There had to be clarity over the King's role which could not be infringed upon by any ex-king lurking in the vicinity. It was interpreted by David (like Harry v-a-v William) as status jealousy, but any change of role entails setting boundaries. Or there's Trouble down the line.

On the matter of. autographed pictures : Many years ago in Manhattan NY I was invited to a dinner along with about eight other people. Our host had three exhusbands, one of whom was a German aristocrat. After a pleasant evening, our host made it apparent it was time for us to go, then handed each of us a large envelope. Imagine our dismay to find a flattering black and white portrait of our host with her signature listing her surnames by exhusbands. We were amazed, but merely thanked her for a pleasant evening.
