- Raw footage of commercial seine fishing for salmon in Crawfish Inlet, Baranof Island, Southeast Alaska. Unbelievable return for the chum salmon fishery.
Footage taken on F/V Lucky Star. August, 2018.
Net rolls varied from 3,500 lbs. - 8,000 lbs. This is incredible fishing!
"The purse seine fleet set a single day chum salmon catch record for the entire state with a haul of over 980,000 chum salmon taken at Crawfish Inlet south of Sitka on Thursday, Aug. 30 according to Northern Southeast Regional Aquaculture Association (NSRAA) manager Steve Reifenstuhl. Seiners took 1.13 million fish in two openings."

What’s he doing with the pole and hitting the water
It's called plunging. When the other end of the net is first brought back to the boat the only gap is under the boat. So they plunge to keep the fish from escaping under the boat.

Roy Scheider said it best ,” your gonna need a bigger boat “.
Next time you order salmon at a restaurant and it comes with a boot mark on its face - it came from this boat.
If you order Chum from a restaurant, your a f**king idiot and you should do a little research before you order Salmon again. The one thing you might order from I high end restaurant would be and caviar / the eggs from this type of salmon. So unless your a plant or a cat/dog then I don't recommend ordering Chum / dog Salmon from any restaurant. Sorry for being so direct but I work in this fishery and to come off as if they ar stepping in the fish on purpose is a very improper statement and these guys are busting there ass. Let alone people don't usually eat the meat of these salmon, mainly the eggs. You want good salmon then order Sockeye (Red) Salmon or King Salmon or Coho (silver) Salmon. Stick to those 3 then you will have a good meal but don't order Chum (dog) Salmon or Humpy's (pink) Salmon. Have a good day!

I'm curious too.....
These are all hatchery fish, raised from eggs in a hatchery and released into the wild. They do not spawn in this area there are no streams here for them. They are raised all for harvest and they are consumed by people. They are called dog salmon because of their sometimes use as sled dog food on the yukon and interior rivers
thanks for making that clear. Like others I was doubtful of taking so many fish.
shaenj And the time they can fish, their openers are limited and were only open after trollers fished. It is a terminal hatchery, if they don't catch them, the fish will die there trying to spawn. There are a lot of sealions in crawfish inlet and west craw but they can't eat them all. :)
The crew member in full orange Grunden's should take note of the rest of the crew working while he stands around (on top of the dogs) and getting out of his rain gear before the deck was cleared. This would have never been acceptable on our boat.... Other than that, great video! Maybe it's time to get a soc?

Awesome job good team work
Waiting for the same reply here... great team indeed
The plunger is shaped to project a loud 'pop' down into the water in order to scare the fish back into the net. Before the half-purse (when the rings come up and are pinned with the hook) there are plenty of places for the fish to escape. The plunger guy tries to prevent that. Some boats even have a guy plunge at the stern before the gear has started to come over the block.
So what is that mechanical device right there called ? The mechanical device that is hydraulically pulling in that purse line?????
Damn that roller is sweet. When I fished, those were pretty new so only a few guys had them. We always had to use the brailler when we had a big set. That would take forever.

What is the purpose of plunging that long pole into the water?
I thimk it's to scare the salmon in to staying down deep to make the net pulling a bit easier ?
It makes noise to keep the fish away from the boat. There's a small gap when you're pulling the net in underneath the boat.
Ok a few questions answered. These fish are all for human consumption. Costco sells them as salmon burgers, the roe or eggs are extremely valuable served as Ikura in sushi restaurants the milt is eaten in Japan also. There a very few negative aspects to this program, the most negative is the concentration of the effort can make a few unpleasant experiences between the boats.the most valuable aspect here is the fact that these are new dollars not value added dollars and the hatchery program is paid for by a cost recovery program derived by a portion of the catch.
Why do I have to use a rod and reel. And where is the survival of the fittest
Thank you. great insight.
It would have made the video more enjoyable to watch if there had been a Narrator to explain what the crew was doing during this catch. Chum are not good for Retail consumption, how are they used for marketing.?Any estimate how many Thousands of Salmon were caught on this one haul.?
There eggs! There eggs are the most sought after out of all the salmon that the eggs is what makes these fish so worth the effort. This year dogs (chum) went for $1.20 a lb and they average about 5-12 pounds. I read somewhere that this was about 60,000 pound set which if it was then each "bag" they filled would be about 10,000 lbs. The reason to fill the bags is because if they tried to bring them all on board at once would roll the boat and or they would come over the rails. Anyways I hope that answered some of your questions.
Seems as if a little engineering could reduce a lot of the product after-catch quality damage shown in this video.
I'm not sure what you are calling "damage". Purse seining is actually very easy on the bodies.
These are dog salmon. The main purpose for these is the Asian row market.
Absolutely nothing is wasted. Not all of it is destined to a cold case near you. And all the resulting by products provide excellent fertilizer for the organic farmers. Nothing is wasted

what tool does he use to hit the water??
It's like a toilet plunger. When he hits the surface it scares the fish from rising and escaping by making a crackling sound under the surface.
They could save a lot of money if they would just pay these boys a million bucks to take care of the silver carp.
For your information, US fisherman is catching silver carps and export them to China. See youtube. Believe me America is smart and very quick to solve a problem. Other option is to allow immigration for 1 million Chinese and settle them in the Midwest, they will fish and devastate The carps in no time But I think such an option is politically inadvisable

with all this type of commercial fishing the "Experts" are still wondering why there is no or little fish left in our oceans
They have quota limit, don't worry about that
These are salmon. They only live about 5 years and then reproduce and die. They constantly monitor the numbers of these fish, and raise eggs in hatcheries then release them into streams. I visit a hatchery every year to check on the young ones that I will be fishing for in the following years at the end of their lives.
I hope the ones on the deck are going to still be ok. ?
What is he doing with this long stick in his hands???
That’s what she said
He was hitting water with it. To get remaining fish in the net. Before they close the net
Looks like a lot of salmon. Is this sustainable?
yes it is, becouse the government set sustainable amounts to fish + the fishing goes on only a few days-weeks each year..
so that a big enough part of the salmon can migrate up the riwers to spawn.
and create a new generation.. remember,, 1 salmon can lay 2000-10.000+ eggs. hehe
Salmon farm : the kind fed with MO and antibiotics, the kind you get in your favorite restaurant.
of course not have you ever heard about fish population increasing anywhere in the world ? i have not
@@vpcha Can't you read ? it's a fish FARM !
Fishes are raised in cages that can be as large as 1 km in diameter. Boat casts its net in the middle of the cage.
Sadly enough this type of fish population increases as much as chicken population increase in a chicken FARM.
Watch how salmons don't fight and die very fast on this video. If you ever saw a WILD salmon fight against being trapped in a net you would see the difference !
Worse : they feed those fish with fish meat and other dry meat powder to which they add antibiotics, anti-fungi and other GMO by throwing whole buckets of them in the water. The stuff which isn't immediately eaten by captive fishes goes out in the open water and wild fish in the surroundings are contaminated by GMOs. This sometimes change their genetics… which in turns changes the species.
That's what's dangerous about those farms.
So what is not environmental friendly is the contamination of wild salmons nearby those farms. Not the fact that fishermen in this video catch too many fish.
Cheers !

I’m sure I bought fish off this exact boat, mushy as fuck from being walked all over. Must be a better way. 😳
mushy as fuck because they are barred up garbage chums.
Mainly just used for there eggs bruh. If you eat Chum then you should understand the best. An as far as texture goes from King & Sockeye and then you go and take a bite out of chum Salmon or humpy. The demand for chum eggs is thee most sought after eggs out off all the salmon than any other salmon. The rest of the fish usually is fertilizer or pet food. So to say that your chum was MORE mushy because of the fisherman "walked all over". I think is was more mushy because just in general all the fish were in spawn phase of there life so they changed colors (from the fish going up a creek into fresh water then some of them come back out of the creek when the tied goes out.). Anyways these guys did a good job of working together and also for catch a telephone pole. Well note to all:
that you could have a side job selling firewood after all the twigs and branches and logs you accumulate throughout the day. An if your skiff man helps you out then chances are your skipper won't be on board with your side job. Those weren't

We just put our net away and the bait shed is on and ready to head out longlining (60k lbs of Halibut & 40k lbs of Black Cod) and then it's time to prepare for a short and we'll needed / wanted vacation. The price of dogs (chum) this year went up to $1.20 lb so that 60,000 lbs set right there, today would had made each deckhand (full crew share of 10%). Would had made you a little over $7,000 each. What is the guy with the pole doing?
looks like bycatch was octopus, flounder/halibut, and other juvenile fish. and the bycatch that went overboard was alive. (unlike earlier comment stating otherwise)
It's hard to minimize bycatch in a narrow inlet. Flounders are tough fish and have a 95% survival rate when thrown back in ocean. Jellyfish are everywhere, all the time. Very annoying I must say.
