If you are over seeding and you do not have a thatch issue, ½” of thatch or more, or soil compaction issues, it is not necessary to aerate first. Aeration is primarily used when ground compaction is an issue and/or if thatch is greater than ½”. Many folks will aerate, to alleviate the issues mentioned earlier, and then broadcast seed as a means of over seeding. This method of seeding is not as efficient as using an over seeder.
