. A lot of the options are definitely gimmicks you'll use a handful of times, but it's optional. However you want to enjoy it, you can find it. It's hard to hide 5000lbs though
Fenton you should drive one of the RWD ioniq 6 models through the canyons. My wife bought one and I decided to just test it out. That car is hilarious. It's so heavy that you can basically drift every corner without trying, and the torque just pulls you out on exit. We were laughing the entire time. Honestly the Hyundai EVs are way more fun than they seem even on the stock 20s. Though I would still prefer driving a proper sports car through there. Rich Rebuilds just did an EV honda beat build and that makes me curious on how an EV Miata would do.
A great way to look at it, I agree. I still appreciate the differing viewpoint from his cohort, bc that shines light on things Hyundai still needs to improve. Still, so many enthusiasts decry EVs that they aren't emotionally/physically involving past insane straight line acceleration, and this is a huge step to address this. And it can only improve from here, really.
I disagree that the fake shifting is useless. The fake shifting and fake engine noise helps you gauge your speed entering a corner on the track without looking at the speedo.
More importantly the down shifting actually creates drag which settles the car into the corner just like a real gearbox without touching the brake pedal 🍻
Mark is a dude from 90s car enthusiast era who praise Japanese cars and over-criticize Korean cars. One of his previous EV review videos, he mentioned German and Japan still lead the pack. Where are the Japanese EVs?
Because the Japanese brands don't buy the stupid thinking of EVs are the future. The only reason Toyota and Honda have an EV is because the US government mandates that in order to continue selling cars in California, they must have one and yes, both are crap (for a reason)
@@WarCry389 Lol they used to say the same thing about ICE cars when they were first introduced. People riding horses and buggies thought they were noisy polluting stinky novelties that were a fad. With literally tens of millions of EVs throughout the world, EVs are here to stay, like it or not.
I bought my Ionic 5N a month ago and LOVE IT. Not only can it smoke any muscle car in my town, but it can also haul my family of 5, our dog and our luggage. My wife drives the car as a family car in eco mode, while I like to change the setting to Sport and use the paddle shifters and Sound modes. Here in California, where gas is $6.00 per gallon, we save a ton of money on fuel and time, since we plug it in at home and let it charge during the non-peak hours. Where it costs us over $120.00 to fill up our Audi Q7, it costs us around $8.00 to charge the batteries from 20% to 80%. Our average mileage gives us somewhere near 228 miles for a full charge, which is way more than we need on a daily basis. The Ionic 5N looks great and performs like a hot rod. Plus no more oil changes, radiator flushes, smog tests, transmission services, tailpipe emissions and other expensive repairs. Electric cars are the future and it is a good thing.
Unlike the Tesla mode 3 or Y, this car can do more than 1 hot lap of a circuit without falling apart. Edit: to all the people defending Tesla in the comments, go look up throttle house’s video on the new model 3 performance. The car literally wasn’t safe to drive after 1 warmup and 1 hot lap on their track which is a lot shorter than the nurburgring. No way in hell would a stock model 3 performance be able to finish a lap of the nurburgring at full send.
The lap times that were set were just some dude's car and using the track's timer, unlike the Taycan and the Model 3, which set their own records without any transparency on if thwy were stock cars and used their own timers. They're probably legit... but the fact the I5N showed up as just someone's car and did as well as it did is excellent. Ita defenitely a BLAST to drive @KP-xi4bj
Something strange going on here... Driven one a few times and it really does not look like it did when we where driving it. It looks all over the place. Can't speak for the braking, but that was what I was most impressed with. Car was really, really good overal. A mile ahead every other EV I have driven. Stock tires, stock everything... It was brilliant. Actually thinking of buying one. We are full blown petrolheads (S2K, Supra MKV & IV, gtr 32, Evo 9... In our group) and we where ALL blown away. We wanted it to fail, but it didn't. It does not seem to correlate with this review which I find very strange. I can literally see how floaty it is in high speed in the video. It was rock solid with us. Almost seems like a lemon in this vid 😅.
I've tracked most of my cars, most recently my EV6 GT (the predecessor to this), and I think they're being too harsh. Suffice to say the track instructor was shocked at how well it performed when he drove it, and the brakes were more than enough, and hardly even got hot, as In I could touch them with my bare hands right after a session (meanwhile my stage 2 MK7 GTI would have thoroughly smokey and toasted brakes after a session). And I was lapping everybody by miles, including base C8 corvettes (though admittedly that guy drove like a granny). The 200 mile range should be an absolute non-issue for anybody with less than a 3 digit commute. Level 1 charging has been more than enough for my purposes. Build quality has been great, and drives great around town and my passengers always give me compliments. The ioniq 5N should be even more refined than the EV6 in theory. Tl;DR just buy it.
@@hazardeur I very much do. That's why we have out own pretty nice route to go drive these cars. We all felt brakes where on par with our other cars (which literally all have big brake kits on them). We won't be trying the drifting stuff in public, cause we still sign a waver obviously. We're pretty used to going to Spa / Nürburgring so I think we actually have a decent idea of how the 5N stacks up against our other cars.
A rare miss for me. Is there any other EV under 100K that can even do a track day totally stock? Is there a more fun EV under 100K? They complain about the weight and obviously it's heavy, but an X3 M40i or X3M (natural ICE competitors in form factor and price) are ~4300-4500 lbs. Why not compare it to those cars? Or, hell - compare it to other EVs? Like, yeah - for a track day car something like a Supra or M2 is going to be better than a 4800 lb. first-get Hyundai SUV. "But Hyundai markets this car as track ready!" ... so does every brand that builds a high-performance SUV. And yet most people use these cars to drive to work and get groceries and maybe go out every once in a while and enjoy a backroad or track day. I guess I feel like there's no world in which they'd expect an X3M to drive on track like an M2, because they know the X3 will mostly be used to drive around town. Because it's an SUV. But here they seem frustrated that the 5 N is not a lightweight sports car.
I've yet to see a X3M or X5M at my local track day. Even G80 M3's aren't that common. Seems like the vast majority of G and F series M cars are street only. I see tons of E90/E92, E46 and E36 M3's on the track though.
I don’t get why Mark is so hypercritical of this thing. You don’t have to use any of the fake shifting or fake engine noise, but you can if you want to. And if you don’t want any of that stuff why would you buy this anyways? You can just get the regular Ioniq 5. I don’t think electric cars will ever have the soul of ICE cars but it’s nice to see someone at least trying to bridge the gap. He criticizes it for not needing any of this stuff, yeah a lot of cars don’t need a lot of the things they have. I don’t need ventilated/heated seats, I don’t need auto cruise control, I don’t need power windows, I don’t need 500 HP, but I WANT those things. If you don’t, then don’t get them.
His points were right though. The noise is terrible and could have been amazing but it’s not there yet. And she’s a big old girl that’s just the way it is.
The sound I can agree on but like he said it's a first effort and well done. Next gens will be better. Any way you slice it it's just as good as a type R and many 4/6 cylinder turbo cars with their fake engine sounds @@_chipchip
Cuz he's biased. He's talking this and that looking for excuses at the end, talking random $hit. If he ever cared what's necessary or not. He shouldn't even drive any sports cars and do RUclips. Seems like a typical JDM biased RUclipsr.
If U can say "this thing is horrible to drive" while grinning from ear to ear (especially from someone who doesn't smile much) is it really that horrible?
Realistically, how many people are gonna buy this 5,000lb , overpowered EV to take to the track? likely, people will have a blast on back roads with it and hot rodding on the streets...I Do believe hyundai will be offering a Much improved and wider selection of engine sounds ofr this as a download upgrade...the shifting part is already very good... hard to fault a company for being daring enough to tread where noone has gone b4
Yeah, you can tell by the way Mark drives cars on track that he wants cohesive and predictable driving character from them. He's less interested in an entertaining experience than Mark and many other car journalists. Hence why Jack likes this car better.
IMO more fun than the Taycan, Plaid, and even sapphire. Others might be faster and post better numbers, but the N keeps a gigantic smile on your face the entire time. Also it's just the first iteration and it's already so good.
I think the big disconnect between EV’s and enthusiasts is that many enthusiasts are sensitive to the degree to which the driving experience is digitally mediated. The thicker the layer of digital mediation, the less fun the car is, no matter the acceleration figures. It’s not about just having a steering wheel in front of you and pressing a pedal to go fast. It’s about interacting with and being directly engaged with a machine in an essential way. Too many screens are a persistent reminder of the digitally mediated layer. Synthetic sounds are another reminder. And every intervention which occurs between your hands and feet to disguise or control the weight of the vehicle are constant reminders that you’re a customer and not an owner, in a sense. And, frankly, every variable, adjustable setting, and every drive mode dilutes the character of a car. If it can be whatever you want it to be at the push of a button, then there’s less of an innate non-fungible character to connect to, and there’s less of a sense of enjoying a car which has been made “for you.” A lot of contemporary cars suffer from this, but it’s most pronounced with EV’s these days.
Also the variety in drive train types...flat sixes, V-4/6/8/10/12, I4/6. Front engine rear drive, front engine front drive, mid engine rear drive, rear engine (the holy of holies) rear drive. Throw in the different noises each engine type makes and you have a whole lot of variety. These sorts of things are appealing to most enthusiasts, though I don't think the appliance car normies think this way.
Well done. It's cars like this that I point at when people do the whole "bUt iT's LiKe pLaYiNg a Video gAmE" nonsense about my GT-R. You can ACTUALLY PLAY A DRIVING GAME in some EVs, ffs...yet people rant and rave about them just because they get to 60 in 2.8s or whatever. Gives me a chuckle.
Mark is hating on the sound effects for no reason other than “it’s unnecessary”. Dude all modern tech and luxury features are unnecessary, what are you talking about
As an Ioniq 5 owner the best thing about the N simulated engine sounds and shifting is that I could turn them off. I drove manual transmissions for decades. I don’t miss it.
I kinda agree with Jack, modern cars have fake noises anyway, but Hyundai is doing what even BMW, Mercedes, and Audi/VW are not doing with their cars, they are trying to get the engagement back into driving. This is really fun and silly and it is sorely missing in so many modern cars. Even gasoline cars. I am also not in the age bracket that can afford a $70,000 vehicle, but if this tech comes to a hatchback Elantra/i30N in a few years that will be awesome for the market. With VW removing the manual in the GTI, I might as well go electric for my next car, at least now I know at least Hyundai is focused on fun.
I have test driven this car last month, it genuinely blew me away. Kudos to Hyundai, they have made one of the best driving EVs on the market today. And I disagree that it is a waste of resources. The fake gears actually make this car hella fun! It has excellent handling and the gears make the back roads really awesome. I don’t think I have had this much in most cars
@@ethereous No, because it's a false equivalency. The fake gear changes is something you feel, experience, and interact with. Plus, respected car journalists who think fake scoops are ridiculous think the "gear changes" are not a gimmick and add to the fun, experience, and engagement of driving the car. You just sound like a hater.
@@Bash-Toks They gave the EN budget performance car of the year last year... even beat out the Golf R and CTR. While I disagree with a lot of what they said in this video, they have given Hyundai massive props multiple times before. I think this review is more critical due to the silly nature of this as an EV, and less to with brands.
This is a tough one. This is the first time I've seen content on this car where the host wasn't smiling and laughing the entire time. I like the idea of quiet stealthy speed while also being able to attack a back road with SOME engagement. In my opinion for a first go-round this is a cool car.
@@NomenClature-o8s Ah, so a car that's targeted at masses resulting in the masses liking them is bad? You should learn to make some sense before talking shit. Also, a lot of other youtubers with racing experience have tracked this car more extensively than these guys talking and goofing around while joy riding around the track and have said great things about it.
@@NomenClature-o8swait, so all the race car drivers RUclips channels taking these things around the tracks are all just not driving it right? What’s your point? It’s unclear
I bought it 3 months ago and love it. It’s an electric race car and tons of fun. 200 miles on 80% charge is plenty for me. I added a level 2 charger at home. At first I used the fake noise and shifts but it got old and now I drive in silence.
"I hate this it's horrible" Smiles and laughter never leave your face. Also, it weighs less than an M5, but of course the BMW engineering is brilliant.
So as someone that just genuinely appreciates engineering, I love watching videos like this. Would I ever buy an EV? I honestly don't know, but regardless of your feelings on EVs, you have to appreciate the engineering, technology, and ingenuity that goes into making these cars! Even if I never plan to own one, I appreciate what they are.
It was a fun test drive, but even with convenient charging available, the sub 200 mile real world range was a big turn off. The other issue I had was dealer availability and how much they're trying to charge for these. With $10k down and nearly 800 credit score, they wanted $1965 per month for 48 months. $104k for this car? No chance. This one might not be the one for me but this car makes me excited for what is to come with EVs. Like you said, this is the first real attempt at this. A few iterations down the road and this could be seriously great.
If they can make it in a smaller form factor I prefer, I could see myself happy with the stuff this car does. I don't mind fake stuff as long as the end result feels good.
EV's are done bud...unless you live on the West coast there is no practical need/use for electric...sales have plummeted....companies have dropped making EV's all together companies have slashed fabricating them by more than half...the fad is over....the ppl who wanted a electric car got it and are quickly realizing they f'ed up and either go back to gas or buy another second gas vehicle because they realize you cant go anywhere in electric efficently...not to mention the resale value is just god awful...most electric cars lose more than 60% of there resale value once there used....would you pay 1.5million for a house if you knew that in 3-8 years you MIGHT be able to only get 500,000k for it? HELL NO! Makes you excited for whats to come? HA! Your excited for 100k basemodel cars and 200k basemodel trucks? Because ppl buying vehicles at THESE prices are just showing the automakers that we as a ppl are STUPID enough to pay these prices so they will just keep jacking them up.
@@Scypher0thI don't know why you're comparing a home to a car, that's like comparing apples to a Dodge Durango SRT hellcat. EV's aren't going anywhere and you can definitely travel with them. The best EV is a used EV at this point since you don't eat depreciation. Have you tried an EV before?
While a sub-200 range does not seem like a like, let’s be honest. How many days does it take for you to drive at least 200 miles? With an EV, you’re able to charge any time you are home for the 200 mile range. How often do you have 200+ mile commutes? It’s simple just like plugging in your phone every day.
These will be excellent second hand cars I think, once someone else has eaten the initial depreciation, but that's mostly true for all cars, especially EVs.
His opinion on horrible to drive on track is what differentiate regular person with actual racing driver, watch how Misha Charoudin throw this thing on every corner on Nurburgring
Even more impressive, watch how the guy in the Ionic 5N in front of Misha was flinging that thing through the corners. Even Misha was impressed. After doing the laps, he was asking that guy about the settings he was using, cause he couldn’t get the one he was driving to dance like that. I think a lot of it was using heavier regen on the braking, which helped it to rotate & slide out the way it did.
I'm all about this car... I think what Hyundai is doing here in trying to emulate having a traditional engine and transmission is a necessity for EV's to be adopted by every demographic. Sure this might not be the best application, since it's the first, but with revisions and modifications I truly believe this is the future.
It seems like it would be worth it to test the Ioniq N again but with track tires maybe? What’s confusing is other peoples experience on the track compared to Mark and Jack’s experience, why was theirs so lacking in performance in regards to braking? (As an example). Maybe give it second try with track tires and ask the engineers about the braking issues?
you can turn the sonic boom off, the brubble off.. there is a setting on that, this car got almost similar with racing game where u can set most things.. it's good.. go watch throttle house, they test a lot and show on how to use the setting
If Mark hates the optional sounds and shifting that Hyundai came out that actually got some effort put into them, I can’t wait for him to see and review the electric charger dodge coming out with the vacuum sound…
"It's horrible to drive." Said as they're laughing their rear ends off with the biggest smiles on their faces LOL. I like what Hyundai did here honestly. Good effort, it can get refined with the next gen/software updates, and if you really don't want it you can turn it off.
If you give it a good thought, laughing is an expression of despise towards something or somebody. It has nothing to do with joy (misconception), except of being better than somebody by laughing at how bad/stupid another is, or the situation one's at. When something is really good, it doesn't make you laugh - it makes you smile or feel like you're out of words.
There's a difference between a car being fun and good to drive. A fast SUV or heavy muscle car can be fun but what they mean by great to drive is in the traditional drivers sense in that it rotates well, is well balanced, is predictable, doesn't understeer and plow out as this likely does or surprise snap oversteer like the early gen S2000s. Balance, predictability, and fluidity are what makes a car great to drive.
Couldn't wipe the smile off my face during the track section with a laugh at the end. Haven't had this much fun watching since the Kona N video. Jack clinging on to the handle for dear life!
I was blown away after my test drive on how awesome it was (driving, comfort, and looks in and out) and all the cool convenience features, although the US car doesn't get the HUD nor sunroof which is dumb. I would have bought it if the dealer wasn't charging $2k markup and the interests rates on car loans weren't so high at over 6%, which is crazy when it's a $70k car you'll lose thousands upon thousands of dollars on interest. I hate the matte blue and grey vs the rest of the world that gets gloss blue and grey, which I'd much rather see.
Am I the only one who worries about regular joe being put behind the wheel of a 601HP, 4800lbs ballistic missile? These things accellerate so fast and weight so much, there is no way that we can continue to get a decline in casualties in traffic when they start producing stuff like this....
the raptor r weighs almost 6000lbs and has 700+ hp PLUS a higher COG, worse visibility, etc. and there are lots of trucks/SUVs out there in the 5000+lb range that are just as (if not more) dangerous even if not as quick. and being as niche as the I5N is, i highly doubt there will be so many on the road that we'll see a marked uptick in traffic-related injuries/deaths
Fast ev's have been around for awhile....While I agree to a point (plenty of vehicles are about the 4k mark in weight, then you add some Americans in it ), I think the battery draining consequences of aggressive driving has helped keep it in check along with the stricter than usual safety measures found in EVs. It's actually a reason why I don't grief about short range EVs, those EVs are usually managing their charge throughout the week while daily driving.
Look in your mirror on any given day in the US. You will see a 6000lb+ truck or suv mere inches off your bumper driven by someone who knows nothing about the limits of their vehicle. Those are the ones that seriously worry me.
If you don't have the luxury of being able to drive different cars all the time, this give you lots of options that keeps a freshness and fun factor to the car. It's an added value that they don't appreciate
No reviewer really seems to have thought this through. I foresee them selling 'car packs' with engine noise, acceleration, RPM curves and gear shifts replicating other cars. Maybe even steering and suspension to some extent. For the Grand Turismo generation, this is where it's at.
Give this thing an F12 “skin“ that one could turn on and off for an occasional blast and I would certainly buy it. 95% of the time you’re in quiet EV mode, and then every now and then you could have some real fun. I think it’s a great idea for Hyundai to work on cloning some other really popular super sports cars that could be uploaded into this thing. For a fee of course!
You are describing a multi-industry profit driven scheme aimed at the Grand Turismo generation. That is not what we want. It is what we are forced to suffer through. The Grand Turismo generation is SICK of being behind a paywall. We know the development and engineering to make those sounds and settings are already done. We know those features were restricted behind a paywall just to take more money from us after product launch. This is the reason AAA game sales are tanking and indie developers are taking the spotlight.
My daily is a 991.1 911 Turbo S, and I bought the IONIQ 5 N because it’s a blast!. I have a hard time choosing between the two. The shifting both on the street and track is fantastic! You guys missed it!
100% agree with Jack on this one. I agree with Mark that the sound needs to be fixed, and they can make it sound like a real car now with a good audio engineer. If there are Assetto Corsa modding teams that can make a car sound 100% accurate, hyundai can do it too. Outside of that, in actually really surprised how negative mark is about the shifting. That's basically the equivalent of saying manual transmissions suck to drive because they're slower on a track and it's more work. As a car enthusiast, fuck your one gear EV. In my opinion all sports EVs should have simulated shifting.
Just a matter of time until you download different/better engine sounds. Just another over the air update. I wouldn’t sweat it. I give hyundai kudos for taking a risk on having some fun.
Thanks, but no thanks, if I want engine noise, I'll buy a petrol car. This is like CVT fake shifting, "rugged" crossover SUVs that will fall apart after 5 mins of actual off roading and plant based burgers.
is it really? Kia and Hyundai scrap cars for completely new models every 3-4 years. There's going to be a completely redesigned Ioniq 5 and they will completely drop support for this one.
Hello! 50+ here and I can't wait to get one. I'd get one sooner but for some practical matters. However, I will have a 5 N in my garage by February, at the latest. I think this speaks to a lot of people my age. It's got the grandma-mode which we like for daily driving but then some uber power for fun times in the twisties. In this way, we can justify the purchase to our partners. ;)
I’m 40. Can afford this. And do want this. People like me exist.

Well, I do believe this thing will find it's buyer, but I agree with guys here. Majority of people 35 and up will prefer something like BMW X3 M for this price. Yes, BMW has less power and numbers are not so competitive, but you do get a better handling, lighter car, real sounds, better interior, better range and these things are still valuable for older people. I think this is the reason why you will have to wait like 3 - 5 months to get a manual Integra now. The demand is so high! Same with manual Cadillacs and M3...
But see I love efficient low cost to run vehicles. Always have. The fact that I can now have one that’s also fast is what I’m after. I realize I’m the exception and most people aren’t like me. But I’m betting there are enough people like me to make this thing a pretty good option. And at the very least this will make other efficient evs seriously consider adding fake gears and sound.

@@mad636man Are you sure it will be lower cost? This thing will loose half of it's value when leaves the dealer room. High-performance BMW don't loose their value like the normal BMWs and definitely not like Korean cars. Also, Korean cars are not the benchmark of reliability, no one knows what will happen with their first high-performance electric car. Besides this, if you drive this like a maniac, you will have a battery for around 100 miles, while BMW still gives you around 300. Battery replacement in 150k miles will cost you another $25k if you do not want to stay with 120-150 miles of real range.
The reference to Clarkson was spot on, this is Mark, he didn't want to like this vehicle from the start, and he doesn't get the reasoning behind the car , I'm on Jacks side, Hyundai could have released this with none of the gimmicks but then it would just be like every other EV with some extra aero stuff and nobody would be talking about it, all the user software tweaks are so the driver can get involved in what the car is doing. I think Hyundai have done a great job of not only making it look great but making it different to every other boring EV they have made it fun and engaging, I didn't realise Toyota have made an EV Camry because that's what Mark sounds like he is driving on a daily. Jack has more of an understanding of this car, I would have like to see him take it around the track as he is a much better driver than Mark and could have appreciated what Hyundai have achieved, and made it perform much better than Camry man, sure it's not perfect but what car is ?
On multiple occasions, Clarkson would often lament that an amazing car he drove didn't feel special, or interesting, or was too fast, or try to kill him. For those reasons, he wouldn't like an otherwise technically amazing car. Hammond's response was "so the car would be better if it were worse." Jeremy's response was always an enthusiastic "YES!" This is how I feel about the I5N. All of the gimmicks don't make the car faster. The simulated shifting slows the car down (if you're just aiming for 0-60 times) because they emulate the inherent weakness of ICE compared to electric. The sounds are silly and dumb. The fact that you can bang off the Rev limiter, lug the "engine", and get caught in the wrong gear are all silly. But they are executed so well that if you didn't tell someone, they might genuinely believe they were driving an ICE vehicle. All of the stupid stuff might give the car personality and make it interesting. In a sea of EVs that all sound and drive the same, this one could be just a little better because it's worse.
There are almost no road cars that you can take to 10/10ths on a track in bone stock form and not be frustrated or disappointed in something. The fake gears are to lend sense of drama if you are on a back road. If you want an EV that also has some of the driving engagement you get from an enthusiasts gas powered car, this is how you do it and people will be willing to pay for it.
For thr first time, Savage Mark is missing the point, when Track Jack is always enthusiastic and welcoming technical effort such as this, to encourage them rather to beat on them...

His comments during the track portion sounds like N-Pedal mode is on and he doesn't understand how it affects braking, turn in and rotation. You can see N-Pedal mode is active when they're sliding around on track. It's a mistake to switch on all the "N" stuff and thrash it without understanding what the setting does. Getting a result which is counter to most (all?) other reviewers should've made them rethink the "N" settings they enabled rather than clowning around in a one-pedal mode and expecting it to behave like an ICE car.
N-pedal is like i-pedal x500...he doesn't know that! Yes it's 5000+ Lbs, but the "technology" & "all the testings for over 3yrs" was designed. He clearly didn't do research on this vehicle, he just hates it.
i love reviews where yall disagree. i def agree w Jack tho on this one. as a BRZ owner this is the first EV that seems fun and interesting outside of like a Lucid Air Sapphire
Good debate guys :-) I've had my significantly modified (sleeper) BMW 3-Series Touring for ten years, and it's easily last for a further ten. It's very well set up, engaging, and (for my needs) just the right size. There's no pressing need for me to replace it, except I'm becoming increasingly tired of maintenance (oil changes, transmission fluid changes, diff oil changes, etc), and the ZF transmission not giving a sense of immediate drive (torque converter). The Ionic 5N is currently the only, and I do mean the ONLY, EV that would make me switch from ICE. In overall terms, and the engineering that's evident beneath the skin, I think Hyundai has created an excellent package.
It seems like this is one of the rare occurrences where Jack's and Mark's opinions don't align. However, based on my short test drive experience with this car, I would side with Jack, especially regarding the fake sound. IMO the artificial sound in the loniq 5N felt much better than in any other EVs l've driven, as it projects sound from both the front hood and the rear (where the engine and exhaust would be located), which I think was the key to creating a somewhat realistic sound effect. Like how Jack mentions in 16:07, considering how some performance cars nowadays add horrible sounding fake noises anyways, the noise that the Ioniq 5N made honestly wasn’t really that bad at all… Sure I see how an EV mimicking an ICE car may not be the ultimate solution for making EVs more fun, I would say it was an intriguing enough approach that deserves credit. I though agree on Mark that the price point of the Ioniq 5N is the biggest hurdle for the vehicle - not because the car is objectively expensive for its performance, but there are so many great ICE options for the money, and is a far reach for the typical hot hatch buyers who would most likely be interested in one of these.
Confused as to how Mark hated this on the track while every other reviewer has been blown away? Like all of them, even pro race car drivers. While this is my go to channel- love you guys and your honestly, this review reminds me of my kid who hates his haircut before the scissors come out of the drawer?
Mark is always extremely hard on cars that claim to be 'track focused' - see GR Corolla. He wants cars that are actually great at 10/10ths, and most fall apart before getting to that limit.
Well, it doesn't make total sense to me either, I think it's old-man crotchety coming thru, but I still appreciate it. It seems that when pressed, the quality of the sound was the biggest issue. Which I can appreciate, it's a personal preference. If the sound had better fidelity, maybe his opinion would have been different. But it may just be him getting used to something new
@@cloudyview Before he expects a car like this to be flawless on the track, can he even drive anywhere close to a pro? From what I’ve seen, his skills aren’t even at a 5/10 level. How can he judge the car’s potential or overall performance when his driving is mediocre at best? Maybe he should try taking it for a full two laps around the Nürburgring before calling it ‘trash.’
I traded in my ticking time bomb daily driver STI for an Ioniq SE AWD 2 months ago. It is delightfully playful, and with traction and stability off you can get it properly sideways on power, something my STI couldn't do without a ton of trail breaking and quick weight transfer. I had no expectation this would be a sporty choice as I purchased it as an appliance car, but I have tons of fun on back roads in my "5000 lb SUV." I can only imagine how much better this N must be. I wish I could flash tune the fake shifts into my car, but you can keep the noises lol.
I'm a RS3 owner. I really wanted to hate it. Test drove one and I'm mostly there. The suspension is bad on rough roads. It's heavy but it's also very fun. NACS comes Q4 and hopefully the add the HUD next year.
I think it’s cool what Hyundai was trying to achieve. It’s much more enthusiastic than my 2024 model 3 performance. It’s a step in the right direction.
I think the question "Is it necessary?" is quite redundant here. Most of the 'features' in modern cars feel more optional than necessary anyways. As others have stated: you probably won't be looking to buy a car like this if you don't care for those particular features. The question you should be asking instead is: "do I want /like this?" and "Is it worth the price FOR ME?"
A big thing is cause it’s a Hyundai, I’ve noticed they almost always get picked apart more than other competitors which is fine. But the experience they had seems to not match most others which I found odd.
The Ioniq 5 isn’t for me either but I sure appreciate that Hyundai is still making an effort to make products for enthusiasts and to make EV’s more fun.
Mark shit the bed. Jack tried to save him. WOW! I’m 51 and love it! Where was the #1 take away? “Hyundai gave us a EV with real world track ability and a battery pack that doesn’t over heat after one launch, and has the first ever thermodynamic technology to go 10/10ths w/o penalty.” Mark owes Hyundai a BIG apology! The gimmicks work in this car…..first time ever in automotive history. Turn it off when you don’t want it. It really helps on the track, hitting apex on-off ramps, etc. The e-shift is so much fun. EVERY EV gets boring after newness wears off…….but the Ioniq N keeps the party alive with all the simulations. Jack gets it! Freaking love you guys. Cone hat for Mark in the corner. Popsicle for Jack. Every EV today is a rich mans toy. For me, it’s my weekend fun taking on all comers! Having so much fun and lots of smiles! My first EV.
@@NomenClature-o8sActually it would help. The simulated gears have set ratios, so they can help the driver sense what speed they're at, and get into a rhythm. When I am track driving, I don't look at the speedo much, and the gears and engine note give me important info, and are fun.
I've tracked this thing regularly for months and it definitely has no issues stopping. My RS6 faded on braking way before the i5n does. You were also at
... this is bizarre!... why are these guys so constipated about this car?... it's like they are contorting themselves into a position where they can not like the car, even mock it...they focus on its cost while ignoring that it punches way above its weight class (0-60 3.0sec, 1/4mi 11.1@123mph)... they criticize its fake synthetic noise... yet how is it essentially different from all the C8 owners who rush out to change the exhaust to get a more engaging sound...and many genuine enthusiasts , including this 71yo, will be interested in a vehicle that can do all this and pick up the week's groceries and later carry all his track stuff to his late afternoon XC practice...😊
Step 1: Hyundai becomes title sponsor for the next Forza Horizon game. Step 2: Take the meticulously sourced induction and exhaust audio, torque curves, gauge clusters, etc from the game with new partnership. Step 3: Enjoy your irl sim racing rig that is otherwise practical and usable. Imagine having a LFA DLC or a 458 Speciale expansion pack. I'm curious if going the Forza route would remove legal barriers to emulate sounds from other manufacturers because other than WRC, Hyundai doesn't really have their own history of impressive sounding cars to choose from. Gimmick or not, having a quiet and comfortable ev for commuting but then switching to an Aventador to carve up some backroads on the weekend is an appealing concept to me
I like your channel, but good lord Mark needs to take some happy pills. Made one of the more exciting new EVs seem like he was driving a first gen Leaf. Slap a Lucid badge on it and it's all joy.
Saying it's not fun with a huge smile is not a stellar endorsement of one's opinion. There is a disconnect there, between the reality and what he wants the reality to be. He wants it not to make sense and not be fun, so he says so with a huge grin on his face. Look how many times he has a smile on his face in the entire street driving portion. It's just brand snobbery.

I have waited for YEARS for the right EV to come along and I've had my Ioniq 5N for three months now - it is super fun to drive and an incredibly versatile daily driver. L2 charging is a breeze and my electric bill went up by a mere $70 a month. Does one feel the weight on full tilt on the brakes? Absolutely, and it's kind of astonishing what the combinded regen and disc/friction brakes achieve when you learn to trust the engineering behind the system! I have noticed a few reviewers just don't want to like this car right off the bat, due to some boxed-in and clearly biased beliefs and it shows in their videos. I can only imagine the conversations when Henry Ford brought the Model A to market "we don't need a faster horse". Well... fact of the matter is - we have to do something collectively to reduce emissions and electric cars are clearly a step into the right direction. One very fact that all reviewers fail to recognize - this car's systems all stay cool under any circumstance. I don't think I have seen the rear motor beyond 165°F and the battery beyond 95°F on full tilt - it's a heavy 600 HP car and the brakes stay cool - with that, they work. In comparison, my previous tuned Elantra N consistently got oil temperatures of 241°F and the brakes boiled to the point of non-braking... Talk about efficiency. This car is fun. Period.
The problem for me with EVs is the linear torque, while awesome practically, just doesn't FEEL as fast as it should. Having torque interrupted and kicked back in over and over keep it refreshing.
Only had mine for a week but it's the most fun I've had in a car. Love that it's silly when I want it to be or a chill cruiser with all the adaptive stuff for everyday drives. Cool with disagreeing opinions, drive what ya like and don't worry about what makes others happy.
@@RONderluck Plaid and N are not really comparable. N makes your head spin in twists and turns while in Plaid all you have to do is press your head against the seat for that straight line raw torque. The sound helps. Especially if you are not one driving it. It is worse in rear seat in the 5N, I was able to sit trough ~10 laps before I needed longer break.
Poor takes on this car. Trying to pick holes in a brilliant and transformative SUV does little to what this vehicle actually is and can do. Having owned one for a little over a month I can call BS on what they are saying. And by the way - comparing it to sports cars and muscle cars misses the point. The Ionic 5N is an SUV that can outperform most ICE vehicles that are far more expensive and of lighter weight. The Ionic 5N can act like a reliable and quiet family SUV or a beast with the flick of a switch. Give it up for Hyundai on this EV!
Good review but I think these guys and many other reviewers forget EVs are a multipurpose tool. It’s for the person that can’t have multiple cars but is still trying to have fun. And having these “gimmicks” and something that can literally do multiple Nurburgring laps adds to the fun
I love watching auto journalists give their opinions on certain cars, especially when they are so different. Mark seems to shit all over this car whilst looking like he's having a blast while driving, and the majority of other journalists seem to love the 5N and the direction Hyundai is going with their EV technology.
I will take Chris Harris' opinion over Marks 24/7. Mark is novice driver at best. On track, the car is good. Just look at some other PROFESSIONAL reviews. I would never buy one, but I give props to Hyundai for stepping out on a limb. And the engine sound is from a Elantra N.
This is absolutely the only electric car on the market right now that I'd be willing to have a crack at.... I am surprised at the sneery dislike for it but all the features that that Mark doesn't like are the things that'd keep me interested.
This review is odd and passive aggressive in some ways. It always seems like Mark and Jack look down on Hyundai overall (barring the Elantra N), making jokes about the E-GMP platform etc. I haven’t seen them do this with other manufacturers. They spent so much time in the engineering of the 5N, but very little time setting up the car for track use and criticized it as being unruly around the corners. I’ve driven this car many times around the track, and it is one of the most predictable EV to drive around corners if you set it correctly. Only Taycan compete as a track EV (haven’t driven the Rimac). I can’t think of one reviewer, out of dozens, who claimed the 5N is unruly around corners. Mark went into this review with a strong bias of what an EV should be, a quite daily commuter rather than taking the 5N for its intended purpose, a fun trackable EV that’s bringing back the joy of ICE driving. Sure the sound is artificial when you rev it while parked, but once you start shifting through the fake gears while driving, your brain becomes pretty convinced it has real gears and sound. Their conclusion is you can get a BMW or Audi ICE car for more fun, but they fail to mention those cars are not practical daily drivers and lack space for 5 adults and luggage. There is no EV or ICE SUV/CUV that competes with the 5N in this price range.
Funny how Mark keeps talking about “our mixed feelings” when it seems to be clearly “his personal” opinion. Amazing also how his view is so different from just about every other reviewers thoughts. … whilst complaining bitterly about how “awful it is” yet still with a massive smile… Clearly a fascinatingly polarizing vehicle.
with all due respect, mark is wrong. he says the car is stupid, pointless, and isn't fun on one hand, then on the other, he has the biggest smile, is *literally* laughing out loud and IS DRIVING MARKABLY BETTER with the sound turned on. he seems like a stick in the mud. or a fudd. yes, it's expensive. yes, the range is a bit less than other cars. but, damn, it's just awesome to drive! love mine.
The whole Ioniq N is unnecessary at $70K and you can get a regular one for $20K less... but its just very fun and great to have the option. Not sure its worth $20K extra, but its an amazing option for folks who want it.
Both of them are jizzing themselves driving it and then criticise it the entire time?? If it had a Honda badge they'd love it Its the best EV driving car available.
Now do Cybertruck
@@YuenanCao it’s cool. Neat engineering overshadowed by a man child over promising and under delivering more than is necessary.
"While it is cool, it is completely unnecessary."
Sometimes that's the best part.
I miss my 95 Camry. Great car
It's interesting that this attitude didn't show up in 911 Dakar review lol
90s corollas have still more soul and are more fun to drive than most modern cars!
I appreciate how Mark and Jack are willing to express opposing opinions in this review and others. I'm more aligned with Jack on the 5 N. It might not be brilliant at 10/10ths but everywhere else I think it's an absolute hoot compared to every other EV I've driven.
nice! that's actually praise from a sports car / muscle car channel. Appreciate your work as well.
221 miles in warm climates and half of that in cold climates is brilliant? LMFAO SMH

There are no good Japanese EVs.

Almost seems like a lemon in this vid 😅.
I think they were on a mission to say something different.
I suspect their settings for the track might not have been optimal.

If it can be whatever you want it to be at the push of a button, then there’s less of an innate non-fungible character to connect to, and there’s less of a sense of enjoying a car which has been made “for you.”
A lot of contemporary cars suffer from this, but it’s most pronounced with EV’s these days.
Couldn’t agree more. Very well said!

Mark is hating on the sound effects for no reason other than “it’s unnecessary”. Dude all modern tech and luxury features are unnecessary, what are you talking about
Rather, other people want more sounds...
They asked hyundai to make 8-cylinder, 10-cylinder, and 12-cylinder sounds and add them...
@@chaostar88 that will make it fake Hyundai car, Hyundai is using their own Elantra N sound as to stick through with Hyundai N cars.
Love my Ioniq 5 N. It's like owning three cars in one. 2 months in and the honeymoon period shows no signs of going away anytime soon.
The honeymoon period comes to an abrupt end once you try to warranty anything battery related.
It's was that duality that I thought was very interesting. Mark didn't like it. Smooth EV if you want. Rowdy performance SUV any time you want.

0:35 FYI Jeremy Clarkson LOVED it, in his Sunday Times review.
This is a tough one. This is the first time I've seen content on this car where the host wasn't smiling and laughing the entire time. I like the idea of quiet stealthy speed while also being able to attack a back road with SOME engagement. In my opinion for a first go-round this is a cool car.

Hey you sound like a car enthusiast!
I never saw the sonic boom with the fake shifts in any review until now, that is hilarious
you can turn the sonic boom off, the brubble off.. there is a setting on that, this car got almost similar with racing game where u can set most things.. it's good..

Said as they're laughing their rear ends off with the biggest smiles on their faces LOL.
@@rosgoncharuk2403When literally 90% of the ppl who have driven it claim it to be great and you run into mark who wants to be a contrarian
They are laughing at it not with it

I was blown away after my test drive on how awesome it was (driving, comfort, and looks in and out) and all the cool convenience features, although the US car doesn't get the HUD nor sunroof which is dumb. I would have bought it if the dealer wasn't charging $2k markup and the interests rates on car loans weren't so high at over 6%, which is crazy when it's a $70k car you'll lose thousands upon thousands of dollars on interest.
With aggressive enough regen braking in addition to substantial physical brakes, EVs can brake as well, if not shorter than many ICE vehicles.
The trx was 6000lbs with 700hp. The demon has 840hp and is 4000lbs. The hummer ev has 1000hp and is 9000lbs. But this is the car you take issue with
If you don't have the luxury of being able to drive different cars all the time, this give you lots of options that keeps a freshness and fun factor to the car.
Jesus Christ
Yup, it’s all software anyway and if they make it open source the possibilities are endless.
Next it’ll be a Hyundai battle pass

100% agree with Jack on this one. I agree with Mark that the sound needs to be fixed, and they can make it sound like a real car now with a good audio engineer. If there are Assetto Corsa modding teams that can make a car sound 100% accurate, hyundai can do it too.
Outside of that, in actually really surprised how negative mark is about the shifting. That's basically the equivalent of saying manual transmissions suck to drive because they're slower on a track and it's more work.

Hammond's response was "so the car would be better if it were worse." Jeremy's response was always an enthusiastic "YES!"
This is how I feel about the I5N.
Y’all are literally describing the definition of “gimmick”
You guys were complaining the whole time on the track but looked like you were having an absolute blast.

Good debate guys :-)
I've had my significantly modified (sleeper) BMW 3-Series Touring for ten years, and it's easily last for a further ten.
Like how Jack mentions in 16:07, considering how some performance cars nowadays add horrible sounding fake noises anyways, the noise that the Ioniq 5N made honestly wasn’t really that bad at all…
Sure I see how an EV mimicking an ICE car may not be the ultimate solution for making EVs more fun, I would say it was an intriguing enough approach that deserves credit. I though agree on Mark that the price point of the Ioniq 5N is the biggest hurdle for the vehicle - not because the car is objectively expensive for its performance, but there are so many great ICE options for the money, and is a far reach for the typical hot hatch buyers who would most likely be interested in one of these.
i think it’s the best ev on sale atm for car people
Personally I’d take a lucid pure, even though I’ve driven neither lol
It easily is. You have to drive this and other EVs to know this. If you haven't your just spouting nonsense.
But it may just be him getting used to something new
Mark is 85 years old inside. He grew pessimistic and grumpy for these last couple years.

I'm sure they can update the sound modules via a over-the-air update?
Imagine having a LFA DLC or a 458 Speciale expansion pack. I'm curious if going the Forza route would remove legal barriers to emulate sounds from other manufacturers because other than WRC, Hyundai doesn't really have their own history of impressive sounding cars to choose from. Gimmick or not, having a quiet and comfortable ev for commuting but then switching to an Aventador to carve up some backroads on the weekend is an appealing concept to me
Didn't Jeremy Clarkson actually like this thing?
I like your channel, but good lord Mark needs to take some happy pills. Made one of the more exciting new EVs seem like he was driving a first gen Leaf. Slap a Lucid badge on it and it's all joy.
Saying it's not fun with a huge smile is not a stellar endorsement of one's opinion. There is a disconnect there, between the reality and what he wants the reality to be. He wants it not to make sense and not be fun, so he says so with a huge grin on his face. Look how many times he has a smile on his face in the entire street driving portion. It's just brand snobbery.
Well…. He’s laughing at how bad the car drives on track, not because of driving experience itself.
@@noahkim8377 He had a big ole smile on the street drive. He was having fun the whole time. It doesn't square with his statement.
@CaptainFordo21wait so that's why it did the ring in 7:45 . because it's bad hey??? 😂😂. Go and check the myp ring time and get back to me.

The simulated sound helps with motion sickness that I’ve gotten from driving a Tesla. So I’m down for it. Yes it could be more realistic.
I don’t get motion sick in my Plaid
@@RONderluck Plaid and N are not really comparable. N makes your head spin in twists and turns while in Plaid all you have to do is press your head against the seat for that straight line raw torque. The sound helps. Especially if you are not one driving it. It is worse in rear seat in the 5N, I was able to sit trough ~10 laps before I needed longer break.

Great timing. I just saw one on the road yesterday. I thought it looked cool but I love that SG has done an in depth video on it.
I always thought Jack was the straight man. I am so happy he is living his best sonic boom life.
Normally the only sonic booms i experience are on the golden throne. This is a more positive experience
Yours is gold? Probably made from all the bullion you’re haulin
You should watch the hellcat redeye video of theirs jack goes full primate in that one
당신말이 맞아. 5N 은 입맛대로 설정할수있고 트랙모드로 설정하면 포르쉐처럼 즐길수있는 유일한 전기차야
Funny how Mark keeps talking about “our mixed feelings” when it seems to be clearly “his personal” opinion.
Amazing also how his view is so different from just about every other reviewers thoughts.
… whilst complaining bitterly about how “awful it is” yet still with a massive smile…
Clearly a fascinatingly polarizing vehicle.
I have an ionic 5 and love it, guess some people just don’t get FUN 🤩
Loved the soul music transition to the track segment. More of this please!
with all due respect, mark is wrong. he says the car is stupid, pointless, and isn't fun on one hand, then on the other, he has the biggest smile, is *literally* laughing out loud and IS DRIVING MARKABLY BETTER with the sound turned on. he seems like a stick in the mud. or a fudd. yes, it's expensive. yes, the range is a bit less than other cars. but, damn, it's just awesome to drive! love mine.
Haha, you think it’s expensive? Then you should get another job.

Are you dumb? They have high regards for the Elantra n and the palisade.
Keep spamming that narrative fool🤣🤣🤣🤣
The whole Ioniq N is unnecessary at $70K and you can get a regular one for $20K less... but its just very fun and great to have the option. Not sure its worth $20K extra, but its an amazing option for folks who want it.
Honestly this car is one of the most exciting cars that have come out recently. It makes me so excited on how EVs can actually be enjoyable
Both of them are jizzing themselves driving it and then criticise it the entire time?? If it had a Honda badge they'd love it
Its the best EV driving car available.
They didn't do research on Albert Biermann about this vehicle is why?!?!
