Days Gone Protagonist is an instant classic. I honestly loved all the bad moves he made, some how his mistakes while all fantastical all felt realistic at the same time. I hope that team stays together and make another game.
It had the best zombie mechanics out of any zombie game I have played. It always felt on the edge of flirting with disaster and being overwhelmed. The story wasn't something that resonated with me but it was serviceable. But for me, personally, a Days Gone sequel is greater than any live service product being developed.
Days Gone just wasn't a game setup for a 'review cycle' It really takes about 10-12hrs to get going. But man, what a game. One of my favorites I've finished in the past few years. Once I got over the hump, I could. not. stop. playing it. I think it really caught wind when it released on PC. Such an excellent Summer Steam Deck game. It's on sale now...If you haven't...you need to play it. Days Gone and The Division 1 & 2. 3 games that didn't really review well, and had some issues at launch, but all 3 are among my favorites. EVER. Patiently waiting for a Days Gone 2, and a Division 3. I loved Ghost of Tsushima, don't get me wrong...But I think Days Gone was definitely the more interesting play.
I was the same. I was addicted to it when it came out. A little slow in the beginning but it was one of the first games in a while where I was completely engrossed in it.
The poor performance was a big factor in the reception of the game at launch. It wasn't until the game got significant updates that people came around and it gained a cult fanbase.
@@SolidSnake240 the performance was definitely annoying. It was something I was able to look past though. I still played and finished the game. Things were more enjoyable once the performance was fixed.
I heavily disagree with that horde thing at the end of the game. I think that's brilliant, makes the game have an awesome progression. I enjoyed days gone a lot, I'm not a PS guy but I I played it on pc and it was great. I'm not a fan of playstation never owned one but I have to say they make damn good games. Good thing they release them on pc too.
I'm with you here. Having the hordes earlier in the game when you're weaker with fewer weapons would've been impossible. It would have also made the game feel very repetitive and extremely boring by the time you join the militia at Crater Lake and are still fighting hordes. I thought the game's slow burn story and progression were a nice change of pace from the other game I was playing at the time, AC Valhalla, which was literally 200 hours of the same thing over and over. These reviewers have truly terrible takes sometimes. I DID appreciate though that Luke made a follow up review apologising for judging Days Gone too harshly at first. He's one of very few who had the honesty to do that.
also the hordes were there throughout the whole game if I remember. Assuming you know where they were, or just stumbled across them, you were able to fight them from practically the very beginning of the game. It was just near impossible to do so when you had only the early game equipment. I remember trying to fight one some time in the middle of the game and just kept dying before giving up. Though it is true that they don't become part of the story until you're in the last like fifth of the game.
@@sanddude20 Yup; you can use a lot of equipment to take out the hordes in the early goings, but it's extremely difficult. I liked the game for the fact that you needed a ton of supplies to actually take down hordes. It wasn't like World War Z where they just dump infinite ammo in your path and the hordes never really feel challenging.
Evan if most people bought in sales or whathever, having a large player base in the first game already is a pretty good indication that the sequel would be succesfull.
I never played a more immersing game. Everything in it feels so good to do. I specially love how the zombies look and how they all behave. Not the cartoony nonscary zombie we see elsewhere. Some of the missions I will remember forever.
I think volume of sales is just as important in this discussion cause if the volume is high enough, it doesn’t matter if Ghost sold more units at full price; the total net profit could be in the same ball park. Also, a high number of after initial release sales tells us that a sequel would be positioned well to sell much better than it’s predecessor; the initial game was breaking new ground and had to stand out. It’s normal for game one to not sell that well in a franchise on initial release. Look at the Dark Souls franchise
Hordes are Accessible at the beginning of the games and there are loot locations that have premade attractors, pipe bombs, mollys & grenades, which make it doable early game.
Allegedly Days Gone made money but Sony execs don't like it. So while it makes sense to make a sequel the Sony execs don't want to do it. They should just sell the IP.
Days Gone is a beloved game by many now sure, but the game was criticized on release for many bugs and framerate issues on release. They only have themselves to blame for people not buying their game full price on launch.
Sequel idea: it becomes canon that Deek used all the NERO injectors scattered around in the first game. Little did he know, while the injectors increased his health, stamina, and focus, it was actually turning him into a higher evolved Freak. Enter sequel story with beats about him fighting the change, maybe losing his mind temporarily. A cool gameplay thing could be where usually traversal is achieved with the motorcycle, there's a sequence where Deek is either fully or half-transformed, and you can run fast like the Reacher in DG1. Maybe O'Brian is the final boss.
i would say this is a better idea for the third game. because the devs said they would have continued with the idea the freaks are getting smarter: building camps, wooden spears and armor, but i feel like that would be less interesting if you had the deek-freak situation. but for a third game that would be awesome
@@andreajaillard8149 I'd be on board with that. A Deek-Freak does seem like the finality of stakes for the series, and building tension with increasingly intelligent freaks throughout a 2nd entry would be a great chance to develop the severity of the situation and what might happen to Deek. Maybe he comes the King Freak at the very end but in a moment of humanity kills them all. Spitballing at this point lol
Days gone is a perfect game for zombie genre and the fans of this genre would agree Some people say it starts slow but then your just looking for a video game dont really want an immersive experience I thought it was perfect the way it makes you feel the dread and overall how it gradually shows you stuff not just hordes coming at you all the time I think it is one of the most immersive games in that sense Days gone and dying light 1 are best games in this genre for the same reason
It's important to remember that the game's success shouldn't be solely judged by its initial sales figures, especially considering the impact of targeted negative reviews. Unfortunately, Sony hasn't disclosed the launch sales, but it's clear that the game continues to be popular years after its release, which is a significant achievement. Whether the $9 million all came from post-launch sales or amidst the review bombing, it's still a noteworthy amount. This situation highlights how certain influential voices led to the game's sequel not getting green-lit, despite its strong connection with fans and its fun gameplay. It's disappointing that Sony chose to align with these voices.
I agree with the notion of "if you want to support a studio/game/developer, buy the game on release at full price" BUT..... we have all learned (unfortunately from experience) that most games are buggy or unfortunately unplayable upon release and most of us know to wait a while for those bugs to be fixed. It's a double edged sword because instead of looking at overall sales, they want release day/week/month sale numbers without taking any of the above into account! I loved days gone and would love a sequel but I know it s not going to happen now which is such a shame!
Or maybe they didn’t like the game because of the pacing issues and other reasons ? Stop trying to push a culture war just because people disagree with you lol By the way, review bombing is something users do. Critics don’t do that lol.
Also how the hell do you know you love a game until you play it? That's the biggest problem with these companies making decisions based off initial sales. They either gloss over hidden gems or steamroll out sequels to good games that fall flat.
I remembered seeing Days Gone and being interested due to Sam Witwer being in it, but thinking "Eh, it might not be good, I'll pass." I ended up picking it up on a sale on the PSN, and was very happy with how good it was. It wasn't any one thing that I can point to, it was a bunch of tiny details that it did, that just made the whole quality of life experience so much more fun. Like how the fast travel system was unlocked when you literally cleared the road of threats between 2 points. Until you did that, you couldn't FT there. And when you did clear it, you still had to account for time and fuel in the FT, which meant you still might not make it the whole trip before running out of gas. OR, you might decide to just travel it yourself, because you could usually drive the distance manually MUCH faster than the FT system. And sometimes you were working on a timer, and that was the higher priority. Further in keeping with the bike, I loved how the muffler on your motor was a key component, because loud noises is a BAD thing in a zombie apocalypse, encouraging the player to do things like cut the engine and coast whenever going downhill, both to conserve fuel and to reduce detection from zombies. I loved how the story system worked as these independently tracked arcs that you could track and follow at your own pace. I loved the various supporting cast of characters, who all felt VERY fleshed out and real, even if they were ultimately just a quest dispenser from a mechanical standpoint. I ESPECIALLY loved the character who ends up betraying the party later on, because at first I thought they were going to go against the trope, and not have him end up being a badguy, because nothing he was saying was actually WRONG. In fact, 9 times out of 10, the goal he wanted, and the motivation for that goal, were in line with the protagonist. But for some reason (that I personally think wasn't actually warranted in the script), the protagonist just hated him. But I loved that conflict of "Yeah I don't like you, but I agree with you" that they had going on for the game. Overall, it became one of my favorite zombie survival games of all time. And it is a shame it didn't do well given what we ended up getting.
I like mad max broke my heart that we won’t get a part 2 cause if shadow of Mordor sequel could do some improve mad max sequel would of been perfect the combat would of been flawless
"The problem is not enough people bought it. If it sells 5 millions copies, Sony is gonna make a sequel". My man it sold over 7 million copies as the Insomniac leak showed lol Sure these are not Spider-Man/GoW/Horizon/Uncharted numbers but for a new IP 7-8 million is solid, and pretty impressive considering it's in the zombie genre which is very tired at this point. I can't say why Sony haven't greenlit a sequel but I highly doubt it has to do with the sales figures.
It only got to this number because of the sales and ps plus, unfortunately, which is really not the same amount of money compared to 7 mil copies sold at full price
@@АндрейКолмыков-ш2фI doubt horizon sold 20 million full price copies same with the last of us. The only one that’s believable in full price figures would be spider man. I’m sure it still sold at least half the amount akin to 4-5 million. Also I believe those figures were from either 21 or 22. Regardless no matter how much I argue it’s not gonna change the disinterest from the company which is really unfortunate. I just don’t understand why they are making a movie then.

Days Gone was good on PS5. Deacon St John was a very good character. The emotional side of the game was great. Soundtrack was so fitting to the theme of the game. Underrated, I was late to this one until the PS5 came out and I really enjoyed it. PS4 version had issues apparently, but PS5 was solid. 8/10 for me.
I love how a few of the devs that have "moved" on with other projects outside of Sony/Playstation seem to be sometimes extremely salty about their past glory days. They have had years to come up with new ideas and games to prove to Sony they made a mistake... and none of them have done anything to show off.
This game had a white dude with a wife. It was instantly disliked by the mainstream gaming activists. Even remember Lucy o brian (IGN activist) hating when his wife says during their wedding vows "Ride me as often as you ride your bike" That really got under her skin 🤣
Yea I remember the weird review cycle for this game. "Oh it's just another generic white guy" lol, like bruh, Deacon is actually a pretty cool character.
@@SolidSnake240 That mentality is actually pretty F-ing racist though. Try to say that about any other race and you would get burned alive. Even if Deacon was generic so what? Most people in the US are generic white men and women. Sometimes we need more average protagonists anyway for more relatibility. Like Ethan in RE7 and RE8.
Picked up days gone At a garage sale for $10. I didn't realize it was set in Oregon but since I live there I thought it was cool. Really disappointed there isn't going to be a sequel.
My argument to saying the 8 million figure doesn’t matter is that you still have prime those ppl who came around for the sequel by putting it in their hands
Go read Eurogamer's Days Gone review. It's still up and the critic is very clear that they dislike the game because of the protagonist's race, gender, and sexuality.
I think all the game critics just excessively and unfairly dogged on this game at launch and sorta caused everyone to just echo those opinions without really giving the game a fair shot. It took a few years for people to realize the game isn't trash like people were saying it was and finally start giving it the love it deserved. That was probably a large proponent as to why Sony doesn't really like to affiliate with the game given their pitch perfect track record of games over the years.
Frankly it was known, at the time, that Sony had switched to only wanting 10 out of 10 games. They stopped caring about smaller titles that wouldn't necessarily bring them prestige.
While the horde system does get introduced later in the game like you said Luke, technically you can start taking on hordes right from the get go if you’re up to the challenge. There’s like around close to 10 of them in the first area of the game where you start.
Days gone is the only PlayStation exclusive I asked for a refund, it crashed 3 times in the first hour, the 3rd crash was a hard reset of my console, i feel like people are forgetting how abysmal the games performance was at launch, I was thinking this game was gonna brick my console.
Yeah, it was pretty broken at launch. I remember the first few areas running decently, but the third area was completely broken and that’s when I put the game on ice. Animations weren’t working, levels weren’t loading, massive fps drops and crashing were just a few of the issues.
I do understand that more people played the game when it was free....when it came out in ps plus.. i did too ..but...if they ever decide to do the sequel ...you can be damn sure I am buying that.
Days gone is one of my favourite games of all time, and I'm 44 years old - I've played a lot of games. I bought it on PS5 (when I had one) for £34.99 and then again on Steam for £39.99
I’d love for them to take the Days Gone formula and apply it to another post-apocalyptic type game, similar theme to Mad Max / Fallout or a new spin on a P-A game
Out of all the Sony template games that mostly all play the same, (third person, open world action stealth game) Days Gone deserves so much better. As great as the first one was, I honestly think a sequel could be improved by a lot.
Days Gone and Dishonored 1/2 are the only single player games that I've spent time playing after I completed the main story just because the gameplay was so fun.
I didn't own a Playstation until very recently and love zombie games. So, unfortunately, I had to wait until it dropped on Steam, and they just so happen to be running a sale for it. I think exclusivity can really make or break a game depending on hype, marketing, or even being a well-known I.P.
Days Gone, not havin’ a sequel is plum absurd, strange, and somethin’ that’s beyond my reckonin’! It’s downright confoundin’! With all due respect, everythin’ points to it havin’ good sales and a tidy profit. I just can’t fathom it-it’s a real head-scratcher!

Days Gone is a masterpiece. One of the absolute best games I have ever played, and I've been gaming for 3 decades.
I guess 7.32 million copies sold isn’t a lot then 🤣
@@falconclaw1253 watch the full video pal
Huge difference between 7 million sales at full price and 7 million sales on ps+ and on sale. Do you know which one it was?
@@TheCephalonexactly lmao. I’m very sure 7 million people bought spider man 2 at full price not days gone
@@TheCephalon now that you mention it i played it cause its on ps+ extra
They wanted at launch, at full price, to have a Big sale, not aftewards w lower price
Damn that’s insane to I’ve owned every PlayStation except the ps5 now. Gotta say I’m glad they’re games are hitting steam now too
I'm with you here.
He's one of very few who had the honesty to do that.
me too
also the hordes were there throughout the whole game if I remember.
It wasn't like World War Z where they just dump infinite ammo in your path and the hordes never really feel challenging.
the people who underrated Day Gone 2 should be sued for false review which damaged and entire sequel.
Evan if most people bought in sales or whathever, having a large player base in the first game already is a pretty good indication that the sequel would be succesfull.
Days gone was amazing!
To be fair, Days Gone on ps4 was ass. Only when I came on PC, it became a better game.
It sucked
What a shame that there is no hope for a sequel :(
Sad News Really..... The Writing Could Have Been Better But The Gameplay Was Freaking Awesome
Bought it on PlayStation and on steam deck. Love the game
I loved the game. If I had listened to the initial critics I would have passed on it. If a sequel was available I’d buy it day 1.
I play a full run through at least once a year. One of my favorites. And they left a really cool cliffhanger which is a crime to leave it.
Do you really replay those tedious story missions?
Hordes are Accessible at the beginning of the games and there are loot locations that have premade attractors, pipe bombs, mollys & grenades, which make it doable early game.
I loved it and got the platinum
For me Days Gone is like RDR2 with zombies. I loved this game.
Allegedly Days Gone made money but Sony execs don't like it. So while it makes sense to make a sequel the Sony execs don't want to do it. They should just sell the IP.
Because the game wasn't w0ke enough for their tastes, even though it was w0ke enough.
Days gone absolutely 100% deserves a sequel
The first game is so fucking good it’s wild it didn’t get a second one immediately
I played the game for first time on Steam PC. It is one of the best games ever created handsdown.

That's a big stretch

Days gone is a perfect game for zombie genre and the fans of this genre would agree
Some people say it starts slow but then your just looking for a video game dont really want an immersive experience
I thought it was perfect the way it makes you feel the dread and overall how it gradually shows you stuff not just hordes coming at you all the time
I think it is one of the most immersive games in that sense
Days gone and dying light 1 are best games in this genre for the same reason
Days Gone is amazing.
Please give us a sequel!!!!!!
8:32 yes because many people didn’t buy it because big reviewers bombed it because deacon was a buff straight white guy.
Or maybe they didn’t like the game because of the pacing issues and other reasons ? Stop trying to push a culture war just because people disagree with you lol
By the way, review bombing is something users do. Critics don’t do that lol.
Finally got Days Gone recently...looks great to me!
Days Gone is a top 5 game for me and really wish Sony didn’t F up the second one.
8:30 days gone sold 9.1 million copies on ps4 and pc combined
and there is Sony "masterpiece" TLOU2 that sold 10 million copies. One game is praised and another scold by journalist.
@@IgorBozoki1989 Full price or ON sale?
@IgorBozoki1989 TLOU2 and TLOUS is complete and utter dog sh*t and a big F* you to TLOU
Also how the hell do you know you love a game until you play it? That's the biggest problem with these companies making decisions based off initial sales. They either gloss over hidden gems or steamroll out sequels to good games that fall flat.
Great game. Almost done with my first play thru.
It was a fun game to play during the lockdown ngl. I was surprised it never got a sequel 😕
Until now I still play Days Gone to reminisce 😢
Never played this one but i have a feeling its in a similar boat Mad Max is. Amazing game totally overlooked by most people.
I like mad max broke my heart that we won’t get a part 2 cause if shadow of Mordor sequel could do some improve mad max sequel would of been perfect the combat would of been flawless
I finished Mad Max If you like that game I think you’ll like Days Gone
Just finished it for the 3rd time a couple of months ago. Sunk another 82 hours into it. Its a great game! Loved it.
days gone was my first ps5 game completed
@@Austin-l1j last of us for sure sold that much copies at full price if not very close to it I love Days gone but there were a lot of problems with it a launch
How many of those sales were at full price or at discounted prices or from free ps+ copies?
Because Days Gone seque successful could jeopardize Last of Us franchise
I probably would of never played days gone if I didn’t get it on sale for $12, glad It was on sale bc I would of never played it otherwise and now it’s one of my favorite games.
If theres no sequel why not a dlc for an ending thats fitting for it.
They also ignore Delsin Rowe, despite him being in a fantastic game.
Its a great game.
Even remember Lucy o brian (IGN activist) hating when his wife says during their wedding vows "Ride me as often as you ride your bike"
That really got under her skin 🤣
Someone should remind her that she's literally alive today because a heterosexual white guy and his wife once had sex.
Big facts can’t have a straight white dude
Yea I remember the weird review cycle for this game. "Oh it's just another generic white guy" lol, like bruh, Deacon is actually a pretty cool character.
And didn't she also complain that the zombies were too white lol
The way the game ended i assumed there was no need for a sequel. Very underrated game though,i enjoyed it.
I love days gone, we need a sequel
He said if the game got 5 million copies sold then they would make a sequel, even though it sold more than 9 million copies.
It got hate because it was a white male badass protagonist lol literally
Frankly it was known, at the time, that Sony had switched to only wanting 10 out of 10 games. They stopped caring about smaller titles that wouldn't necessarily bring them prestige.
Please no. Don’t have modern Sony ruin another franchise. Just leave it alone. One and done.
Great game, definately deserves a follow up
While the horde system does get introduced later in the game like you said Luke, technically you can start taking on hordes right from the get go if you’re up to the challenge.
Days gone is so straight for current sony

Days gone is one of my favourite games of all time, and I'm 44 years old - I've played a lot of games.
I bought it on PS5 (when I had one) for £34.99 and then again on Steam for £39.99
I’d love for them to take the Days Gone formula and apply it to another post-apocalyptic type game, similar theme to Mad Max / Fallout or a new spin on a P-A game
Out of all the Sony template games that mostly all play the same, (third person, open world action stealth game) Days Gone deserves so much better. As great as the first one was, I honestly think a sequel could be improved by a lot.
If a second game was made and released on PC at launch, it would do 10mil easy. First game sold around 9mil copies
It is a tremendous game. And the soundtrack is great! “Soldier’s Eyes” is one of my favorite songs now.
Loved Days gone. I hope everything gets resolved and they do a 2nd one. The story was really cool.
I would LOVE a sequel, great game
Literally playing it rn - this time on PC. One of the best games of all time IMHO. I'll happily wait it, hopefully, one day we get a sequel.
I’m currently playing it for the first time on easy and haven’t been able to kill my first hoard yet.
I love this game!
The game was great
it's a real shame we may never see anything with days gone because it was a great game😢
I just can’t fathom it-it’s a real head-scratcher!
the best thing about days gone is how after all the feedback how good two could have been.
Sony only seems to care about high review scores. They haven't made a good business decision since the launch of the ps5
Yet the PS5 is selling like crazy.... Weird right?
@@Tuntira I don't think it's selling crazy right now, definitely back when scalpers would buy out an entire stores inventory. This is why I said launch of the ps5, gotta lookout for those context clues
@@max_well2077 The PS5 has been doing better than the PS4 at the same time of release. SO even after the scalper situation it was still selling like crazy. This is from data as of 2 days ago.
Please note that while I do not agree with everything that Sony has done in this gen, one has to admit that they have been quite on the money for the most part of their decisions thus far. That could change, but for now, one can imagine that the decision makers are being treated (or treating themselves) to healthy bonuses.
When Days Gone launched, it felt like another Zombie game. Plus it has too much bugs. Have a nice day.
