Alarm bells should have been ringing after getting swept by the Islanders the year before (though I guess recent back-to-back Cup wins meant that it was reasonable at the time to assume that this was just a blip), but nearly getting swept by the 12th-seeded Canadiens (a team that, don't forget, was *nine games below .500* if you count overtime losses going into the play-in round) in the Bubble was the moment it was clear beyond any reasonable doubt that their empire had fallen. That it's taken nearly four years of futility after that embarrassment to finally face reality is a damning indictment of the organization. But at least that day has finally come.

I've been a hurricanes fan my entire life since I was born in Raleigh two years before they won the cup. And this is the first time since that cup run that the canes have actually done something like this. Going out and getting the big fish in free agency shows that Dundon and Waddell want to win a cup. im a relatively new hockey fan, started watching the postseason in 2015 as a casual fan without a country just enjoying fresh eyes on a new sport. i actually developed a hatred for the pens before i even decided who i was a fan of, admittedly easy for me to hate a pittsburgh team as a baltimore resident and ravens fan from their inception. got super invested in wanting them to lose and latched on to the capitals because with no knowledge of hockey history and a basic but burgeoning understanding of the sport and its rules it seemed like the capitals were the team with the best shot to beat them, went to game 2 in 2017 and game 5 in 2018 and those two experiences were some of the best ive ever had at a sporting event. knowing much more about the sport all these years later i know i was a lunatic to become a caps fan in the hopes they could beat the pens, but im invested now and 2018 was a great ride. theres also still a strong hatred for the pens but a side appreciation for them being the team that got me invested in the sport even if it was a desire to see them fail. i wish i couldve seen the crosby ovechkin rivalry play out in full instead of just catching the tail end of it
