I remember when I first played this game (after finishing Dead Island) that the gameplay far outshone the story. At least until I did the Following; I agree that it's the best part of the game. Good review, as always.

Nightmare describes pretty well how it went for me on my first playthrough on that difficulty. Stomping on enemies who are climbing up to me or laying down on the ground was my only effective tool to kill the basic zombies, especially the virals. Actually fighting them at the start was almost impossible, because it just takes too many hits for a zombie to die, which sucks when the weapons break down before the zombie does.
I shouldn't have been so stubborn, but alteast now I can say I beat the game and the dlc on my first playthrough on the hardest difficulty :D (really not worth it)

What sets this game apart from me is just how much different the power dynamic is between day and night time. I love it. During the day (especially one you get guns) it was a super fun and satisfying power fantasy that makes you feel like an overpowered killing machine. But during the night cycle the tables turn completely and it because a super tense survival game. It feels almost like 2 different games. The only other game I can think of off hand that has a similar system is Metroid Dread with the e.m.m.i sections feeling kinda like the night cycle in dying light.
Then there is the map diversity. The base game has 2 towns that play very different from each other and then on top of that "the following" expansion is more or less an entire new campaign in a totally new map that is even more drastic of a change.
This game is just special. Nothing feels quite like it. And the amount of love and support the devs gave this game over 7 years is something you almost NEVER see is the videogame industry.

  • @OneNot
    @OneNot 2 года назад +5

Regarding difficulty, I would personally recommend Hard even for the first playthrough and Nightmare if you're doing coop. At least for everyone reasonably adept at this type of open-world action game. One of the most important aspects of the game is nighttime and the threats and opportunities it presents and to truly make the most out of it and the rest of the game too, I think Hard/Nightmare is the way to go. That might also partly "fix" the assault rifle being too powerful. The unfortunate thing is that zombies might feel too damage spongy at times if you haven't crafted/found great weapons, but I think the overall experience is improved regardless.
I also think you could have focused a bit more on the parkour in the review. I think that is by far the best part of the game. The nighttime chases for example are extremely tense and scary at first and incredibly fun later as the initial scare factor runs out, but either way a great experience.
Anyways, a good review. I recently found your reviews and I have to say 100% reviews is an interesting gimmick and you do it well. Subscribed.

Maaan I struggled with this game won story mode, especially in the second open world map where you'd get more special zombies asnd humans to fight you...I can't even imagine how impossibly difficult hard or nightmare would be.

Gotta disagree with you about hellraid it's the most worthwhile dlc in my opinion just based off the weapons you can get to help you in the main game when I start a new save I always do a bit of he'll raid first so I can start out using weapons like the foul blade rather than the junk you get at the beginning like the table leg plus corrupted justice is much easier to unlock than that darn bozak bow

So i bought the definitive edition of this very recently and a complaint i have about it is that like all these games that give you op gear from the get go, ruins the natural game progression. Like i stumbled into hellraid not knowing what it was, did 30 mins worth and was able to buy unlocked weapons in the main game which are really strong. Then i passed the point in the campaign where you finish the prologue and allll of the dlc crafting options became available.

Im intrigued by your statement about how much you disliked the second half of the game. I actually found it fairly even all the way till the end fight, which i found terrible. I agree on the arenas, especially the first one when you dont have enough skill points to make it fun, but the escape afterwards is pretty fun. What exactly drove you to dislike the second half? I'd love more details.
Definitely agree with you about the following though. Loved it through, and while i enjoyed the main game, the following just did it better. (Did you launch the... um thing... dont want to leave a spoiler)

I feel like you did yourself a bit of a disservice by using firearms so much ;p
I personally always have one of those rifles in my weapon wheel at all times, but nine times out of ten, I try to kill using parkour abilities or melee combat. Makes things much more interesting, especially since playing on anything above normal personally feels too obnoxious to tolerate.
The fact that so many guns are around brings great peace of mind, but of course it's up to the player how they want to handle each encounter :3
As somebody who's played through the game to 100% almost a dozen times split between every platform that it exists on, I definitely agree with a solid majority of your video! It's still my favorite game, but not one that anybody should buy specifically for the story ;p The gameplay rocks all kinds of socks, and I respect Techland a great deal! :3

Just to do something different, I MAY just pick one game I really enjoy to 100%...after all so MANY pros like yourself do it, so maybe I also will have at it to see some enhancement to my games.
