Thanks for the lessons. You use Aspect aka exposure. North versus South vegetation.

Aiming off is my favourite technique to use ..

Great short video, I do have view ranger and its always good just to use to double check your location after using the map just to confirm where you are.

I used the 5 Ds, last one being dangers both physical and navigational. It helped me to think about physical dangers so I could manage the group be it loose rock, steep ground, cliff edges etc. It’s tempting on assessment to be so focussed on the nav you forget to manage the group. With Navigation dangers it makes me look for things that could trip me up eg contouring where there is a tendency to lose height as you traverse, or in forested areas for example there may be multiple paths that are not all on the map Md by not checking compass it’s easy to follow the wrong path.

Great Stuff! Good reminders. Thanks for the Vid! Slope Aspect & Transit lines are what I need to work on. Bit of homework for me and to be used when I'm next out.

My fav: Altimeter and all kinds of combinations of Alti+handrail/slope aspect/etc. Thanks for great content and mega channel from a Swedish ML/MCI equivalent in training 🙂

Being a pilot, my only caveat (and I’ve no doubt you do this anyway!) is to make sure the altimeter is calibrated to prevailing pressure setting on the day, using a known elevation.

Nice top tips Jez. Aspect of slope.

Another vote for aspect of slope. Liked the way you taught this on my ML training in fog on day 2 by imagining rolling ball down hill. Worked really well that day to pinpoint location and have used since in anger successfully.

Morning Jez.... another vote for aspect of slope? Also would you recommend OS mapping subscription or view ranger? I’ve had OS for A few years but thinking of a change this year.
Thanks again for doing these vids ..... they’ve become my breakfast viewing!

Hey Jez, really loving your recent content on here and I know others are too. I am pretty certain we have met (possibly at Castle Inn a couple of years ago - forgive me if it was some other time as my memory is failing me!) Thought I'd let you know I'm impressed with the evolution of your video style even in the last 3 weeks, the quality is great. Love your ironic 5 minute aim - keep rambling, it's good conversation! What camera are you using for these?

    • @JBMountainSkills
      @JBMountainSkills  4 года назад +1

Hey glad you're enjoying them! Thanks for the kind words.
I wouldn't worry, I'm good with faces but rubbish with names....
The videos are a bit of a mix, they started on an iPhone but the last few have been on my Sony a6500 - quality is much better!

@@JBMountainSkills the sound is good too. I'm impressed with the 6500 and considering getting one. Good luck.

Don't know what it's called but I know it as backstopping - noting features beyond the target which will indicate you've gone too far and need to track back.

Real shame Viewranger sold subscribers out, they should have sold it to someone that could have carried it on.

Aim off cautiously so you don’t go downhill only to go up again on the route.

Steve humm pleasure! If I was paying for one I’d go for view ranger perfectly. Think it’s a better system.
