    They're making good points. Pressuring others into worshipping/behaving in a certain way and looking down on other people who don't quite share your views is not good. I wish they would realise it's pretty much what they do to Christians who are more progressive than they are.

    I kind of wonder why Paul and Morgan don't keep doing content like this. No interest? Worried it will turn off their subscribers?
    It seems more substantial than their constant rebranding (I believe they now plan to do those "stop random college students and ask them questions" videos), which doesn't seem to be doing their channel any favours. 🤷‍♀️

    • @BHaney
      @BHaney  Год назад +19

      I wonder that too. One thought I have is that they think if they talk about red flags/issues within organized religion too much they’ll seem too “progressive” which won’t bode well for their audience since so much of their content is criticizing progressive Christians (especially on Paul’s IG). I’d love to see more videos like this on their channel though. Seems like it would be though-provoking for both them and their audience.

    I might get some flack for this, but I would even go so far as to say that Prosperity Gospel is anti-Christian. All it does is prey on vulnerable people and equates poverty with sin. If the promise of good health and wealth never materialize for you, then well, you're obviously sinning in some way and that's what's preventing God from rewarding you. It's just not true. Jesus took an active role in the lives of the people on the lowest rungs of society. Their reward for following Him was education, wisdom, and spiritual fulfillment, not money. What they're claiming is the antithesis of the Bible's teachings and I just don't know why people believe in it. It isn't God who rewards those preachers, it's their congregation.

But I see growth. I for some reason want to like them? I don't know why. But I feel like they're so sheltered and one day it will click for them....like you can have your core beliefs, but let's remember every person,life and circumstance is different and understanding that is so important.

    I went to a church that slowly turned charismatic. They brought this couple in and the wife was claimed to be a prophet. However, she wasn’t there to predict times and dates, all she did was call certain people demons in the church. She never gave a reason why, and she was untouchable/unquestioned, it was so messed up! Those “demons” (she claimed) still walk with God, but she really messed them up for a long time.

    I agree with their take so far (at point 4). I was raised Charismatic/Pentecostal. My dad is a pastor. But he is not hyper either of those. He is extremely careful that every sermon and teaching is backed by Scripture, much of which he has committed to memory. He cares greatly about sound theology, and does not tolerate much of the unbiblical, and frankly New-Age practices we see in many of these hyper-Charismatic circles.

    I went to a Baptist Bible church, so lots of scripture. Which I liked. But that guilt of not having the time to finish the prayer list was horrible and made me feel worse.
    I went to my in laws church, brought my Bible, didn't open it. Just the pastor talking about whatever he did. I did not like it. One of the mega churches. Then my FIL said they kept asking for more money so he left to another mega church.
    On Wednesday it was more relaxed. And I always wanted to raise my hand and questions stuff but the other folks, old farts, were just content and I felt too scared to speak up.

      It basically means that the church emphasizes supernatural experiences as part of their relationship with God. These are things like speaking in tongues, faith healing, prophecy, miracles, and signs from God. They believe that experiencing these things is evidence that the believer has been baptized in the Holy Spirit.

    It never sits right with me when white evangelicals criticize “overly emotive” worship styles. Because I think this kind of worship in BIPOC communities is definitely tied to systemic racism and generations of not being able to process and validate their pain in a wider church context. I say this as someone who no longer is very religious and strongly agrees that there is lots to critique in the charismatic church. The critique should be based on doctrine though. And I know there are lots of white Pentecostals. The way Morgan was expressing discomfort with the overly emotive worship style and saying you don’t have to cry every time really bothered me. And I think it’s because I see this style of worship in BIPOC churches as being a way for people to emotionally process a lot of the injustice they deal with even if they don’t think that’s a factor. Especially since mental health is still s taboo in lots of BIPOC families and in the wider Christian community.
    Maybe she’s not overcome with emotion because she’s not constantly facing racial violence. She’s not being constantly overwhelmed by injustice. Racial oppression can cause trauma and lots of charismatic worship is similar to stimming or movement to relieves anxiety. I don’t know. This particular critique had always rubbed me the wrong way because I think it ignores why more expressive worship and baptism of the Holy Spirit is more common in some communities. It reminds me of being little and the white congregation being annoyed with us for being too loud. People should worship however they would like but by that same token the overly emotive style of worship is just as valid, especially when you consider why some people might be drawn to it. Of all the issues with the charismatic church I think being loud and intense during worship is the least of them.

    • @BHaney
      @BHaney  Год назад +7

      This is really thought-provoking. When I first heard Morgan make the point I took it as her saying she felt like she wasn’t a good enough Christian/didn’t have enough fire for the Lord if she wasn’t always expressive during worship or prayer not that she was uncomfortable with herself or others being highly emotional. However, I was listening with the context of my own life experience and I can definitely see how calling this a red flag comes off as dismissing the value that being able to express oneself openly and with vulnerability during worship has to people in BIPOC communities. Thanks so much for bringing this up 💛

    • @minisnape
      @minisnape Год назад +4

      @@BHaney Thanks for your response! I definitely understand how people feel pressured to be emotive and how it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. That’s completely valid. @carly6107 Год назад +3

      I also think that it’s important to note that the overly emotive styles of worship in some BIPOC communities, particularly black communities descended primarily from enslaved Africans, is also a result of direct cultural ties to their African ancestors-worship in many parts of West Africa is very loud and joyous and dynamic without the same societal racism present. The importance of loud and emotive worship may be driven for lots of communities by a sense of reclaimed identity, but the practice itself is part of many African cultures.

    • @heysaras

      I disagree. I think PM are describing the heightened emotional manipulation used in charismatic worship to convince worshippers they are having a spiritual experience like repeating a chorus for 10 minutes and the pastor emotionally crying out to god and beseeching him for mercy, etc.
      I was very much subjected to it in numerous mainly white Pentecostal churches. Even people (white) rolling around on the church floor in a Southern one. I think you’re misunderstanding her point.

    Well concerning the elder board. I don't think missionaries are being considered here. Like I'm living in a country where we barely have enough Christians to run a church...

    Sorry, can someone answer why it's bad to eat cheese or ravioli if you have endometriosis? I'm feel kinda scary now, bc I have endometriosis, but never heard of it!

      Dairy doesn’t have a negative effect on everyone who has endometriosis so no need to be scared! When I first got diagnosed my doctor recommended I keep a food journal so I could figure out which foods triggered pain and symptoms for me and in doing that I realized dairy triggered my symptoms horribly so that’s why I avoid it. Dairy is generally considered something to avoid for those who have endo but if you’re not experiencing negative effects from consuming it, then it may not be something you need to cut from your diet 😊

    Thanks for your take; it does seem contrived and it’s curious how Morgan has no qualms about insulting him publicly while he just blankly cowers to it. Aside from being new material,this dynamic seems to be ‘third verse, same as the first’ and I worry for the young folk who watch them regularly and think this is a proper example of not just relationships, but worse an example of a husband leading and a wife submitting. It’s been so sad to see his refusal to lead his family, Morgan needs her husband to do more than just not look effeminate. He must lead his family, that’s his primary vocation and that full encompassing aspect of life in which he honors and brings glory to our Christ. So often people don’t seem to understand that the single best way to help your partner faithfully execute their responsibilities is that you meet yours; a submissive and praying wife will actually be heaping what her husband most needs to do his job right upon him because he can’t run from the Lord as easily. A leading and praying husband will heap upon his wife what she most needs in directing her towards God’s calling upon her. Just as when parents conduct themselves in accordance with God’s design, the children are then most effectively brought up in the fear and admonition of the Lord most consistent with His design. I pray Paul will fall under mentorship and teaching that would bring him to his rightful stream of submission to Christ so he would take on his role as husband, father, and man. Morgan will more than likely not assent appropriately until that happens now that their child is involved now also. We all like to forget that women were handed two curses at the fall and a weak effeminate husband will only magnify the extent and effects of the one we conveniently and intentionally (in my opinion) ignore.
    No king but Christ!

    It’s just so weird to see where they draw the line… they could apply this reasoning to the Christian faith as a whole. Some prophecy is ok, but other prophesies are not? Some scriptures are ok to be included in the service, but not if they push an agenda?
