    A uniquely Canadian perspective on our closest neighbours. America used to be the best country on Earth by far. Now it's not even in the top 10. Nobody knows Americans like Canadians do. It's a love / hate relationship that is unique to the two of us. Watching America become what it is becoming is like watching your big brother slowly die from a drug addiction. We wish we could help, but they won't listen. The song captures this perfectly. Amazing tune too. Best thing I've heard on the radio for a long time. I love the Walt Whitman references.

      haha protection? from what? your pathetic nation is a trading partner and thats it. I dont ever recall Canada ever calling to you inbred country for protection.
      Educated yourself on the war of 1812 when Canada burnt down your precious white house with all its inbred slave owners

      last time I checked your big powerful nation has been attacked twice. Pearl Harbor and 911 couldn't have been prevented. Not to mention Canada has larger oil and gas reserves than the US so where's all this protection we need from your army? your army has some of the dumbest soldiers to ever wear a uniform

      +MrJabloney it appears you have seriously misunderstood my original comment. I compared America to a big brother. We love you, and we are always there for each other. We see bad things happening to you right now, and wish we could help. We want to make you better. I don't know why you got so offended, although that is an American trait. As for being influencial in the world, we certainly don't get the headlines like you do, but when you are a member of the G7, NATO, UN, Commonwealth and Francophonie like we are, you most certainly have influence in the world. Our regulated banks, universal health care and gun control are envied around the world. Canada is not close to perfect. We have many problems. Americans and others have helped us through our hard times. It's just that right now things are a big mess in the USA, and it's really a shame to have a once great nation in such tatters. That's what I took out of the lyrics to a fantastic song. Wintersleep probably have an entirely different meaning. That's what's great about art. The Nationalistic rhetoric really gets old. Time to grow up a bit, don't you think?

      I mean, I hear what you're saying and you're pretty accurate, but I didn't see this song as saying anything bad about America at all. I thought it was pointing out how great America is. "Perennial with the earth and freedom, love and law and life." Perennial means everlasting, not ending, or infinite. That means the lyrics are showing a great respect to America. Saying it's everlasting and not ending when it comes to the earth, freedom, love, and laws. But at the same time it's making a note that things have changed and they aren't what they used to be, if the worst is true? Is it just a waste of time? I think it's a beautiful song, pointing out that America is a great place, but it's struggling, if the worst is true we should worry for the future of America. But is it just a waste of time? can it even be saved. I'm American, I love America, I live real close to the Canadian border and listen to your stations so I was able to listen in on this jam.

      Don't hate man, America has had an awful president for 8 years, not unlike Toronto's disaster of a mayor. We've been on a downward spiral for a while, and more and more people are born everyday to liberals with horrible ideals of America such as yourself, the future does look grim.

    Thank you, Wintersleep for this amazing song!! I played it three years ago, when my depression was worst. It was at Christmas Time, and I was so sad, that I played this, and my depression went away.

    I hear a hint of Neil Young’s Long May You Run. Great driving syncopation, unifying harmonies & a searing melancholic theme - &, still so true north, strong & free! 🇨🇦

    I think many people took the song the wrong way. I don't think it's a criticism of America, its about wishing our neighbour to be at the top, where they used to be, and where they belong. Like someone already said, US used to be the greatest country that ever was, and seeing them going down, especially in the last few years, is painful even for us, even if we live in Canada. Our respective countries have a siblings like relationship. But I have hope for the future. 2025 is coming soon.

      Glorious Gandalf I think it's more a statement that you guys seem more divided then ever over the last election. some people felt trump was going to change America, others felt he was going to ruin it. but honestly Canada isn't much better. we have so much racial tensions between each other that we don't really address

    • @altf4635
      @altf4635 4 года назад +3

      I think it's based on how some people feel that America lost its place as the "Melting Pot" and a safe haven for people around the world during the Cold War, especially during the McCarthy era. And if you look at it, people were much happier back in the 20s and 30s in America. Even though there was a massive economic and social disaster, everyone enjoyed life and was smiling most of the time. However, America has descended from that position and gone backwards since the 50s. I'm not saying every other country is better than America, but the massive change between 30s and 40s America was as contrasted as black and white. While America is just another country now, that's exactly what is is; another country. The thing that sets it apart was that while in other countries things seem to improve every generation, America had a drastic fall from the spot it used to hold, which is now a muddle mess of different flags.
      Also, all of the clips are from the 20s (1920s, not today), which supports my theory, and considering this is from the Wintersleep RUclips channel, that's something to take into account.
