The pics with the red background are some of my favorite photographs I’ve seen this year. I would absolutely buy prints if you had them. I love the color contrast.
Very helpful. I am now in the same path as you were at the time of this video.... shooting digital but wanting to slow down and focus more on what I am doing (plus getting more resolution from my images + the color!). Trying to figure out developing and post processing now.... But just switching to older, manual focus lenses has made a difference to me.
Hey Cam, I thought it would be interesting if you'd make a video about your past, your first steps in the photography and film world, how you learned it all in the beginning, your overall background, anecdotes, etc... :)
At 1:26 it's an EOS 55E/ELAN IIE is a terribly important point: 35mm AF film vs 645 AF film photography. 35mm is a lot less expensive still a lot more versatile. The "only" advantage of 645 is the frame is bigger, 56 x 42 mm vs 36x24mm. So, to shoot 56x42 frames with AF, you pay exorbitantly lot more for the gear: $2000 (Mamiya 645 afd III) vs $50. If you are ok with manual focus 56x42mm or 56x56 or even bigger could be a lot less expensive.
Those shutters sound like the sound samples used in movies. Nice bridge between the’ filmographer’ and photographer . Pretty sure this is a good way to grow in your work , keeping the focus and select what matters most to catch the feeling and character of your own style.
Great video, great vibe and you're so right about Instagram recycling and about the gearheads - it's now getting so bad, the next guy with a beard, a hat, lo-fi hiphop soundtrack talking about his latest most favourite camera every single week is just turning into one big joke.... But here you were comparing the Mamiya with its small F2.8 prime lens and the Pentax with a huge, heavy and slow, medium aperture zoom lens on it. I bought the same Pentax 645N with two huge zoom lenses, sold the zoom lenses immediately and got than my money back for the camera and some more. Went for a tiny & fast 75 F2.8 AF and the manual 35, 55 & 150mm. Compact, very sharp lenses. If you're really "romantic", you can adapt many lenses to the Pentax with a simple adapter, including Hasselblad and crazy Pentacon six mount Russian medium format lenses. That, and the price was one of the reasons I went for Pentax 645. I use digital for work, but I do enjoy to use film in my free time, as a counterweight. I just don't grow a beard and make videos on youtube about it.
Eos 50 is my first camera i own 20 years ago. These day films are so expensive I don’t want to shoot film any more. Film i got for 20hkd before now cost 20usd, 8 times difference. I am interested how the lab box work would be nice if you have a video on that.
Love this. Was looking into the mamiya too. Btw, what's the light you're talking about at the end, I don't see anything more about it and need a small footprint led
It is worth noting that the af mamiya is a more recent camera. The 645N when compared to the most recent non af mamiya 645 makes a lot more sense. A mamiya 645 pro tl has a max shutter of 1000, has more physical controls like the pentax, and is generally more comparable in terms of modernity of the design. Really with the mamiya vs the pentax (with both the pro tl and the af) you've gotta ask yourself if you really are going to interchange the backs as much as you think you are. Another important thing is these mamiya 645 af cameras occasionally run across issues with the shutter getting stuck and are a little less easy to find than the 645n or the 645 pro tl. Also, if you look more in depth into pentax glass you'll find there are lenses that perform well, comparable to offerings from mamiya and contax systems. The decision with all of this stuff comes down to price.
AH I love the Mamiya 645AF. My favorite camera. I totally agree with everything you've said here. It doesn't get a lot of love because film right now is all about romance. But the most functionally practical cameras are Canon EOS film SLRs that work with modern EF lenses and the Mamiya 645AF. Also, so agree with the color is just exactly what I've always been chasing for, and the edits are much more minor compared to digital edits. And yes please fuck with film tones haha! Do be careful with the cameras though, bc my Canon EOS 1N and Mamiya 645AF BOTH stopped working on the same exact shoot day, after only owning them for about half a year (luckily I had a FujiX100F to finish the day). Brought them to a very reputable camera repair place in NYC and they said there was nothing that could be done. I hope your videos don't bring the Mamiya up more in price though haha. Great content!
Hi! Very good videos! I have a question! I found an Mamiya 645 AFD with the 55-110mm are you raccomend this lens? Because i have some uncertainties about this lens. The alternatives is the Mamiya 645 pro tl but its all manual focus Thanks Gianluca
I really enjoyed watching this, thanks. I was thinking about getting a Pentax 645N but now will also look for a Mamiya 645 AFD. I suppose I will end up getting the one that I see a good offer on as I looked on Ebay and there wasn't any Mamyia 645 AFDs.
Nice overview. Saw the 645AF standard setup (80 f2.8, 120 back) available for less than $400 and was tempted. And yes, developing and scanning at home is the only reasonable way to go regardless of format. I suspect that soon you'll be a convert to "scanning" via camera, I mean what the heck, you have an R5 !! I love the handling on the Elan II, although I got a great deal on the Elan 7 and battery grip and out of laziness use that more (the 7 is also more reliable and a little faster maybe than the Elan II). With great lens selection I wouldn't trade them for anything, although am interested in the EOS 3 and maybe ... one of the later EOS 1's.
Howdy! Isn't it interesting that you parted with Fujifilm 50R, which has film simulations and no scanning hassle, yet got back to older 645 film cameras and backs? Would you say Mamiya 645 is more comfortable to shoot with and/or images have more special look to them (with or without editing)? -Regards, Mikhail
Mikhail Kartashov the GFX still isnt film tho. It’s still digital looking. It does have some of the best color rendition for DIGITAL, but still, it’s not film.
There is a lot of videos on youtube comparing Pentax 645 vs Mamiya 645 Pro TL or AFD... Why does nobody compare the Pentax 645 vs Mamiya 645E, which would be an actual head to head? :D The AFD is a very different beast than any of the 645 Pentax models. Anyway, a great video regardless! :D
Yooo duudeeeee I’ve loved your digital work for a few months and I’m so pumped that you’re getting back into film! I’m stoked to see what you create with it👊
@@cammackey ahahaha yeah 1/4 its definitely a stylistic choice, but I actually really like the look of it, its like a dreamy set environment, just the hat wasn't planned for the look ahahaha. Great work as usual! your film photography its impressive!
100% bet you most of the greats that are still alive use AF now.. AF was made for a reason. But def I prefer to shoot in manual mode for everything else to have full control of my exposure.
The Pentax has better quality lenses. Some of the Mamiya lenses are great and some stink. The Pentax has a better quality build and is more reliable. The Pentax is cheaper. If you shoot a significant amount of flash, neither camera are suitable for lack of a reasonable synch speed. (Get a Bronica ETrsi instead.) The interchangeable backs a re important for me, so between the two I'd look at the Mamiya, but I'd buy a Bronica. And, I'm fully invested in a Pentax 67 system where the lenses can be used on the Pentax 645, so that's saying a lot.) This guy sorts his preference by build quality attributed to the sound of a shutter/mirror action - an Idiot.

Subbed. Great breakdown, a super practical guy who wants to cut down on the messing around. I like it!
Cheers mate! Chasing the result... It's all this is about.

man, loved this one. to the point, just the kind of info you need. would love to hear more about the mamiya. thanks!

I paid $1500 for my setup. I’m developing scanning at home. So yes it’s worth it for me. I just picked up an RZ67 Pro II as well for $2k

I WAS THE 10,000 SUBBER.
you're pretty good as this, see you at 100k subs again
thank you - this is exactly what i was looking for! i’m sold!
Watching this camera review 2yrs later and that Pentax would be a steal right now with the portra thrown in 😂
You can use leaf shutter lenses on that Mamiya as well. They are expensive, but you can sync up to the shutter speed.
What sort of light set up do you use for your studio portraits? Really great work!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Phase One, Leaf, Mamiya, and Rollei are one.
L Gm no clue lol
For the limited speed when using flash with the pentax, get a lens with leaf-shutter. Great vid!
Looking forward to the stylistic film shoots Cam. For me, in South Africa, film is really expensive at the moment.
You were ON FIRE in this video :) very inspiring!

Hon Kei Ma coming up! And yes film prices continue to rise up. But so have cheese burgers lol it’s just something we gotta roll with sadly

did you consider getting the Contax 645 as well ? would be great to see another video about your developing/scanning workflow

Still wanting to know the lighting/setup for the red cowgirl shoot what’s a man got to do$

Hi Cam, whats the promist filter u're using to film the video? 1/4 or 1/8? Thank you!
1/4 and regretted it lol. I forgot it was on there. My white hat is distracting so my fault. I’ve grown to like cleaner footage!

3 years later also you : manual focus cause now i m a Leica fan boy ahahah me too brotha eheh nice review!
The M11 is still easier to focus than most film cameras… as well as the MP. The Leica viewfinders are simply clean and beautiful.
You can put the newest digital backs on that Mamiya, which will beat the R5 in every single way. Except autofocus and shooting speed.
Pablo Villegas hmmmm I’ll have to try this out!!
great video! however that pentax lens kind of doomed the results from the beginning, haha
Hahaha I know I know. It was a great lens tho honestly, but yeah sharpness and image wise.. eh
