Next topic: How to deal with F360 file management. It is completely foreign to normal file processing on any kind of computer. I'm a home user and need to figure out how to deal with the new restrictions coming in October.
I'd really like for F360 to give me a way to manage workspaces, delete the ones I don't like, rename and move around in folders I create after the file(s) is/are created. F360 doesn't give me good options there.

I am confused by one feature. When I create a body and move it, my sketch no longer matches where the body is located. Is there an easy way to make sure the sketch follows the new body position?

  • @tomgray971
    @tomgray971 4 года назад +64

1:40 Right click and select Copy - No, dammit, you can't because that option is not there. "Notice how when you paste it opens the Move/Copy dialog" - No, it doesn't. That would just be too easy.
EDIT: You neglected to mention that you are in Edit mode -- note the green check in the top right corner. If this check is not present, you can't copy and paste. For us beginners, it's really important that you tell ALL the steps.

I did not realize how important it was to understand the nature of sketches and it’s relationship to how it reacts like a word document . That was very helpful . Not sure I remember you explain it in any of the beginners videos ,but seems to be a key point newbies need to understand . I am a little reluctant to give advice as I never want you to think all the other training videos were not appreciated . I know these video take a lot of work and it is very difficult to teach something with so many interdependent concepts plus you may have covered it and I was not focused .

    • @ProductDesignOnline

You're exactly right, Dave! It's hard to explain some concepts without telling the student to go learn 5 others first...and then they forget what they were trying to learn :)

Thank you. This video finally allowed me to copy sketches! Here in mid-2022, I think Fusion 360 could've been smarter about it though.
As in when pasting without an active layer, it should be smart enough to bring up a dialog informing the user as such. Then provide option to automatically create a new sketch.
Example: If user uses CTRL+V without an active sketch, then Fusion 360 brings up a dialog with message "An active sketch is required to paste a sketch. Create a new sketch?" The user then should have the options of OK or CANCEL. Would save sooo much confusion around the world!

This is really helpful for newbies I'm sure, and though I've used Fusion a lot I was definitely surprised to see what you can do with pasting sketches after turning off design history. I almost never work with design history off. One of my biggest complaints about Fusion is the inability to link mirrors like you can with component instances/copies. Solidworks allows you to create an "off-hand" mirror which is linked to the original component and updates with any changes to the original. Really wish you could do that with Fusion instead of needing to roll back in time to before you mirrored the part to make changes that update the mirrored version. Copying sketches seems to universally have the same issue.

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  4 года назад +2

Hi, Seth IPG. As former SolidWorks user myself, I feel your frustration. There are lots of quirks that Fusion 360 has that will hopefully have new solutions in future updates. I also rarely work with design history off, because it's so critical to be able to go back and edit things.
Have a happy holidays and a happy new year! Cheers, Kevin :)

Another great video Kevin. Your videos have actually made me want to use Fusion 360, not dread it! While I am still very much a beginner, at least I understand what I am doing now. One video I would love to see is your version of an explanation of G0, G1 and G2 surface continuity. I spent hours trying to figure out why I kept getting G1 errors when using the loft command before ultimately figuring out that it was actually my mutli-line, not a spline that was the issue.

Thanks, that saved a lot of time.
I'm just learning Fusion during the weekends and it seems my brain has a slow leak so, I have to redo some things I know I have already done.
I thought I needed a practical project to help focus, , 'motorise the blinds', just a wheel on a stepper motor to drive a bead chain right?
A sale came up, bought a cheap 3D printer, did a quick sketch on a bit of paper, converted to Fusion, two weekends later I found out the sample filament they give you is not enough to complete the job.
BUT, it took me almost 3 hours to figure out how to do the 'D' shape hole for the shaft as a push fit and two test prints to get it right.
    This clip means two things.
One I can copy parts from project to project saving time.
Two I will be back here to remind me how.
Make that three, my wife's reaction to when I install the project.

Newbie here. Just a few simple projects under my belt. How do you start with a component? When I start designing in F360, my sketch opens in its own sketches folder, not nested under a component. Also, when I copy and move my sketch, the copied sketch doesn't have it's own sketch file under a folder, it stays associated with the original.

how to bind a sketch to a body you are working with. I understand how to get the sketch to be defined on the face of the body plane, but not lock the sketch to the plane that is actively being sketched on. not sure if that makes sense. Thanks for you vids! i have learned a lot.

Thank you.

  • @BoDiddleyHeadHunter

It seems like when I paste new a component, and move it to the side so it is no longer "on top" of the original -- and then try and MOVE an element in the underlying sketch geometry of either component, the new component body SHIFTS BACK to its original position in the same spot as the copied one.
This doesn't happen when I change the size of the sketch geometry, just when I try to move elements. So it still seems like its kind of tied. I saw something online about disabling "capture position" but it looked to be an old version of F360 and I cannot find that same option on the most current version. Any thoughts?

    Thanks for the tutorials.
I have a question about copying a fully defined sketch (ie. constrained and with projections) from one design file to an other. Once you try to introduce the sketch to the second design file sketch, obviously the dimensions are still there but all blue, unconstrained. Now, I thought that logically the sketch was copied all tied together and it was only a matter to link the copied sketch to a known (common) geometry, giving this way an "anchor point" for the copied sketch. But sadly even using the move "point to point" in a fully defined point on the new sketch doesn't anchor the copied sketch and it remains blue... I was doing this to save some time and using the same sketch between different project files. But doesn't seems to work, any suggestion. Thanks

Instead of copying, go to the Data Panel and right-click on a design and select "Insert into Current Design". This will place it in the open/active file. You can break the link if desired, but the entire file/component, including the sketch will be placed there.

If I needed to print three of the same box but as individual parts, would I have to print the design of the box three times; is there a way to put three boxes on one design and hit print just once? • @ProductDesignOnline

Hi, TheGoldenLlama. You can copy your components or bodies in Fusion 360, to make 3 of the same box. Then, when you have the "Export as STL" dialog open you can select the bodies/components, making sure all 3 are selected.
The second option would be to copy and paste in your 3D printers slicing software. I use Cura, which is pretty simple. You can simply use the standard CTRL/CMD + C and CTRL/CMD + P to copy and paste the box until you have 3. Cheers, Kevin :)

    • @ProductDesignOnline

Hi c P. Those types of textures, which I would consider "Complex Patterns," would have to be done in another piece of software and brought into Fusion 360. Fusion 360's parametric nature doesn't do well with things like that because it would have to re-process the pattern any time you make a change that affects it. Okay, thanks for your reply Kevin. I will search for other RUclips Videos on SVG File creation. I use Corel Draw and don't have an issue with creating the graphics portion to the same size as the stamp plate(in Corel Draw), my problem is that when I insert my SVG File into Fusion 360, the scaling is off and my graphic is offset too far and too large to fit the stamp plate. I have looked for scaling controls but haven't found anything that helps yet. Anyway, I am sure that will be covered in the SVG File creation videos. Once achieved I began creating the circles and wxtruding them for my rotary drive unit im copying which is on the table in front of me.

The component I am trying to copy is an extruded sketch, which then gets further shaped by another extruded body from another sketch (using Cut method). I then I think used "make component from body" on finished piece to separate it out on tree and make it possible to save as STL separately. The entire history of making it is basically throughout the Timeline history. Anyway I gave up trying to copy/modify it - just ended up having to rebuild the new version of component by starting from beginning again.... copied the two underlying sketches and modified to new shapes, then extruded and cut them again.
