His rhythm playing was always what defined the band for me.
Yeah, his rhythm playing was so dynamic with the volume knob alone, and so full of cool little nuances...
I think thats why he chose a short sweet solo on this track because the rhythm parts are so dynamic
✌💛🤘
No doubt. Ed was the king of swing. His Rhythm playing was second to none. His solos were the icing on the cake. Fair Warning being my personal favorite for a top notch example.
No doubt about it
Exactly
The best rhythm guitar player everrrrrrrrrrrrr. As iconic as his lead playing was, it was his rhythm playing that made the Van Halen sound what it was. The intros. The phrasing. The two and three note chords splashed in. Truly a master of the machine called guitar.
Nothing to 'troll' here. ;D
It was steady too, you can tell he was a drummer at one point
100% agree. All the amazing flashy leads and solos, as much as it defined a generation of players, it means nothing if you don't have a great song to play it over.
He did BOTH lead and rythm. No need for a 2nd axe man. That is what earned MY respect.
without a doubt
When I saw Van Halen on Eddie's birthday January 1984 at Jackson Municipal Auditorium, they opened with this song. Eddie's guitar cut through the blackness and thick reefer haze, sending a lightning bolt of chills down my spine that I'll never forget. I was 15 years old.
Imagine, just 149 months earlier you were still in diapers nursing on mommy. Fast forward the clock, and 💥 boom, you're experiencing EVH. 💪🇺🇸🏋️
Bro, I was the same age when I saw them for the 1st time in Columbia SC. Think it was in the fall of 1984. They opened with “Unchained” that night as well. Never forget it. Unbelievable night.
Very cool.
I saw them in 1980 at Hampton Coliseum on their Invasion 1980 Tour after Women and Children was released....I was 16 years old
I think I was there.
The more I listen to this isolated track, the more I realize how much Michael Anthony's bass carried.
Yes, and it's great that VH let it do just that rather than burying the bass with gtr overdubs like most others did.
Dude 1987 Oakland live version only time when they were sinc
Yea
I’m listening but all I can hear is thumping bass
It was that low D that gave this song that boost
@@MontourR C# not D.
It still hurts to hear this and know he’s not with us. Truly the soundtrack of my youth.
Jam his music every chance you get. He stays with us forever through it.
@@mikexxx11I read someone’s comment on how bad he missed EVH.Another person replied to them just push play and he’s here. 😢 There are times I cannot even listen to him. I cannot imagine how WVH copes with losing him.
Thank the lying, truly evil US cigarette companies for the early deaths of millions including Ed.
Huh? I'm guessing your are not so old. All good things have an end. People get old and die. Get a grip wtf
Kids just don’t know how they changed the game they were my Beatles
There will never be another EVH ❤️
Such as there will never be another you, me and all commenting here.
Nor should there be
What a natural ! Gifted guitarist, RIP , Eddie.
So talented and a super nice guy
I don’t know what town you’re from but for the last 4 decades almost every guitar player is trying like hell to sound like him. so really the problem is too many clones and not enough people who were original like him. But there are defintelt lots and lots of EVH’s everywhere
Unbelievable. Just amazing.
Yes, he is and was and always will be!!🥰
It's no wonder everyone called him "King"
@@tommitchell7294 I thought they called Rhoads the King? no wait he is the God
@@Dave_Wight_The_Rock_Oracle Randy was good but he always lurked in the shadow of King Edward
@@tommitchell7294 he was never in Ed's shadow, he was doing stuff beyond Ed with songwriting and playing. Two different players, Randy made in metal, Ed in a pop rock band
Ed was the whole package, blurring the lines of rhythm and lead playing, a tone
connoisseur, tasty and classy use of effects and badass master song writer....and he did it all with a huge smile every night.
RIP you absolute legend.
Amen.
Amen...
Well said.
Absolutely. I love how he knew what effects would work best for whatever the song needed. Never overdone or to the point that it took away from the song and always tightly played.
Rick Feith When do you think this picture was taken? I'm guessing 1978?
It still hurts. Real bad
With you on that one. The world is bleaker after a loss like this.
Yeah I’m sure for all of us it was a shot in the heart the minute we heard . Because of that band and Alex I learned drums .
So much.
I live in L.A. and pass by the hills where the 5150 studio is, often. People have left some nice signs and tributes that are fortunately still up, so far.
I feel you man, I'm in the same place brother. The last time I felt this way was when my father died. A sort of numb feeling interspersed with feelings of shock and dread every time you're reminded of the fact that he's really gone.
Pure insanity. Been listening to him for 40 years and I still can't wrap my head around how good he was.
Right??? Me too. Beyond a guitar god. Eddie and Randy Rhoads just blew my mind when I was a kid
same here, i even named my son Michael Edward :D named after 2 Legends Ozzy and Eddie :D
Nobody can. The man was not of this planet.
@@southsidemichael386 randy will never be out done by anyone
@@johnh9507 I'll agree with that. Between Eddie and Randy, I do like Randy better. But they're both incredible players
What I remember about Eddie is he always had a smile on his face while playing. It translated into the vibe that was his essence.
The pre-chorus riff is insane.
Yes it is, I can't even play it at step-grandad speed! It blows me away every time I hear him play it.

At 1:47 yea it is. Eddie played everything absolutely perfect as far as I know. LOL! I just noticed the fire extinguisher on the drums.
Hearing it isolated helps me a lot. The timing is so weird.
The main riff from Unchained just might be the most kick ass guitar riff of all time! 🎸🤘😁
It’s certainly up there!

@P S What are your most favorite VH songs?
Mean Street.
It would be if Kashmir didn’t exist
Who didn't recognize this instantly and mouthed the the words "hit the ground running" while listening? ....So cool. So very very cool. Eddie was one of a kind and generations will miss him.
I didn’t
I thought it was "hit the crowd, Rocky!". Stallone?
Niners
can you imagine how HUGE this sounded back in the day?
jason7524 Yes it was Huge. I was there and I have the t-shirt to prove it.
Imagine it?! I saw it live !
It still sounds huge to me. So much cooler than all the quantized, stacked, digital modeling amp crap that comes out nowadays in the “rock world”. Modern bands add so many layers of crap to their recordings. Eddie just laid down one track most of the time. He’s a legend, and most of the modern people who later 10 guitar tracks are not legends. Go figure.
When I was 11, I stayed with my aunt and uncle while my folks were on vacation. I didn't want to go that year. We went to the local mall, and I bought WACF and FW, which had just been released. I drove them crazy because all I wanted to do was listen to FW over and over and over again!! Especially the intro to Mean Street and Unchained. Wacf got some heavy rotation as well. My buddies and me always looked forward to a new VH release because you were always treated to some new crazy things he'd come up with on guitar. Cathedral comes to mind a year later in 82. I miss those years walking around the neighborhood, camping out, just hanging out. We always had our Van Halen playing in the background 😊 So yeah it was Huge!!
Yes…I was there❤
Hearing this amazing guitar by itself, you really gotta appreciate DLR for coming up with the vocals to sing over it. Knocked it out of the park.
That's one of the unnoticed and unappreciated things about the band, Dave's ability to interpret and write to Ed's music. No one else could have done this. One of the ways they were perfect for each other.
Ed at his finest... that tone, he is the greatest. Period.
The Atomic Tone!!! Rips you from the inside out yet we somehow survive every time! I love so many guitarists but he's the only one that can communicate with the gods!
His rhythm playing was so good
@Bret Z 🤔
Yup. Fair Warning was pure genius.
Actually, this tone is not bad or good. Tone is subjective and according to the hearing institution, everyone's interpitation of tone is different. Example Black people for the most part are much less sensitive to variations in notes and tone do to the shape of their ears. They have an ear canal that is less evolved that most others. This is why they tend to be very loud and enjoy deeo bass simple music. On the other had, native Americans have a very shallow sound receptors which makes them sensitive, to all most too sensative to tone. This is the reason why native Americans really do not enjoy contemporary music and enjoy more droning types of music.
EVH never overdid it on the guitar. Listening to this isolated track, there are some pretty simple riffs/runs, but they fit perfectly. The master of less is more! RIP🎸❤️
It's songs like these that make Eddie such an influence on me. The man can play for days, yet he knew exactly when to dial back and make his guitar sing.
Agreed! EVH knew what to play, whether a little or a lot, depending on what the song called for. For all his virtuosity on the instrument, he was a musician first, guitarist second.
Never over did it,are you high,he lived to overdue every thing, that’s was what he did
The little syncopations and accents are pure groove.
He was certainly a riff-master/run-master/rhythm-specialist more than the lazy 'shredder' tag that gets applied to him!
Remember this was "just one guy" and years ahead of his and most of others time! Thank you Eddie, thank you for everything, for those of us who saw him , enjoyed him , maybe even met him , lucky us! Rock on brother!
Just the amazing sound. You Can Tell Eddie Van Halen's guitar playing apart from anyone on the planet he was an amazing all-around guitarist lead and rhythm
Brian May stands out, But nobody matches EVH.
Grateful on this Thanksgiving that I was in high school when this came out, and got to enjoy this other-worldly greatness during my lifetime. Ed spoke for the millions of speechless.
,,,yes. I agree,,,,,,,can't imagine my senior year without this music...little dreamer!.😯.jamie,!.turn back the clock,,,remember....😐
Had this track on a 45.
That's old.school. still think Eddie is best of all time.
A true guitar god. Rip
Yes i was also in highschool when this hit..glad i was there for the ride..
My neighbours loved EVH. Well at least I think they did as I never heard them knocking to complain!
Only Dave could write lyrics over this rhythm.
Best innovative guitar genius ever made. RIP Eddie Van Halen. There will never be another you in my lifetime with that skill. Nobody
The guitar smoked a cigarette after that song.
The guitar AND Eddie both did. They were in love with each other.
@@kawasakiwhiptwo5821 And both died prematurely because of it...

OMG! This is a great (and accurate) comment! Nicely done!
Eddie's guitar was a chain smoking SOB! 5150 forever.
How about Dave writing the lyrics and melody to this track. Dave was perfect for Eddie. One break comin up.
"Aw, c'mon Jack. Gimme' a break..."
🇺🇸
Yeah it’s crazy how Dave wrote over this. Fucking brilliant. This is not easy to write over. It’s almost impossible because of how Eddie takes it all over. Mad respect to DLR. Edward will always be the king!
Jack: non-stop talker was dead on.
but, seriously, the dlr days...lightening in a bottle.
i trip that so many think that van hagar was a better van halen.
Supposedly the whole Dave rap during the breakdown was entirely planned out and not completely off the cuff as they made it seem. I read once that there is a demo version of this tune with the same exact same bit about Templeman's suit and getting some leg, only it's Dave speaking Ted Templeman's line as well. I would chew my own arm off just to hear that.
I'll never forget the first time I played the Zero demos for a friend that had never heard anything before the first album. He was so surprised that Dave had his whole style put together with the screeches and all, several years before the first album was even recorded. Everything was well thought out when it came to that band. Nothing was left to chance and yet they brilliantly made it come off as if it were. Not easy to do.
One break-up comin' up.
One of my fav songs, riffs, of them all time!
That photograph though! LOVE IT!
His rhythm phrasing is iconic.
He was a great shredder too but that rhythm and phrasing ability laid the groundwork for all those who followed.
He almost always played what fit the song instead of ridiculous self-indulgence that didn’t fit.
Perfect description of Eddie's playing style! He was definitely the GOAT!
Love the isolated tracks! You hear things that get lost when the others join in. Thanks
Rip Eddie. May the youth learn to Rock again. There is a template.
When I played this my cat rubbed her head on the speaker and started purring. Thank you EVH.

The brown sound.
One of a kind. RIP Eddie we’ll always love you.
It does still hurt. I was flattened when i heard...didn't cry that much in years. R.I.P. Eddie.
There's a new band in heaven with Eddie and Neil P.
I never realized how cool that little walk down into the chorus was
It's really hard to learn without the isolation because of how obscure it is. Same with the timing
This brings a tear to my eye this am, Ed’s mind was on another level, his technique and feel with never be seen again in our lifetime
I wish I could’ve had Eddie Van Halen’s brain in my head for just one day to see what it is that he sees with music. I bet it would be incredible.
Such a brilliant, original, joyful, rockin’, unmistakeable, important rock guitar artist. Part of the fabric of my youth, and forever embedded into so many memories. ❤️
You can have your Dylan, your Lennon & McCartney, your Springsteen, etc. But for me this is it. EVH, the rock n roll God. King of kings.
FN A TOP JIMMY
✌💛🤘
Yeah he’s one of the best. I love him tons. But let’s be careful to not compare apples, oranges, and bananas and pineapples thinking they are in the same comparable ballpark. Was Dylan ever a shredder like EVH no, could Eddie write what Dylan writes, No. Did Van Halen knock the socks off the music scene for decades yes. Did the Beatles do that first, yes. Did(or Can*) EVH still play as much as Springsteen no, is Springsteen a better guitar player, no. These are things to consider. But I just had to be that guy.
Long live EVH long live rock and LIVE music!
van halen could be considered an "American beatles".....their fame, popularity n the influence they had on so many....great albums n a lot of great songs.
@Stryker HP haha yeah those RS lists are always wonky anyway ;D
@@driver4011 definitely, i could see that, I sort of can see them also like America’s Zeppelin in that Zeppelin existed similarly as those members for about a decade in the 70s and then that was it (like the Beatles but Van Halen had more incarnations and life as a band than Beatles and Zep). And then Van Hagar is a different animal or rather the same animal with a new paint job etc. I love them both tho.
Yet I’m aware that’s almost underselling the innovative component of Van Halen’s music and its incalculable affect on the late 70s and all throughout the 80s into the early 90s before disbanding before various reunions. But Eddie is an original specimen. Clapton and Hendrix and Page and other guitar gods are all great but none of those aforementioned gods ever designed their own guitar with their own two hands over decades of experience and experimentation. Granted each of those others have their own contribution to the pantheon of rock n roll and popular music but Eddie in my heart truly will always be the number one electric guitar innovator. The overall global generational affect will always differ from generation to generation especially as those legacy artists continue to sadly pass on into the rockin gates of eternal influence on culture.
Sorry I got all rambly lol. Peace and Love to all of you. Always love chattin’ music :)
Part of my childhood died with his passing. Very sad. RIP Eddie. Thanks for the anthems of a generation.
My sentiments exactly
His sound was untouchable back then. The bite and attack of his setup for the late 70's and early 80's was truly astonishing.
The 16 clowns who thumbs downed this have the soul of a wet cardboard box.
It's not djenty enough. One star!
Hopefully just bad aim.
That’s given them too much credit
What an insult to wet cardboard boxes......
16 butt hurt guitar players.
Eddie's guitar playing was magical.
His skills were Out of this world they dont make them like that anymore, RIP Eddie .
When you get nearly a three-quarters of a million views on an isolated guitar track - you know you're in the land of legend. Rip EVH. 🎸🎹🕯🤘♥
Not just my favorite Van Halen song, my favorite song of all time!!!!
Agreed!!!!
The guitar is sheer brilliance. And to write that melody over Ed’s complex riffs is just as amazing.
Yep, gotta give Dave credit for that despite his HUUUUUGE ego 😁
Every element that made Van Halen great exists in this song.
Eddie’s phenomenal rhythm playing and volcanic solos. Dave’s hyperactive “world’s greatest front man” antics. That thumping rhythm section with Mikey’s Earth shaking bass, and Alex Van Halen’s driving power. And those backing vocals.
This is when Van Halen ruled the fucking world. Once Dave left, the band was still damned good-I saw them in concert for the first time on the OU812 tour with Sammy Hagar, and they were a well oiled machine. But Dave, Ed, Alex and Mike were....special. Rainbow with Ritchie Blackmore and Ronnie James Dio special. Deep Purple Mk II special. The Who circa “Who’s Next” special.
The band with all four original members were the natural descendants of Zeppelin. Everything you could ever want in a hard rock band. Dave was never a truly great vocalist. He didn’t have to be. To see Van Halen live...David Lee Roth commanded the stage like no one else has, before or after. He was a wind up toy. The host of the greatest party, attended by 16,000 of your closest, screaming friends. Michael Anthony was the Jack Daniels swigging wild man, just ripping on that four string, out of control. Alex Van Halen was the pulsating heart, just frantically beating the piss out of his drums, destroying snare heads, pure energy and drumming greatness. Seeing Alex Van Halen behind the kit in concert in those days was like seeing John Bonham.
And then there was Edward Van Halen. The greatest rock and roll guitarist there ever had been, or ever will be. Genius. Mind blowing pyrotechnics. A “devil may care” smile. Pure joy.
And those backing vocals. Oh, God. As great a bassist as Wolf is-and how could he not be, given that his father taught him, and passed his genes to him-he just could never bring to the studio, or a live show, what Michael Anthony did. He and Eddie Van Halen harmonized so beautifully together. Too many people miss that Van Halen’s backing vocals were every bit as important as Ed’s guitar playing. Listen to the backing vocals on Women in Love, or You’re No Good from Van Halen II, or In a Simple Rhyme from Women and Children first. A big part of what made Van Halen so much more sonically interesting than other similar acts of that era...was their backing vocals. Van Halen could melt your face, and as you left the stadium, your ears ringing, you’d be humming the great melody from one of those songs.
I never saw the band with Roth. He left the band when I was only 13. But I saw them numerous times with Sammy. And those memories I will have forever.
2020 was such a terrible year. Two of my heroes died. Eddie Van Halen, the reason I picked up a guitar, and Neil Peart. The greatest drummer in rock history. Van Halen, Rush and Queen are the soundtrack of my life.
Knowing I will never see Van Halen again, that I’ll never hear the brown sound, Eddie wailing through a stack of 5150s....that hurt isn’t going away any time soon. But I got to see the man up close, snd watching and listening to Eddie Van Halen was one of the joys of my life.
RIP, Ed. Thank you for making life so much fun.
What a touching post. I saw them at Donington Monsters of Rock and was too young to appreciate what I was seeing.
DLR sucked. The guy could not sing. Worse, he could not remember what to sing.
He was a connected shekeler. That is why he ended up in this band.
I will say it a million times, and mean it everytime Being a guitarist myself, I know what EVH was to me. Everyone else here knows what he meant to them. You can throw out all the superlatives you want about The Master, but there is never going to be an argument about his mastery of his chosen art. No else had players around the planet going "What the F is that". From his grin to his fingers Eddie was born to bring us joy through his expression of his art, and you can thank whatever god you believe in that he shared his joy with us.
ALWAYS #1
UNPARALLELED.
When the master emerged, from the opening chords of you really got me, every player knew the sonic landscape was changed in a way that was unheard of up to that time. Eruption smashed his foot onto your throat daring you to try to emulate him. No one can.
There was never anyone like him, and there will never be another, and I miss his artistry.
Not reading all that. But unfortunately, Michael’s bass is no where close to earth shattering on the records. Does not bump on my subs hardly at all. Maybe it did live tho
My favorite Van Halen song of all time. Eddie was a magnificent rhythm guitarist.
This is amazing. Such simple lines, but when mixed with the rest of the band it rocked like nothing else.
Ed was such an amazing guitarist, just hearing this isolated track gave me goosebumps, and I’ve listened to this song hundreds of times on the radio and at home. I still can’t believe he’s gone, but we all have this great music to remember him by.
Such a sweet awesome sound. Those chord changes are epic. Perhaps the best rock guitar song ever.
The tone!!!!! Gives me freakin goosebumps.
The way he rushes the build up back into the chorus after the bridge works so well on the track
yes, the finer nuances of this masterpiece
Not sure if there were any punch-ins, but it sounds flawlessly smooth, even in the transitions from rhythm chugging to lead licks and back....including effects. My God...are we listening to one take?
Eddie was the Mozart of Rock and Roll. RIP EVH
No, we’re not listening to one take when you consider the first solo is an overdub. That said, he was brilliant. And he was born one day shy of 200 years after Mozart, fwiw...

Exactly right. The rhythm comes back in while the last note of solo is still clearly sustaining.
But the solo could have been a "one take" track and the rhythm a separate "one take" track.
But this is not what the OP was thinking. So you are right anyway.
@@stricknine8623 Van Halen's solos were usually several takes mixed in. Watch David Lee Roth's interview with Joe Rogan, he explains it. Eddie would play several solos, and then they would mix it all together ! and then Eddie would sit and relearn the mixed solo !

eddie, as great as he was, was always about the song, and what would improve it. he could tap, do amazing harmonics, dive bombs, shred, but it was never meant to be an act by itself (like so many do) it had to fit into the framework of what was being done by everyone else. that's what really made eddie great, his musicianship.

Both of his hands are incredible and together they make the greatest guitarist ever but that rythm, timing and touch in the right hand is just freaking out of this world. He was a machine... Just stunning 👏🏻
Wish music wasnt so watered down like today. Too much perfection, raw is real.screw what suits say what it has to sound to just one little group of people. They are the ones that are imperfect trying to perfect what is already satisfying a true sound from the heart instead of suits thinking they know whats right or wrong. Thats why eddie made his own studio because he even knew that they wanted to take away his sound and take away his very own style. And this is why metal had gotten bigger because other companies taking great bands, not saying at all that they are stealing because they felt it was comfortable to play have an homage too somebody who broke the rules on music. If Eddie never put out this technicality then many bands would not even be around. You really have to give him credibility to how metal was derived from. Not from thievery one bit but being able to express yourself from having somebody taking the reigns and opening a genre for people with the same skill. I just dont think that metal wouldnt be metal if eddie never had his own style and gave it to the world and saying its okay to do this dont let no one tell you differently.
Raw is real for sure brother!
