Thanks for pointing out that Princess Anne wasn’t that popular when she was younger. That’s my recollection too. People didn’t like how no-nonsense she was and how independent. What I think is wonderful is that she has stayed true to herself and people have gradually come to admire her for that…and her hard work. Authenticity wins out!
I remember that also. The tabloid press was very hard on her as a teenager in particular. She was not cute and cuddly for sure. Over the years, people appreciate her no-nonsense presence. It's one of the things she's most loved for, as they know what a hard worker she is, and what a lovely family she raised. Also, they know that she has a dry sense of humor.
My mother was a nursing instructor. She was adamant that her students learn to never talk details around a patient in a coma. She had witnessed several times when doctors were discussing a patients prognosis, and saw tears coming down the patients faces.
My parents attended drinks with HMTQ in Tonga when they lived there in the late 70’s. The British High Commissioner was a good friend so they were invited. Dad was impressed by how the staff closed the event once the Queen left the function. He said it was like shepherding a flock. The walls of the state room were lined with naval staff who would gradually tighten the perimeter until everyone suddenly found themselves on the quay. No talk just gradual herding. ❤️from Australia 🇦🇺.
In recent times, the late Queen used to travel to Sandringham on the regular King's Lynn train. She was also a member of the local Women's Institute and was a regular visitor to their meetings.
There were anecdotes that Charles always switched off unwanted lights to save energy & that QE once replied to someone who said it was too cold to wear another cardigan. Maybe despite being royal, WWII shaped them to be more mindful of any excess. Which must have given Charles a heart attack at M's 1mil pounds clothing bill.
I certainly hope he stands firm against any future begging from those two. I read that Harry wants Charles to pay his court penalties. How true that is is anyone's guess though.
I believe that the war affected the queen, much like it did the rest of the country, of a certain age group. My grandmother was English and she was so very frugal her whole life. And apparently so were her sisters because they were aghast at how much electricity and water my aunt used when she went to visit family in England. She filled the bathtub to the brim and used the heaters full blast. The were still bathing in a couple of inches of water and barely used the heaters. And this was in the 70’s.
Same here and it was a treat having Devonshire tea on the boat. It was interesting but I thought the Queen and Prince Philip's bedrooms looked rather spartan.
HM Queen Camilla is so involved with children and their needs, how wonderful it would be to have an annual Train Tea Party or Christmas on The Royal Train? I love seeing her kindness and affection shining through.
Shauna, thank you for posting that clip of Princess Anne's interview concerning her attempted kidnapping. She is as cool as a cucumber describing the incident, and I suspect that she confused the would-be kidnapper when she refused to be compliant and stood her ground even after watching several people get shot as she silently counted the bullets. I'm not sure I could have stayed as calm in that situation. What a brave woman!
Princess Anne, did quite a lot of 'royal engagements', she just didn't get the same publicity, as the 'waring Wales'. She is and always has been one of the hardest workers, in my opinion. I doubt that if Princess Anne had the same amout of help bringing up her children as Charles and Diana did...

Sadly missing from so many quarters of the media nowadays!☹️ But we thankfully have it from our very dear Shauna! I have this straight from the mouth of his eldest daughter! 😉
knowing how careful P charles was with money, we can only imagine his horror at the wanton spending of megaliar during her year as a royal. several hundred thousand pounds on clothing alone !
We went on Britannia a couple of years ago in Edinburgh. Such a fascinating yacht.😮 I can see why the Royal Family loved it so much. It must have felt very private and homely.
Oh my goodness I was in the hospital in 2018. Due to a doctor's error, I was internally bleeding and put in ICU for two weeks. Every day they went in and did a scope to try to find where I was bleeding. One afternoon I woke up and I could hear everything, still had the tube down my throat and I couldn't move a muscle. To say I was panicking inside as an understatement. It was absolutely the worst experience I have ever been through in my entire life. All I kept thinking was, that if I ever get into a position like that in my life where I'm awake but I can't move a muscle somebody needs to end my life! It was horrendous!!
I'd never seen any of it & have commented that I was shocked that I'd never heard her speak before, but as an American, I suppose that's not uncommon for us.
I love that story about the visiting dignitary from a country where women were not allowed to drive (Saudi Arabia?) and the queen was all polite, demurring niceties until she got behind the wheel of the Land Rover and drove (perhaps intentionally) wild over the countryside. At the end she got out and was just as polite and considerate and the man was shaking.
In 1972, Queen Elizabeth sailed into Singapore on the Britannia for a three-day visit, accompanied by Prince Philip and Princess Anne. In 1989, she flew into Singapore for a three-day visit enroute to Kuala Lumpur to open the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting. Meanwhile, Britannia sailed in separately to take her to KL, and the Queen hosted a banquet on the Royal Yacht for our President and Prime Minister. A friend of mine was one of the many guests and she said it was magnificent.
I also awoke after a surgery and was paralyzed unable to even close my mouth which I knew to be gaping open. It was horrific and lasted way too long until after I was returned to my room. It’s a wonder I could breathe on my own. So enjoying this book, I think you have such a gift for story telling. ❤
It's funny about the royals trying to get free travel. There are so many stories about how rich people want everything free. The story about Philip and the near miss at the airport due to his error makes me angry. Entitlement that endangers others is terrible.
Yes we took no notice of Anne for a long time and obviously we changed after the kidnap attempt, when Anne showed how feisty she was at dangerous moments. Britannia is gone of course, but the royal train could go soon according to July 2024 discussions.
Speaking of secluded favourite places to getaway, did I ever mention my cousin went to the wedding of Charles and Diana... went as in actually invited? She worked in the small 'horsing' village of Lambourn, where I was born and raised till emigrating to Australia in 1974. My fathers family were quite well known, as my grandfather was a jockey, my uncle was a farrier and well with 11 kids in the family, their name was not unheard of lol. Lambourn was the home, for a while of Lester Picket, a famous British Jockey, according to my father he wasnt very nice, but I digress, lol. Anyhoo, my cousin and many of the other staff at a stables in Lambourn got invites as a thank you for keeping their mouths shut about private secret rendezvous and weekend stays of Charles and Diana before the wedding. She obviously didnt make the guest list for the reception nor was she given a +1, but needless to say she was very excited by it all.
My uncle worked in Lambourn before moving on to Newmarket as groom. This was post second world war. Such a small world. He wasn't ever invited to any royal weddings though !
@@rad-guidance7 My cousin was Linda Corbridge (that was her maiden name). I was wrong about her working the stables though. Dad just told me she was like a house maid. My Aunt Betty (Dads sister) ran the Red Lion, before it closed down. Linda was the daughter of another of my dads sisters, Mary. My uncle, the farrier was Brum Cartmell, his wife Sandra, who ran a laundromat was another of my dads sisters. My grandfather was William aka "London" Clayton, also known as bill. The Claytons lived in the village for many decades and were spread far and wide. My dad is Brian Clayton and worked for Jack Wise and was also an apprentice electrician. My grandmother was Alice Clayton. Some of these names might ring a bell for your uncle?
I'm thoroughly enjoying this book, Shauna. Neil Sean was saying this morning that Starmer wants to decommission the royal train. Apparently, it hasn't had any refurbishment since it was last done in the 70s and isn't as glamorous as one might think. I think that it would be really sad to lose yet another royal tradition. I know it broke The Queen's heart when Brittania was decommissioned even though she understood the reasons why. I'm looking forward to the next chapter 😊
Hi Shauna, we arrived in Brisbane yesterday, and I can't get over how lovely and warm it is. Melbourne was absolutely freezing. I'm going to enjoy the next two weeks, sitting in the sun. Thanks for the lovely book review, you do it so well.
Good morning Shauna🤗 Thank you very much for your book reviews; you're very right I'm really enjoying this particular book review because truly I'm burnt out with the dastardly duo, (which is the WHAAAH WHAAAH WHINNY PRINCE and his DUCHASS 's drama). ❤ I loved the older Royals as they carried on regardlessly 😊, I can remember some of these things being reported in the newspapers at the time, being very old has some good points 😅 ❤
The things you've learned and the things you remember may be the chief of them, but there are other good points, I should think, which are too often overlooked.
Hi Shauna When you were reading about P. Charles being tardy. I have always been informed that if the royals are ever delayed - Royals are NEVER late, everyone else is just early! Cheers
Hello Shauna, have just spent a delightful day in gorgeous sunny Brisbane… the place is poor cold 🥶 & shivering southerners from Melbourne & Tasmania escape to, to heal our chilblains! Sadly just a long weekend… but have had you in my ears before retiring to bed… SIP… such a great story!🤩🫶🏽😍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🦘🦘🦘🦘🇦🇺🐨
Princess Anne is the best!! She is so fabulous the way she works so hard and is so loyal to KCIII and was there for her mother. I was very sad to see the decommissioning of the Royal Yacht. The media coverage showed just how much HMTQ was upset at losing this gorgeous home away from home.
Taken off the ship!! Why wasn’t that officer in the asylum? I also think that joking about certain kinds of misfortune is a characteristic of a certain type of British male of a certain age. I believe some never grow out of it.
Men in general are prone to laughing about anything less than the most serious of injuries. People of a certain age have seen a lot worse. And anyone in a position that requires regularly suppressing personal discomfort for the sake of the job is bound to have a skewed relationship to discomfort. Doesn't reflect well, but I don't think it's terribly damning.
@acommentator4452 Half my family sleep-walks. It doesn't lead to that. You do stuff that's within your normal range of things and you're easily redirected; if he had attacked someone while sleep-walking because he had a dream about a monster or something, he would have been easily thrown off and subdued.
Shauna, You must go to Edinburgh to tour the Royal Yacht Britannia. As a fan of the Royal Family and knowing how much the family, particularly Queen Elizabeth cherished it so much, I really nerded out on it. That was a few years ago, but I definitely want to go again as I was with a tour group and had limited time.
When Mark Phillips visited Australia in 1984, Anne couldn't accompany him. Coincidentally, he fathered a little girl in NZ in the same year. I wonder if that had happened if Anne had come with him?
Victoria and Albert had the same Schadenfroh sense of humour. Subtletwaslostothe,, but if a footman caught his finger in the doorwaythey roared with laughter.
.... about Princess Margret freeloading... wasn't that piece of land in Mustique given to her by Lady Glenconner's husband - she didn't buy it.. did she pay for the building of the house? Smart move on his part actually, great for the island's cachet ey?
I watched the link with Princess Anne & Captain Mark. The first thing that kind of shocked me was that I'd never really heard her speak before. As I'm American, that's not all that unusual & I don't know what I thought she'd sound like, but thank you for the link. I enjoyed it.
Really enjoying this book. I did a trip to UK and Europe with my daughter's one in 2010 and the other in 2012,. Both my girls still laugh about using the loo on the Britannia
Just awful when anesthesia isn’t properly monitored. When a patient is entubated, they’re given medication to be “paralyzed” for safety. When the time comes to extubate, medications are titrated off but staff is aware and educate visitors.
I visited Britannia in Edinburgh about twenty years ago. I was amazed at how chintzy and low key the RF quarters were and even HMTQ and PP had separate quarters with small single beds. I had a better bed! But the formal dining area was impressive, as one can imagine. It is worth a visit if you’re in Scotland.
Hi Shauna, Thank you! I love it! Officer Paul Officer…or… Officer Officer 😁 Laurence Olivier’s “Hamlet” is my favorite!! Have you watched the “Crawfie” video on RUclips. Highly recommend! 😁💙💙
❤ Thank you, Shauna. We are experiencing extreme weather conditions in Cape Town and I have had the best lie-in, keeping warm and cosy, listening to you. Very informative. 🇿🇦
Shauna, I love your snippets from the book. I found a copy on eBay and bought it. I cannot wait to read the whole thing. It's a nice change from the toxic duo. I think making fun of people's misfortune is unfortunate, but many adults do not outgrow it. Think Andrew, Harry, and MM. Yes, to reading Royal Service. A Book list would be great so we can read together.
Hearing about how everything bad the RF do is covered up and the way they dont like spending their own money sort of explains harry in a way. He probably thought it was going to carry on like that for him and that is why he is so cross with the media. They would never have reported on him like this while he was still in the family and he probably does genuinely think he is right when saying they shouldnt. His quest for media suppression, in his mind, is to get things back to the way they used to be for him. Also could explain why he is always after freebies and tight with his money. Still cant stand the bloke and dont want him back here in the UK no matter why he is like he is! Love the rest of the Royals tho!
Don’t forget the relatively recent upsurge in non media people establishing podcasts/RUclips channels and commenting on EVERYTHING. There is constant criticism of Meghan and Harry on dozens of podcasts: their fake humanitarianism and blatant merchandising gets well deserved and repeated airing. Meghan cannot hide her self centered delight as she pushes her way rudely through every event. She’s the gift that keeps on giving.
@@brendashelonko2149Yes he wants to shut down everything that calls out his lies. I dont think he gives a monkeys about them reporting on any one else tho. he is too self centered
The media did report on Harry like this when he was still in the family. And they reported negative stories about other family members, I don't know how you think bad things were covered up because I recall, and have Googled, many articles critical of the family for at leat the past 50 years or more.
@@GinaSeay-kn7xr Obviously they have had their fair share of bad press but its what we dont know! I still think harry has done things that would have put others in prison but it has been covered up - just my opinion
Dear Shauna, Love your show and always look forward to your fantastic reviews! A (now) funny story about what one can hear when one is unconscious. Years ago, I was suffering from painful bowel obstructions and was prescribed many medications to try to alleviate the condition. During the Christmas holidays, while my family was staying with us, I was struck suddenly with a bout of pain so severe, I must have fainted and fell between my bed and the wall, bashing my ribs on the hardwood floor. Unfortunately, I was unable to move, speak or open my eyes. My family discovered me some time later and hurriedly called 911. Some time later, 3 EMT’s came crashing into the room and tried to pull me from under the bed by my legs. I couldn’t speak but trying to groan out to stop hurting me. My family says I only emitted groans but never opened my eyes. In agony, I heard them questioning my husband and family in loud voices, proclaiming that I had obviously overdosed on illegal drugs!! Stammering and stuttering, my husband (never good in a medical emergency at the best of time), finally blurted out “I don’t know-she takes LOTS of drugs!” To my horror, the young EMT, began slapping my face and beating my breastbone, thinking he was saving my life. When I finally arrived at the hospital via ambulance, the poor doctor met them, trying to stop them to no avail. Once they had dumped me on the hospital ED bed, the doctor rushed to get a drip of morphine going, apologizing profusely, realizing from reading my chart, that it was a bowel obstruction, not a drug overdose!! Imagine the thrashing my husband got when I recovered and got home. He was horrified that I had heard the whole event and was embarrassed that he hadn’t stopped the emergency workers from slapping and beating on me!!
It's so good to hear of the happy times that the then Prince Charles & Di actually shared in their marriage. So much has been made of the divorce and rumors about their both having affairs, Charles' supposed temper tantrums, & Di's eating disorder & her mental state. It's a shame so much of their personal life became public before & during the divorce - esp. in how it affected both Prince William & esp. Harry. IMHO, divorce matters should only be between the 2 people divorcing and their attorneys esp. when there are children involved unless there is actual abuse - not spread across the newspapers.
Good morning Shauna! I enjoyed this episode, thanks…it was a wild ride😂😂. I also finished my binge of the Housekeeper book, loved the way you bring the books to life! Thanks again!

And anyone in a position that requires regularly suppressing personal discomfort for the sake of the job is bound to have a skewed relationship to discomfort. Doesn't reflect well, but I don't think it's terribly damning.
Also how had the officer not been arrested??
@@fibanocci314 had he been sleep-walking, perhaps ? sounds remiss to keep him on
@acommentator4452
Half my family sleep-walks. It doesn't lead to that. You do stuff that's within your normal range of things and you're easily redirected; if he had attacked someone while sleep-walking because he had a dream about a monster or something, he would have been easily thrown off and subdued.
Forget royalty because for me Michael Parkinsons best ever interview is, and always will be, with Emu (and Rod Hull of course) 😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂
Shauna, You must go to Edinburgh to tour the Royal Yacht Britannia. As a fan of the Royal Family and knowing how much the family, particularly Queen Elizabeth cherished it so much, I really nerded out on it. That was a few years ago, but I definitely want to go again as I was with a tour group and had limited time.
There’s a very good book from a neuro lady who experienced a stroke and was in that awake but asleep state. My Stroke of Insight. A great read !
Hey introducing his bodyguard! 'Meet Officer Officer' Sounds like a mad house with the demented bloke too!
When Mark Phillips visited Australia in 1984, Anne couldn't accompany him. Coincidentally, he fathered a little girl in NZ in the same year. I wonder if that had happened if Anne had come with him?
The interview link in description was filmed in 1983 with both of them in Australia.
🇬🇧🏴. I just love your telling of this book. It has to be the best book so far covering “the” subject. Your re-telling is just great! 👏❤️❤️xx
Actually, the Chinese seem to think other's discomfort is hilarious.
And Americans do too, if you've ever watched America's Funniest Home Videos you'll see what I mean.
Looking forward to Monday and the next
Chapter. 💕😊🇨🇦
So entertaining, the book and you xx👌 sip🥂
Yay, thank you!
That was a fun read.
Amelda had hundreds of shoes. I remember that.
Really loving the review of this book. Thank you!
You are so welcome!
Royal Yacht Brittania is amazing, cozy and beautiful. It's available to see in Edinburgh ❤ Good luck eith Corgi hunt!
I believe she asked if it came with a house. Not shy.
@@kathybutterfield2760 kinda shocking isn't it...?
I so appreciate a light-hearted story as I'm from the US and am horribly worried right now.
My granddaughter's boyfriend is named P. Sherlock (his genuine name) and he is a policeman.
I love these royal stories ❤
Shauna, the reason Imelda Marcus had a soft spot for Prince Charles was because she was hoping to make him her son-in-law!
😂
This is a fantastic book. Really enjoying the insights into travelling with the Royal Family❤❤❤
❤ Thank you, Shauna. We are experiencing extreme weather conditions in Cape Town and I have had the best lie-in, keeping warm and cosy, listening to you. Very informative.
🇿🇦
Absolutely delightful
Shauna, I love your snippets from the book. I found a copy on eBay and bought it. I cannot wait to read the whole thing. It's a nice change from the toxic duo. I think making fun of people's misfortune is unfortunate, but many adults do not outgrow it. Think Andrew, Harry, and MM. Yes, to reading Royal Service. A Book list would be great so we can read together.
I am really loving this book! Thanks.
Of all the RUclips book shows your show is the best! I am so glad I found you😊
Hi Shauna Ty for the fun review. Have a great weekend, take care 😘💐
Thank you! You too!
Love your videos and yes to Royal Service!❤
Look forward to it.
Thank you shauna .🎉🎉❤❤
That is quite an awakening for me. Royals enjoy other's discomfort. Hmmm.
In Crown, Anne called her family reptiles. I wonder if she did.
I love listening to you read books! So much more fun than all the RUclips downer trash!
Thanks Shauna! ❤
Good morning, Shauna. 😊❤
Good morning Sharon! 💕

Dear Shauna,
Love your show and always look forward to your fantastic reviews!
Good morning, it's dawn's early light in Seattle, state of Washington, Pacific North West Coast of the USA! ❤😊
Morning! X
Good afternoon fm South Africa. 🇿🇦
Loved it Shauna! Can't wait for more to come.
Monday x
Good morning Shauna! I enjoyed this episode, thanks…it was a wild ride😂😂. I also finished my binge of the Housekeeper book, loved the way you bring the books to life! Thanks again!
😊🙌
Hello from the UK 🇬🇧 Shauna. I vote Yes too.
Afternoon from the UK 😊
I visited Royal Yacht Brittania recently, and can't wait to hear it come alive in your voice while looking at my photos 🩷 I love boats, and it was very easy to see why Her Majesty loved it so much.
Hi Shauna yes to Royal Service - please 😊
Got it!
I’m allergic to muscles didn’t know at the time, had a plate in the South of France and spent the night throwing up in this beautiful bathroom, we were there on business so the hotel was paid by the Company, thank goodness!
Good evening Shauna, hope it’s at least warm where you are? 🙏🙏👵🇦🇺🥶🥶🥶
Absolutely loving this book thanks Shauna 😍
Hi Shauna, is it chilly there. We are hot and humid in the UK.
I'm in Brisbane today and it was beautiful, sunny 25°c, and it's winter here.
14 C so not that cold tonight!
I'm in uk not humid in West Yorkshire but still sunny I wish it would warm up a bit more lol 😂
Cloudy in Bournemouth at the mo. @@isabelwright8910

I love traveling by train. My dream vacation would be traveling from Paris to Istanbul on The Orient Express. ❤️
Love the Book!!
That was a lot of fun❗️🥰
Adore this review, Shauna
