The finish on this live steam locomotive is amazing. The build looks perfect : that's a very beautifull loco. Well done. I can't even imagine the tools needed and the hours spent on this little machine.
Thank you for the lovely comment. Yes, it took some eight years to build using traditional engineering tools and machines. Thanks for watching! Best wishes, Chris. PS. Thank you for your lovely comments about the engine. I made it to be a model to enjoy looking at, but at the same time to be able to work really hard. The bearing surfaces are made of the correct metals etc. However, there is still quite a lot of work to keep it in good running order, so in that way it is very much like the original machine!! What really really impresses me is the engineering and build of this amazing Steam Locomotive, it can't be easy to make such a fine model at this scale, what an absolute beauty !
Thank you very much. Yes, it is something of a challenge and balancing act to get a machine which is scale model and at the same time works well. Thanks for watching! Best wishes, Chris. PS. What a neat model! The motions look superb, and even the details simply could not be any better. I half expected you to top up that enamel tea pot as well!
Thanks for watching. Yes, I will have to try a mini cup of tea on a future video!!!…. Chris Ps, if you would like to know more about the books I write, there’s lots of info at petersrailway.com
I just found this video, and wow. Bongo is equally beautiful and adorable. She looks like a well built, well cared for, well loved little engine. I loved all the cab detail; most minis that I've seen tend to not do that. Everything is out of scale to make it easier to handle and read, so I was delighted by everything not only being in scale but functional too!
Thank you so much! Yes, my objective when building the engine was to make it as accurate to scale as possible, but still end up with a machine capable of hard work and behaving like a full size one. Thanks for watching! Best wishes, Chris. PS. @@PetersRailway thank you, its all good though. I have no specific interest in railways, i am more interested in balling content and this is balling for sure, how you filled those 800 little holes with a small oil can, and fired a miniature stove with miniature coal, this is top notch. You just see even without knowing: oh yeah, this thing works exactly like the big one.
That is exactly right. The engine is really just like the full size in details and behaviour. About the only thing which isn't to scale is the diameter of the internal fire tubes in the boiler. They are around 1/2 inch diameter but would be more like 1/4 inch if scaled. The trouble is that they would block up with soot in a few minutes!! All best wishes, Chris.
Your engine is marvelously complex and sophisticated. It is amusing that your fire starting pipe is so simple/elemental. You would be a fun man to know.
Thank you for your support. Yes the pipe is crude but it works. If you let the fire get too hot the plastic starts to melt!! Thanks for watching, Chris
It's so cool and fascinating how these locomotives work and that people drive them as a little train! I would LOVE to try and volunteer here one time !
Glad you liked it! Unfortunately, the railway is on a private farm so not open to the pubic. Speaking as a 71 year old man, I think the name Bongo does not do such a beautiful locomotive justice. But the little boy I once was would have thought it just perfect. I adored steam locomotives when I was a boy and I have never stopped loving them. I very much enjoyed this wonderful and absolutely fascinating video. I have subscribed and I really must investigate your books. I love the cover artwork. Best wishes from Ireland.
A good observation! My original plan was to make the nameplates by cutting out the letters with a tiny piercing saw and soldering them onto the plate. In the end they were photo-etched. But while thinking of cutting them out, I wanted to use a short name!! Gnu was the shortest, but I thought Bongo was more fun. After all, you mustn't take a hobby too seriously!! Please do investigate the books - We claim the age range is from 3 to 90! there’s lots of info here: petersrailway.com/ Thanks for watching, Chris.
Fascinating video, great craftsmanship in making such a beautiful engine. Imagine working on a steam engine for your full time job and then when your holiday comes up you work on your miniature engine, like a busman’s holiday.

Hi, yes it is a lot of fun if you like mechanical machines. If you are retiring it is the perfect hobby as it keeps brain and body active. Also, it can absorb a limitless number of hours!! How on earth do you make the parts so very small and yet maintain function? Those oil pipes alone are so tiny but yet they function and the size of all the plumbing in the cab and such small valves and yet operational at boiler pressure for the injectors. Absolutely amazing. I take it everything is the correct 1:1 scale by the looks? ❤
Hi, Good question! The answer is that it is quite difficult. In truth, the fittings are not truly to scale, so sometimes they are a little larger but in the correct proportions. A good example is the two mechanical lubricators on the running boards. These are in fact 50% oversize to allow the internals and a supply of oil. No one has ever noticed because they are the right shape and have many of the details you would find on the originals. The oil pipes are 1/16" outside dia, with a very tiny hole through the middle. luckily, oil, unlike water, still flows slowly through tiny holes and anyway, the flow rate is almost non-existent! The pressure isn't a problem - as it gets smaller, the pressure has less area to act on. However, injectors on models do not normally work up to 120 psi, so these are adjusted/tuned to work a little higher. Thanks for watching! Best wishes, Chris. PS. That is a beautiful locomotive. Thank you! I discovered these mini steam locomotives in the past few months and became fascinated with how they work. I think this really helped me understand them more!
Thank you very much! Yes, they are fascinating machines - in particular I like the way they are so similar to the original. Yes, that was a fun thing to join in with. The original suggestion was for me to explain how engines work in front of FS. However that would have been with a dead engine, so I suggested using the smaller engine here which we could demonstrate much better. Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching! Best wishes, Chris. PS. What an extraordinary model locomotive, it reminds me of those that used to be in the Museum of Scotland in Chambers Street, creations of such perfection and wonder to me as a small boy in the 50s
Thanks for your lovely comments Colin. When I was a kid my favourite place to visit was the science museum in London where, again, they had all these lovely models. Years ago I visited the live steam club out by Gary Indiana. They had live stream trains of various gauges even a little full size narrow gauge. A beautiful gasoline powered Zephyr too. But of all the trains I saw and rode on, the steam loco of the in this video gauge was my favorite. The way is sounded and felt was so satisfying. Fascinating hobby, I am in awe of the time and talent it takes to build and run these marvelous little machines.
Glad you liked the video. Yes, there is something special about this size of model steam locomotive. There is certainly a lot of time and effort which goes into building one. Absolutely incredible how these work. And this is only a smaller model of a steam locamotive. I'm even more impressed with how powerful they are too, because I've seen videos of these size locomotives actually pulling carriages, with people on it. Incredible, absolutely incredible. 😁
Thanks for the comment - yes it is surprising how powerful these miniature engines are. I don't really have enough wagons to load up the engine fully. However there are a couple of gradients (with curves) on the line which make it a bit challenging at times!! Thanks for watching! Best wishes, Chris. PS. Thanks for the great comment. Maybe my books and videos will give you and your Dad the impetus to have a go at building a railway of your own. It doesn't need to be as big as 7.25" gauge though. Gauge 1 is wonderful too... Chris.
Yes, that is most of the fun of a steam engine - the waiting while the fire gets going and the pressure gauge creeps up the dial... Thanks for watching! Best wishes, Chris. PS. That's quite a small fire to get burning with anthracite, well done. I've got a half ton in the shed I use every now and then in a forge and it's always a challenge to get it burning hot
Thanks!! Yes, it does take a bit of getting going and, if it goes a bit dull, it takes a lot of getting bright again. House coal is so easy by comparison, but it often has a lot of sulphur which damages the silver solder in the boiler and superheaters. Thanks for watching! Best wishes, Chris. PS. @@PetersRailway i have honestly been thinking more about trying to get a small table top steam engine for fun, its relaxing and fun to see the machines run and just listen to them
Good idea! Keep your eye on ebay. The only thing you have to worry about is the boiler. Don't get anything made of steel, as you cannot tell how much it has rusted. Copper is much better!! Chris.
@@PetersRailway at the moment i am unsure what one i would try to get, i would like one that i can take care of and have it last a long time and also have some fun trying things. make a small generator to run led lights maybe set up a drive shaft system to run a small fan or tool just for laughs?
You might enjoy looking at Mamod models. www.mamod.co.uk/ They are simple, but you have the huge benefit of starting with something new which you know will work! The other company to look at is Stuart Models. www.stuartmodels.com/ Much more sophisticated and much more expensive. Enjoy looking and dreaming about what to do. Also, maybe there is a model engineering society or club near you. Then you can start down the road of building your own!!... All best, Chris.

Something I’ve been taught to do is when steaming a boiler from cold is to shut the bottom shut off on one of the sight glasses and leave the top valve on and then open the drain, which allows all the excess oxygen to vent out of the boiler and also gives you an indicator when the boiler has started to make steam (this also gives the boiler abit more life as it reduces oxygen in the boiler to corrode the boiler)
That is a cunning idea! My boiler is made of copper so probably corrosion isn’t a concern. However to show when steam is up it’s a good plan. I usually use the injector steam supply which shows up at the injector overflow. Chris If you would like to know more about the books I write please see www.petersrailway.com

Exceptionally functional and detailed locomotive. Everything works. Everything has to be actually maintained. Never seen anything like it.

Dear Ziyad, Thanks so much for your lovely comments, I am glad you liked the video. More to follow!!... All best wishes Chris.
This is the perfect hobby, it keeps the knowledge alive even if the actual machines disappear more and more.
Thanks for the lovely comment. Yes, it is a way of keeping the knowledge and history alive. I like to think that if you see Bongo in a realistic environment that it might fool you for a moment. Thanks for watching! Best wishes, Chris.

I would LOVE to try and volunteer here one time
!
Glad you liked it! Unfortunately, the railway is on a private farm so not open to the pubic. However, I am sure you will be able to find a model engineering society or club somewhere not too far from you. You will certainly enjoy a visit to them... Thanks for watching! Best wishes, Chris.

After all these years it's nice to see that Henry is still a happy steam engine 😁

I remember seeing your railway in channel 5s Flying Scotsman documentary, it really fascinated me and what a lovely locomotive you have !
Yes, that was a fun thing to join in with. The original suggestion was for me to explain how engines work in front of FS.

I'm even more impressed with how powerful they are too, because I've seen videos of these size locomotives actually pulling carriages, with people on it.

Thanks for the comment - yes it is surprising how powerful these miniature engines are. I don't really have enough wagons to load up the engine fully. However there are a couple of gradients (with curves) on the line which make it a bit challenging at times!!

Thanks!! Yes, it does take a bit of getting going and, if it goes a bit dull, it takes a lot of getting bright again. House coal is so easy by comparison, but it often has a lot of sulphur which damages the silver solder in the boiler and superheaters. Thanks for watching! Best wishes, Chris.

excellent delivery
Thank you for your kind comment!! Chris
Apart from the fact that this is the best model I've ever seen, and that I will ever see in my life, this video demonstrates perfectly why diesel engines were a revolution!!
Thank you for your lovely comment about the engine, much appreciated! You are also quite right: there was a huge amount of labour involved in getting a steam engine ready to operate. Not to mention its thermal efficiency, which was around 5%... Thanks for watching, Chris.

Absolutely amazing, thank you for sharing your video
My pleasure! I will have to make some more, but waiting for the weather to get a bit warmer!!... Thanks for watching! Best wishes, Chris.

So much to do and so many parts to remember what they do but it's worth it
Thank you for the understanding of what is involved. Yes, there is a lot, but that is what makes it such a good hobby! Thanks for watching! Best wishes, Chris.

Chris

You don't really start a steam locomotive, you wake her up.
That is so true, and the slower you wake her up, the better, especially for the boiler and the cups of tea one can drink while the steam pressure rises... Thanks for watching! Best wishes, Chris.

nice is the line similar to the Eastbourne miniature Steam railway I would love to see Bongo visit there to work along side their Flying Scotsman
Hi Terry, yes, it would be great for Bongo to visit there one day. The trouble is the upheaval of moving a heavy and fragile machine. However, I will try to visit the EMSR one day... Thanks for watching! Best wishes, Chris.

Do you have a video of the actual steam engine build?
I really enjoy your videos. I love the idea of this being a family venture with you and your children.
Sorry, but I don't have that. However, I am going to do a video about driving the engine and all the controls etc. Also, I will be making some about the details of the machine. At the moment, I am overhauling the little tank engine and am making some shots of that to put into to a future film. Thanks for your lovely comments, and Thanks for watching! Best wishes, Chris.

Magnificent catches of the model trains, I like it 5 stars, keep up the great work, my friend, you earned a new subscriber, Greetings from Portugal to the UK.
Thank you for your lovely comment, much appreciated!! Greetings to Portugal from the UK - last time I was in your country, I visited the station at Regua. There were several abandoned steam locomotive there, around an old turntable. Now there are fewer - you can see them on Google Earth.
Thanks for watching! Best wishes, Chris.
