Can't say I teared up, but like you, it makes me feel good to see younger folks hear, and actually appreciate the music I listened to when I was young. I recently took my great nephew to see Kansas for their 50th anniversary show. He's 13, and I wasn't sure how he would like it, but he said he really enjoyed it, gave it 2 thumbs up, which pleased me to no end.

That tone you are hearing is actually called "brown sound." Created by Eddie, it is definitively Van Halen. You will never confuse this band with any other. As soon as you hear an opening riff, you know. There are plenty of guitarists with a specific style, but it takes a whole other level of ingenuity to create a "sound." The entire band is badass. Dive deep. You won't regret it.

Not bad for a boy who came to America with his family after WWII. He couldn't speak English and his father was a big band era player. They grew up on piano. Crazy thing is, he never learned to read music. Just had a God given gift for music. And great ears

I was fortunate enough to meet Ed on Nov 1st, 2007 at the Verizon Center in Washington D.C. I bought the 5 star VIP package for me and my father and backstage pass with a tour of the stage, soundcheck and front row were included. I only had about 90 secs to talk with him (and he was very humble) but we shook hands and he signed my Ibanez RT650 guitar and told me he hoped to spot me in the crowd later that night. He did, and he posed a few times for my phone camera. Got some amazing pics of him, the band and his ex wife Valerie Bertinelli who was next to me on my left. She was there to support their son Wolfgang who was 16yrs old and playing the bass guitar for the band. Make no mistake, those memories and my guitar are my most prized possessions and probably will be until I pass the guitar down to my son. The impact he made on music will probably never be felt or seen again in this lifetime. He wasn't just a guitar player, he was an innovator. The Mozart of our generation.

Back in the mid 80's, Eddie build his own studio named, 5150 Studio. Reason for this studio was for Eddie wanted more freedom from his label, Warner Brothers. Prior to his studio, Eddie felt stifled on his creative side. Since his untimely death in 2020, his only child, son, Wolfgang Van Halen owns his father's studio. Wolfe recorded his two albums for his band, MammothWVH. Mammoth was his father's band name until he know that another band has the name. Original singer, David Lee Roth suggested both brothers: Eddie and Alex to use their last name as band name. Roth left the band in 1985 for his solo career. Singer here is Sammy Hagar. Sammy already established singer prior joining VH.

Great video Mia! The thing about Eddie is that, sure, today there are some young players that can emulate much of what he did, but if you listen to them side by side, there was just a spirit in his playing that can never be completely mimicked. And then there’s the fact that he wrote all these things from the depths of his soul. It just can’t be replaced. He was the Mozart of Guitar. Merry Christmas and Happy holidays! ❤💚

"Eruption" is the second track from Van Halen's 1978 debut album titled "Van Halen" It is considered one of the greatest guitar solos ever . Another great but under rated guitar player(In my opinion) is Gary Moore , I will have to request him at some point. There are plenty of other great guitar solos out there from other artists , although I must admit I would be struggling to find one as amazing as this!!! Interesting tidbit, Eddie did a favor for Quincy Jones and recorded the guitar pieces for MJ's hit song "Beat it". Eddie was listening to the music and noodling around to get a feel for it to record only to find out they were already recording and took his first set for the record. One of the few times Eddie did a freebie, though at that time he was of the opinion he'd get paid. He found out that sometimes you do favors in Hollywood. ;)

Edward Van Halen and his brother Alex Van Halen were born to Dutch immigrants from the Netherlands... their father Jan Van Halen was a struggling musician who played jazz music... As kids, Eddie and Alex took lessons in music but neither had the patience to learn... Alex started on guitar, Eddie on drums.... but then, they switched w/ Eddie playing guitar and Alex on drums... They formed a school band in the late 60's in Pasadena, California. They would play school events w/ Eddie singing and playing guitar... They would rent a PA from a rich kid named David Lee Roth to do shows, but by 1973, the brothers decided it was cheaper to have Roth be the singer w/ Eddie on guitar... he built his first guitar w/ parts of other guitars - he called it the 'Frankenstein' cos he was too broke to afford a new guitar.
With David Lee Roth on vocals, the band had gone through a few names... but Roth recognized Eddie Van Halen's talent and decided to name the band Van Halen. It seemed like a marquee name and would attract fans who wanted to see Eddie play live, even though he was still a teen and couldn't play the L.A. clubs. In 1974, Michael Anthony (bass) joined Van Halen and added his singing talents to their vocals... Eddie sounded like no other guitarist back then, and he created the 'finger-tapping' technique and revolutionized guitar playing... However, he had trouble playing cover songs because he couldn't make the band sound like the songs... but he sounded like himself. He began to write original songs to play as Van Halen graduated to playing the L.A. clubs by 1976... Gene Simmons (and Paul Stanley) of Kiss saw Van Halen play and wanted to sign them (Van Halen had no idea what a record label or manager was...) and Simmons helped them record their first demos. But no one wanted to sign Van Halen.
David Lee Roth was not the best singer, but he looked great and knew how to put on a show w/ acrobatic moves... He pushed Van Halen forward until they were finally signed in 1977 and recorded their first album... Eddie recorded a guitar 'warm-up' in the studio and they decided to release it as the 'Eruption' intro - fans heard it and freaked... they had never heard anything like it before. Rock music and guitar playing changed forever after Van Halen's first album in 1978... Roth wanted Van Halen to make rock music that u could move and dance to.
Van Halen opened for Black Sabbath in 1978 on tour, and they were the bigger band, stealing the show every night... the first album would sell 10 million copies in the US... By 1983, Van Halen had 5 albums and were the biggest rock band in America, selling out arenas and stadiums.
But after another huge record '1984' sold 10 million copies, a creative rift broke between Eddie and David Lee Roth by 1985... Eddie was writing more tracks on keyboards, and Roth was not happy w/ the musical direction... In 1985, news broke that Van Halen had parted ways w/ Roth.
With David Lee Roth launching a solo career, Van Halen were wondering how they could continue without their dynamic singer... but a chance meeting w/ veteran rock singer Sammy Hagar brought him to sing for Van Halen in 1986... Van Halen released the '5150' album w/ Hagar on vocals and it charted at #1 in the US.
This performance clip was filmed on that 1986 tour at the peak of Eddie Van Halen's skills... Sadly, he succumbed to cancer in 2020 at age 65 (R.I.P.)... Eddie Van Halen had spent his final 2 decades touring w/ Van Halen but released little new music since 1998; his struggles w/ addiction and cancer were well-documented...

In the pantheon of all the great guitarists-and there’s been many-there are three (and I argue four) who CHANGED the guitar from one meaning to something entirely else: Les Paul, Jimi Hendrix, and Edward Van Halen (I would add Chet Atkins) It’s one thing to be a master or better than every other player but it’s entirely different when you change the way the world thinks of the instrument. And I’m not even an EVH fan. But you can see what he did. It’s undeniable.

then i understood why so many guitarist tried to play like him since 1978, a technical revolution, use all the aspects and possibilities of an instruments
it's so fluid, and he looks to be a joyfull guy : that was Edward Ludwig Van Halen

Saw VH at the Oakland Coliseum in 1978 “Day on the Green “. they were the second of 5 bands that day. AC/DC was the opening act , then the Pat Travers Band , Foreigner , Aerosmith I just remember a screaming guitar and David Lee Roth doing a back flip on stage but I came back for more about 7 times

8:03 in this part, he's rocking the volume knob back and forth to the rhythm of the echo effect he has. Extremely difficult to play and do all of that at the same time.

Im 30 yo, Eddie was my favourite since i was 10, so 2/3 of my life 😄 You wouldnt believe but most of the rock and metal fans didnt like him 10 years ago, they would say he is just playing nonsense and so on... Now you cant find these people, they either realised with time that they were wrong or its because he died. Anyway your reaction was my favourite and ive seen them almost all. You dont pause the music and you write your thoughts, i think that is fantastic! Van Halen also have some songs/music videos that you might find worth reacting to, like Hot For Teacher or Right Now. Enjoy!

That solo is from their live without a net release of their shows in New Haven in 1986. You said you would have liked to have been there. I can say I saw that solo 3 nights in a row on that tour. It was definitely epic! Edward will be the best there will ever be. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

EVH is a Legend. And he was a genuinely good person. Have you heard of a band called Pantera? It was a metal band that was also started by 2 brothers, Vinnie Paul on drums and Dimebag Darrell on guitar. Its a rabbit hole you should explore. Sadly in 2004, Dimebag Darrell was shot and killed on stage. At his funeral Eddie put his ICONIC(!!) "Bumble Bee" guitar (similar to the one here but yellow and black) in the casket with Darrell. The guitar deserves to be in a museum but Eddie said "Only an original deserves the original." That's some hardcore respect.

Yes, he mastered every style of music in this solo, at 5:16 of the video that was a classical piece he was strumming, I remember hearing it in a Looney Tunes, Bugs Bunny cartoon. Eddied is Classically trained.

Eddie was an innovator for shure. He never could read sheet music and the two handed taping he did where he plays with both hands on the neck was so innovative they had to write special sheet music for it which he could not read. Tapping had been around for awhile but what he did with it took it too a whole other level.

In case you didn't know... Eddie Van Halen played the guitar solo on 'Beat it' by Michael Jackson 🔥🔥🤘🤘
He was also proficient on piano and keyboards... he played quite a bit of keys on Van Halen records, including their #1 single 'Jump'.

That and he was a Classically trained pianist, and he never learned to read sheet music. His style of playing the guitar caused sheet music to be rewritten with tabulature, and since he couldn't read the sheet music, he didn't know if it was done correctly or not.

Actually he completely redid the entire Beat It song. After hanging up on Jackson 4 times he finally did it with the demands he redo the entire song, they do not put his name in credits & no pay as his biggest fear was backlash from his band & fans if they found out

There was some truth... David Lee Roth was not happy w/ Eddie playing on other artists' records... but Roth was a fan of Quincy Jones (the producer) and M.J.

Watching you focused and really trying to absorb what you’re seeing and hearing made me smile and appreciate you. Well done… thanks for giving Eddie the critical listening he earned.
