"no one thought the air ship section was too long" I am so happy that the Valve team really are as super chill as they make themselves out to be in the few interviews they do
That was always my main complaint with that level. It's not awful, just way too long. It was nice hearing the Devs joking about it and seemed to agree with that sentiment.
I feel like the one improvement to this series would be to bring the speedrunner on with them, so they can explain how they're abusing the bugs, and why it works to the devs.
Most speedrunners would not have any insight into the actual game coding to provide, unless they were employees who worked on coding the game they were speedrunning, or the game's code is open source and the speedrunner had delved into the guts of the application personally and had the experience necessary to understand what they were seeing. The devs can, and do, infer from the inputs and actions of speedrunners what's happening in the code, but the speedrunners themselves are generally only aware of the inputs needed to trigger some sort of bug or exploit.
The run is moving fast enough already for a few devs to talk about it, let alone the runner adding his insight on every move. Lmao you want a clusterfuck of people talking?
@@countrybluegrass That's simply not true. Speedrun tech is well researched, and the best speedrunners of a game often have intimate knowledge of how glitches, bugs and exploits work, or _at least_have a general idea of whats happening.
12:00 Having nearly 5000 hours in garrysmod the trick he did with the Airboat was actually to cause a forced removal of the airboat which every now and then gives you noclip for some reason, especially if you did it during the startup animation. It was an exploit in Garrysmod servers for a long time to give yourself noclip this way even if it was not allowed by the server operators. At the end, he used a barnacle to un-noclip himself because getting tounged by a barnacle probably changed his movement type from MOVETYPE_NOCLIP to something else, likely MOVETYPE_CUSTOM. Upon death the barnacle would probably reset your movetype to MOVETYPE_WALK which is the default movetype for the player entity. He does this in all likelyhood because noclip has a max speed and reverse bhopping is way faster. Man, it's actually kind of cool that for once in my life I can look at a crazy moment in a speedrun and know exactly what the hell just happened.
Yes that's a forced airboat removal like you said. Since you seem to know about it, it would be a shame not to give you more info. In reality noclip is given to the player as soon as he enters any vehicle (I assume this is some countermeasure to stop calculating unnecessary collisions or something). When you exit a vehicle and delete it before the exiting animation is over, the method for handling vehicle exits for the player is never called. Thus you are left with noclip, BUT there is a twist. In reality we don't use it to get noclip, noclip is just a side effect. The airboat left us another valuable gift. What we really make use of throughout the run is the fact that Gordon's havok hitbox has been "turned off" (masked to COLLISION_GROUP_IN_VEHICLE) ever since he got in the airboat, and never got turned back on. Havok hitbox is the hitbox used for vphysics collisions (props, bullets etc) and quake hitbox is the one used for the world collisions - also responsible for fall and explosive damage I believe. That's the reason the player can pass through walls - like first seen at 14:17 - if he jumps towards them while holding a prop: basically because the hitbox for calculating prop collisions is turned off so it passes through. This comfy bug lets us pass through walls while also being able to damage boost, thanks to the game using hitboxes from two different engines for different things. Neat huh?
@@kuzmavolkov if you are talking about the "deleting the airboat" part, we do it in a perfectly legal way without cheating. By exiting the airboat while it is not inside the transition trigger (the entity that handles which entities are going to pass to the next map) and hitting the trigger that changes the level while exiting, the airboat does not exist in the next map so you stay with noclip and other stuff.
@@Ankanogradiel there's a big leap though from using game mechanics, taking advantage of frame collisions with walls and then just outright exploits though.
The devs know how much time these people spent playing the game they spent so much time making…. What else is there to ask other than, “why didn’t one of our main triggers trigger?”
An interesting comment one of the devs brings up is how the speedrunner is finishing areas in seconds that had taken them hours of their lives to complete, yet the collective hours of all half life 2 players must be absolutely gargantuan compared to even years in production. Yet the love and admiration might as well be equal.
they should have waezone or other speedrunners on to explain what's happening. ie. the reason that he can clip through walls using objects is because he utilized the airboat to gain its properties, and mess with his hitboxes/collision. would be interesting to hear the devs react to the actual tech being used, rather than speculate.

I feel like the one improvement to this series would be to bring the speedrunner on with them, so they can explain how they're abusing the bugs, and why it works to the devs.
That's what double fine did. They invited a speedrunner to run Psychonauts with them. Go watch it it's super cool
I like to imagine the devs are taking notes for a patch update
33:21 yes, getting into and out of airboats, literally the only reason he touched it
Ah, the yesclip.
12:00
Having nearly 5000 hours in garrysmod the trick he did with the Airboat was actually to cause a forced removal of the airboat which every now and then gives you noclip for some reason, especially if you did it during the startup animation.
5000 hours to understand just one trick, imagine how long do you need to play again and again to prepare yourself for the whole speedrun
Neat huh?
@@Ankanogradiel that sounds like cheating man. Might aswell just use console codes.
