Great video but I don't know why people refer to the Pentax 645 as an entry-level camera when it's been used by professionals alike and produces some of the best images I've made and seen on a 645 camera. The higher price tag of other 645 cameras don't make them any more "professional," in my opinion.
I actually fully agree with you!! I think it's just because of the three you mentioned, it's the most cost effective, but I think it can take as good a picture as a Mamiya or Contax as well!
great comparison, but one important difference you didn't verbalise, is the fact that Mamiya was bought out by Phase One, they took on the brand, and this camera morphed into the XF system we see today (2024) so, this means the first, second and third gen digital backs from Phase one, IQ 1,2,3 FIT, as they where designed to be compatible, so you have an advantage over the Pentax, that of being two cameras in one, film AND digital, albeit CCD sensors, as that is what early IQ1& 2 where, so just watch for digital noise, as the CCD's don't like heaps of light, it 'burns' the pixels, so, like early hasselblad H system cameras, use 50/80 iso as much as possible, for sharp noise free images.
A lot of people don't realize but you actually can get different "backs" with the Pentax 645N/645/645NII. They're called inserts You can't change them mid roll, but you can have different inserts pre-loaded with film so whenever one roll is done you can quickly pop in another.
Nice video! Small correction: Steven says the Mamiya has more autofocus lenses available, however for all the lenses he names for the Mamiya, there is a Pentax Autofocussing equivalent available.
It’s so cool to see the differences in the two 645 cameras. The skin tones coming out of these cameras are amazing!!!! So excited for all of the plans you have for the year. Your crushing it Gene! Keep it up!
Contrast. That’s the deciding factor. Might just be the edit styles, but Mamiyah definitely has deeper blacks. Both overall beautiful output from both cameras.
I actually do not agree with this statement. I have owned both the Pentax and the Mamiya, and between the 75mm Pentax and the 80mm Mamiya, the Pentax got better contrast every single time.
Who else can’t stop buying film cameras? 😅
Yes me 👋
Just got started, Mamiya RB67
Well....
Io!

same thought. besides the price, idk what makes Pentax 645n more entry level.
Super useful video! I had one question: which of the two has a brighter viewfinder?
Greaet comparison dudes. Super helpful to see these cameras side by side.
Also, turn up Stephen's mic a little.
Thanks! Haha noted 👍🏻

Killing it Gene!
Thanks man appreciate it!

YUP! Something I should've mentioned, and I've also considered getting another insert or two for wedding days but great point!
Yep. I ordered another insert and box to keep a film mag locked and loaded to put in when I finished the 16 frames :)
The Mamiya too has inserts plus backs.
The inserts can be preloaded in boxes.
Yooo it's Steven!!! this crossover ep is unreal! Reminds of the Hannah Montana + Suite Life crossovers. Gimme more!
GOT YOU. More to come soon 😏
Omg… THE DIOPTERS! THAT’S WHY I KEEP GETTING OUT OF FOCUS PICTURES 😭😭😭
MIND BLOWN, RIGHT?
Would love to know the comparison between these two and the contax!
All very similar but you pay for quality of glass between all of them
Excellent review. Thank You. I like the collaboration.
thanks so much!
The AE-1 does take a diopter. It slips over the eyepiece. Most film cameras take a diopter, either a slip-on or screw-in type.
Super cool to know, had no idea
I got a Pentax 645Nii and it’s awesome! Love the size and the loud sound! 😅
Let's go!

Great point!
Mamiya has a 2.8 300mm Apo

Thanks man! That’s exactly what the goal was, to show them side by side. Glad it was helpful!
앞으로도 모든 영상에 한국어 자막이 있었으면 좋겠어요.
maybe you can do a Film War! your Canon QL17 vs Leica ^_^ New subscriber from the philippines btw!
Hmm I just might have to!
But what's the difference between the various models of both cameras? So between Pentax 645 N - II and between Mamiya 645AFD I - II - III ?
Some of it is the build and functions but generally very similar!
LOVE YOU DUDE!! So excited to make more videos together this year :)
The Mamiya shots looked quite a bit more contrasts in these examples than the Pentax.
That's a great observation. We edited separately so it could also be scanning preference but good point!

That's a solid observation for sure

12:09 😂😂 yeah I’m sitting on about 6 rolls
😂😂😂
Not travel cameras 😂 Studio yes- outdoor assignments for sure.
We've definitely enjoyed traveling with them!
Mamiya is more premium because of the price..really, this is how you measure..?
it's actually got a few more features
With the cost of the Mamiya you can just get two Pentax 645n's and use them as interchangeable backs 😛
hahaha that's true
Diopters save lives.
It's true
