Coated heads can be used as a soft box for lighting
@@PeterJensen7 not with LED lighting
@@PeterJensen7 yes, that is why.
ive been keeping the drumheads and changing the drums! i feel so dumb
Roe Sham Boe how did u afford that?!?
Holy shit I'm dying. I sincerely hope that you're joking.
I hope that your joking cause thats legit hilarious and expensive
Expensive lmao
hahahaha
THEY MAKE GREAT FRISBEES
patrickguyum someone with the same idea as me
Way too understable...
Nice
One windy day with a bass drum at the park and
Found the dog
I took a 14" head, flipped it upside down, filled it with sand from my kids' sandbox and made a zen garden for my desk at work. Added a hand full of decorative rocks and even put a little desktop water fountain on it.

Zen shit
Nice!
I want to see that!
Huh
Wait, you're supposed to change those?
Oh god...
bruh... really?
That's exact the same question bass players ask about strings.
Wait.....bass players can change strings? WOW.....I might change mine in a few more years. thanks for the info
Maybe you’re not ready to be a drummer
I've used them as airgun targets, but probably the best thing I've used them for is for painting projects. It seems that no matter how hard you try, when you pour paint out of a can, a little drips down the side. Ditto if you're dipping a brush in and wiping the excess off on the lip of the can. I use old heads as giant "coasters" to put under paint cans so that any drips, spills, or smears get contained in the head, not on some old piece of newspaper or drop cloth.
played 25+ years. I have done everything you have shown here. I also used to have all the band members sign them and there were always fans who wanted and appreciated them. rock on.
They make great dinner plates, excellent for holding food(not great for foods that need cutting though, ie steak, etc.). I use a 6" tom head for my cats dry food.
Hans Grueber same 😂 I use an old tenor head I took from my high school
Abby the shot/spauq drum right???
I use them as plates for my in laws.
That way I never have to wash them.
Miguel Moran i had no idea people spelled spock like that
You can use them for rolling joints. The hoop catches the seeds if the pot is low quality
Till you get a little tap the wrong way and it all goes flying...
i removed the head from the metal ring, then used pieces from old shirts and stretched it over the ring and glued it down. then I sewed along the edge and now they're silent drum heads (8 even quieter than practicing on pillows.
Thats an amazing idea lmao. would you be able to do a video on this?
Maybe someday soon :p
Thomas Hope I recorded some video, nothing special. I'll upload soon.
sounds good man :D
Andrew Teller soon.....
Great ideas! I use old heads as dual purpose in my drum cases, especially my soft bags. An old 14" head or two in the snare drum bag serves to protect the snare-side head and the wires, and also provides back-ups in case I break the batter head.In fact, I have old heads as back-ups in all my hard cases and bags.Rock on!
I've used some under pots/planters that have drain holes.
Nice
Any shooters? Old drumheads make great targets and target holders!
I've done this for years. Just draw a target with a sharpie and away you go. They even work as "clay pigeons" if you have a friend toss them like a frisbee into the air and shotgun the shit out of them!!!
Or ask the bass player to hold em while you shoot.Hope for the best
Great idea!

I give the heads to my decapitated friends

Priceless comment

THIS IS SO UNDERRATED 😂
I got a Pearl Export kick to learn myself drums on and it had clear heads. I keep liquid-filled "hydraulic" heads on the studio kick. So one day, a drummer was looking for a harder attack sound than we were getting, and just out of curiosity, I cut a 4 inch circular pad out of the old clear batter-head from the Export, and tacked it to the batter of the good kick in my studio with a little bit of spray adhesive. It actually worked extremely well, and now I'll never buy another Danmar impact pad. It's not huge, but it does save a few bucks every head change, and it sounds clicky without sounding too artificial. I'm gonna try to O-ring one now.....
I used one for a planter catch basin. I use a frosted white one as a keeper tray for small screw and parts when I'm working on project. The bright color really helps to make the small screw and parts stand out.
I used to sign mine and give them to friends and family when I was younger... “that’ll be worth something one day” I would say optimistically.
The band didn’t make it. 😂
This one is my favorite topic, Recycling the used drum heads. I save all my used drum heads. The snare and tom heads get cut
from their rims and used as dampers-- not "O" rings, but I use the entire Mylar head coverage... gives my snare a tight fat sound;
and it gives my toms a deeper sound.
My kick drum batter head (full head, with or without its rim) gets used as an additional ply for a deeper tone and a tighter
attack that sounds almost "trigger-like"... I then glue and tape a PE plastic Tupperware lid onto the ply as an Impact pad for
my 2-way DW plastic kick beaters, thus adding a crispier attack and punch to my kick drum sound.
My kickdrum is a 16" floor-tom converted into a kick drum with a riser made from a cast-aluminum truck utility rack.
I also cut some kick batter heads to use with "O-ring" foam floor mats as my own DIY "EMAD" kick drum muffler system.
And my kick reso heads get reused, sanded, (ported or non-ported), for band logo artwork.
Another thing I like to do, while the batter head (smooth, or clear) is still on my floor-tom, is to use a black dry-erase marker to write
down my song title set list onto the batter head, right before a show. After the show, I wipe the song titles off with some
Isopropyl Alcohol and a soft tissue paper... my "dry-erase board" floor-tom is clean and ready for the next gig.
The effect of the O-rings is very efective i like it!
I use them sometimes as art canvases, on tour I have drawn portraits of famous musicians / people whom have died and then sold them on the merch stall. I sold a che Guevara portrait for $200, usually do an auction too. Also great channel, one of the best drumming channels if not the very best !!
I hung the old drum heads I used on a set of Tenors last year on the wall. Essentially a memory from my Captain Year of Drumline!
I took the old worn head of the drum 4 of the tenors I marched my senior year, and had all my band buddies sign it, and now it's mounted on the wall in my room above my bed
2:00 WOAH! THANK YOU rdavidr, I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THAT EXACT SNARE SOUND! THANK YOU!
I cut some old clear tom heads to use on my snare for different snare sounds, on my toms for deeper sounds, and some cut pieces for my kick. Nothing fancy, just experimenting with different sounds... does me a good job Live on stage, and in studio recordings.
I cut them out in small circles to make a bass drum patch.
That sounds like a good idea. How do you attach it? tape, glue?
The cheap double-sided tape not the foam foam or gel one as you might lose some attack. Rubber cement also works.
You pick:
1) I send them all to Evans and Remo and tell them they need to figure out a way of recycling them to lessen waste.
2) I throw them straight into the Mississippi River.
3) I send them to third world countries for poor kids to use on their drums
4) I throw them at squirrels in the park.
I like 2
Since im in the 3rd world, ill go with 3
+rdavidr Use thm as a frisbee XD
I live in the third world... so.... give me my drum heads
I'm a poor kid from the third world. Should I send you my address?
So I can throw them at ducks on my local park
I separate the heads from the rings, then soak the heads in a solution of bleach and orange peal. Then I put the rings in the oven for 20 minutes 180 degrees and spray them with a solution of pva glue and black paint. When the paint is dry and the heads have been soaking for 48 hrs I put them both in the bin and order some more from eBay
what I've done is cut out a roughly 4 inch circle and tape it on my bass drum head right where the beater strikes. I've found if you just do a single strip of tape across the top to hold it in place but let it be loose enough to have a little air between the circle and the head, it adds a lot of pop into your bass drum sound if you're into that.
This channel is great. This is exactly what I needed. I also love to find DIY ways to do expensive drum things.
I've looked through at least 100 comments and haven't seen this one. You can get a clear head and draw the Batman symbol in black and outline in yellow, then get a lamp and put it under, cover the sides with something like paper (I can't thing of anything else) AND WALLLAHHH YOU HAVE A BAT LAMP!!!!!!!
Jj Zuñiga I’m gonna guess you’d have to look through about 100k comments before you find someone else with that idea😂
thanks for the HEADS up
omg im never throwing another drum head away
they are also really good for mandals or drawing/doodling i love drawing on heads especially non-clear ones
This is one of the most useful drum gear videos on the internet thank u
Loved the bass drum clamp thing and the cool little visuals you make on stuff!
Tip: instead of using cardboard or a square piece of drumhead for the bass pedal clamping onto the bass drum hoop, use an old bmx bicycle inner tube just cut the length of the tube that will fit to the width of the clamp (top & bottom of clamp on bdp) then cut the tube length wise and fold over each side of the hoop. This will protect the hoop from being scratched or dented and will last forever. 😉
Wow Dave! It's just a matter of time before you reach 10,000 subs! I remember when I subbed just a couple months ago and you had 800. Keep doing what you're doing dude and don't stop. Stay awesome Dave!
Some years ago I made a few caxixi's from 1/4 inch wide strips of woven drum head, nice and springy and firm, keeps a good shape and the weave was nice and close so I never lost any filling. And you could see inside too.
Still really love these classic rdavidr's!
I sometimes use my old batters as my resonant on the bottom. gives it a nice sound
I've used old bass drum heads as o-rings for my bass drums (and snares) for years. I cut the lip off and mount them inside the head, rather than outside. That way, there's no pillow, or anything in the head, but it still has a perfect punch. For my 22" in bass drums, I cut a 12" circle from the old head and was left with a 6" ring. I tried different sizes and found the 6" gave the best sound.
Just made O-rings with some old ones last night, and bought some dividers from Harbor Freight for like $7.50, they work great. I love these hacks.
Our marching band director (an old head himself) has all of the heads from when he started to the most recent saved in the band room of our school, stacked on top of each other on a cabinet.
The stack is about two feet thick and ranges from marching bass drums to quads to bongos to half of a practice pad
Here's a good one..they go great under potted plants in my greenhouse.... .different size heads fit different pots..
just did the Fat snare trick and cut up a 2 ply head, using 2 layers makes it sound WAAAY deeper. Also tried it on my floor tom and it sounds awesome for a kind of QOTSA sound. Thanks man!
I have old worn-out heads for practice, and new ones for shows. I took off the bottom heads of my toms so I get the sound I want + spare fresh heads lying around. When the top heads get worn out, I swap in the bottom heads and I essentially have new heads for the price of $0! Or you can think of it as I get two half-sets of heads for half the price of the original full set. Yeah you get more tone with top + bottom heads, but I love the boominess and sound projection for hard rock and metal, so this is a preference thing I guess.
The snare strip and MADPHAT mod are really good ideas, I didn't think of that.
Your videos are SO helpful! Thanks so much!
Extremely crafty video!!! Thanks much!!
Thicker white heads were good to make a few "new" lug, leg and mounting gaskets that were cracked, wrinkled or hopelessly bent. Just trace and cut them out. Small holes are tricky without an arc punch set. Grinding a sharp edge on a short piece of small tubing works, so does drilling the holes with the plastic squeezed between a couple of pieces of scrap wood.... then line up the old gasket with the new holes, trace it and cut it out.
I also discovered some drum heads are "plastic with memory" and sometimes dents and "slack" can be "shrunk out" with a heat gun. Start at a distance and cool, then warmer and closer, watch the plastic, do both sides.
I have a couple old 16" fiberskin heads in decent condition, old but good looking. I'm swapping them out for calfskin on my rope drum, and the fiberskin heads I'll be adding artwork to to hang on my wall of my drum room!
I use then to make patches for bass drum and snare. Cover an area with double stick tape, trace a CD or something and you got a nice factory looking patch.
I use them for art! when I go to an autograph session of an artist I like or when my band opens up a show for a bigger act I have them autograph my heads and hang them on my wall of fame. I had a buddy of mine who happens to be a really good artist draw some unique designs on them as well
i made a few orings but ive also painted a few as well as the Generic no name cymbals that came with kit.
Great ideas to change the sound of my snare, so it seems like I have two or three. Thank you!
The heads on my drums are all hand me down from my dads kit, so by the time I need new ones, there pretty well done for
I used to use them for moon gel covers , stops the stick chippings from coating them in the fine dust
Great old head jobs!
Great videos man a lot of fun and a load of useful tips
Ha! I have the same star classic kit! Nice kit!
also I love the stencil idea! I will try that one!
What do you do with old heads?
I give them to my baby brother, he plays with them a lot
I save all of my heads, and about a month ago when I found your channel I decided to cut up a rack tom head into a o-ring for my snare
+rdavidr Frisbee !!!!
+rdavidr A trick that I found out about through Instagram is you can use an old head if you run through the batter head of your bass drum during a gig (helpful when you're forced to use a house kit that doesn't have a reinforcement patch on the batter head). Just toss it over the gash, and you're good to go.
+rdavidr I use my old beater-side kick heads to make decorative resonant kick heads. I usually have a pretty big hole in them anyway, so tone isn't too important.
I like to modpodge some wrapping paper to the inside of the old head and get a crazy pattern for the front of my kick.
I've personally been saving my old heads (they're all busted) to use for some sort of decorative piece down the road. Same with broken drums sticks and cracked cymbals.
They're great for writing the list of uses for your videos.
The stencil idea is so obvious but I never thought of it. haha thanks for the video dude!
I’ve been saving them for if I buy a kit to flip that has crappier heads
cool video man! thanks for the creative ideas!
Man, I have such a pile of used heads I'm never going to touch again, I just throw them out. If they're not good enough for me to use on my kit, they're not good enough for anyone else either. I already have more muffling rings than I'll ever use, so I'm not going to bother cutting them out of old heads. I hadn't thought about the scrap metal. I might have to start saving aluminum to pour some castings.
They’re actually amazing frisbees as well
I've also used old drum head piecs for snare strainer attachment straps..
When my friend broke a drum head, she used it as a Frisbee in the band room at highschool. It was hilarious.
Ahh.. The good ole highschool band room.
When I was younger I would use them to trim weed and dry it
Snare straps, what a great idea! One item I'll never be buying again, cheers!
Love your videos man!
They make pretty ok frisbees for those days the band director gives you a free day.
Right on Man!
Recycling, the best part of the live!
I make a tone ring with mine. I have cut strips and used for snare strap when in a bind. I learned to ALWAYS save the factory logo heads in mint condition because years later someone restoring a drum to OEM mint condition will give good money for the heads ( mainly snare heads). I'm trying to find a 1980 14" Ludwig Rocker Logo ( without the lightning bolts) coated head right now in mint condition.
i made a clock with an old 8 inch head, it's Pretty good
Terrific video. Some clever ideas. A fun video. You did a superb job.
I dig the video. I waded through a decent amount of the comments, but I didn’t see a use that I learned for old drum heads. If an orchestral tambourine (like a black swamp) gets a popped head, you have to dip the popped head in water and let it sit for a bit so the glue can wear off and you can go about the rest of the rehearing process. Drum head lips tend to be low enough to not soak the wood too bad while deep enough to get the old tambourine head off. Seems these videos are geared mostly to drumset, but I thought I would share in case anybody gets into an oddly specific situation like this one.
I save my drum heads in a huge suitcase.. I use em as back up. Gives me peace of mind. Also use it for that phat snare effect.
I paint pictures on used heads! Not only there is a story behind the painting (if there even is any) but also in the drum head itself!
Nice ideas. You are really creative.
those look pretty new compared to the ones I use lol
My drum heads are all ove 10 years old xD
i hang mine on the wall, some old beaten heads make good decoration surprisingly; same goes for cymbals
These are tips I am going to do with my drum set.
Mushashi Oak snare!!!! 🔥🔥🔥
Awesome channel man!
It also seems like you'd be able to cut a few strips out of a head --especially a clear head-- that would serve well as snare straps.
I just changed mine for the first time in over 7 years (they came with my kit already used for who knows how long), and I’m using the old ones to decorate my room. The reason I didn’t change them for 7 years is I have mute pads so there was never really a need to change them.
Great video, dude!!!
I don't replace my heads till they pop or crack
edd gutierrez Amen
Same
Hey guys, I just posted a similar comment on here... I was thinking the same thing! But... I noticed that as hard as I tried to tune my drums, I developed beautiful singing notes from my toms but those stock heads still made a papery sound on impact. The stock heads came with the kit 8 to 10 years ago
edd gutierrez new sounds not much better than the old ones ...fact
honestly Ive had the same heads on the same drums for like 6 years and there is absolutely no rebound because of how dead they are so 😂I'ma change then
Dude, lovin' your vids.
They work well as plant drip pans too.
Yooo the Stick Sleeves thoo! Never thought of that! I use old Emad bass drum foam to protect my kick hoop from pedal rash but it always gets super 'squished' being just foam and all..
Mad PHAT snare. . . So gonna try that
I've made a ring for a 10 inch tom, also cut a old reso snare head and put it on the snare, mainly cause I got tired of the white coating going from snare to stick to cymbals lol (magic eraser works well on cymbals btw). There's some good ideas here. Another one also is drum head art. The singer for 10 Years does it, really good artist. He seems to use just sharpies. I've done a few before but it ain't easy lol
really helpful, thanks
Very interesting tips, great!
You can use a piece of old coated head as a kick patch, cause real Remo Falam Slams are exepensive af... It works super nice for me 👍🏻
Awesome Vid . Thank you !
I keep my old heads in my hardware case as a backup during gigs...if for whatever reason your new head splits or gets damaged, you at least have a spare you can change over and roughly tune in a few minutes
