I was never that impressed with her. I was also skeptical of the fairy tale marriage. It was obvious from the beginning that she was basically a brood mare. People have come to realize that the real love story was that of Charles and Camila. She is the love of his life. He loved Diana as a human being and the mother of his children, but youth and beauty didn't changed his love for Camila. I am glad to see them happy at last.

Yes. Along with that Princess Diana made Princess William her emotionally disturbed sounding board calling him at all hours with her emotionally troubled whining while he was away at boarding school (documented)and conversely over indulged and kept Harry infantile which surely contributed to Harry's lack of maturity and accountability.

This is a very simplistic take. We are not all doomed to be clones of our parents, even though some traits are inherited. If we’re assigning characteristics (blame) where is Charles in the toxic mix then? Harry’s vehement detractors don’t seem to ever want to acknowledge that Charles was an absent father and not a very nice man in his own right. Nor that William is not a paragon who belongs on a pedestal. Both sides in this saga seem incapable of being impartial in even the smallest details. This tendency to lay this all at the feet of a dead woman is misguided and distasteful.

So apparently was Charles. Once he heard about the accident he took her out to lunch and a romantic vacation soon after. It sounds like Charles really did try to make it work with Diana, at least for some of the time, but she was extremely difficult to live with due to her illnesses. You can’t blame her for her mental health issues but you also can’t blame Charles for not understanding why she was being so difficult. It seemed doomed from the start, and then she goes and lies to Morton just out of frustration and spite. It’s not a good look for her, I’m afraid.

Love these deep dives into the stories and myths we all know so well. Diana was a total drama queen, and desperate for attention - I don't wonder that Charles just wouldn't buy into it. By the time Andrew Morton wrote his book - Diana was in full retaliation mode, and she certainly wasn't above twisting things to make her look hard done by, and to get the public on board. Diana, like Meghan, always gave whichever version of a story she thought would best serve her ends. There are far, far more similarities between Diana and Harry's wife than people realise, and not in a good way. Both manipulative, using the paparrazi for their own ends, changing their story, flat-out denial of proven facts, wilful blackening of the name and reputation of anyone in their sights, ostracising those they deem to have crossed them, discarding people no longer of use, love-bombing people - especially staff - to get them on side and improve her image ("my rock" Paul Burrell?) - Harry really has married his mother.

    • @OdeInWessex
      @OdeInWessex 10 месяцев назад +17

Couldn't agree more, however, it's worth also pointing out that Diana had a truly awful childhood that damaged her in quite significant ways and that caused serious mental health issues long before she married Charles. She probably wanted someone to 'rescue' her, something Charles was simply not qualified to do.

One of the biographers that accompanied Charles for a couple of months said that Princes run into Charles's arms as enthusiasticly as they run into Diana's. Photogrsphers just were interested.
That was bc the press was not interested. Threir narrative for the public consumption getting them higher ads revenues was StDiana vs villains Charles and Camilla. Although nobody accused Diana of lying when she admitted on Panorama that she was the first to take lover.

I think Diana's tape recordings to Andrew Morton were done at a time she wanted revenge on Charles and to get it out there in the public domain how deeply unhappy she was at that time. So alot of rewriting of history was involved. All that "lamb to the slaughter" business on her wedding day was false to those of us who witnessed the wedding, honeymoon, her falling pregnant in no time at all, and, as you rightly describe, scenes of their romantic kissing in the sea. No doubt later the marriage fell apart but Diana was an arch manipulator herself, and was happy to chase after married men on several occasions. In the case of Will Carling, then discard him when his marriage fell apart. Charles, to his credit, since that unflattering Dimbleby interview where he admitted adultery, has never said a bad word against Diana, or revealed to Dimbleby she had a list of affairs first. She barely wanted to admit to Hewitt on Panorama but Bashir insisted. Charles has copped the flak for 30 years, silently. Saying this doesn't mean I didn't love and admire Diana, we all did, and found the Morton revelations hard to believe at the time. It just means now we realise Diana wasn't a Saint herself, inspite of the way she's characterised by US TV, and Morton's book was not wholly accurate, which makes the broadcasting now of 30 year old tapes a rewriting of history being put in the public domain. Shame on Morton for doing so, as if he hasn't made enough cash out of Diana. But in 2023 what does the actual truth matter? You're doing a great job to research and highlight the truth. 🥰

They rearrange the deck chairs--even in retrospect--in a way that erases weakness and casts them in the heroic role. She was also the first one to have affairs. I’m really starting to think that all of the blame Charles has endured for years is really unfounded for the most part. Maybe he was insensitive and maybe even cold but she sounds like she was an absolute nightmare to deal with and people didn’t understand mental health issues in the same way we do now. It takes a particularly cold hearted person to literally throw an elderly lady out of her home with her belongings in rubbish bags just two days after her husband's death.

This is such a sad story. One of an arranged marriage between unsuited people. They were so different - she was young and inexperienced and he was older and been around quite a bit. They had totally different interests. On top of that, while it seems Diana did love Charles, it was not reciprocated in the same way. I have no doubt he cared for her, but she was chosen by their families because she was suitable to be a virgin bride and to provide heirs. The environment in which Charles grows up made him spoilt and selfish to a certain extent. He expected his life to continue as before, whereas Diana wanted the family life she missed as a child. I don’t think we will ever know the extent of their misery; suffice to say they were an ill matched couple. However, two boys were the result of the union, one of which, William, is a credit to his parents and his country.

I never believed that Charles was cruel and uncaring and never loved Diana. I used to live in the UK in 80s and 90s and Royal Reporters who followed C&D in the early days said Charles was besotted and couldn't keep his hands off her. Diana herself told her voice coach that, in the beginning, Charles was like a puppy dog following her around and was all over her like "a bad rash". I think he probably just tired of the drama and the rows and a gulf widened. I can imagine Charles was frustrated by reporters reporting on what Diana wore rather than what Charles was giving speeches on. Does that make him jealous of her? That was Diana's interpretation. I believe she changed the narrative with Morton to gain public sympathy. If Charles was as awful as Diana painted him to be, why did she tell Camilla she still loved him and how could his second marriage be such a success. I recently read Morton's book for the first time, and I couldn't see what started the ill feeling between D&C. Maybe it was her affair with Barry Mannikee. Ken Wharfe's book is also an interesting read....Lady C is very cynical about Diana - Diana wanted to contribute to Lady C's book but Lady C didn't agree to tweak the narrative so Diana went to Morton instead. Lady C said Charles's affair with Camilla didn't start up again until a meeting was set up by friends who were worried about Charles because his marriage had disintegrated. I err on the side of believing her because she is so well connected.

In the last couple of years of her life, Diana reconciled with Charles and they built quite a healthy relationship for an ex-couple. Diana also rebuilt her relationship with the Queen and they were quite close. Diana said that she’d regretted giving those interviews and doing the book… It’s sad the way it all happened. There was a lot of manipulative behaviour, lies, Martin Bashir’s appalling twisting of truth to get her to say so much of what crushed any hope of repairing that marriage, and of course her affairs that humiliated Charles and her children.
Diana’s childhood was awful. Neglected by her parents, her brother (the saintly Charles Spencer) bullied her and even denied her entrance to her childhood home when she asked to stay there once during her marriage. She had an overly-romantic view of marriage and was completely naive about love generally. She thought Charles would save her like in all the romantic novels and films, but of course Charles was a grown man with a broken heart himself after being denied permission to marry Camilla and told he had to get a ‘suitable’ wife. They didn’t really know each other well and it was a bit of a set up, one of the last arranged royal marriages.
Diana was a very troubled soul and was never going to make anyone a happy wife, because she’d never been truly happy and loved, and didn’t know how to be. It’s astonishing that poor Charles, who stayed faithful right up until the point where he found out she had been unfaithful to him with her security guard (and only got back in touch with Camilla then) has been cast as the villain of the piece, unfaithful and cold, while Diana - who had multiple messy affairs leaving devastation in her wake every time - has been cast as the innocent, saintly, hard done by loyal wife. She was certainly not above telling lies, exaggerating for her own benefit or twisting reality into a mangled version.
The marriage was never going to work. It was a car crash. Charles tried his best but had loved Camilla for too long and couldn’t understand the complex young woman who turned his life upside down and left him confused and bitter. Diana tried her best, but had none of the tools to make anyone happy for long. She was drama, pure and simple, and remained that way until the end. It was Diana who called the paparazzi in Paris before the infamous car chase that ended in her death…
Harry is much like his mum, and unfortunately Meghan does have has some of Diana’s worse qualities, but without of course any of her great generosity, warmth or compassion. They are both narcissists and are a match made in hell. Their relationship will implode in the end, once they’ve destroyed everyone and everything else they can. But it will have destroyed forever Harry’s relationship with his family and the country. Only a public, abject apology and explanation could help, and he will never do that. Narcissists don’t. He’ll maybe come back one day crawling round the edges, but no one in the family can or will fully trust him again. Very sad.
    Just my opinions

I love hearing about how Charles and Diana got along better after their divorce. I especially love hearing about what Diana’s friend Simmone Simmons had to say about it. She said that when Laurens Van Der Post (Charles’ adviser and William’s godfather passed away), that she “offered her sympathy, he responded in kind, and they started calling each other. He then started popping around to Kensington Palace for a cup of tea and a chat” (Tina Brown has also said that they chatted over tea).
I also love hearing about how Diana rebuilt her relationship with the Queen too. This morning I read an article that talked about how “Diana was the problem and not Fergie”, and how “the Queen was afraid of Diana”. They were talking about the early 90s so those things may have been true then, but I love to hear that things got better later on. In the same page that she talked about Charles and Diana “calling each other after the divorce”. I think that in the last 8 months of her life, the relationship between Diana and Charles was better than the one between Harry and Meghan right now. Simmone Simmons also said that “The Queen invited Diana to Christmas in 1996”. Diana didn’t accept the invation, but it says a lot that she was invited, especially when Fergie wasn’t and she was closer to the Queen than Diana was (though there was the whole Prince Phillip thing).
I love how you said that Diana had some of Meghan’s worst qualities but none of her “great genoristy, kindness, warmth, and compassion”. I’ve been thinking, “if Meghan’s so like Diana where’s the part she offers sympathy to one of the royal family members that she was feuding with (reconciliation with William and Kate). Where’s the reconciliation without expecting the royal family members to apologize. Where’s the part where she lets her youngest child spend time with their royal family members. Where’s the part where, after the fighting, Meghan attempts to spend time with the royals at an event that isn’t a funeral. I know that all this might not be possible for Meghan to do, but Diana did do all these things. If Meghan really wants to follow in Diana’s footsteps, then maybe she should try doing one of these things as well. Meghan read the “Diana book” but stopped before the final chapter.

@@uniquelyautisticlyemma1789 absolutely :) I actually don’t think she did read the Diana book (not in a sense of trying to understand the woman herself) - but if she did, she cherry picked enormously. If she read that book at all, i think it was as part of a deliberate attempt to ‘learn’ Diana as a character in her own drama, because she was the most talked about woman in the world before her death, and the one thing MM has always wanted is fame and to be talked about. Plus I think she thought acting like Diana would help her snag a rich British guy. As many have said, since the year before she met Harry, this has been her biggest acting role ever. Her own life wasn’t panning out the way she wanted - she had failed relationships, no house of her own, and was now being written out of Suits. It was all failing, so she did a major rebranding of herself as the modern day Saint Diana, upping her PR spending…hence the trip to Africa and other ‘charity’ works to rewrite her CV. I don’t think she ever really thought she’d snag Harry, but when she made the connections and could get close to him, I think she threw her all at it. I’m betting she’d studied Harry too - down to the last sordid detail. She knew exactly what bitter little buttons to press to get him under her spell, and she also knew he wasn’t the brightest. So once he was snagged, she got him to sing like a canary (betting she recorded everything) and probably egged him on to say all sorts of real and imagined stuff about his family and how mean they were and how William got all the breaks and how unfair everyone was. Imagine the bitter BS that fell out of that man’s mouth when he had a willing and captivated listener in his bed… We’ve seen his interviews and the lies he smoothly tells as he rewrites his own history are astounding.
I suspect she blackmailed him as I think she did the whole family. Threats to reveal secrets, to spread lies, to accuse the family of r*c*sm… i bet they’d never experienced such a cold, calculated individual ever before. Even Wallis had some decent qualities. It must have been so horrific for the late Queen and PP to realise what they’d let into their midst and what she was doing.
Unfortunately she’s not a very good actress, so we get glimpses of the mask slips, the contempt, the arrogance and the selfishness that are (I think) MM’s true character. She doesn’t seem to have any real empathy, kindness, warmth or generosity. Diana, for all her faults, has those things in part because she had such an unhappy childhood. MM had a very happy childhood, and she has zero understanding of those things because at heart she is just a narc, pure and simple. It’s all about her. Other people are merely window dressing in her biopic.
MM naturally has Diana’s worst qualities and then merely acts out her best qualities. That’s my belief. And the combination is disturbing. It’s almost dystopian. You can feel it. I think that’s why none of her multiple attempts at rebranding haven’t helped. People can just sense that there’s something off very about her. And let’s fact it, her actions do not line up at all with her flowery speeches about compassion, family and empowering women.
Imho, of course. I wish I was wrong about her, and Harry too. But I don’t think I am. Sad.

Whenever relationships are discussed I always think of Bruce Springsteen saying that his mom and dad were just two people trying to get along in the world but it took him many years to see this. When I see how Diana and Charles acted, I have pity for both of them because they were two people trying to figure out their lives and expected to get it right from the get-go in full view of the world.

When I imagined the Di down the stairs scenario, I always pictured Scarlet in Gone With the Wind. Tres Dramatique! And the substitution of the Queen Mum, who really disliked Di, from the Queen, seemed very manipulative. People trip, things happen. But to do it with intent, I don’t believe that would have ever been an option. And in 1995, Diana wanted out, thus just added salt to the wound.

This was fascinating - I didn't know any of this! But - with true evidence (the tapes) - I can see why many now refer to Diana as a master of manipulation of the press in the 90's when it suited her needs. I see her in a very different light.

Postpartum depression is a serious condition that Lady Diana suffered from, including anxiety and suicidal thoughts. She married too young, and became pregnant too soon, hardly knew Prince Charles and felt lost in a Royal Family environment. Everything was done seemingly in a hurry to see Charles finally married and become a father. As we know today, all went wrong. In the meantime, MM read everything about Diana and as usual she has no original thoughts: she decided to copy paste Diana exactly with the same symptoms but not the stairs in case "these were successful" ... if you know what I mean. She is a liar and on that note, she disrespected Diana big time. *Look forward to your input Shauna* 😊 Greetings from Cairns 🐟🌴🥭🦘

A crush as a young girls. A family looking for the best situation for himself and the RF were looking for a woman with no past, to make headlines. Diana really was given away by her father, to have one child that would give Father Spencer, the status he was seeking.

In those days ppl married around 18. I think Diana was in love with being in love. I do believe Charles and Camilla had a son and because she was Catholic abortion was ruled out. Camilla went missing in action and Charles was plonked on a ship. They never fell out of love imo and tbh I'm not shocked about the birth. I don't think the truth will come out in our lifetime though 🤔

I appreciate your perspective. Though the years i have developed the opinion that no one will truly know the whole story of the RF, there is the public persona and the private reality with plenty of gaslighting on both sides of any given topic, at least that is my personal opinion. I can say that there is not enough tea in China to entice me to desire to be a member of The Firm, the infidelity, stress, press criticism to mention just a few issues would be at best daunting living in a fish bowl. I've been a royal watcher for decades, enjoyed the entertainment, however at this point in time i have grown weary with it all. Just my disappointment and opinion of it all. Thank you for your post! Cheers!

I think you may be overlooking one point. It is that her memory was very likely affected by her violent changes of emotion. I am sure she lied at times but I have been close to people with personality disorders (and she was borderline) who falsely accuse others when they are triggered, and I think they honestly believe what they are saying. Then they go back to what passes for normal and history reverts back to the original version.
Diana once said you should keep your enemy guessing. I think this was her way of explaining to herself why even she couldn’t control what she was going to do next. And also to portray it as a strength not a weakness. I thank God every day that I have a reasonably stable sense of reality. I couldn’t stand the stress, especially being in public life. And I think neither could she.

Hiya ~ Thanks for this one and the bedtime gossip video. Love both.
I remember reading the Morton book, the day it was released here (in the States) and the stair story was horrible. I remember thinking, Diana & Charles, needed to be in counseling, with the right counselor. I couldn’t envision a pregnant woman doing that. You mentioned it was 3 steps, is that correct across the board? I thought it was a huge staircase, like in Buckingham Palace. I think Charles wasn’t emotionally mature in those days.
It seems like a couple lifetimes ago. I’d had pictures of him on my bedroom walls, as a teenager. But I felt really let down about their relationship. It took a few years before I was able to watch him do anything. I was glad when he married Camilla.

Like Meghan, Diana’s narcissistic traits also led to a lie about self harm meant to get sympathy and make her “enemies” look like horrible, cruel, people who could care less about her or the results of their mistreatment. But UNLIKE Meghan, though indefensibly delayed, Diana does seem to have eventually realized how selfish, unacceptable, and wrong it would have looked for her to throw such a tantrum in order to get what she wanted that she’d even think about doing something so dangerous while pregnant. While Meghan’s never appeared to have realized how selfish, cruel, irresponsible, and egotistical her claims about seriously considering self-checkout while so far along actually sound to sane people. Not to mention the claim that she’d supposedly made Harry suffer through her telling him exactly how she was planning to do it in graphic detail if he was ever to leave her alone again.

I think it emphasises just how much of the victim narrative that Harry got from Diana and utilises it today. His wife is just a nasty piece of work and she said all that, to have a go at Charles. You can see in various photo's and things of Diana looking wistful and sad, and I have heard from journalists, who say, she posed deliberately like this, then as soon as it was finished, she got up and walked away laughing.
