While most people gravitate toward someone like Benny Goodman where clarinet is concerned, his dad was truly badass on his wind instrument. I was always impressed by this chord at 0:45. It is very beautiful the way he manages to get there, and lasts just a brief second. I was shocked the first time I've heard it. Never seen anything remotely close to that.
There's a percussive element to Eddie's playing. That's because he started out on piano, then went to drums years before he ever picked up a guitar. He's playing the piano on a guitar. That's where that bottom end thump comes from. Incredible depth in that tone.
He had the look, the skills, the soul, the brains and the desire to give the world something very few musicians can. I'm so glad I can to age with Van Halen. End of a generation. Who will take the torch from here?

Exactly that is what separates the greats from the posers! The greats focus primarily on the song and main melodies and perfect rhythm playing. Everything else they play is to spice up the song and give it energy and make it sound bad azz!
AWESOME is absolutely right!!! Thank you for posting this isolated track! As someone who grew up listening to Van Halen, I, like everyone else was always in awe when it came to Eddie’s mastery of the guitar. But after all this time, hearing this isolated track leaves me just as flabbergasted as when I first heard Eruption all those years ago. The man was truly a ‘once in a lifetime phenom’. This track shows it. I feel so fortunate to have lived on this earth when the great EVH lived and performed
The amount of detail and work that went into his playing is incredible! This was a labor of love! No one else in history seemed happier with a guitar in his hands than Eddie!
Not many lead players can play rhythm like Eddie can. IMO that's what separates him from most other guitarists. He can play scorching leads, but also play melodic rhythms that rival his best leads. The guy is a musical genius.
It's amazing how much of the whole song do we get just with Eddie's guitar.... Usually there are silents part relying on other members instruments when isolating one like this. But in this case, add a drum and you are pretty much done. AMAZING !
Im not lying, I can hear a grin in that guitar performance. You can hear his joy and playfulness. God, thanks man for sharing your gift. PS I was 15 in 1984, drummer, and in a band with my buddy when he came to school, somehow, with the brand new tape of the 1984 album.(I actually think he ditched school during the lunch hour to run to the record store! There's no other way to produce it in the middle of the day, at school?) (We kept staring at the cover during choir practice) After we listened a bit, I begged him to loan me the tape, just to hear the rest, then give it right back. I still can't believe he did, and I was such a jerk I kept it forever!! I knew it was so wrong, his brand new tape (and he was the guitarist in the band) I just couldn't stop listening, every song, and he knew it too. That's a great friend! We played tons of gigs, lots of love and little fights like that. Goddamn! (Before I had a double bass set, I learned how to play it with my right hand stick, and right foot, on the kick head. . . Years later I subbed with a band, that song came up. They were in shock when I pulled that outa my ass!) I digress. thanks EVH for sharing your artistry, and light and defining a key part of my life, what a time!!!!!
I've always thought Hot For Teacher sounds like ZZ Top's song Heard It On the X. And I know they had a few ZZ Top tunes in their repertoire back in the Mammoth days.
Funny how this is the part you listen too throughout the whole song with all parts playing. Although the only time I felt something was missing...it was where Alex had perfect timing beating the drums.
I love this. In the first transition from clean to distortion you can hear him click into his distortion channel on his pedal. Now stuff like that gets chopped out without a second thought.
Each and every one of Eddie’s guitar licks and songs on ‘Women and Children First ‘ were the epitome of this once in a lifetime Rock God’s greatness! My favorite Van Halen album!
As much as i miss his playing, i think what i miss the most is the joy on his face when he was playing. Dude had his demons but damn that smile was about as infectious as they come. Rest easy eddie and thanks for sharing what you loved to do with us mortals
@@darthshaggy9970 ...pushed with a variac and then the front end boosted with an MXR EQ pedal... So yeah it actually was a high gain sound for the time.
@@Van020280 The variac was to reduce the voltage so the amp wouldn't be so loud when turned all the way up. Allowed the amp to produce two stages of distortion in series. Still not very much gain.
Actually, there might be an explanation. His mother was an orthodox piano teacher. His father was a big band, clarinet playing groove monster. Between the two, music in the home would always demonstrate foundational structure accompanied with creative imagination. That combination is contagiously fun! Both Eddie and Alex loved music, I believe, as a direct result of who their parents were. Music was the lifeblood of their parents and their household. Having two great examples, aiding in the development of a love for music, for parents... it's not a wonder that both went on to be incredibly accomplished musicians.

@3:20 that bend. man. I love the feel/phrasing and all the nuance in this. So many great guitar players now but Edward's rhythm and feel are just uncopyable. And to even come up with a crazy solo like this. It's nuts, but the phrasing...there's a lot of melody in there. It's not just stuff. That's why it's so memorable.
It's the originality that made Eddie stand out. isolate a lot of other tracks and you'll hear a whole lot less going on in a basic Rock track. It wasn't his finger tapping but his rhythmic skills that really made him shine. And he applied that rhythmic sensibility to his solos.
One time I was late for work, and I was just racing through the streets trying to find a parking spot. It was a snowy slippery day, and I was blasting this song on the way to work. He had the distinct privilege of growing up with an orthodox piano teacher for a mother, and a big band, clarinet playing groove monster for a father. All he needed was a love of music, which we all know, ran thru his heart and soul like a lifeblood.
Theres something so raw and visceral about these isolated guitar tracks, I just love it
The 30 seconds of silence at the beginning of the video sold me on it's authenticity, also the guitar playing as well.
I don't feel tardy.

I am still crying over his passing. There will never be anyone like him -the talent, the joy, the performance, the humility. He had it all rolled up in an impish package that was impossible not to love. I was lucky to have grown up with his music and for that I am forever grateful.
he had such good timing!! that groove, accuracy and mastery of his guitar style will never be matched
The song that got me through puberty and made me feel cheated at the selection of teachers I had. The man will always be a legend.
I dunno, my grade 11 social teacher was pretty cute. Probably isn't anymore
The guitar needed a cigarette afterwards and the amp filed a police report.
Amp was to busy crying to file anything and the guitar filed a rape report...lol
That’s funny!
Not funny
Haha!
How do you think Eddie Van Halen would have felt about sexual assault jokes?
Simply put just flat out BADASS..Iconic song from most of our youths. Although you lived the life of 10 men hopefully enjoyed every minute of it,your riffs an style will go on for many yrs to come...RIP EVH...Thanks for everything...
R.I.P Ed, you were one of my guitar heroes!
And still is!!!🤘
I was always impressed by this chord at 0:45. It is very beautiful the way he manages to get there, and lasts just a brief second. I was shocked the first time I've heard it. Never seen anything remotely close to that.
0:31 sounds like a laser cannon from star wars. Eddie hands down had one of the most searing tones I've ever heard. It's incredible
There's a percussive element to Eddie's playing. That's because he started out on piano, then went to drums years before he ever picked up a guitar. He's playing the piano on a guitar. That's where that bottom end thump comes from. Incredible depth in that tone.
1:13 you can clearly hear the sound when he activates the distorsion switch with his foot. That means that it was mostly recorded in one take.
That would have just been going to his bridge pickup and diming the guitar volume.
Hearing the bare song with only Eddie's guitar shows how talented of a musician and true guitar master he was anytime he made music. Rock in Peace EVH
Eddie’s timing and swing is unmatched!!!
He had the look, the skills, the soul, the brains and the desire to give the world something very few musicians can. I'm so glad I can to age with Van Halen. End of a generation. Who will take the torch from here?

Was blessed to have eddies music since I was 13. Hard to believe that is genius is no longer with us. How can so much talent and greatness just disappear into the ether forever? Rip evh. You will always be loved and missed by so many people.
Absolutely amazing! First time to hear it separately after decades of listening to this and heard so many nuances I never realized were there. My number one guitar hero since 1978 and forever.
How did David put lyrics to this? amazing..
Yeah man, how the fuck can you even step into the vocal booth after hearing that guitar 😂 I would just walk home 🤣
A genius in his own right!
I think he is the best of all-time. Bombastic, balls-to-the-wall, aggressive and fun at the same time. It's also kinda sneaky--you don't realize how many intricate the parts are sometimes.
FIRST TRACK RECORDED. Done all in ONE TAKE.... NO punches..... simply unreal! Eddie Van Halen is beyond simply talented. He is not of this earth. Amazing example of greatness. Thanks for sharing this for the world to see what truly gifted talent is all about!
Where do you get this bs?! This is a composite edit of many, many takes, different tones, etc.
@@artysanmobile I think it’s just about mythologising the man, stories are better than truth. Anyone with a basic ear for mixing knows that editing/multiple takes are here. Doesn’t stop it being awesome!
There's a punch at 2:02, but that doesn't make the playing any less impressive. The guy was obviously a genius.
@@mattwinegar527 couldn’t agree more with you, he was fantastic. I don’t think editing on guitar takes reduces the impact of how incredible he was
He will always remain one of the best guitar players of all time.

brilliant, eddie was one of a kind, nobody like him... aside from his brilliant chops and innovations, eddie always put the music first, he had a bag of tricks nobody had ever heard before, but he didn't just stand up there and noodle for an hour, he played in a band, and made all his tricks musical, part of the music, part of the song... not the other way around...
eddie wasn't your typical guitar god showing you how he could tap, pinch harmonics, dive bomb, and shred, it wasn't a guitar clinic for eddie, he wasn't doing tricks for sake of doing tricks. eddie was all about van halen, the band, the music, the song... and his body of work speaks for itself... rip eddie. you will be missed, but your music will live forever.
Isn't that the baddest ass picture of what a guitar "god" should look like?!!! Hail King Eddie!!!
One thing missing, a cigarette 🚬 burning 😂
The amount of detail and work that went into his playing is incredible! This was a labor of love!
No one else in history seemed happier with a guitar in his hands than Eddie!
He was magic on the guitar. There will never be another Eddie Van Halen.
Man, it just sounds like he's havin' a blast.
He was ,that’s why he was always smiling
When I hear isolated tracks from other players, they sound weak compared to Eddie. He has such a strong command of the guitar. F ing awesome.

PS
I was 15 in 1984, drummer, and in a band with my buddy when he came to school, somehow, with the brand new tape of the 1984 album.(I actually think he ditched school during the lunch hour to run to the record store! There's no other way to produce it in the middle of the day, at school?) (We kept staring at the cover during choir practice)
After we listened a bit, I begged him to loan me the tape, just to hear the rest, then give it right back.
They were in shock when I pulled that outa my ass!)
I digress.
thanks EVH for sharing your artistry, and light and defining a key part of my life, what a time!!!!!
As always, awesome, awesome AND AWESOME!!!.. and I've listened to this track 100,000,000 times..RIP EVH.🙏
This sounds like Eddie was writing a ZZ Top song! ♥️♥️
I've always thought Hot For Teacher sounds like ZZ Top's song Heard It On the X.
And I know they had a few ZZ Top tunes in their repertoire back in the Mammoth days.
Same basic riff.
He said it was inspired by La Grange. VH used to play La Grange all the time back in the day
@ Can you share the interview that he actually said that?🤔
@ , or maybe I am right on point. 🤔
Funny how this is the part you listen too throughout the whole song with all parts playing. Although the only time I felt something was missing...it was where Alex had perfect timing beating the drums.
I love these isolated tracks!
This LEGEND will continue to inspire me long after his passing. ROCK ON IN PEACE! Miss you King Edward. :)
Perfect example of someone mastering their craft.
Greatest riff OF ALL TIME . RIP Edward Van Halen
Might be the closest experience to hearing Eddie play and record guitar for that album. Great stuff! Keep 'em coming!
Just wow! Not many who can do such a soulfull tight awesome guitarwork. His rythm playing is equally to his solo playing.
My god, how great is this? One of the best songs and solos of all time.
I love this. In the first transition from clean to distortion you can hear him click into his distortion channel on his pedal. Now stuff like that gets chopped out without a second thought.
I find myself playing this daily. To me, it is at least equal to the actual song. It is just what I need in the year of covid. RIP Edward.
Holy hell! I’ve been playing guitar for over thirty years I’ve heard this song a million times but now I see the light🤘🏻awesome isolation.
Each and every one of Eddie’s guitar licks and songs on ‘Women and Children First ‘ were the epitome of this once in a lifetime Rock God’s greatness! My favorite Van Halen album!
Flyers Fan this song was in 1984 album...
@@Boatdude100 yes, Sal. The entire ‘1984’ is awesome too!
I grew up playing 1984 over and over and over.
As much as i miss his playing, i think what i miss the most is the joy on his face when he was playing. Dude had his demons but damn that smile was about as infectious as they come. Rest easy eddie and thanks for sharing what you loved to do with us mortals
I was expecting way more gain than that... dude Rules!
In the beginnings EvH wasn't about gain at all.
the first van halen tone its just a marshall plexi, thats the original brown sound, its not a high gain amp after all
@@narvul Sure he was. There was just a different (lessened) achievable level of it back then.
Eddie will be remembered for a long time by many guitar players.

Brings me to tears...
amazing stuff !. there will never be another inventor of amazing guitar and stage performance like EVH. period. not in my lifetime for sure
I think EVH was living a few speeds ahead of us mere mortals, like he was part hummingbird or something. No other way to explain his playing.
Kinda remember an interview of ed saying in his younger yrs he would do coke so he could stay up for days playing guitar, it shows.
@@markrogers7304 99% of rock acts were on coke in those days...
Same goes for Steve Ray Vaughn and his skills
Actually, there might be an explanation. His mother was an orthodox piano teacher. His father was a big band, clarinet playing groove monster. Between the two, music in the home would always demonstrate foundational structure accompanied with creative imagination. That combination is contagiously fun! Both Eddie and Alex loved music, I believe, as a direct result of who their parents were. Music was the lifeblood of their parents and their household. Having two great examples, aiding in the development of a love for music, for parents... it's not a wonder that both went on to be incredibly accomplished musicians.
part hummingbird! hilarious!
My God, this is the essence of what I've loved for 35 yrs now. Rest in peace. x
What a riff.. A great master... Like Blackmore, Hendrix, Rory Gallagher and Mark Knopfler
Ed, thank you for everything, my man..this " batch of tunes" as you used to say..will NEVER be forgotten!! Love you Edward!
I love the slippery notes that flirt with time. Sign of a master musician just like an artist who creates tension and release dont forget about dynamics also grasshopper
Fantastic. Also made me realize what a powerhouse bass player Michael Anthony is. I can totally feel the difference.
Its very hard to know that Eddie Is gone and not here in this world in person but his legacy will live forever
How'd we lose him before Keith Richards 😁
it's so great to hear his fingers and his pick just going to work.
