Ended up playing through it three times in a row, phenomenal game idc what anyone says. The dialog can get pretty corny, but it's such a fun game and I really wanted to know where the NERO ending was heading.

On the one hand, awesome gameplay/world and an extremely solid 3rd act. On the other hand, the first half or more of the game felt like you were skipping between different seasons of a TV show, picking episodes at random. Characters randomly changing or developing off screen, relationships randomly changing between interactions, moments where Deacon just had his motivations change out of the blue because it was needed in a certain quest. And that is coming from someone who Platinumed the game and even owns the Collector's Edition of it. It just doesn't do anything particularly good, outside of how pretty they rendered some parts of Oregon and Deacon's VA. Story is a pretty by the books zombie apocalypse with an intense sequel bait end (that will now almost assuredly never happen). Gunplay was really off feeling, god forbid you tried using the crossbow in the early game. Human AI was really bad, freaker AI was decent enough. Hordes, one of the game's huge selling points, often just boiled down to kiting a mob around with an LMG/giant molotovs. The sneaking segments were RELLY bad from what I remember. Bugs galore. Quite frankly, I ended up just thinking anyone giving it 8+ out of 10s were being awfully generous. And then there's the lead story guy who then went on that whole "media hates gruff white guys" campaign.... even though Joel/Kratos/Nathan Drake/etc exist in the same Playstation ecosystem. I think there are often a lot of revisionist takes on this game, using the now finalized product 1-2 years down the line to say the game has always been good... but its just like Cyberpunk, just because it is actually functional now does not magically erase what a chaotic launch it had and original review scores reflecting that.

I had a bit more " strategy " going in for my second go around and the game really did blow me away. I think it's pretty clear that if the devs had everything at their disposal, that they would have been able to do a lot more. There are portions of the game where it also feels as if there are supposed to be choices or even a bigger deep dive into the different camps, etc. but for what we got, I think it's a good game.
This game is up there with the last of us in terms of zombies games imo but I moved and never got to finish the game all the way sadly
So happy that I finally decided to pick this up for $16 on Steam.
I played this game day 1, I had so much fun
Please come back and finish the game 🥺
