- On September 5th, 2009, Penn Rail Videos made a trek into Carbon County, PA, to capture steam locomotion in the Lehigh Gorge State Park. We were far from dissappointed, as Reading & Northern's premier operating steam locomotive #425, is the motive power for this Labor Day Weekend extravaganza onboard the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway in Jim Thorpe, PA. We'll watch the train storm out of Jim Thorpe, then take a ride behind the big blue locomotive as she storms her way into the park. We'll see and pass by many famous locations along the railroad, such as Nesquehoning Junction, Glen Onoko, Oxbow Curve, and we'll conclude our journey at Old Penn Haven. If you like big steam running through beautiful scenery, this is the video for you!
By the way, she is wearing a LEHIGH & NEW ENGLAND 3-chime whistle, not something you hear very often.
Am I the only one who has fond memories on this video?
Boy does that L&NE whistle sound great! That combined with 425 pulling that size of a train unassisted makes it a truly awesome run. Great video!
At about 2:50 you can see both of the aux tenders. has the old one really faded that much or was the new one painted a darker color?
She wore the Reading whistle for the OCS Trip over the 4th of July. They're just changing it up a bit this year I suppose; I like it for one!
Brilliant video, great sound, that whistle echoing round the hills was pure magic.
I love that 425. I was never a fan of American locos before I saw this. But I still prefer the Baldwin 3-chime. I just think it suits it more.
Once again another fantastic video Adam! I love that whistle!
Glenn.
Very Nice Adam! That L&NE whistle is such a different sound for 425. The loud stack talk and deep whistle remind me of Frisco 1522! Great Video as usual!
It looks similar to the Blue Comet 4-6-2 to me!
Yeah it does
First time I've ever seen 425 with a steamboat whistle. Nice.
Awesome shots! Looks like 425 has gotten a new paint job since I saw her in my BM&R videos
I STILL LOVE STEAM TRAINS!!!!!! XD
Yeah I was actually gonna say that it sounded like Frisco 1522 with the L&NE 3-chime.
That L&NE 3 Chime sounds very haunting!
I thought it was a Southern PS-4 Long-bell 3 Chime whistle
@@SuperFoxyRailwayProduction6702 well, it says Lehigh & New England 3 Chine Longbell 3 Chime which sounds similar to a Southern PS-4 Longbell 3 Chime! Plus it also sounds like N&W 611, WM 734, Southern 1401, C&O 2716, T&P 610, Cotten Belt 819 and Frisco 1522!
Awesome video! Was hoping to catch myself trackside in one of the Gorge shots - but alas, no suck luck! Still, great movie!
@StanierBlack5LMS 425s original whistle is a Nathan 6 chime.
i love train so so so so so so so so so so so so much
This is Awesome Footage.
Good Job.
The blue on the a-tank is just that faded. The whistle is not a nathan, its a Hancock.
@xxxDeath9572xxx I dunno probably some Baldwin 3 chime.
Very nice video! By the way, does #425 even wear her Reading 6-chime anymore? Haven't seen any video of her with her regular whistle, only of her special whistles. :)
Great LNE 3-chime!
Adam, quick question. You know that wooden bridge you have to cross to get into Glen Onoko? Is that for cars too or pedestrians only?
Great video. If you ever get up toward Michigan check out Pere Marquette 1225. I have rented her for the day of March 15 2014 and am selling tickets. Might be her first run in five years. There will be a couple of break in runs end of 2013.
love reading and nothern
Is there any chance the four-and-a-quarter will be doing this again, say summer 2010?
I have a question, Was 425 ever owned by the Reading Railroad?
There I am at 2:48. Very nice vid
What railway originally owned #425?
What is 425's " original " whistle?
@rubenisapanic Thanks!
Any idea what R&N #425's 3 most used whistles are?
6:56
i now understand what happened to a blue comet steamer
@LocoCyc It's actually a hancock.
She looks great in blue! I love that swing bell, such a distinct sound compared to when just the clapper rang when the bell was atop the boiler for a while. Maybe the dark blue looked better, but this scheme is definitely better I think with the front end. I hope they don't scrap 2102.
Jacob Woods 2102 will be running within the next 5 years
its like the blue comet
i just went camping there
