Fair review. I liked the open world at the beginning when resources were scarce. After leveling up I started missing more variety on things to do. Really strong story and I did like the character.

I actually finished this game just now after 50hrs! I agree with all the points mentioned in the video. It has a Ubisoft-esque approach that gets bland after a short while. What kept me playing was the story. I was curious to see what will happen next especially when I saw all the secret endings (NERO scientist one), which is a perfect way to set up a possible sequel for the game (it unfortunately got axed lol).
I would personally give it a 7/10. Grab the game when it's on sale. 👌

Great review. I watch several game review RUclipsrs and this one is the best. The videos are to the point and not rushed. The praise and criticism is well explained. I particularly like acknowledgment that if someone likes game X then they will like Y (or if they don’t they won’t). I believe the reason why the reviews are good is that the channel started with relatively complex games (crpgs) and they need some thought to play and to explain.
As for Days Gone, I bought it on PS4 when it came out but my family deemed it too violent so I could only play it when everyone was out or in bed. I really liked the bit that I played. I don’t play FPS games other than Stalker/Metro so what might be tired to some people is fresh for me. I’ll have to get the PC version.

  • @TheIrisCZ
    @TheIrisCZ 3 года назад +8

I usually dislike the "ubisoft gameplay" in open world games, but to be honest, it didn't bother me in Days Gone a bit. The main reason being that I was never seeking out the side missions themselves, but I let the game lead me to them. This way after a mission I had to clear a camp, because it was in a way of fast travel I wanted to use. Because of this I found one of the power-up trailers, so I did that one as well. When I knew I was too weak to take on the horde, it seemed logical to do one or two of the camp side missions to level myself and the reputation in said camp to buy better weapons. Unlike you I found the hordes very difficult (perhaps because I was playing on a controller on PS5), but rewarding.
Because of this, I enjoyed the game imensely and honestly was never bored, which is something I have problems with lately even with the best games - for example I cannot finish Horizon Zero Dawn, despite me wanting to do so so badly. I never liked the "Biker Gang" theme anywhere else and was also kinda tired of the zombie trope. However, the story of Days Gone is gripping and enjoyable after the first so-so 4 hours at the beginning.
Definately the biggest surprise on PlayStation 4 for me along with Persona 5. If I had time, I would gladly replay the game just for the story. Still keeping my figers crossed for a sequel, even though it's been said it won't be happening.

    • @tenorenstrom

Agree completely with this. Down to not being able to finish Horizon. The world in Days gone feels completely different than an Ubisoft world (of which Horizon very much is one). I almost never check the map for things to tick off. Like you I cleared out infestations not to tick off a box, but because I wanted the fast travel. I also stumbled upon Nero camps rather than finding them on the map. To me this game has an open world design far better than most its peers. I would even say that is what sets this game apart.

Mort, fantastic video as always. I am sorry you did not like the game too much but I completely understand your point of view. I have enjoyed it so far, but yes I agree. There to many missions that rise and repeat. Clear out nest, do a few fetch missions and progress the story a bit, rinse and repeat.

  • @JumpingJack6

The most underrated game ever released in my opinion, it has a very nice progression system, rendered beautifully, the story (for me, like you) is the strength, a nice mix of activities, from action and run and gun to stealth and sneak, the models and animations are smooth and the game mechanics is one of the easiest to master. A lot of stuff is standard for an open world, which was a criticism of the game I get it... but what the game does it does well and compliment the story and characters. There is a lot of detail in this game, I call it the Red Dead Redemption 2 of the zombie genre. @13:22 -- You might have missed the detail. The "zombies" are not dead, they were genetically altered by a virus that causes their behavior (classical zombies are reanimated undead). The story goes that the virus spread rapidly and everyone got it, some people recovered with no impact and are now immune (natural immunity that comes after recovering from a natural infection).

    • @allgaming9737

Its fun either ways, its just that the horde challanges are hard and after you complete them with gold, you get more experienced on how to fight the hordes.
Also its not requiered to do challanges or side-quests to fight hordes. You can even fight some at the start of the game if you want. Its just that you get scared seeing a horde on the first run and would run away rather than fighting them head on.

Hard to say without looking at in person, but it sounds like your fan curve settings. GPUs fans operate on a curve where they ramp up as they come under load. Sometimes this causes the fans to spike up to their highest RPMs if the GPU hits max load even for just a few moments. Try using whatever software came with your GPU to adjust the curve and see if it helps

I have generally noticed reviewers seem to become one of two types. Those who love (or at least claim to in their reviews) everything that is popular, and those who become tired of the same old mechanics and story beats.
I don't mean this as an insult Mort and I hope if you read this you don't take it as such as I like your content. But what your review sounds like to me is you have played so many games like this that it is boring to you now, which is completely understandable. You at least don't sound cynical of anything that isn't completely unique.
Despite playing a lot of games I don't play as many as you review and while I don't disagree with anything in your review I was never at all bothered by how standard some of the gameplay elements were in this game as they are executed very well. The game wasn't long enough to get bored with the side content like a UBISOFT collectaton and the main story broke up the mechanics fairly well. I will agree that the challenge of the hordes disappears near the end, but it was still a pretty cool mechanic.

  • @Ultr4l0f

I just finished all the post-ending of the game.
Man. It was a pretty solid game, but it sure felt rushed at places.
It was close to being awsome.
But slightly janky controls, weird cutscenes, as in the timeing of them
And the blue questionmarks / "points of interest" realy lacked oomph
I played at normal difficulty. And at the end of the game I was invunerable. Had for quite some time aquired all skills I wanted, had a powerful bike and used the same weapons for a dozen hours.
    All in all?
    3 out of 5
A little more polish. Game balance. Timeing of cutscenes and how the story progresses.
It had the potential to be a strong 4 out 5.
I grew to realy like Deacon and his story, the world they built and I kinda want to take a trip to Oregon now :P

It borrows some elements of Ubisucks openworld design like the tower map unfogging and repetitive side missions. But it's more akin to Mad Max with the resource scavenging for scrap to repair the bike and the fuel depletion of the bike, and ammo/bombs crafting. That, the story, and taking on the hordes, is what can make it an enjoyable experience. If you buy it into those premises. I don't like zombie games but this one is the exception because of those elements. How the side missions are presented to you is what falls short in this game, and how repetitive they can be in their objectives like in the ubisuck games.
The numerous bugs at launch is what did hurt the game sales the most.

Even if it's really good, I just avoid games that are AAA-style human on human, guns, cars/motorcycles, etc. You know, basically reality. Or the fantasy of someone with very grounded in reality imagination. I really prefer games with fantasy/sci-fi or otherwise "out there" elements. I need that in my escapism. So...I've never really played any games like this. Sure, I've tried them out at friend's houses or whatever. But I've never purchased one. I'm the same way with the fiction I read and (mostly) the shows/movies I watch.

RDR2 is amazing for its exploration, and how real life like animals in nature behave. Which give the hunting for crafting/resources an extra layer. The long story and the side missions are also interesting. For more immersion I recommend it to be played in 1st person, and loving and taking care of your horse like it's your wife. I recommend RDR2 only if you like spending long times in nature. Lots of horse riding.
