The meat are dry because we have been taught that we need to cook a lot of meat well done long before other cultures influenced us, when you cook it well done level, the fat anything liquid will be dry
Thanks for coming to Jiwon and inspiring our buffet concept in the first place Jimmy. Looking forward to welcoming you back for our new and improved buffet!!
I went to Indonesia in the mid 90s and I still wish I could go back. Mind you when I went it wasn't, as safe I guess you could say. But the people were so nice and kind (minus one cab driver, but you get that in every country lol) and the food was incredible. In fact, a couple of places I went to, wouldn't let me pay for my food and insisted on just giving me the meals for free. And it was some of the best food I had while in the country. Mind you, I don't eat seafood, or certain lamb dishes etc. but these guys just gave me some of the best chicken I've ever had and one of the best bowls of noodles I've ever had. Indonesia is certainly a more modern place now than when I went 30 years ago, and you have so many more options food wise. AND the street food scene, holy crap.
"I could have politely declined it, which might have been the right thing to do... But working for a corporation in the past taught me one thing, and that is: Sometimes it's pretty f**king nice to be selfish and greedy." - I was shocked, awed, and dying laughing from that one, Jimmy!
The reason why meat is mostly dry in Indonesia is because alot of the population thinks that meat having juice makes it raw/uncooked. When i was working in a restaurant there was many complaints if the fried chicken was still juicy because people think it hasn't been cooked properly, so we had to fry it till it was overcooked but dry. I think it is just because the population isn't used to itt.
So true thats common in Bangladeshi culture too, any sign of redness on meat equals raw to them. I've been enjoying my medium rare steaks for years now ;)
14:23 That's the thing that I noticed too as an Indonesian It's more like we're afraid of the meat not being cooked enough, so we just wing it and add more minutes cooking it 😂
That's also the case in the Philippines - I guess it's from living in a tropical environment, as it was rather risky (until recently) to serve undercooked land-based meat.
People in indonesia should really try medium rare steaks. I'm Indonesian myself and used to only eat my steaks well done, but once I've tried medium rare I can't never go back
The galbi jjim looks SOO good and you are right about it being expensive in Korea! Now imagine the price in Singapore sigh! And the ones here prob aren't even as good as the good ones in Korea! The restaurant was so generous!
the reason why indonesian food only exist in 38$ buffet is because we could get that for some cheap price around 1-2$ and as an indonesian myself i wouldnt pay 38$ just for a nasi goreng and other indo stuff 😭😭, btw thanks for coming to indonesia jimmy, hope u hv a great time here
True at most 1$ - 2$ which is roughly 30k Rupiahs is more than enough for us to buy a decent meal at the average store or small street side restaurants. Foreigners would probably question how the 38$ buffet here is priced like that, but to us Indonesians that price is already helluva expensive for the average peeps. So yeah It's cool that Jimmy gave his honest thoughts during the whole video even if some of the food may not look pretty lol
One of reason why you can only find Indonesian food in the most expensive buffet is because you can easily find street food stalls that sell better Indonesian food for waaay cheaper. These Indonesian food buffets usually targeting upper class Indonesians who act like they’re too classy to eat street food.
Great variety of food & I guess that’s one of the main benefits of buffets, you get to try a wide variety. Also apparently you’re my Spotify 2023 wrap #1 artist that I listened to, Jimmy. 😂
I’d say why the meat is usually dry because we don’t really have good quality cow that’s sold in the traditional market which make our meat a little tough to chew. Which is why people really make sure that the meat is cooked really well and are usually made into stews and rendang! But we do import meat for steak too
Hi jimmy, when you visit the $38 buffet hotel during weekend, they will serve you infinite amount of german style pork leg, sashimi, endless seafood including crab and lobsters, etc, but the price will be slightly more expensive!
Indonesia - Jakarta is one of prime destination for Korean migrants. Back in late 1990s - they are mostly Korean church missionaries, and they mostly nestled in my neighbourhood of Kelapa Gading - we have so many Korean restaurants and supermarkets, including a very big Lotte mart, Mu Gung Hwa, and Hanyang. Today though, they are all kinds of Koreans, including our very own national team football coach, and all those Hyundai / LG Chem engineers. But the trendiest is definitely in Jalan Senayan, Kebayoran Baru - a lot of Korean shops, including barber shop, and 2 storey Mu Gung Hwa supermarket. We have Ajummas and Ajushis making their own fresh batch of various kimchis as well as made-to-order Yangnyeom or Ganjang gejang or Korean seasoned raw crab. It is quite crazy. Since Korean food is directly introduced in Indonesia by actual Korean, they are largely still very authentic compared to everywhere else nearby, even in more cosmopolitan places like Sydney, Australia and Singapore. Korean cuisine is also relatively very new in Indonesia, there is just not much time to evolve or blend in with local dishes or "fusion", besides local dishes starting to use gochujang sauces.
Hi Jimmy. The reason why beef is dry in Indonesia is because the islamic religion forbids meat to have any blood within it. Halal meat is typically quite dry, which is usually fought by using fat, hence why döner has a slab of fat and butter on the top that soaks the meat and makes it tender.
@@jimmykimtv Actualy that's not the real reason, it's just their traditions of cooking meat Islamic ways of slaughter allows all blood to leave the animal's body before cutting it, therefore the meat has no blood, so it is normal for one to eat medium rare and juicy meat as Muslims since it's still halal 😂.
Would be nice if you could've actually gotten an authentic Indonesian food experience 😀. Indonesia is massive with a very diverse culinary heritage. Having an experience in a region would be very different from another. Looking forward for a deep dive into a more genuine Indonesian experience, Jimmy!
Great video:) Always great job. Your having the best life traveling and eating delicious food:) Wow only $8 for that buffet!! That is amazing price and looks delicious. $4 for dim sum!! Wow! Restaurant looks clean and nice. Wondering since your there maybe do some traveling content too:) I would love to know how to get from airport to your hotel and where you normally stay and other options. Places that travelers must go:)
13:57 i'm Indonesian, and my parent used to have an steak restaurant in bandung couple of years ago, and yes the meat actually different, is much more tougher than korean, japan, and aussie meat because most of our cousine in meat usually cooked much longer (like rendang, soto, and curry) compared to a steak, it's what i know from experience it myself.
I think the reason of why only the most expensive buffet has Indonesian food, is because of accessibility You can find it all the menu in the warung or warteg spread across the city, but for foreigners, they usually pursue "one size fit all" solution Hence why it's a staple menu in the hotel buffet, as it's a meeting point per se
Hey Jimmy! Just wanted come on here and let you know that life’s been bleh lately and coming in to watch your videos gives me comfort. So thank you for being you and making me laugh! 😊😊
Theres about every typeof asian food available in Jakarta, from Indian to Chinese to Turkish, you can find almost every type of dish from different cultures.
Wow, a variety of deliciousness…!!! Haha, hopefully you didn’t get sick from the sketch sushi hehehe.. but great prices as well for all of it… really want some dim sum now hehe!!!
I'd say a lot of South East Asian countries tend to go for 'well done' with the meat and sometimes a little too well probably because of the irrational fear that uncooked meat will cause bugs to form in your stomach. Of course that's not always the case but considering the tropical climate, it definitely has affected the culture with cooking meat
in my opinion, Hotel Kempinski is not the best place if you are looking for the food. They have great hospitality, don't get me wrong, but to be honest their foods are just so so. If you want to try great buffet in a 5-stars hotel restaurant in jakarta area, my suggestion will be at 2 places, "Satoo" at Shangrila Hotel or "Asia Restaurant" at Ritz Carlton Hotel Kuningan. They offer buffet around the same price as Kempinski, but taste much better (at least in my opinion)
You should come to pasar lama in the night around 5pm to 9pm. They sell very good foods there. I personally recommend serabi royal there. It's pancake with durian sauce that is very good!. And they have a lot of foods there as well, So you should visit!
I'm late but the $4 buffet is abit expensive, its around Rp50.000 and the food here normally cost around Rp15.000-Rp35.000 (in Tanggerang) I've bought 10 dimsumsfor Rp8.000 (less than a dollar) it taste really good too
Try weekend brunch/lunch/dinner all you can eat in 5 stars hotel, they have wider variety menus that’s not available in weekday like lobster, oysters, steak, beef Wellington, salmon en croute. It’s more expensive though but worth it especially when you use buy 1 get 1 payment using local bank credit card.
finally. welcome to indonesia, jimmy! hope u enjoy ur stay. and if u have some times please visit gunung bromo (bromo mountain) and go to bukit teletubbies (teletubbies hill). it was burned several months ago but now it's so beautiful. just like windows xp legendary homescreen lol
Wow $4.45 for AYCE DIm Sum would be a dream to me. Where I'm at it's $7.25 for just 4 Har Gao. If you take into account a 12% sales tax and 20% tip, just that one dish alone comes out $9.50. Last time I went out for a Dim Sum meal it was about $145 for 4 after tax and tip.
In the Kempinski Buffet, there should be a day where there is a Paulaner section. That section has some fresh carved brisket, german meatloaf, Crispy Pork, German Bratwurst, and also some sides.
Oh shit, welcome to Indonesia 😁✌️ Best buffet in Indonesia usually in the hotel. 1. Kempinski hotel Indonesia 2. Shangri-La hotel satoo 3. Hotel mulia ( have steak) And thank God you Went to the number 1 😁,Kempinski buffet is my favourite,i go there many times every year. Too bad you didn't try the soto which is great. The local beef menu are all well done mostly but some make it soft using flour coating. For grilled meat buffet, there is gyukaku, kintan. For shabu shabu beef there is saburi.

Re: chewy/dry meat, yep this is what people get wrong when they eat Indonesian beef-based traditional recipes like rendang, dendeng, empal, etc. They expect 'good' to be 'soft/tender' but we like chewy meats - because this means flavour, and we don't mind doing a bit of work when we eat. And usually we don't eat beef on its own like in other types of cuisine. E.g. we don't focus everything on one big chunk of meat on the plate.
