i found your channel randomly by searching for Lincoln Park since i was visiting Chicago. glad i searched because your channel is one of my favorites on RUclips. you deserve a lot more subscribers. great videos!
Huge amazing fave in Manhattan! Love this place so much and I visit whenever I am in NY! This is an establishment everyone should visit - top quality! The original store is the one to go to - it's my only go to for Russ and Daughter's. I love how the owners treat their staff. Integrity - like a family.
I’ve never seen or heard of anyone eating a bialy without cream cheese on it. You’ve got to try it again and eat it the right way before passing judgment. The rest of your video was spot on.
Hi James… I really like your videos and so look forward to watching them. It was funny as I was saying before you did “ why isn’t James having coffee with his bagel” as I know how much you love your coffee. I will try Russ and Daughters soon. Thanks for sharing your videos!
Thanks! I really appreciate it! Yeah, that was a big oversight on my part not getting coffee with my food, but that was the first thing I did after finishing my lunch.
Gotta try this. I once did a delivery order for Postmates at this restaurant and when I was an Uber driver I transported the owner he gave me a nice tip after I had a wild guess that he was the owner of Russ and daughters
One thing I miss about NYC is the smoked salmon I used to get at Citarella and bialy sandwiches for breakfast from the shop below where my office was located.
Your delivery style is excellent. I agree with you on the quality of Russ and Daughters. A bit pricey but the quality shines through. While you are downtown, you might want to try Veniero's for a coffee and pastry. The chocolate raspberry cake is pretty good. Best to you on this Memorial Day weekend
Thank you! I hope you're having a great weekend as well. Veniero's is a classic spot! I've never had the chocolate raspberry cake there yet, but I'll keep that in mind during my next visit. Thanks for the recommendation!
Slicing the bialy and [maybe toasting] putting a shmear of at least butter or some scallion cc would've changed your mind, surely. They're that much lighter than a bagel in volume. Your bagel looked exquisite... 😋👍❤🥯
Dear James. I have to insist on two things. The NYC tourist office should sponsor you for your effort to promote the gastronomic circuit. And second, how do you eat without worrying, and always be fit. Congratulations, your videos are very, very good
Love the inclusion of the place's history, great summary. And good move going on a rainy day. It's not surprising that you haven't visited the place until that day given the long wait times. I chose to go for the first time during the pandemic, and I barely waited 10 minutes. This is definitely one of those places that will satisfy. Their bagels aren't my favorite though. I usually go there and buy a pound of Lox, fish salad, smoked herring, and make the sandwiches at home with some of my preferred bagels, Philadelphia cream cheese and fresh condiments. BTW, if you want to try some killer Babka, get the Babka at Isaac's. It's right across the street from DiFara in Midwood Brooklyn. It's one of my favorite all time desserts ever and it's way better than the one here at Russ and Daughters IMO.
Thanks! Yeah, the short wait time was the only silver lining of the terrible weather. I know what you mean about the bagel. It was good, but the fish was the real star. Thanks for the recommendation about Isaac's. I actually went there the last time I went to Di Fara for a black and white cookie, which I enjoyed, but I'll definitely have to pick up the babka next time.
Brother, This Is My Favorite Place! Such Deliciousness At Every Corner Of The Store, Everything Is Fresh And Delicious! Enjoy That Gorgeous Bagel PS: You Gotta Put The Bialy In A Toaster To Heat It!
Hoping you do a video on Barney Greengrass, to give us a comparison between here and there. I saw a video that actually showcased the pastrami sandwich at Barney Greengrass, and it looked great. Would be awesome if you could give us your opinion on the bagel & lox and the pastrami there!
Another great video James I will be in Astoria on Saturday I want Chicago pizza can you tell me where to get off the N train for Pizzeria and UNO thanks so much
Luckily bagels and just cream cheese aren't too expensive. In this case the lox on my bagel really comprised about 90% of the cost. The fish is the expensive part.
James, far from NYC I buy frozen bialys from my local Publix super market. I’m sure they don’t remotely compare to the real deal bagels available to you, but their bialys are marginally improved by toasting, buttering and sprinkling with everything seasoning (perish the thought)! IIMHO, the best freshly made bagels in Florida are from the chain, Brooklyn Water Bagel, but their bialys are barely edible. R
Haha! I wish! That's a dream watch of mine though, but I was actually wearing the Seiko SKX009, which is still a nice watch, but nowhere near the price of a Rolex.
People say we European Jews have no good food. But Katz pastrami and Russ and Daughters proves this is wrong. I would take these and good gefilte fish over any Middle Eastern Jewish food. I wonder which is a better deal, this for $15 or Katz for $30? Probably this. I wonder which is more important in a good lox sandwich, the lox or the bagel. Probably the bagel, as good salmon is easy to find, but a good bagel, that''s a miracle. When my twin brother comes into NY from San Fran, we go for lox and bagels on the UES. What's your favorite bagel place in NY? If you like Russ, try the one in the Jewish museum, one of the most amazing museums I've been to, other than Museum of the Mentally Ill in Lausanne, Switzerland, also worth the trip.
That's a tough question. There's a lot of great bagel spots in NYC. Brooklyn Bagel and Coffee in Astoria is probably the spot I go to the most, but Russ and Daughters is still my favorite place for lox. I still have to try Barney Greengrass though.
I’ve had inconsistent experiences at R&D in terms of how much salmon they give you. I feel like they have the best salmon quality around, but they tend to skimp on it compared to the amount put on bagels from a local spot. You pay for the history and quality, just wish they’d be a bit more generous with the salmon.

Toast the bialy man and put cream cheese or butter on it otherwise i like your reviews they are very fair but you and the other you tube guy still are to hung up on the price there are bagels shops in Jersey that charge 12 bucks for cream cheese and lox
Yeah, I definitely should've had that toasted and with cream cheese. I do think I was a bit too harsh on the price. While Russ and Daughters may be above average in terms of their prices, they're not that much higher than the rest and they are one of the best.
It's expensive, especially the bagel sandwiches. The bagel by itself was $15, but that was mostly for the salmon on it. Everything came to about $21. Thankfully, it was well worth it!

Absolutely! It's a truly iconic NYC spot. I would go to it far more often if it wasn't as crowded, but the wait is worth it!

James-Great review. To me, toasting a fresh bagel should be punishable. However, a tip about the Bialys: slice carefully and toast.
Thank you! Yeah, that bialy would've been much better toasted.
@@Jamesnu I love a bialy toasted with butter.

Russ and Daughters is such a classic institution! You should also try BO’s Bagels on 235 W 116th St. They have one of the best bagels in NYC!
