"Doesn't say anything new" "Tonally all over the place" This is what happens when you focus on the wrong things. The acting was believable in the universe that was created, the plot was sensible, the characters had depth and a reason to root for each one of them- even the villains. It's a missing-person story where the lead can't speak in a world that heavily relies on vocal communication, so he has to find creative ways to advance his investigation. It's never a bad thing when supporting characters "upstage" the lead. Hell or High Water, No Country for Old Men, Inglorious Basterds, etc. There are many movies where the lead is not the best performance, because that's not important, the complete performance of the cast is what is important. Basically, critics don't actually know what makes a film good anymore, and just pander to popularity.
The show is slow at the beginning , but it get better at the end. This show isn't about the fighting, not the parlor prostitution to sell yourself for money to make a living, but the hidden message this movie want to convey that got my attention. It's about pedophile and domestic violence. If you watch the movie with an open mind, those people who killed their wife and beat their friend are worst than the pedophile. Like the Sergeant say, "I see men walked in the sex parlor tense and walk out happy. People have urges and it's better to be happy than to killed or physically abuse your loved one. 🐈
3:21 "The protagonist is upstaged by the supporting cast" I hate this criticism. Sometimes the main character is just an avatar for you to inhabit. Its the motif that Alice in Wonderland uses, and no one gives Lewis Carroll shit.
Beetlejuice didn’t have a “whole lot to say” but people still loved that old movie, and they still love it. There are millions of movies that didn’t have a whole lot to say, but are still cult classics, because people love them. Since when did a movie have to say something.
There are tons of themes to Beetlejuice, the majors being "death and grief," "family," and "growing up/ coming of age." Now, a movie doesn't need to be complicated to HAVE these themes, but people appreciate a work when it can clearly express these ideas in unique and clever ways. Where the film "Moon" has many themes of "breaking cycles," "sacrifice," "free will," and "humanity," so does something like "Wall-E." Two very different films for very different audiences. And yet they both tell these similar ideas through their different stories. Where I think "Mute" fails is in its scattered nature. There are a PLETHORA of themes, but you're never really given a chance to complete any of them. It's a very wide, but severely too shallow pond. Not enough to really sink into and swim around, but on the surface, it has a lot of potential!
No one was criticising the movie for not having anything to say my man. It’s all just riffing on the title. The difference between Beetlejuice and Mute is that Beetlejuice is a blast, and Mute just isn’t.
Rotten Tomatoes' score shows the percentage of critics who gave it a positive review, NOT the average rating the critics gave. The average rating is right below the %.
I don't think you're good at math bud. First a 3.9 out of ten is a shitty score. Secondly out of 63 reviewers if only 13 percent gave it a positive review then that's only 8 fucking people. Which is absolute trash. You're not really making a point here.
I really liked this film. The world building was fantastic. The protagonist was likable as was Paul Rudd. It was also nice to see how much character development the antagonist got rather than him being two dimensional
For a start it clearly states in the film that he’s old fashioned! I absolutely LOVED this, if you don’t like it it’s because you couldn’t understand it! Alexander Skarsgard as Leo was so well acted as u really connected with him and yessss Paul Rudd as a baddie! This film really showed Rudd is better than rom cons! The ending was clever, he used British actors who played British men, the plot was well written....
Aye. The show is slow at the beginning , but it get better at the end. i watched it only because of robert sheehan, and honestly he and all the actors did an amazing job, the whole world seemed really really interesting as well but the plot just wasn’t there, most of the time i just sat there wondering what exactly the plot is and how it is supposed to affect me in any way i did love the whole world tho, and especially the parts where they actually put in german actors and had german things appear or be said, not many movies do that although they’re based in berlin for example
I really liked it Mute, but personally it probably only because I look for weird/different movies like this and once I heard it was a non direct sequel to moon i had to see it. Paul Rudd I found great as the "bad guy", such a Charismatic but dark character.
critics: im getting paid to review this movie but Im to lazy to think of my own 'looks at the critics responses' critic: hmmm lets just take exactly what the others have said and say the exact same but with some minor tweaks here and there
I must admit it wasn't the most amazing movie ever but I actually really enjoyed it. It's almost like a guilty pleasure but I really enjoyed the universe it's set in and the characters
I really liked this film, it has the charm that Jones is known for. I enjoyed seeing a neo-noir that didn’t involve the archetypal hard-boiled detective who gets the girl by saving her. I like how it subverts expectations, having it be set in a cyberpunk world, but having it not focus on the bigger picture of the system oppressing the citizens, but it being an interpersonal story with a small cast (like Moon before it).
i actually happened on mute by coincidence. I never heard of it before watching it and didnt know it was connected to moon or directed by jones until i saw the court room scene and checked to see who directed mute after the movie. It was entertaining and since i had no expectation going into it i was surprised. I do have to say the fact that i saw Sam rockwells face does make me bias on whether or not i liked the movie. I just instantly love any movie he's in. Even if its a throw away easter egg.
To be honest I only watched the movie because Robert Sheehan was in it. It had a nice thought to it, but it just wasn't constructed that well. I stopped watching halfway through, but the acting was nice. Ahh.

I mean, I always had lower standards for movies than most, but I genuienly thought Mute was a really well done film. I personally find its best to ignore critics, it's weird how they form their opinions.
it was my favorite movie of the year, it is a great film. It has meaning construction in the vain of the Wachowskis/Kubrick and tons of layering and thematic detail.
I watched this in bed and I *tried* to find it intriguing and didn't even watch it because of the director (didn't find out till later) but man was it very disjointed. Too many plots shortened to fill in the spaces of these characters of why they connected and I didn't feel like the love story part was all that great. It's like how Coco Chanel and one of her famous phrases "before you leave the house, a lady should always remove one accessory." As if to say "less is more". If it was *just about* some future galactic mute trying to fight gangsters okay fine or if it was *just about* a boy getting in a boating accident and made it like a family drama then okay fine. But a coming of age story that fails miserably at transcending to a love story with this grown ass man and his chick with blue hair to a underdog vigilante action packed thriller movie who has to find justice for the chick we're supposed to believe is the love of his life bc she sleeps with him and takes his picture with an old school camcorder thingyamajig is just way too much to digest. It felt like watching the visual representation of a pitch meeting where the guy (cause its a usually a guy) and he's like so yeah I've been thinking blah, blah, we can do a this or OOH how bout we try a this and then if all else fails we can do a waste budget action film and the exec goes: NO. You're fucking brilliant. Let's do ALL OF THEM. At the same time. In the same movie. Go for it! 😂😂I did like seeing Paul Rudd kinda play a dick for once, but other than that it almost left me lost in the sauce. Too many ingredients.
I loved this movie. It’s up there with some great movies like Drive, Nightcrawler, Taxi Driver, Blade Runner 2049. A mystery thriller, with a protagonist with a physical disability that can amplify the actors actions, set in a cyberpunk setting? With Paul Rudd? I cannot believe this movie doesn’t get more recognition. I love Mute. Honestly wish I found it sooner.
I really loved it! In about 5 or 6 parts. The rest I felt uncomfortable, bored, incredulous, angry... or just... MEH. Overall it was a disconnected mess overall; some good ideas (and interesting characters!) but far too many bad elements took away from that, distracted, heck even the "30 years later" credits thing was a warning of what to come I guess? It didn't know what it's... voice... was -- unlike some very immersive low budget scifi stuff I have really enjoyed on Netflix (I think almost none of them were "NetFlix Originals" though... so the "bargain bin" accusation being thrown around might be valid...
2:43 I legit lauged out loud. FL Studio is open in the background, I heard my voice (I'm new to it, idk how to turn it off) and consequently freaked out at someone laughing at me.
If you're critic but always use word puns to showcase your voice, you're not a critic. You're a shower, not a critic. A true critic would not only gives his opinion, but ask even more questions and reconsider his vision of the movie. If you criticize without criticizing you own subjectivity, you're not a critic. You're a shower.
All I want to say is that Mute is objectively a much better film than what most people are saying. For comparison, look up the reviews of Hold the Dark. Some people didn't like it (me), some did. That's the fine line you want to be in as a filmmaker. if everyone praises you, good. But it's really a shame, and not fair, when people are bashing without any nuances.
When you do a future movie with a lead who doesn't have any future tech. People are like What the hell? I just figured the main character was a Amish mennonite. But wondered Why he lived in the city and didn't build a cabin in the woods.... Maybe he did build that Cabin in the woods they used in that richual sacrifice movie.
I liked it. For anyone that liked that season of True Blood where Eric was a lost puppy this is the movie for you. It wasn't great. It had its moments of cringe but it was a solid movie. I wasn't disappointed and I felt okay about how it ended. Netflix has worse I would watch a sequel just to focus on any character or aspect of this world.
i find the movie nice, seeing Germany on the " Big Screen" was refreshing and the plot was ok, i wasnt bored but the movie had alot of subplots which werent fleshed out. But that i only realized after the reviews
As a Canadian 2:10 had me laughing so hard at 6am that I'm pretty sure I woke my neighbours up. Our prime minister is uhhh.....he's uhhhh.....trying his best I guess🤦♂️🤷♂️
Came to this not knowing anything about it, except that Robert Sheehan was in a supporting role (I'm trying to make my way through his filmography). Gotta say though, I really liked it. One thing I am surprised about is how uncomfortable I was seeing Paul Rudd as a villain, albeit one who has layers, not just a mustache-twirler type. And I mean that to say, he nailed it.
I do like this movie but it just feels a bit off. I think it's because I didn't believe them loving each other. They tried but I didn't feel any chemistry between them. The two guys had more chemistry. Robert Sheeran was completely AMAZING though! I didn't even realize it was him until after I saw it in a RUclips comment and I went back and looked. I do like this film but it doesn't need to be hated. A few parts of the key didn't click but mostly it worked.
The only problem with this movie is the title "MUTE" ... I don´t get these types of titles which feel like the creators are shooting themselves on the foot. The movie was really good. Not brilliant but extremely good...almost excellent in fact. The performances are great.
This movie is one of the most bizarre I've seen. So many things going for it - not least Rudd & Theroux who act their asses off playing a completely amoral sociopath and creepy child predator respectively. The sets are beautifully crafted and immersive. The score - especially towards the end. Unfortunately Alexander Sarsgaard really struggles to sell what is - admittedly - a very challenging role. Maybe Jones needed to work on the script a bit more. It's a failure. But a glorious one.
i watched the movie... i was confused the whole time... towards the end was so painful.. thought little girl was gonnna get... by the pedodoctor and good man mute guy was gonna die and it was so painful to watch.... what is the point of the movie.. what is it about?
Why do I get the feeling a whole lot of these "professional" critics watched this movie while they texted with their friends or scrolled through tiktok. Looking up only briefly every few minutes or so to say how confused they were or how boring they thought it was or how they just didn't get it? This movie g0d-dam n art.
OK so for the past couple of years I’ve been thinking of a movie but I could never think of the title and so I’m really glad that I came across this RUclips channel and binging his movie reviews because I would ask my siblings if they remember this movie and they would say they don’t know and so I would feel crazy and then I come across this video and he mentions Source Code and he says it has to do with time travel and Jake and trains and I’m like “oh I that sounds familiar” and so I looked it up and it’s the movie I’ve been thinking of all these years. Thank you.
My opinion: the are 2 main reasons CRITICS HATE ON IT 1) They are looking every dystopian film to have the Blde Runner blueprint and since Mute doesn't they shit on it. Unfair. 2) It's a Netflix production, so when they find a "weak" film, they purporsely attack it with a vengeance so they can "expose" Netflix as a bad producer of content. This happens because film critics have an overarching agenda of attacking Netflix to avoid it eventually dominating classic movie studios, since once streaming becomes "legit" production houses of "smaller" films would shut down and theaters would be reduced to only showcasing blockbusters and even then they would start losing viewership.
ive been trying to find cyberpunk type movies in anticipation for the game coming out. came across this movie and have mixed feelings but definitely enjoyed it. it took chances and was worth the watch imho. id give it nothing over a 65 but its not as bad as these reviewers gave it
@@daveblueballz6659 I enjoyed it. only ever had 1 really bad bug at launch that had a known fix. excited to pick it back up when the new expansion comes out
I’ve never seen this movie but I’ve always felt that wether or not you enjoy a movie or hate it, it’s completely up to you because we all look at things differently so what some people can feel is the greatest movie ever other’s can be like that sucked it was boring or whatever. So you really have to see it for your self before you can really judge if for you it’s good or not, cause in the end your opinion is the only one that matters.
Why would anyone hate mute? Everyone is wearing a mask....soooo.....I mean, I’m the rebel of DSA. I only wear my face covering when I’m working, other than that. I like my freedom of CHOICE. So, why are people hating this movie? It’s what they wanted.
Well pointed out...netflix, mute, moon, voice, etc thusly the movie never gets credited for finding its way, if not its voice through the mess it's created in the future. :). The fact is, the actors took it a bit as a trampoline for their careers and went on attaching personas too strong for this movie flavor, ripping apart its vanishing suggestive powers, so it becomes paul-rudd-story-no.-1, mute-story-2, theroux-story-no.-3, all-the-abracadabra-story-no.-4. Evidently, everybody seems to want, nay need, to escape its grim future.
Directing isn't writing, you can direct a "pulp fiction" and then direct "mute", it just means the camera work is on the same level. Just because you direct the movie doesn't mean the script or the story gets changed.
I really enjoyed watching MUTE. The juxtapose of Amish character in futuristic dystopia with action / romance / dark themes. I don't get why people give it so much shit.
i honestly watched it because some comments on YT said it was cool. im not sure if i dreamt watching it or if i actually sat down for 2 hrs and watched it
I thought mute was fantastic. I found out it was directed by Bowies son, saw he directed Moon. I loved moon so I had to check this out only to find out it's a semi sequel to moon. So now I gotta check out the third (that's a graphic novel apparently)
I never trust critic reviews. You never know if they are getting paid for good reviews or they leave bad reviews because they didn't get paid. I look at the Audience reviews from time to time. But again I haven't gone to the theaters for the movies in a very long time mostly for the outrages prices in my area for tickets and food. I usually wait till they come out on DVD, Netflix's, or other rentals.
This movie was fucking rad, dude. Paul Rudd was amazing and it contrasts his role as The Marvel Dad. Skaarsgard rocked that whole film with 3 words and it was so much more resounding than Straw Dogs. There's a few mcguffins that are only possible with a futuristic setting but the point was PEOPLE don't change. I loved Moon and it's setting was used in the same way. How are you bitching about what a movie called MUTE had to say? It was simple and no words were really necessary. People talk but it's all bullshit. the sweet, funny doctor is a fucking pedophile. The anti-hero vet that's just trying to skirt the lines of moral ambiguity just to get him and his daughter home turns out to be the villain after it all. And the Mute was on a Taxi Driver-esque revenge mission for his love interest just to find that he cant change a thing. This movie had plenty to say and words were unnecessary, it was in mannerisms and human expression. That transcends time and technology.
The movie was boring. It basically took the amazing visuals of Blade Runner 2049 and then combined them with a bunch of plot points that went nowhere and characters no one cared about. The only redeeming factors were the acting (especially Paul Rudd), the aforementioned visuals, and that cameo of Sam Rockwell from Moon (a WAY better movie to watch btw).
the basic point is that a poor rotten tomatoes rating does mean a crappy movie. Their metric of rating a movie and what a individuals metric would be are completely different. I mean, look at suicide squad.
I enjoyed the film, tbh. Rudd as a sociopath is glorious. Comedy actors always make the best psychos. Also, Sheehan is joyfully weird.

Good point.
You're 100% right about that!
netflix its making quantity over quality... and its starting to damage thier image...
thepoppunx I’m so sorry, “their”
thepoppunx sorry again but ummmm, “off”
Netflix is already a meme. Lol
They are pumping more movies because even if 70% is crap, 30% are great.

Bugs Bunny that’s 39% tho
I didn't hate it! Really great performances. Is it a great film? no! It's definitely worth checking out if you are a big Duncan Jones fan!
One Minute Critic I don't think I'm a Duncan Jones. . .
I wish I was a bigger version of Duncan Jones.
My best movies would be "Ganymede" and "Documentation File".
I'm a big Duncan Jones! So I might enjoy it
I think I'm a small Duncan Jones so I can't watch it
I'm only 4'11". Is Duncan Jones shorter than that?

maybe the movie just didn’t speak to them
dude i literally just watched this, came up dry for analyses, and then this comes out minutes later... were synced dude
was waiting for you to finish it
I thought Mute was really good I don’t understand what happened
I agree. I feel weird now for liking something a lot of people apparently hated.
Same. I've recommended it to all of my friends. Adored it :-/ I lose faith in critics every day.
I really liked it
I consider it one of the best movies on netflix. Had a great time watching it.
I’m glad you enjoyed it, but it was riddled with plot holes, had a major tonal imbalance, and was very convoluted
I really liked it Mute, but personally it probably only because I look for weird/different movies like this and once I heard it was a non direct sequel to moon i had to see it. Paul Rudd I found great as the "bad guy", such a Charismatic but dark character.

It wasn't that good...
I watched it last monday, forgot what the plot was about and who Maksim or Cactus were after watching the other half later
I must admit it wasn't the most amazing movie ever but I actually really enjoyed it. It's almost like a guilty pleasure but I really enjoyed the universe it's set in and the characters

I love Source Code, still gotta see Moon. Source Code is so great.
Stephen Jacewicz ummm did u see moon yet ;-;
2 years later: you seen Moon yet? If you haven't, you gotta do it, man.
To be honest I only watched the movie because Robert Sheehan was in it. It had a nice thought to it, but it just wasn't constructed that well. I stopped watching halfway through, but the acting was nice. Ahh.
LMAO that makes three of us in the "here for Robert Sheehan" crowd.
Cactus_Wolfy I can agree
What the heck I actually liked the movie a good amount
I thought you were supposed to watch this movie in mute.

A mystery thriller, with a protagonist with a physical disability that can amplify the actors actions, set in a cyberpunk setting? With Paul Rudd? I cannot believe this movie doesn’t get more recognition. I love Mute. Honestly wish I found it sooner.
I watched the film today and really enjoy it. The protagonist is mute make me focus more on his action and expression, and they are well acted.
It was slow going at times but still I thought it was good.
Love your videos. Funny yet informative. Keep it up!
It was kinda all over the place. But I was stuck to the screen for the last hour or more so I’d rate it decent
Or will to mention any strengths a movie has. And it's not only style (for the case of Mute), trust me.
Thanks for introducing Moon! I'm gonna go check it out!
Lol😂 I was also confused, he was also a bar tender at a very bumping lounge/bar lol it doesn't really fit ...
@@michz9304 How do you take drink orders in a loud club if you can't say " What was that? "
Please. Please. Please do more videos like these!!!
2:32 the reason why he uses a notebook and a pencil is because hes amish.....
Watched source code earlier. Loved it, it remind me of that other movie where the girl kept dying trying to find her killer.
Lol at the Canadian Priminister showing up.
i find the movie nice, seeing Germany on the " Big Screen" was refreshing and the plot was ok, i wasnt bored but the movie had alot of subplots which werent fleshed out. But that i only realized after the reviews
As a Canadian 2:10 had me laughing so hard at 6am that I'm pretty sure I woke my neighbours up. Our prime minister is uhhh.....he's uhhhh.....trying his best I guess🤦♂️🤷♂️
The Irishman - Another nail in the coffin for Netflix as a destination for quality original films....
Source Code was an awesome film! Also if you are a fan of indie films I'd love to hear your thoughts on The Way, Way Back. I loved that movie
Why can't people just call him Duncan Jones rather who was his father?
But a glorious one.
your all wrong. mute was fire. like seriously paul rudd death was enough to lock that movie in for me.
Gary C. Stith shit thx for spoiling it
I enjoyed mute, however it is a one time watcher, whereas moon I can watch multiple times . it is the same universe or time period.
this is legit one of the best RUclips channels ever
I didn't care for Source Code, but I do want to see Moon someday.
Nice points about making it normal to critique to critics and that a paid critic should have something that isn't simply petty to state. Great video
i watched the movie... i was confused the whole time... towards the end was so painful.. thought little girl was gonnna get... by the pedodoctor and good man mute guy was gonna die and it was so painful to watch.... what is the point of the movie.. what is it about?
Thank you.
My opinion: the are 2 main reasons CRITICS HATE ON IT
1) They are looking every dystopian film to have the Blde Runner blueprint and since Mute doesn't they shit on it. Unfair.
2) It's a Netflix production, so when they find a "weak" film, they purporsely attack it with a vengeance so they can "expose" Netflix as a bad producer of content.
This happens because film critics have an overarching agenda of attacking Netflix to avoid it eventually dominating classic movie studios, since once streaming becomes "legit" production houses of "smaller" films would shut down and theaters would be reduced to only showcasing blockbusters and even then they would start losing viewership.
ive been trying to find cyberpunk type movies in anticipation for the game coming out. came across this movie and have mixed feelings but definitely enjoyed it. it took chances and was worth the watch imho. id give it nothing over a 65 but its not as bad as these reviewers gave it
2 years later how do you feel about the game? one of my favorites of all time tbh
@@daveblueballz6659 I enjoyed it. only ever had 1 really bad bug at launch that had a known fix. excited to pick it back up when the new expansion comes out
Click bait tittle, this was just reading critics reviews not explaining why they didn't like it. Lame dude
Cactus is by far one of the best Characters of all time.
agreed! I would love a movie about him (spoiler) before he dies.... or dose he!?
Freedom of choice to... spread disease when the alternative is barely an inconvenience? This kind of thought process is why corona is booming
Y u so mad bro? Can't handle other people's opinions?
I gave it 6/10 only because of Rudd and Theroux's great chemistry and comedic scenes.
Loolll, I didnt expect the High School Musical Sharpay's fabulousness' reference😂
wait wait wait wait that's THE David Sims, of the two friends.
Another phenomenal video from my dude!!!!
I don't get why people give it so much shit.
i honestly watched it because some comments on YT said it was cool.
im not sure if i dreamt watching it or if i actually sat down for 2 hrs and watched it
Isnt it 2 years old? It was pretty good, lmao I liked it enough to name my dog after the main character
Not gunna say it was some masterpiece film, but damn my boy had his ramona flowers :,( i feel his pain
I thought mute was fantastic. I found out it was directed by Bowies son, saw he directed Moon. I loved moon so I had to check this out only to find out it's a semi sequel to moon. So now I gotta check out the third (that's a graphic novel apparently)
The funniest thing about this is that the movie is called Mute. But people keep saying that the movie don't have sounds \("-)/
I thought it was because he lacked in fookin lasah sights, something in his canister or a big hammer
How does Let Me Explain not have millions of subscribers instead of 10K
That transcends time and technology.
well said Boots, nailed it!
I think you missed answering the "why" part.
Sequel to moon? How? Ok it plays in the same time line but otherwise?
the basic point is that a poor rotten tomatoes rating does mean a crappy movie. Their metric of rating a movie and what a individuals metric would be are completely different. I mean, look at suicide squad.
1:17 when the country roads don’t take you home
It felt incredibly messy.
is it bad i actually liked the movie? sure the stories are a whole mess but the characters are pretty good in a weird way - especially Luba
Wait. The Alamo defender or the singer?
Can someone please tell me why he chugs water????
Read the title: "why music hates mutes"
