Meanwhile in the UK there was a war on and fabric was rationed as were stockings. Even postwar for years women couldn’t get a traditional wedding dress. She was decadent to the ultimate extreme.

It is nice being finished with Jada. Worthy was a study in human behavior, the dysfunctional edition. I just finished Will Smith's book to get more insight into the family. Jada and Will are well suited for each other.
Andrew Lownie's book Traitor while still about dysfunctional behaviour is easier to read as it is more complete and feels more honest.
Your reviews are terrific. The best kind of book club with the right amount of snark, where necessary.

" A $1,500,000 breach of promise suit; brought by Mrs. Rhoda Tanner Doubleday, divorced wife of Felix Doubleday (adopted son of late publisher Frank Nelson Doubleday); against Harold Fowler McCormick, International Harvester Chairman; in Chicago. Reported settlement: $100,000."

Two things: First, "Tommy" Lascelles was Private Secretary to King George VI, not Winston Churchill. The Prime Minister had a team of 4 private secretaries, the principal (who dealt with things like the Windsors) being Jock Colville.
Second, Edward was put into the Bahamas partly to get him our of Europe but also because Churchill (who had been a friend) thought it would be a place where he could "learn the ropes" and they could see if in the future it would be possible to find him a job. However, he made a lousy job as Governor of the Bahamas and showed just how unsuited he was to any role which required diplomacy, tact or discretion - and he had an aversion to hard work. In any case, the UK appoints professionals from its Foreign Office as ambassadors.
Inappropriate friendships: Edward's ability to fall for a "wrong un" has been inherited in full measure by two of the modern princes.
Signed postcards: No, today's royal family give photographs of themselves, signed, in solid silver frames and they are VERY saleable.
Attempts to silence the media - doesn't that remind you of someone? And Edward's anti-semitism was notorious, and his pro-nazi sympathies continued right to the end of his life, he was completely unrepentant about his support to the extent of giving a Nazi salute in a New York night club in the1960s.

Wallis and the Duchess of Narcissism have a lot in common, especially buying expensive clothes and jewelry. I’m sure Wallis would also have appeared at a school, populated by the poorest children, wearing thousands of dollars in clothes and jewels. They both probably think the kids should feel blessed for being in their presence and seeing their wealth.

There had to be clarity over the King's role which could not be infringed upon by any ex-king lurking in the vicinity. It was interpreted by David (like Harry v-a-v William) as status jealousy, but any change of role entails setting boundaries. Or there's Trouble down the line.

On the matter of. autographed pictures : Many years ago in Manhattan NY I was invited to a dinner along with about eight other people. Our host had three exhusbands, one of whom was a German aristocrat.
After a pleasant evening, our host made it apparent it was time for us to go, then handed each of us a large envelope. Imagine our dismay to find a flattering black and white portrait of our host with her signature listing her surnames by exhusbands.
We were amazed, but merely thanked her for a pleasant evening.

    Sue for marriage:
If a marriage has been promised then failing to enter that contract is a Breach of Promise.
(This was more of a thing before the 1970s, when a nubile woman's expectation of value was her marriagability / fertility rather than employability.)
Also, an engagement ring is Consideration in expectation of the marraige contract, so if the marrigae is not contracted then technically the ring should be returned to the other Party.
    [UK law, probably US too]

    • @ryohoshi8445
      @ryohoshi8445 8 месяцев назад

It was also a case of it being a Problem for a woman at the time if she slept with her fiance and he bounced on her. Once it wasn't really going to be a problem... (It still exists in some states in the US, but nobody's actually going to bother.)
As for the ring: Returning it in US law/tradition at least depends on who broke the engagement--specifically, the person who got left gets it. (So he doesn't get the ring back if he breaks the engagement.)

1 Clothes shopping: Probably in emotional compensation for being stuck with David. We have heard in the past few years she did not want to divorce Ernest Siimpson (aka The Man That Got Away). There is/was a video about her letters to Simpson.
    2. Before the Abdication, she was often at David's Fort Belvoir home. The royals went in and out casually. So, Wallis called the Duchess of York (later QUEEN Elizabeth), The "Duchess of Dowdy." Elizabeth walked in one day, overheard this. Did not go well, did it? Also, Elizabeth hawanted David for herself but she was not his "type." Source: Lady C's biography of the Queen Mother. VERY interesting and enlightening.
    3. Wallis never paying her bills. Trump did/does that one a lot. "I'm so rich I'm an ad for your small company." A LOT of well off people do this. Remember also that Wallis expected to grow up wealthy but her uncle did not leave her money as expected, so she was always on the hunt for a rich guy or a freebie.
