txg.ca - Part one of our test of 2018 models of golf balls aimed at average swing speed players. We started by testing the Taylormade Project A, Srixon Q-Star Tour and Titleist Tour Soft to see how the performance varied between the different offerings. See which golf ball might be best for your game in this mid-range golf ball test.

Having tried all the Titleist range over the years, never found one to my liking. I played the Chrome Soft from its inception and found it a great ball UNTIL....we moved to Malaysia and they were very overpriced, so tried the Wison Duo range of balls. For my game the Duo Soft Spin 40 compression is longer, straighter and enough check spin around the green. A super ball at only Canadian $25/dozen. I was given some Titleist Tour Soft and have to say, that if I did not have the Duo ball, again for me, this would be my gamer ball, the first Titleist I really enjoy. As Ian and Matt keep reiterating" You need to get fitted for everything, including the ball", and as you can buy sleeves of 3, it is worth experimenting, at not a great cost, to see which one can improve your game. I think TXG will rule the You Tube golfing world very soon. As good as ever chaps 👏👏 I don't think I've ever praised someone so much in my life, even my wife 😂🤣😂
Project (A) and Q-Star Tour are awesome values which make the came consistent and more enjoyable for us mid-handicappers. I loved this videos and head to head, I asked for this and in usual fashion you more than delivered. Thanks guys really appreciate your efforts!
I was using the Taylormade tour preferred ball because it flies lower and I play a windy course , Lanark. Now I have been playing the project a and love them. Got them as a freebie at the tgi pro am in Turkey every march. So much so I even bought 40 yellow ones to practice with around the greens etc at our practice area so I am using the same ball as I'm playing. Swing seed for driver is about 105_108 and find these brilliant.
I've been gifted a dozen Project (a) and Tour Soft balls from some customers, and have played multiple rounds over the past few mornings at my local 6-hole Par 3 course. My totally mid-handicapper notes are very spot on with these TXG findings. But one thing I didn't pay enough attention to, was the difference in the launch angle between the two, I was only paying attention to the spin. So my findings after playing a dozen rounds using three of each ball off the tees were: Using middle irons like a 6, 7, 8, the two balls were pretty similar. Carried same distances. On longer 4 and 5 iron shots, the Tour Soft carried 4-5 yards longer, and obviously had less spin as they would bounce and roll a bit, while the Project (a) just stopped quicker. What caught me off guard was hitting the 9 and PW shots, and finding the Tour Soft landing short. They launched much higher on these shorter clubs, and I was solidly 4-5 yards shorter than Project (a). So overall, I found the Tour Softs to produce a more spread out gaping from 4 iron to PW. The Project (a) in comparison was more steady Eddie, longer on the short stuff, a little shorter on the long shots, and very consistent 10yd gaping between clubs. I was surprised how noticeably different these two balls played on a course I've played hundreds of times. The Project (a) seem to play much closer to V1 and TP5 in terms of feel, distances etc.
I am thrilled that found your channel. I just turned 61 a month ago, between lost distance and not being very good, I kind of lost interest. I play a pro v1 refurbished and project a balls I was wandering about. So thanks for doing these video's which sparked ny interest in trying different shaft's flexes, tip stiffness and such.
Did you start playing Project A regularly?
Great video, it is greatly appreciated. I have played rounds with all these balls and had I watched this video before your review I would say that the Titleist Tour Soft would fit me best. However it is the Project A that I have had the best results with. Just goes to show you that each persons swing is unique and you must test for yourself and I don’t mean that statement to detract from what you guys are doing. The tons of content and information you guys have produced is amazing, please keep up the good work! Can’t wait for more testing!
Four years after this video, you may be pleased/horrified to learn that your fans are still hanging on to every word/test result.
You are already planning to test budget balls and scuffed-up balls. So, I'm happy. I have been playing the Kirkland Performance +. in years passed, I have played the Noodle Long and Soft as well.
Mid- category: Srixon AD333
low- category: Wilson DX2 Soft
Also, most of us practice at a driving range where there are no premium balls (Titleist practice) so the comparison regular range ball (not rock hard but durable-lasts the whole season) vs. a gamer ball
And worn out driving range ball vs. gamer ball
Thank you guys! You rock!
How about a video explaining the relation between swing speed and the compression rating you should be playing. High swing speed needs low compression? Or visa versa, etc.
Tour soft has been a changer for me ! I’m consistently in the mid 70s the extra spin was killing me the extra roll out as help me so much. Great all around ball
I'm a 13 HC1 I've hit the Srixon Q Star Tour and Project A love them both! I have never tried the Tour Soft but all the Titleist seem pretty good!!
Perhaps, include the Pro V1 numbers that you've done in the past to these test. Screen shot it in when you put up 7ir / Driver / wedge number sets. It would give a good baseline as you move across ball segments and test. That is the only piece that is missing from this segment. Am I gaining : ball speed, height and distance, losing spin, but hitting a decent angle vs the ProV1 data set?...As always! you guys rock.
Great information and analysis. I went with the Project (a) and have been suitably impressed.
I just played q star tour and project a the other day. Q star feels a bit more firm like you say and it spun noticibily less and flew much higher. Glad I'm producing the same results as you guys!
Great video guys, I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. Totally new to golf and to date my all-round favourite is the TM Burner. Bought some Wilson Staff DX2 soft which are lovely balls to putt but for me fell way short of the Burner in all other departments.
I know you are looking for golf ball comments. But, I was particularly surprised to see such a great demo of a left handed swing. Since I'm left handed and there isn't that much out there of it. I also watched the long drive video and you looked like you were going to relocated your right shoulder with your swing.. Hope you are okay after that. But, your normal driving swing, looks great and I liked seeing the variation from mine on your weight shift.. Very cool videos. Oh the golf balls. Yep, clearly a great review of these lower end balls. thankx
As a 40yr old with 30yrs of golf experience I feel foolish looking back with some of my club and ball choice (too much spin in both categories) I never realized what I should have been buying and was more conscious of the price or a bargain. Your channel has really flipped my understanding of these factors and I won't buy anything anymore without getting completely fitted. Up until recently I played 913 D2 with Project A's. It was not uncommon for me to get backspin with a driver
WOW backspin with a Driver! Now that I would love to see👍
Glad we could help David!
@@banditbaker1675 I play off 4 and lived in Singapore for a couple of years. Very moist ground due to daily thunderstorms which made a mockery of my chipping when I first arrived. I used to drive with a high launch (913 D2 set to 8.5 using Project A's) at +3 AOA to max out distance. I'd get to my ball and the pitch mark was a foot ahead of the ball and playing partners with 10-15mph less than me would land 20ydr behind me and run up to me. Loved the Project A's for around the greens. Now in San Francisco and I'm 30yrds longer without changing anything. (And I'm now looking at AVX's)
Very impressive David, I struggle to get backspin with my Wedges. Many years ago I played on Sentosa, we never completed the round due to a Thunderstorm. But the course as I remember was in pristine condition.
Thank you very much guys. You've confirmed my feeling on the Project (a) and set my mind at rest over not being able to play the Q Star Tour (not available in NZ due to.....). I loved the Srixon Z Star until the price went through the roof here, so to know the Project (a) is as good as I'll get, is very reassuring.
Callaway SuperSofts are my favorite for the price range; I'm trying some Q-Stars and liking them so far. I have a bunch of yellow Bridgestone E6's refurbed (no scuffs) and having no issue whatsoever with them (12 HC). I'd like to try some project a's next! Was VERY pleasantly surprised by el cheapo Noodle Soft's earlier this year. Thanks for great videos!
Even more cheaper balls tested; Top Flight D2 Feel, Gamer, Gamer Tour (Urethane model), Wilson Ultra 500 Distance, Pinnacle, and other budget balls. Would be neat to see their specs compared to mid-range and top-range balls. Great work as always. Thanks.
Switched from ProV1x to ProjectA this year after 8 years of V1x. No complaints. Don't play as much anymore so it seemed silly to keep paying V1x prices. I would love to see you guys do a video on how these mid price balls perform at Matt's speed versus the speed for this video and also how the top tier balls perform at both speeds as well. I'd be curious to see specific performance advantages/disadvantages when the swing speed doesn't match the product design. Thanks for doing what you do, always fun to watch.
Looking forward to the rest of the 10 you have currently on the list. But I hope after you do one video explaining the combined results of all balls tested just to piece the data together. Well done again TXG!
Great video. Too many guys want to play the “Tour” ball but don’t pay attention to their actual needs.
This video confirmed what I suspected; that the TM Project (A) is a quality, high-spinning ball with a very soft feel. I have a slower swing speed and this ball works really well for me. I've never been able to create backspin on shots into the green, but now I can, with the Project (A). As always, thanks for the video and all the great information. I'll be interested to see the test of new vs. recycled balls?
Stephen Moxley. Ya interested too. Recycled or refurbed ProV vs project a
Love this, I currently have both the Project(a) and Tour Soft in my bag and like them both. You confirmed exactly what I thought I felt....i get better distance from the Tour Soft but like the project(a) on and around the green. My other choice early in the season is the Callaway Supersoft!
Great review, be interested to see you test the Vice Pro ball. Fantastic value & to me performs up there with the “premium” priced balls. Must say durability isn’t a great concern with me, like to use about 2 or 3 balls a round. 😀
Great video gentlemen. I just grabbed some Q-Star tour balls yesterday. I'm looking forward to seeing how these balls react to my swing in comparison to the Callaway Diablo Tour balls I normally use. Keep up the great content.
You got the Father's Day BOGO deal I would assume? I picked up 4 dozen for $60 ($15/dozen!)
From the sounds of this video, I made the right decision
@@bmil38 Yes, that's correct. I used the Q-Star tour balls this weekend and they were really good. They were softer off the face compared to the Callaway Diablo and gave me higher spin rates for great greenside control. Good luck with your set.
When you do the next test, would live to hear your opinion on the Bridgestone E6
Or taylormade noodles 👍
Great vid! For a high swing speed player(117 avg) that cant control the driver the Q star is fantastic with GAPR low off the tee.
Thank you for the high quality content. You are a great resource.
Loving this series of videos guys. Very useful to the average golfer. E6, Velocity and maxfli U4. Keep up the stellar work! Mich
Good idea on the scuffed golf ball test. I'd like to see that video.
Loved the Project (A) but I now use used ProV1s at half the price... but when I know I’m playing in a tournament or something a little more serious I use the Project (A) and love the spin around the green.
Looking forward to seeing how the Vice Tour stacks up.
I believe it is also very important for ball to hold flight in the wind.
Most social golfers will lose their ball before it got really damaged. The 2 best "value" golf balls I have tried are Callaway Supersoft, Srixon Tour Special and AD333. Apparently there is a AD333 Tour now.
I prefer that Urethane putting feel and the value buys are Project (a), Q-Star Tour and Kirkland Signature 3-piece.
To me I rate them by price as some brands has big promotional prices. Titleist for obvious reasons are very stringent on pricing. For premium balls I will buy the TP-5 here over the Pro V1 because it is over 10% cheaper at times; Pro V1 never have sale.
Most golf balls are pretty much the same off the driver but huge differences when it is windy. Fortunately, social golfers can change ball between holes. :)
Q-Star Tour they tested is the AD333 Tour
Another great video lads. Would love for yous to add recommendations of balls matched up to swing speeds and more importantly what balls to avoid if your swinging around 100mph with driver for example.
I currently play the Callaway Supersoft, but the Srixon Q-Star Tour might be my next purchase. I've tended to like the feel of the softer balls like Supersoft and Titleist DT Trusoft. After you test others in this category, it would be nice to compare the 'best' of each test.
Im about to try the Tour Soft 2020. Thanks for the review.
Could you test the Wilson Staff Duo? Also, their Optix line.
And the Duo Pro.
Very interesting.. I play the project a .. played lots of last and this seasons.. both good.. soft feel around the greens .. look forward to your choices in the remaining budget section.
And very much looking forward to the “scuffed” ball testing!!
Interesting stuff. 2 balls to look at...The Wilson Duo Urethane for around $30 and in the budget category, the Precept Laddie Extreme at around $20 for 2 doz. Both have outstanding performance for the price.
Good review….I would like to see some reviews on the callaway supersoft and superhot. The srixon soft feel and the q-star, also to see if the Kirklands are good or not because I hear some really like those balls but then others don’t at all. Also are matte balls any better than regular finish balls. And also compare the Titleist Tour soft with the DT trusoft. Thanks love your bids they rock!
Q Star Tour is my gamer. Great performance for the price, but I might have to buy and box of Project A.
Q star tour is an amazing middle of the road kind of ball. Good players can squeeze plenty of performance out of this thing @ a good value.
I'm 65 and found the q star to give me good distance off the tee and good workability around the greens since I don't have a high swing speed it's a really good ball.
Great test! thanks for clearing that up! love the Qstar tour but doesn't spin like the Project A but I do need the distance and the low compression
Hey guys, went to my local golf shop yesterday to get some Srixons. They were out and said that Srixon was bringing out a new line and would not be resupplying until then.
Great review as always. I typically go to these for winter play, mostly for their lower compression
I would love to see the Callaway Supersoft, Srixon QStar non tour, and the Bridgestone E6 soft.
I do want that non tour video. Maybe like tour vs non tour
I found Project A a few months ago. Tried it and it quickly became one of my favorites. I can’t tell the difference for me between Project A and the Pro V range. I get great performance from it at a cheaper price.
I’d like to see how much spin the matte finish balls produce. Ex: callaway super soft matte finish. In the hand they are much more “grippy” than any standard finish ball. Possible cheap option for free side spin without the premium cover cost.
Awesome review as usual. Choosing a golf ball is something I have always struggled with, even when I was playing much better golf. I still don't know where to start with what I should try or not with my swing characteristics, but some of the things you mentioned in this video makes me think I should compare the Tour soft and Project (a) ball.
Great video as usual. I'd like to see comparisons of these other balls with the Bridgestone B-RX and B-RXS or the still available B330RX and B330RXS.
Brilliant! Such a cool experiment. I know you guys get a million requests for videos. But I would really appreciate and maybe numerous others, a golf ball review on the Wilson Duo, Topflite Gamers, etc. Inexpensive balls with soft cores against better balls. Thanks guys and keep up the good work.
Great videos, guys. The testing point I have not seen is sidespin and its relation to compression, core composition and cover polymer.
My reason for asking: I’ve noticed that I lose the ProV1 faster OB than the Chrome Soft. So the peak yardage for a scratch player is nice to watch, but you are crushing and not curving the ball. I want to know what ball characteristics keep the ball on the course for imperfect hits.
Great review guys, please don't forget the Wilson lineup.
I have a mid swing speed (just) and previously played the Srixon XV but in the last year I have used either the Vice Pro Soft or TM Project (a) and without using statistical analysis found them to be similar.
Hey guys awesome amount of information. So my swing speed is high (driver head speed around 95-99mph) I find the Prov1 is great off the tee but once I start on the short games it's like it skips off the face with minimum spin, normally running off the backside of the green but if I switch ball to something softer like the Qstar it hits the greens and stops with a little spin back. what would you recommend for this?
Hello great content. What was the average driver club head speed during this tests?
I have been playing Q star tour, when the greens are watered these spin nicely. But the greens don’t get the watering regime that the tour courses get, so looking for a ball that spins more in general to compensate. I will try the project a
I've been up in the air for years on what golf ball to use. Currently gaming the Bridgestone e6 Soft. Would like to see this ball in the mix.
Then once you get them all reviewed that you want, so an overall of all the balls you did. Just to give an overall perspective of this level of balls
Great stuff. I have never played a Project A ball, but I just might now. I would love to see the high end Vice and Snell.
Started playing the Z-Star with my new 585 irons....feel awesome, fly great, and talk about spin I have never had before!
Still seem to be getting a "higher" ball flight (over 100 feet) 🤷🏻♂️
Tried Titleist Pro V but too expensive and harder than I liked and more recently the Wilson DX2 for a softer feel, which lacked grab. Found the perfect compromise in the Wilson DX3U (urethane), soft compression and plenty of grab around the greens at a fraction of the price of a premium ball. In my tests not much much difference off the tee or fairway, into and around the greens are where you’ll find the differences
Finally!!!
Thank you so much guys !!!
I can’t wait to try the project A now !
It would be interesting to test the Bridgestone golf balls too if possible...
I’m curious to know why Tiger chose them...
Thanks again guys !!!
Hi guys, just lately I have been using decathlon’s golf balls , very good for the money.dont know if you can get them in Canada but they are a french sporting goods company
Just noticed the Mizuno JPX ball is incredibly cost effective over here in NZ, I'd love to see it thrown in the ring for all the mizunophiles in your audience, cheers.
Great stuff.
With your expertise, equipment and Iron Byron I think you have a great opportunity here. With the coming swing robot certain things may be easier.
Could be interesting to hear things like "if you have a tendency loosing balls because slice or hook - this is a ball that may lower the risk" or "if you are always short of green this one can work" or "if short, take an extra club and with this ball you may have a steeper angle of decent"...
Would be interesting to se how these balls behave when Iron Byron really hit the ball - in comparison to tour balls.
Shorter due to compression?
Also - if I hit a ball 260 yards but do not want to spend 50 usd for a box because I loose 3 balls around (woods/water or just cannot find it in the semi-rough).
With 2020 coming up
New sticks in the bag I've been evaluating all balls I've played in the last 2 years.
I'm 62
4 index
Driver speed 95
7 iron 154 yds
Q star tour and the Project A to me, are virtually the same ball, with these 2 exceptions
Q star is much higher flight
Q Star also gets worn quicker
My choice Project A
Cheers
For me as a newbie, it's a big headache choosing balls. Each manufacturers should have a sort of chart or matrix to compare their own balls. (include older models as well) All I see on each model's description is good performance , great distance, excellent feel. So all of them are good? Then I would later hear review saying this ball is good for this and that ball is for such and such. Very confusing. Well, at least now I'm learning them from you guys. Thanks a lot.
Thank you. Can you please review new premium balls v premium balls that have sat in water for a few months (ie, lake balls)?
Always liked the project A. Then I tried last years chrome soft and preferred that ball, until they went from 45 a dozen to 59, so it's back to the project A for me. That srixon is a close second though.
How does the spin effect the ability to shape shoots right and left? Are low spinning balls going to move right and left less?
Noodle, golfspy if I’m not mistaken said in their study that a low swing speed should play a firmer golf ball for distance???
Have you tested the Kirkland 3piece golf ball?
I am a "value" shopper. I always look for the maxim performance at the most reasonable price. Not the cheapest and not usually the very best performance but very good performance at a very good price. I would like to see a Maxfli Tour / Tour X ($25 dz) up against Bridgestone E6 and Kirkland 3 piece.
I can't wait to have to worry about how durable a ball is!
Right now if I get through a round on three balls - I am WINNING!
;)
It's a win for me if I come out with the same number or more balls than I started with. Or maybe one less but a nicer ball
Hey Matt, understanding you did this test at an average swing speed, but what did you see if you tested it at your full swing speed? I just bought a box of Project A (normally play tp5x but have been losing them lately as I change my swing) and I hit my 7 iron about 185yrds. Love to hear your thoughts.
The price point of these balls is just right under the price of previous year tour balls… I have found that there’s some really solid offerings in the low 20$ range that being of course like everybody else’s mention the Wilson staff duo! I really like to duo but the titliest trusoft is outstanding ball for 22$ it plays better than the velocity which is 5-8$ more expensive. I feel like the low 20 price range is the sweet spot for the average golfer that like some performance and doesn’t want to play a tour ball because of price and swing speed. PS if you want to feel like you have some real spin on wedges.... They weren’t lying about that Kirkland signature three-piece
What I got from this video I think. Swing speed with driver 90-100mph use Project A or a Tour soft. Swing speed 100-105 use Q-Star tour. Swing speed 106+ use a premium ball. Z-Star, pro v1 etc...
Great review this guys :) I look forward to you testing some more I also play project a excellent ball for the money but would like to see bridgestone's RX & RX's .
Interesting video. I'd like to see the srixon ad 333 titleist next and the Bridgestone b330s
If I were a better golfer I would now be giving Titleist Tour Softs a serious look but given I'm not a very good player, I am looking forward to your review of "budget balls". I would also like to hear your opinions about best balls for high handicap and senior players. As an aside, I've watched almost all of your review and fitting videos (and really enjoy them) but I don't understand how expensive equipment/fittings can benefit high handicap players who most likely have problems with their fundamentals. It's one thing for an 18 hdcp trying to become a 12 or a 12 hdcp trying to become a 7 to pay up for a bump in performance but how much difference does equipment make for a 27 hdcp who dreams of becoming an 18? Should players at that level really be spending $500 for a driver and $5 a piece for balls?
Love to see the vice drive vs other distance balls and soft feel vs superset
As an older, slower swinging, 18 handicap golfer I recently started using TP5 . I made the switch really just because I fancied a change to something new. I like the ball very much and I feel it works well with my main “strength” in golf, the short game.
The question I now have is would the Project A ball suit me better as I need help getting distance and direction off the tee !
If we take price out of the evaluation do you think I should stick with the TP5 ball ?
Many Thanks, in advance, for your response.
If you can get on a launch monitor with both Tim, it would be worthwhile to compare if the Project A produced any more ball speed for you. That would be it's only advantage, so if they produce similar speeds/distances in your case then stick with the Project A.
Vice Pro, Vice Pro Soft, Snell MTB Black, MTB Red, Maxfli U/6.
I love the Project A ball. I'd love to see Matt do a test at full swing speed to see the Uber spin action
Hi guys. great vid. Would like to get your thoughs on the following: currently am gaming ProV1 but seem to get a lot of spin on approach shots, when the greens are soft. Not so when dry. Tend to take a divot. However, am lsing distance on my drives. What can i do?
Also have you thought of testing the Wilson Staff DX3 Urethane? Seems to be a similar price point to these 3 balls.
Keep up the great work.
Great review. I’ve just started to check out Snell Red & Black balls. $20 less than premium and very comparable performance perhaps. Would be cool to see how they test out
Paul Nordin I’ve played 3 nine hole rounds with the Snell Black ball and it gives me decent distance and good performance on pitch shots. I didn’t hit enough greens to know how it stops on longer iron shots. It lives up to Snell’s advertising claims. A very good, high quality ball in my opinion.
Ian, have you tested the various Bridgestone balls?
I’ve heard a lot about the Vice pro 4 piece golf ball
Thanks again guys, always appreciate your input on all the equipment! Can your test the Titleist Velocity too please.
The Scuff ball vs new will be very interesting!
Çç cĺ!!,dd9d,,ďďďďc
What are your thoughts on the taylormade tour respone? I am a 15 handicap.
I would like to see Snell MTB 4 and 3 pce balls, as they claim high performance and lower price. I have played them and like them a lot. My game is plagued by penalty shots, as I have a high swing speed and the dispersion circle is way too big. So a ball for the player who has an above average swing speed but would help to keep the ball in play more! Thanks!
Hey Guys. Thank as always. Another great video with a terrific review.
Can you look to compare the three I’ve seen golf digest suggest against the tour level balls?
Cut, Vice, Snell. The Cut Blue and Cut Grey seem to be catching on and the Blue being the highest spin ball on this year’s spin chart and hotlist.
How about the NXT? My regular ball is the Prov 1. I was teeing off early, before sunrise and wanted a yellow ball. Used an NXT and got great results. For other suggestions how about some non conforming balls like Bandit or Polara?
Gentlemen, great information here. Can you take a look at Callaway Supersoft, along with previous versions of the Chrome Soft and Soft X? In the US, you can find Supersoft at $19.99, while the 2016 Chrome Soft and Soft X may be $26.99 or so. Are the newer versions that much better ($10 to $20 more per dozen)?
I’d like to see the new q star tour vs Callaway ERC
For the price of titleist tour soft you can pick up Mizuno rb tour or rb tour x, with a four piece construction and softer cover. Or the Mizuno rb 566 for $22/doz which is two piece construction like the tour soft and you’ll save money.
